Rock On… reviews begin

Some really good reviews pouring in the first round. PFC author Pratim-da messaged us mentioning

“ROCK ON WILL BE AS BIG AS DIL CHAHTA HAI, IF NOT BIGGER… Have never felt so uplifted after watching a Hindi film… so well made… so well acted and the last half hour is just music…

Pratim-da’s message had us counting the time left for Rock On’s release here in California. Unfortunately so far it does not seem to be scheduled to release in Southern California.

It was then Sumit Bhattacharya’s review that caught our eye. Sensitively written and providing a balanced view, it was quite nice to see, Sumit sign off saying he loves the movie and he loves it “Because I am not a know-it-all movie guru, I will not hazard a guess about whether the movie will work at the box office, but as a failed musician… I would like to thank the makers of Rock On for making such a sensitive movie with music as a metaphor for life.”

So we asked around and it was our own FenderBender who messaged us that he’s (Sumit) a part of the band “Prayag” adding that “Sumit can blow you away with his blues-inspired guitar riffs on stage, but off it, he is a modest, affable guy”.

Meanwhile dear Mr. Taran Adarsh, strongly recommends the movie. But wait, this is what he begins his review with…

Is ROCK ON!! DIL CHAHTA HAI 2, one is tempted to ask. DIL CHAHTA HAI was a trendsetter when you look back, paving way for storytellers who wanted a new story to tell.

Pause.

Hold your breath. This is the same Taran Adarsh who also wrote a review of Dil Chahta Hai upon its release. Did he take any drain-all-memory before he wrote “DIL CHAHTA HAI was a trendsetter when you look back, paving way for storytellers who wanted a new story to tell.”

Because when Dil Chahta Hai released, he had killed the movie in his review…

“* The biggest flaw of the film is that it has been treated like an English film. To be honest, it is too western for the Indian masses to digest. Moreover, in the post-interval portions, the story moves on three different tracks, which are alien to each other.

* The second drawback is the length and the pace of the film. The story has been stretched excessively in the second half and what adds to the problems is the lethargic pace of the narration.

* Besides the above-mentioned flaws, the film suffers in the scripting department. The storyline is new, but it has its limitations. It might appeal to a select few in metros; universal acceptance is ruled out.

* The story just doesn’t budge in the first half. Actually, the director has concentrated more on incidents/individual sequences to move the narration ahead. The story actually gains momentum at the interval point.

Even otherwise, there are portions where you feel that the script should’ve been coherent….

But as the script writer, he (Farhan Akhtar) should’ve known that presenting an English film in the garb of a Hindi film may not catch the fancy of an average Indian cinegoer. The film has an urban look and feel to it and only a faction of cinegoers would take to this kind of a script. “

Moral of the story: Success does change one’s opinion. Even a review.

    But Taran was honest enough!
In DCH review he wrote “It might appeal to a select few in metros”!!

Trade wise it was 100% correct prediction!!

We must review his review as a trade guide(or money spending “suggesstion” on a movie!:-) )!

What I dislike about Taran’s review is his attitude of guessing whether a film will work or not. I mean, cut the crap, how can anyone ‘predict’ about a film’s future, a reviewr’s job is to honestly gauge the movie’s merits and demerits, not to guess what will click and what will not and recommend accordingly.

Even I’m waiting for Rock On! to release in States. Like Oz, I don’t have the priviledge of catching it in theaters, but, like a chor I might watch it online. :)

Though, there are two people whose review I’m DYING to read. Mayank Shekhar and Raja Sen( I wonder Sen would review this, as Mukherjee as already done it on Rediff!)

Taran is a trade guy and not a reviewer. He tries to “review” the movie based on how much money it will earn.
Sometimes he gets mixed up and sometimes he pushes his agenda, i guess and sometimes he writes what is to be written.

Uff, main main hoon, ya main woh bhi nahi hoon..main kaun hoo?

I think,we can’t blame Taran Adarsh. As far as iam concerned,Taran is a pure trade analyst, you can’t call him a film critique.he is a pure bollywood guy who like masala hindi films.

Taran always does this.. He did it with Lagaan too.. According to him, the film was too long and basing an entire movie around a cricket movie was foolish or some such thing!!(But today its a yardstick for him as far as sporting movies are concerned) Basically, I don’t think anyone takes him seriously…

  10. anand on August 29th, 2008 5:17 pm

atleast release PAANCH on DVD? Blue ray?

  11. Chetan on September 2nd, 2008 4:53 am

A different perspective. Looks like people either loved the movie a lot, or disliked it completely.

India needs to make more movies of this kind. The youth need a new direction and Bollywood having immense following will definitely impact their thinking process. Some people might argue that it’s westernized concept would have a bad influence on the youth but strongly disagree.

This movie is about passion, living your dreams!

I hope Farhan comes up with a story related to politics as well! Because its high time people realize how politicians are using our tradition and culture to benefit themselves. How corruption is the meanest worm stopping India from further growth.

India has a lot of potential. We just don’t recognize it. We need to train ourselves need to move our lazy asses, give our 100% to what ever do, learn from our mistakes, appreciate others when they do something better than us.

FARHAN is the Indain new youth ICON. He is larger than life and if he is placed on a pedestal today I won’t be surprised. He utilized his chances, opportunities and gives himself to his work. It shows only in Rock On but all the other movies he made.

He is an INSPIRATION to all no matter youth or aged, Indian or not.

Rock On Farhan! Live your dreams or Die trying to achieve them.

Not a Bad movie , nicely done movie , credit goes to Farhan Akhtar’s, He would have put little bit of more charm in this movie but overall movie was fastantic.I will definitely suit only for urban people.Everybody in this movie have done stupendous job.Music is too good.Yes i think Politicans are just spoiling this country , good for nothing.Akhtar’s is conveying sexy message to the people of India.
