“Rozaana” song :: Amitabh touches different & higher level of singing!

Amitabh’s filmi songs can be divided in to few categories.
(1)
Mere Pass Aao Mere Doston Ek Kissa Suno ( Mr Natwar Lal)
(2)
Mere Angne mein (Lawaris)
Rang Barse (Silsila)
Holi khele Raghuvira (Baghban)
(3)
Mein yahan tu wahan (Baghban)
Neela Asman So gaya (Silsila)
(4) Chali chali phir (Baghban)
Come on Come on (Baabul)
Aao milke gayen aisa gana (Armaan)
Bhala Bura (Aks)
(5) His poetry recitals and his dialogue based contribution to the songs
Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein (Kabhi Kabhi)
Ye kahan Aa gaye hum (Silsila)
Title song (Aks)
Dev speaks (Dev)
Soliloqi (Aankhein)
Agneepath (Agneepath)
etc
And then we have his non filmi songs like
Don’t worry Be happy or Ir Beer Phatte etc
His dialogues in between the songs or his monologues are just perfect but his hindi songs have been having a kind of folk touch in his voice or his pronunciation of the words or the way he sings a word in the song. Is it Awadhi touch, due to his regular recital of Ram Charit Manas? Or Madhushala effect due to his father’s singing style of Madhushala?
If we listen both the versions of “Neela Asman so gaya” in Silsila than different rendition of almost same lyrics by Lata and Amitabh will be clear. He sings same words with different phonetics.
This folk kind of touch was bringing limitations to his singing. Like SD Burman is known for those Manjhi songs and Musafir jayega kahan type songs. Rajesh Roshanused Amitabh’s voice in different way, Shiv Hari in different way. Anu Malik could not go beyond the effect of Ir Beer Phatte. It is Adesh Srivasta who gave vast horizon to Amitabh as a singer and now Vishal Bhardwaj has taken Amitabh on a flying.
“Rozaana” song composed by Vishal Bhardwaj removes that folk touch from Amitabh’s singing and carries him to a different and higher level of singing. Here he sings in high pitch like, Lata used the high pitch in Ye Kahan Aa gaye hum in Silsila and usually she prefers high pitch. Amitabh too uses here high pitch but he leaves behind the folk touch from his singing and brings an urban touch to the song. Though age factor is very clear and effect of cough on his voice is clear in this song but even then he has sung this song in a new way and that new element enhances the impact of this song. Lyrics reminds the old song of Amitabh,” Jidhar Dekhun teri tasveer nazar aatee hai”. Combination of Gulzar and Vishal Bhardwaj had given us one non filmi album “ Boorhe paharon par” and this song “Rozana” brings back memory of that album. But Amitabh’s singing surely increases the value of this song. Its a pleasant change in Amitabh’s singing. Thanks to his desire to explore new and new dimensions in acting and singing.
Amitabh is not a trained singer and yet his songs have always been giving a pleasure to the listners and the fact that at this old age he is ready to bring new touch in his singing style is amazing and praise worthy. His songs are unique in hindi films and with “Rozaana” he enhances his reputation as a singer also. Hope picturisation of the song is equally beautiful in the film.

ya! rozana is definately a rocking number. big b’s baritone voice has worked wonders for this track. i can’t imagine anybody else singing this number except big b. 3 cheers!
nice post RK..
“Here he sings in high pitch…he leaves behind the folk touch from his singing and brings an urban touch to the song”
yeah i totally agreee about the urban touch… and its great that he is willing to make some changes a
crappy song from a crappy film! ram gopal verma has lost it completely to remake Lolita…and why has he used this blue sheen for all the promos? makes it look like a blue film!
rozana is a rockin song. a film like nishabd can only have a song like that… it’s situational, subtle and is wonderfully shot by rgv and sung by amitabh bachchan. also, rgv has again proved that he is an coneventional filmaker by opting for someone like vishal bharajwad to do the music.
Roshni:
What kind of “secret powers” suggest you, before watching a film, that its crap? All films having blue colour in some scenes are blue films?
Gr8 song by Vishal Bharadwaj and amazing work by Amitabh.
Wasnt the song from Main Azaad Hoon which is “Kitne baju kitne sar” sung by Amitabh.
It is also a well sung song from an amazing movie.
anand : I think Main Azad Hun song was sung by Sudesh Bhonsle.
Yaa its sung by Sudhesh bhonsle…Thx RK
Jitne baju uthne sar..ginle dushman dhyaan se..haarega woh har baazi jo khele hum jee jaan se…ooo oooo oooohooo…
Amazing song
The song from Main Azaad Hoon is sung by Amitabh Bachchan!
A minor correction for you:
Don
Yourkg:
thanks for correction. I never could find opportunity to watch two of AB’s films, Toofan and Ganga Jamuna Sarswati, So I though this song was a nonfilmi song.:)
Rainbow: Thanks for this correction. I never could listen those dialogues again after watching the film years ago, when it was released. Thanks
