*****. Great movie! Ranbir was fantastic. Shimit Amin delivers a sleeper hit. This one is going to hit you like a Tsunami. Such a fun filled movie, will surely move you to tears in the climax. What a master stroke. Potential to be the biggest hit of the year.
Will write the rest of the review when I actually get a chance to watch the movie.

You wrote all this without even watching the movie?!

It has a sarcastic tone.

Heh. *Sheepish grin *

It must take a new level of ambient stupidity for that comment to get 13 downs.

Excerpt: Writer Jaideep Sahni and Director Shimit Amin’s Rocket Singh – Salesman of the Year fails to attain much height; and generally goes nowhere in particular. An average fare. 2.5 stars
Review: “Rocket Singh has no genre, and that is why it will work”, Shazahn Padamsee, one of the two ladies of the film had said prior to the release of the film. She probably is right about the first part; but it doesn’t look too well for the second part of her statement to come true. For the simple reason that for most part, Rocket Singh seems to go nowhere.
Indeed, the film is sprinkled by inspired performances by Gauhar Khan and Ranbir Kapoor and a close-to-reality depiction of a sales team of a big company. But the once the above two keys are established, the script itself starts waiting for something to happen! And no, with ’something’ we don’t really mean a couple of rather improbable scenarios like a hot-new-gal-on-the-designers’-block becoming pally with a sales guy in an awkwardly written scene of their the first meeting, or indeed the complete ‘corporate heist’ (not in literal terms), which gives the film its title.
The film, in one line, is about a young, idealistic salesperson who decides to give it back to the system by building his own world, while continuing to be a part of the system. In this quest of his, a few other disgruntled elements of the system give him due support.
It is definitely not mandatory for a story to have a beginning, a middle and a climax; just as it is not necessary for a story to have a volatile EQ curve – but what would you call a story which is a mere representation of “a normal day’s work”, splintered with doses of artistic license at that? Especially when the representation is neither unique nor evokes much, after the initial guffaws of approval.
But what lifts the film is Ranbir’s yet another endearing performance. He looked the part every single moment of the film. And how! But one of scene stealers is Gauhar Khan, playing the part of a front office girl. Giving them good company are Mukesh Bhatt, D. Santosh, Naveen Kaushik and Manish Choudhary as their office mates.
But that’s just about it. All the best & witty one-liners are exhausted quite early in the film – as are the ‘real scenes’ of the film. What wanders for most part are a writer’s wanderlust of a filmy solution to the everyday life. Good for fantasy – probably; but it just doesn’t work in this semi-realistic film.
Unfortunately for the film, with the storyline not allowing much visual scope and music being restricted to Salim-Suleiman trying to ‘pump up’ the proceedings with their ‘techno’ beats in the background, there are not many cinematic tools that come into play overtly.
Jaideep Sahni (the writer) has fallen short earlier too, but this is definitely the first step backwards for director Shimit Amin, after two superbly directed works in Ab Tak Chhappan and Chak De. Maybe he embarked too early on this one.
Maybe everyone embarked too early on this one. Looks like a deliciously spicy dish half cooked.
Rocket Singh – Salesman of the Year is a “not bad; nothing too great either” kind of an average fare. Take your own call.

No official reviews on any site anywhere ? whts the matter ? is thr anything suspicious ?

This is a really good movie and it was a pleasure…Very crisp, clever and yet so real…The movie impresses you, stuns you, amuses you and yet at the end touches you. Top notch stuff!

As usual trash adarsh has given 1 n half stars….rajasen and rajeev masand have given their thumbs up…and anupama chopra of ndtv gave 3*…
with the track record of the above said reviewers…am sure the movie is pretty good! Am catching it @9PM..will pst my review late night

Taran adarsh is a bloody idiot. He says the movie is dry and dull and loads of other stuff. He expected it to be a mindless comedy like Ajab ghazab n De dana dan. But mayb eit turned out to be an intelligent fare. He had criticised Chak de and Ab tak chhapan also. Anyways if he saying its bad , then it’s gotta be good. Hoping for the best frm the team of Shimit amin and Jaideep sahani.

the last time he was so severe with a eagerly awaited film was when dev.d released…that’s what gives me a lot of hope… :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:
loading...
It’s pretty decent, very subtle.I just felt that first half hour was a bit inert.Excellent performances all around specially the supporting actors.Ranbir’s acting prowess & confidence is growing with each passing film.

Fantastic film. Do not miss.
Great to see Yashraj making songless films — Kabul Express, Chak De India, Rocket Singh…

Movie is not bad, but it didn’t work for me either. I like a few portions of the movie, esp in the first half. Second half looked like a boring moral science lecture to me.

