Zid = Sachin Sarika, Dharmendra Nutan & Army background

Door Darshan was really a wonderful tool to watch old films as it used to telecast good and many a times some rare films which are not otherwise available. These days there is a flood of channels but inspite of their 24X7 service, audience have to face repetition of few films only. DD often showed us films which one can’t find even in the net based filmography of the actors and directors.
Sachin was a well known child star/actor and as Master Sachin, he had enacted the on screen childhood of Dev Saab and Dilip Saab in few films. Blue eyed pretty Sarika too was a well known child star/actress and perhaps she was seen first time in Guide.
Sachin and Sarika were launched as a young pair in the RajShri Production’s film “Geet Gata chal”. Its said that film’s bumper success launched pair of Sachin and Sarika successfully.
I distinctly remember seeing their one film titled Zid on DD. Never came across that film again but to my child mind film had appealed a lot. Children don’t care about who acted how or how shot was taken or which technical aspect of the film was wonderful. Something should attract them in collective or in a differentiated manner.
Other than Rishi Kapoor, Sachin was also an affable personality on screen. With a pretty face, decorated with a charming smile, he used to appeal a lot to kids. Kids didn’t bother whether he was short or tall. We observed that like Vindo Mehra, Sachin also used to keep atleast 3-4 buttons of his shirt open.
As a solo hero he is known mainly for his roles he did in the films like Geet Gata Chal, Balika vadhu, Aknhison ke Jharokhon se and Nadiya ke paar which can be said as biggest hit of his career.
He is still remembered for his small role in Sholay. He was seen in Trishul, singing Gapuji Gapuji Gam gam with Poonam Dhillon and he shared screen with Sanjeev Kumar in Arjun Pandit also. Later he was noticed in Satte Pe Satta also as the youngest brother in the brigade of seven brothers.
And then he was almost forgotten and it was said that he turned director and started making Marathi films. He made few hindi film also but I can recall only one (Aisi bhi kya jaldi hai) where he played a single parent of a young daughter and who is extremely possessive father. He was seen in one episode of Khazaana serial made by B R Chopra.
Often DD used to show one of his song in Chitrahaar. Song was from a Raj Shri film “Ankhiyon ke Jharokhe se” which was inspired by the book “Love Story” written by “Eric Segal”. Ranjita sings the song, Ankhiyon ke Jharokhon se maine dekha jo sanwre…. on the screen and Sachin is a silent participant in the song. He smiles and reciprocates the feelings of Ranjita through his gestures only. He does his job wonderfully in the song.
Sarika’s acting career could not match even with short spanned career of Sachin . In the early 80s Sarika was seen in in small roles in many multistarrer films including Kranti, Satte Pe Satta, Vidhata, Raj Tilak etc. Though Sachin Sarika pair was a hit pair and Zid was also conceptualised for this pair but they did not do many films together and this may be one of the reason for their downfall. Name of their pair was always more popular than their individual names.

Zid is truly a teen ager film. Years before the Farhan Akhtar’s film “Lakshya”, someone had already made Zid. Story demanded teen ager actors and either Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh or Sachin and Sarikacould have done the role.
As its very difficult to find the film so there is no harm in revealing the plot, whatever I can recall.
It is story of the son of widow of an Army Officer. Boy (Sachin) hates army because he thinks that as his dad (Dharmendra) was killed in the war with Pakistan so army job was responsible for the death of his dad.
His mother (Nutan) still lives in army cantonment and she is respected as widow of brave army officer who sacrificed his life for the sake of his nation.
Nutan wants to fulfil the dream of his dead husband, who wanted to make his son as an army officer but Sachin just abhors the mere idea of joining army.
He is a good student but then comes a new and intelligent girl student in the class. That is an interesting scene when she first time joins the school and attends the history period where teachers asks the student,” What is the impact of Indo-Pak war of 1965 on India and what happened during the war”. She asks many students and then she asks Sachin, who stands up in very serious and grim looks and replies,” Mere Papa ki maut (Death of my father)”. Teacher, obviously is taken aback and she asks Sarika, who gives intelligent and be- fitting answer to her question.
