RGV’s filmography

Sarkar Raj which is going be released on 6th June 2008 has attracted a lot of attention by the media and by the movie lovers due to RGV’s previous box office failure ‘Ramu ki AAG’.Let us look back into his works ,as i hail from Hyderabad i had the opportunity to watch his works from the very beginning of his career.

SHIVA(1989):
Ramu Gopal Verma made his debut with SHIVA.It was the time when TOLLYWOOD(Telugu Film Industry) was fully loaded with masala and entertaining films with big figures like Chiranjeevi,Balakrishna were ruling the Tollywood then comes a young talented guy with a powerful script based upon Student Politics and Rowdyism.The simple and perfect script has made SHIVA a blockbuster.RGV was recognized for his technical excellence and story telling methodology.SHIVA is seen as cult film and a trend setter in Tollywood.

Kshana Kshanam(1991):
After SHIVA RGV comes with a Comedy Thriller which has opened the eyes of Tollywood.Kshana Kshanam stars Venkatesh and Sri Devi, everyone in the Telugu Film Industry were shocked by the performance of Sri Devi,it was just marvellous nothing short of a masterpiece.Kshana Kshanam introduces ‘Paresh Rawal’ to Tollywood,Kshana Kshanam is the perfect mix of Comedy,Drama and Thrill.The way the movie moves forward from every scene is a treat to watch.

Raat (1992):
After making wonderful films like ‘SHIVA‘ and ‘Kshana Kshanam’ RGV comes with a Horror/Thriller called Raat.I don’t think many heard about this film.

Antam (1992):
Antham stars Nagarjuna and Urmila.The film was mostly know for the music given by R.D.Burmen apart from music the directional talent of RGV was yet again visible but the film did not make any impact at the Box Office.

Drohi(1992):
A film which showed a new dimension of film making. Drohi which was not a hit but this is the film which would be seen as a basement for his other film like ‘Gayam‘ ,’Satya‘ etc..,.

Gaayam (1993):
One of the best film made by RGV, a perfect Gangster film which shows his past life as a student and his love affair with a journalist and just the right mix of politics and crime.The script for ‘Gaayam‘ was written by ‘Mani Ratnam’ and inturn RGV wrote the script for Mani Ratnam’s flick ‘Donga Donga’.

After ‘GayamRGV directed the film ‘Govinda Govinda’ which was a failure at the Box Office.This was the time when RGV made some important decisions about his career.He decided to move to BOLLYWOOD .

Rangeela(1995):
As his Telugu films were not doing well at the Box-Office . RGV decided to make a direct hindi film Rangeela which stars Aamir Khan and Urmila.Something new for boollywood to cheer and entirely a different presentation.I don’t think anyone other than RGV can make a film like Rangeela.

After the success of ‘Rangeela‘ he returned to Hyderabad for making some Telugu films and he did succeed in making couple of good movies like ‘Deyyam‘ a horror film which scared the whole Andhra Pradesh and ‘Anaganaga Oka Roju’ which was a complete comedy entertainer and has shown the Telugu Film Industry that even he can make films filled with Comedy and Entertainment.

RGV returned to Bollywood to make a film with Sanjay Dutt called ‘Daud‘ (Never heard of this film?? Fans of RGV would like to forgot this one.)

Satya (1998):
A perfect masterpiece showing the true face of ‘BOMBAY‘.A gangster flick which would be seen as a classic and a must watch film for film makers as this film gives much more than what we can expect in a gangster flick.The script written by Anurag Kashyap and Saurabh Shukla is just perfect.

After Satya RGV makes some forgettable films like ‘KAUN‘,’MAST‘,’JUNGLE‘ which i would not recommend for anyone.
After 2 years RGV comes with films like ‘COMPANY‘,’BHOOT‘ which had a good response at the Box-Office.

SARKAR(2005):
A film which can me made only by RGV and no other director can make Abhishek Bachchan act the way he did.Some say that ‘SARKAR‘ is Indian Godfather which i dont accept ,i would rather call Mani Rathnam’s NAYAKAN (1987)’ as the Indian Godfather.

2007 Hat-Trick:
I guess 2007 is the worst year of RGV and he would never like to remember it. He made some really bad films like ‘Darling,Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag and Nishabd‘.

SARKAR RAJ(2008)?????

    you dont know about Daud?????

    and you won’t recommend “kaun, mast, jungle”????????????

    you must be kidding…..

  2. Aditya on June 5th, 2008 5:51 am

    Wasn’t Drohi the dubbed version of Antham?

  3. ravi on June 5th, 2008 5:57 am

    surprising you call yourself a rgv fan and hardly write anything about some of his better movies! his kaun, mast, jungle while not great movies were much better than the tripe that would be served then and they were all decent individual “you can watch once” watches. i personally enjoyed all the 3 movies.

    i actually enjoyed the much maligned daud, it had a twisted sense of humor, which went well with me :-)

    and many have heard of his movies which you call unheard like daud, raat etc.

