Saas Bahu aur Sex..err… Sensex

Saas Bahu aur Sex… err… Sensex — Premiere — Yeah that’s the joke we are subjected to in the movie half a dozen times and even by the Event sponsorer, Delna Poonawala.

Caught up with Saas Bahu aur Sensex premiere yesterday @ E-square pune. It was a low key affair and I even overheard one of the guys managing things there talking on the phone that the event was hastily planned.

So it was a Monday premiere, with just Mausmeh Makhija and Sharon Prabhakar being the known (to me) actors present there. Raman Lamba (the model) hosted the premiere. I overheard, to my surprise, he was the producer of the film.

The moment I knew I was getting the passes, I was excited abt seeing Farooque sheikh. But like other known actors like Kiron Kher and Tanushree Datta, he too gave this premiere a miss and I was sorely disappointed. But then as the titles rolled in I was Wowed. The titles sequence depicting Indias progress right from 1947 till today was really nicely done. I began expecting a refreshing flick. The film started establishing characters one by one, slowly and steadily, I started waiting for the film to pick up. But it just refused to. It just went on and on in the same slow and steady manner. And then slowly the amateurish writing and the total lack of detailing in the day to day scenes started irritating me.

The best part of the enterprise was our good ol’ Samaritan Farooque Sheikh. Believe me, he is the star of the movie. The moment he comes on screen we just cant help ourselves from going splits. He has performed the Parsi stockbroker with tremendous panache and is absolutely hilarious when he is mouthing the lines in the Parsi accent. It is arguably stereotyped but was hilarious to the hilt. Kiron Kher was reliable as usual. And the scenes featuring Kiron Kher and Farooque bhai give us the best (the only good) moments of the movie. Towards the second half I just stopped caring about the movie and just waited for Farooque bhai’s scenes. My mom dozed off right from the 15th minute and the makers claimed that the movie was for Women.

I forgot to mention, when the Warner Brothers logo flashed in the beginning of the movie, the crowd (including me) was ecstatic. They clapped and hooted. Seeing WB logo for a Hindi film really gave me the goosebumps.

The other good thing (apart from WB and Farooque) I witnessed, was the trailer of SRK starring Vinay Pathak and Rituparnao Sengupta, directed by Ajay Verma. Its about a guy (vinay) who hates doing work and is a big Kaamchor. And the caption of the movie is ‘There is a little bit of him in everyone’ :) . The trailer was pretty good and it has music by Illay Raja and lyrics by Gulzar. Now that’s one helluva combo. Wat say??

I think Shona Urvashi, the director, is married to Raman Lamba (the model-producer) and Masumeh (she plays a part too in this movie) is sister of Shona. The above combo was also involved in Chupke Se.

spot on…. incidently Raman Lambas father was sitting behind me and I overheard him telling someone that his daughter-in-law has directed the film and his son has produced it… I haven’t seen Chupke se but i had heard it was decent… and i can bet it is better than this one

SRK is a Malu flick remake (dont kno the name) and is also being produced by Warner Brothers. Dilip Prabhavalkar is also in it apart from the above mentioned.

SRK plot sounds like Sreenivasan’s malayalam flick Chintavishishta Shyamala. Wow, suddenly his movies are in demand. Tell you what, this guy Sreenivasan is one of the best writer\comedians of India. He tells daily life stories in such a simplistic manner that it is second to none of the great masters.

Chupke Se was an okayish movie, not too great. It was a lifted from the Kirsten Dunst-Kirstie Ally 1999 comedy Drop Dead Gorgeous. The original movie itself was not too great either. The only thing i liked in Chupke Se was Om Puri’s act as a shayari spouting Don. Rati Agnihotri hammed, and Zulfi Syed was pure teak wood.

Somehow Chupke Se always remind me of Miss Congeniality. Yeah, the movie was nothing great.
It will be sad to see Farooque Shaikh in a wasted movie if SBAS is not that great.

Chupke Se is a very avg. rom-com. Kuchh khaas nahin. If I recall correctly, it’s supposed to be a comedy of mistaken identities.

    @ Kartik

I did see Chupke Se, on TV, pretty okayish movie, watch it and forget it. It was a copy of Drop Dead Gorgeous, starring Kirsten Dunst and Kirstie Alley, and that itself was aint much great too. The only thing i liked in Chupke Se, was Om Puri’s turn as a shayari spouting Don. Masumi was ok, Rati hammed and Zulfi Syed was solid teak wood.

    @ ratnakar…..

yaar chupke se okayish bhi nahi dimaag ko short picture hai….the dialogues were not at all funny
KK my advice dont watch it..
it had vishal bhardwaj’s worst music score..probably his only bad one……..

and about Saas Bahu and Sensex..the trailers are not appealing at all….
Farooque Sheikh is of course a delight to watch but sadly i think this film wont do justice to his talent…

Gaurang, your review has cost me 1000 bucks (4 people’s tickets). From your write up what came across was that Farooque sheikh was brilliant (which he was) and the rest was bearable. The second part was a gross understatement, it was utter and unmitigated crap, i suffered through the movie and even farooque sheikh couldn’t resuce it.