Initially Sachin does not like Sarika. Sarika is also daughter of an army officer. There are many good scenes showing school based activities and after some interesting events, Sachin and Sarika start liking and loving each other. Sarika’s father also wants an army officer son in law. Nutan and Sarika’s father pursue Sachin to join army after he finishes his schooling but he does not listen to them and when in a party, Sarika’s father declares that Sachin would join army and he would be pleased to marry his daughter with him, Sachin creates awkward situation for him and his mother by expressing his thoughts about army.
This misunderstanding creates a rift between him and Sarika. Relationships start facing tension.
Nutan too, is unable to accept Sachin’s logic and she clearly sees that he has made wrong conclusions in this early phase of his life.Nutan thinks he is brining a bad name to the reputation of his dead father. She feels insulted. Sarika’s father says clearly that he would not marry his daughter to a person who does not join army because he fears for his life.
Sarika too is unable to go along easily with Sachin and his stubborn and cynical attitude. Sachin is left alone and then events happen which bring maturity in Sachin.
He understands the reality and he now feels the desire of his mother to fulfil the wishes of his dead husband and he becomes ready to join the army.
He passes the exam and goes for training and comes back in the army uniform. Perhaps he also has to go on front and he goes and comes back.
Don’t know if see today then how would I find the film but back then it was a pleasant watch.
Through memory it seems better film than Lakshya. Hritik Roshan was too old to play such a character and Sachin looked a real teen ager and story of Zid was better than Lakshya.
Young sweet pair of Sachin and Sarika, dashing Dharmendra in the uniform, sensitive Nutan in white dress of a widow, all are still alive in the memory.
Dharmendra is shown mainly through flashback and there is a scene where he is sitting in the lawn in his uniform and Nutan brings tea for him and clouds just pass through them.That was a very nice scene.
I faintly remember Prem Nath, Rajendra Nath and AK Hangal also.
Music was also good.
Perhaps somebody can provide more information about this film which has been lost in the oblivion.

During their younger days Sachin had enjoyed bit more success than Sarika in his acting career and Sarika later married to Kamal Hasan. Now Sarika has again become active in acting and has got award for her performance in Parzania.
Sachin along with his wife was seen as winner of Nach Baliye reality TV show. But he is not active in films.
Will he also become active in films and will do significant things as Sarika is doing ?
As a young pair Sachin and Sarika had shown a great promise but somehow they could not maintain their earlier success. Hope they do better in their new innings.

wow…now thats some memory RKsaab!! hav never heard abt this film but the story sounds intersting 4 sure. never quite liked sachin too much but love that song of his…bade acche lagte hain….it so beautiful that there is nothing in the visuals. just two people sitting.
RK – Did you actually make notes as a child when watching these movies? Anyway, have you done a post on Trikaal here? It should interest a lot of people here
I think Sachin and Sarika were introduced by Hrishi da in Majhli Didi.. I remember watching the film in early 80s on DD.. and was an unforgettable experience.. infact we did named one of our class mates as “Paanchu”, on one of the characters.. and Sachin and Sarika were the cutest of the pairs when they were kids and even in the teens…
Adolescence which was the USP of Sachin till his teens, turned out to be the biggest villain in his career. Sarika took a few wrong decisions and ‘Nirvaan’ brought the Moksha to her career (also for director Jalal Agha)..
With Zid I recall another (poor) film by Pranlal Mehta who introduced Jay Mehta (Muskurahat)
>He made few hindi film also but I can recall only >one (Aisi bhi kya jaldi hai)
This was declared as the biggest flops of all times.. Srishti Behl (Ramesh Behl’s daughter) played the leading lady as his daughter.. but Sachin’s directional debute was “pee pee pee pee piya” Prem Deewane (Damp Squib!)
Recently I heard Sachin did a few good films in Marathi..
sachin also directed a movie with jackie and madhuri , prem deewane i guess . it was ok movie … thats his first hindi directorial venture.
Sarika also let her career take backseat after getting married to kamal hasan .
But both did ok with thier careers initially , thier sucess was befitting to thier talent . neither of them had the potential to emerge as big stars
Aisi bhi kyaa zaldi hai and Aajmayish (whiuch introduced produced mohan kumar’s son rohan kumar)was also directed by sachin.