  4. krishna on June 5th, 2008 6:13 am

    @RAVI

    “kaun, mast, jungle” are not bad films at all but when you look at the previous work of RGV one cannot believe that those films are made by RGV.

    I almost liked most his movies before he started making the second version of shiva and james and all the movies with nisha kothari. I really liked kaun,jungle, daud, anukokunda oka roju too. i remember when i was in hyd, i wanted to watch rathri (original version of raat) which my older sister saw but my parents wouldnt let me see coz i was too young. i was soo mad. of course i saw it much later on dvd and thought it was really scary! like good scary!! revathi was amazing! my fav rgv movies include
    shiva
    gaayam(i think this is the best version of godfather!) , kshana kshanam (paresh rawal is unbeatable in this one….amazing coming timing!love all his dialogues in the movie..whenever he is on the screen, he delivers these amazing one liners soo well, i would recommend all non-telugu rgv fans to watch the movie).
    raat
    Rangeela
    Satya
    Company
    i also liked movies produced by him like money(which was made into glossy love ke liye kuch bhi karega but the original had more soul. look out for renuka shahane in this one and great comeback for jayasudha), money money (sequel to money). During those days, the only telugu movies we would watch were the ones made by rgv, k.vishwanath, bapu, and dubbed movies by mani ratnam(no offence to chiru, balakrishna fans!).

    @ Krishna..

    RGV was a sensation in the 90’s and early 2000’s no doubt…to give so many different genre’s is a no eman achievement..yes he is on the downside..but i do believe that he will strike back..and strike big..but when is the question..

    How did you not know about daud man..come on…it had some of the best comedy tracks..yes it was kinda a mix of Anaganaga Okka Roju and Kshana Kshanam…

  7. Tony Mera Naam on June 5th, 2008 2:08 pm

    Has either Anaganaga Okka Roju or Kshana Kshanam been remade in Hindi?

  8. OM on June 5th, 2008 2:31 pm

    Tony…i dont think so…atleast not by RGV..but then Daud was a mix of these two

  9. wb on June 5th, 2008 2:34 pm

    om, tony - rgv’s *go* is a remake of anaganaga oka roju.

  10. OM on June 5th, 2008 2:43 pm

    accha? hmmm dont even remember when Go was released…

  11. Tushar on June 5th, 2008 4:08 pm

    I thought that was ‘Sunday’…

  12. krishna on June 5th, 2008 9:35 pm

    @Tushar

    ‘Sunday’ is a bad remake of Telugu film ‘Anukokunda Oka Roju’ not ‘Anaganaga Oka Roju’

    oh god these tamil names confuse me :)
    kaun was an excellent thriller
    didnt like mast though
    i dont know how much he remains involved in the films he produce but some of them deserve mention too
    i really didnt like sarkar, probably would have liked it if rgv didnt flash up that ” i was inspired by the godfather” line before the start. from then on i sat their loathing the film.
    i have no intention of watching sarkar raaj, would rather watch aamir a second time.

    p.s- am a rgv fan too ;)

    Krishna, when u say that Kaun ,Daud and Jungle are movies not watching ur insulting Ramu’s intelligence as film maker….

    Mostly i havent seen his movies made in tamil but his movies post Rangeela are far more better than regular Bollywood fare…

    I have been a die hard fan of Ramu and i can vouch that he just needs one gud movie to come back with a bang to his golden touch….which he surely will mostly with Sarker Raj and Contract….

    I think he is one of the finest in Bollywood….the movies that he made post Rangeela have been fine attempts at narrating different stories barring apart a few….

    Kudos to Ramu!!!!!!!!

  15. srishti on June 6th, 2008 10:05 am

    Rick,
    All the above names are in Telugu and not in Tamil(Huge difference). RGV is basically from Hyderabad.

  16. chiaro on June 6th, 2008 10:30 pm

    kshana kshanam was dubbed into hindi - i think the name of the movie was hairaan

  17. Tejas on June 8th, 2008 4:53 pm

    Kaun was a master-piece in its own sense. A 3 Character piece as it was hardly even done before.

    Raat - if Indian movies had the concept of cult classics this one would definitely be one of them. Never has been a horror movie like this, although the typical RGV characteristic of having stupid end to excellent story otherwise shows up. Much better than his more acclaimed work - Bhoot.

    Daud - slapstick comedy. Not a hit, but songs and Urmila did make a huge impact.

    Mast was RGV’s biographical film. He was crazy for Sridevi just like the film’s protagonist was of a film heroine.

    Get your facts straight buddy.