Shimit and Jaideep deliver a good movie (not great)! I am sure it is notch above the trash Bollywood produces but is overly long (imagine a movie with 2hrs 40 mins and no songs….yaaawn) and sometimes is too good to be true and sometimes preachy!
I liked the detailing gone behind each character, can’t say this for all the scenes though (like people teasing the protagonist with rockets). The performances from all the cast is superb with Ranbir Kapoor enacting Harpreet Singh to the tee! Actually we see more of Harpreet Singh the sardar than Ranbir Kapoor the actor (unlike many of the so called Bollywood heroes).
They didn’t make it melodramatic, over the top or loud…everything is subtle…even the arguments are subtle…
liked the fact that they gave hardly any footage to the love angle…
Its noble and honest…and sticks to the story the writer wanted to tell…but thats it…
loading...
I felt the sub-plot of Ranvir floating his company was inspired from ‘The Office’ season 5…US version…the way they go through sales…receptionist becoming key…and starting in garage et al…
two point which I thought are cliched…why has the protagonist needs to be a hero or zero? Here he was zero? why he should be just passed (38%) rather than say first or second class without being brilliant (say 50-70%?)?
Why he was given a place near to loo?

Great ensemble cast, wonderful acting, technically well made with a lot of realism. But it really didnt work for me. If I would put it in a phrase, I’d say it wasnt awe-inspiring as the subject of this film ought to be. I have seen close friends going through this situations and I didnt find Rocket’s struggle much of a struggle. May be I have seen/heard/studied a lot of case studies in corporate career and hence I didnt find anything great to take home. Request others to use their own judgment to watch. I have seen these things happening around for some years now and so may be I dont find it all superb to go yay! about.

Rocket Singh is a surprise packet. Certainly good but not extra ordinary. Interesting except for Ranbir and Prem Chopra all other cast is either new or unknown. I don’t know their real names but Nitin, Puri, Koena, Mishra, Ranbir’s lawyer friend, Ranbir’s girl friend were all impressive. And Prem Chopra is too good. It feels good to see this work being nearly as good as his 1st work – Ab Tak 56 which was just brilliant.

heh how could I forget Giri. He was just brilliant.

Well its nice to see Shimit Amin & Jaideep Sahni come up with something like this.Ranbir is really good as Harpreet Singh & is on a roll now.even the rest of the casting is quite good. Its not a typical run of the mill movie for sure, though not exactly something extra special.
Its between a 3 & 3.5 star rating for me.
loading...
Its a fantastic movie. One of the best to come out this year. Ranbir along and the entire supporting cast have delivered great performances. I am going with 4/5 because an effort like this needs to be appreciated. I definitely recommend this to all.

Unsatisfying!!!
THere were moments when I couldn’t believe it was a Shimit Amin-Jaideep Sahani film.
The stereotypical OTT ‘khadoods’ boss almost killed the movie.
And the ‘goodness’ was hammered continuously towards the end.
Why the phuck did it need to preach in the end :notsure: ?
The plot only occasionally surprised you with freshness. It had standard ‘incite and pay-off’ scenes which were done well but then once you go on that route you need to deliver a final pay-off too, but the final pay-off was so thanda and preachy!!
I know I’m rambling, but I’m still not ekdum confident about my problems with the film. I guess may be the tonal consistency was missing!! It was too dramatic and filmy at places, but couldn’t carry that filmy punch for long. One can easily compare it to Khosla ka ghosla. The harassed cons the person who is harassing.
I need to chew on the film a bit more.
Its definetly not a 2 star movie. It is a very respectable 3 stars, mainly because of sooper dialogues and characters. But Shimit-Jaideep??? definetly 2 stars

Shimit / Jaideep – keep them coming.
Hats off to Yashraj for producing such films also.
loading...
a movie with heart in right place….such movies come out rarely nowadays esp. from yashraj

i strongly feel jaideep sahni will emerge as the r k narayan of our generation. totally loved this one… wasn’t disappointed on any ground, only wished to see more of the dazzling shazahn on screen… rocket de phatte!
loading...
Bro..ur getting confused..in ur review u referred sahni as RK laxman..here u have mentioned RK narayan..now i am getting confused!!
loading...
Pretty much rocks! Jaideep Sahni assembles his best ensemble characters since Khosla…Ranbir is now offically the next big star in my book…Tapers out a bit towards the end though…
loading...
Loved it… yeah it was slow in places and little dragging in it’s drama in a few, but it was a lovely story, with so much of Hrishkesh Mukherjee kind of middle class life moments trapped on camera.
loading...
I too mentioned Hrishida on my very first movie review of KKG !
loading...
I understand that there is a need to appreciate honest movies in today’s world of mindless movies. And I totally agree that Rocket Singh is an honest movie.
But, the movie was not entertaining at all. Barring few moments here & there the movie appeared dull & preachy at times even sounding like a moral science lecture. As was the case with Delhi 6, this movie too was honest but dull.
2 out of 5 stars from me (and that is mostly due to the wonderful supporting cast especially Naveen Kaushik as Nitin the Sales Manager & Gauhar Khan as Koena the Receptionist).
loading...
A must watch. Maybe the ending IS a little thanda compared to the rest of the movie, but it has great actors, great dialog, VERY funny parts, and a hero we all probably wanted to become before we stepped into the real world. Jaideep Sahni and Shimit Amin, wah wah wah!
loading...
A good effort though I found it too idealistic, too good to be true & downright stupid on different occasions. Some very good performances saved the day somewhat.
loading...
Kudos to Sahni, Shmit Amin and Ranbir.
loading...
Loved the movie. The movie kept my interest throughout. The story is implausible, but is well written and nearly convinces u that it could have happened. The ragging done by the Coworkers was over the top. Liked the way the name of Rocket comes into the picture.
The background music was awesome as was the acting by the supporting cast as well. Liked the way the romance was not given much focus. Ranbir is extremely lucky with his choice of films.
loading...
Loved it.
It has its flaws, but the sincere character performances and laugh out loud moments made it a good watch !
Here’s my PFC review !

A good and decent movie to watch…thanks to Jaideep and Shimit. Rocket Singh is slow a bit but still I loved it for its beautiful effort & honest approach. All the actors have performed well and is worth watching for its lightness & simplicity…

This is my second attempt to rate this movie..coz my first comment was deleted..(i really don’t know why..may be coz i made some remarks against khaleed saab!!..no freedom of expression haan.).This is truly a wonderful film..I really enjoyed every moment of this film..i feel, Indian films are going in the right path..kudos to sahani, shimit and Yash Raj for producing this film..I hope at least here i haven’t written anything against anyone!!..

its just nice.dont raise above it…

Good cinema, though very Black and White.

Did not enjoy the movie..
When I saw the promos I kept thinking there might be some story behind being called ‘Rocket Singh’ but there was no Rocket Singh only Rocket Sales!
Although, I appreciate the movie was being true to life; but can’t life be kick-ass as it was in Khosla ka Ghosla or Chak-De? … I mean I kept thinking HP will do something REALLY kick-ass; but the director made honest people so boring! Why couldn’t HP just kept being honest into situations and take up corrupt junta’s case in a fun-way than being a loser himself? It could have been portrayed that being simple is not equal to being stupid!
I kept waiting till the end of the credits to carry something valuable back with me home! but alas! nothing came out of it except tht the editor must have fallen asleep himself while editing this boring movie (sic!)
But After reading junta’s reaction on this website.. I am thinking did I actually miss something?? Or it is becoming an excellent demonstration of an ‘emperor’s new clothes’ syndrome??

Pocket mein rocket hai… rocket mein dum hai… a good film is often a simple thought well-storified! ( my rating will be 3.5)
loading...
I was able to watch the movie without much of a fuzz…. it was a relief that i didn’t waste my money this time atleast.
loading...
Solid movie…great script.
loading...
well .. just in few words i would like to comment that where films create characters to tel a story, ther in Rocket singh a stoy has been created to help define good characters .. a film purely to be watched for its sheer presence of subject and attitude
loading...
I want to know why my last rating was deleted.
loading...
And this time, my rating was deleted, but my post was let be. What the hell?
loading...
like….Ab Tak Chhapan and Chak De India….Rocket Singh……….is coolest movie by Shimit..all without usual bollywood bullshit !!!
loading...
yes, this is clearly his best.

I want to bid goodbye to the year with some nice films. this, hoping, is one of them.

Great for YRF, but not very good as a movie. Too much of the dialogue is catch-phrases, and there’s a subtle problem with Ranbir Kapoor’s voice. Full explanation here:

some good performances ..but that’s about it. quite boring otherwise
loading...
What a delightfully fresh film. Excellently written, great performances. Few issues – another bad sense of music film, the finale could have been grand and memorable but no we need to have a jhinchaak Salim-Sulaiman song or who else will know ki YRF ne paisa lagaaya hai, when you write smart lines, introduce them a good 10-15 mins into the film, don’t start right away, warna aisa lagta hai we are watching an ad. Bus thoda over-crispiness issues chhod ke one of the best films of the year. So much more to it. Waiting to watch it again.

Bandha movie.watched the night show on new years eve after being ditched by frnds and fmly.it made me forget all that and completely hooked me.Ranbir is awesome.Everyone was gr8.Loved it.Jaideep Sahni is the massu!:)
loading...
Could have been so much better. The jokes failed to strike a chord. The characters failed to grow with the movie. Colloquially, too much funde-baazi.
loading...
Ranbir Kapoor is getting versatile with his acting.Great characters played Gauhar,Santosh and the rest.Jaideep Sahni..man this guy probably lives the lives of all the characters to write so well. How does he do it?And Shimit Amin…keeps impressing and now with his third..he just nailed it.Lovely movie.Way to go YRF.Give wings to such projects.Dharma prod also doing it..love this.

Best directed movie with best screenplay and dialogues.