Sachin made popular tv serials on star plus like Tu Tu me me
@Phoenixnu,
Thanks brother,
Film should be good. Story is good and above all the age of actors matches with the age of characters so a natural touch is there.
Sachin and Sarika also have their contribution in the hindi cinema. Sachin is so essential part of films like Geet Gata Chal, Zid, Balika Vadhu, Ankhiyon ke jharokhon se, Nadiya Ke Paar.
He has more interesting and impressive acting career than many actors made their debut in 70s and did not succeed in acting and turned their focus towards direction. If Sachin was also successful as a director also then perhaps he was mentioned more often.
What was his major characterstic- innocent look- became biggest hurdle for him as he could not do different kind of roles.
Sarika has just started again.
Both had started well. Everybody faces less success or failure in any career but these things dont take away what good they have done at any point of their career. Justified evaluation is always within the brackets. Outside the bracket everything can be declared as bogus. Art especially depends on these brackets.
@Subrat,
Mein aaj bhee notes nahin banata:)
well joking apart,
I wish I had developed this good habit of making notes. It seems to be very helpful. Mental notes are lost so easily and overlaping of new events makes this loss more vulnerable. :(
@Subrat,
Re: Trikaal,
no not yet. Thanks for reminding the film.
But dont know if people here will be interested in this complex film. But whenever will write on Shyam Benegal then will start from any of his other films like Ankur, Nishant, Bhumika, Junoon and Mandi.
@Pavan,
You mean they were introduced (first time) as Master Sachin and Baby Sarika in Manjhali Didi?
That film can have their first defined role but both had been appeared in other films before.
You actually can identify Sarika sitting near Dev Anand in Guide where he is fasting and people are sitting all around him and when Lila Chitnis comes and touches feet of Dev Anand or when Wahida Rehman comes and identifies that Swami is his lover Raju.
Thats true, that Sachin’s adolescent looks marred the possibilities of much exploration in acting field. In the time when Amitabh, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Shahsi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha etc are at their peak and oldies like Dev Anand, Raaj Kumar, Sunil Dutt etc are also enjoying box office success and Rishi Kapoor is taking care of youthful characters then its not so easy to establish oneself. Money is always limited in any field and when major part of money available, is spent in films made around these actors then one has limited options.
Mere talent is not single factor which can lead one ahead in life. Several other things also work side by side.
Rishi Kapoor got different roles also like Doosra Adami where he acted opposite much older Rakhi. Rishi Kapoor within his capacities gave variety and hence could sustain his position.
Farookh Sheikh could not do because in his territory Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri were getting meatiest roles.
Sarika did not get chance to work opposite big stars. She was part of multistarrer but never got chance to cast opposite big heros.
Survival is tough and it can be the reason she started appearing in films like Pathar ki Lakeer where she had to start exposure to great extent.
Subhash Ghai used her in Vidhata to make her wear 2 piece bikini.
More than Nirvana these small roles were responsible behind her decline. But then to sustain in costly tinsel town demands a lot else you go in oblivion. Its all about personal choices and growth at a given time. Be active and do whatever comes your way and enjoy little fame , good or bad, whatever comes subsequently. Its not easy for actors to live away from that profession because it makes habit of getting recognition. TV was not in a position there to resurrect dimely lighted careers.
Because its a career where media covers the people so their lives are under public gaze and everything looks big else not everybody associated with artitisc field is enjoying only success all through his/her active creative life.
@morph,
dont recall which film was Prem Deewane. In one film Pooja Bhatt and Vivek Mushran were there with Madhuri and Jacky Shroff. Is it that film?
Or may be I am mixing two films. In one film Jacky is old lover of Madhuri whoi is in Police. Jacky is perhaps film star or something like that. It had Shekhar Kapoor also as Greedy uncle of Pooja Bhatt. Pooja is ill. Pooja and Vivek help Jacky to get back Madhuri.
@Shailesh,
Thanks for info. did not know he himself directed this TV serial. actually never saw any episode but saw sometimes ad of that serial.
@RK
Yes thats the one ! . i dont remember fully myself but yeah madhuri was cop in that one and it had vivek mushran in it .
@Morph,
if its that film why Sachin stopped making other films? That was OK film. People are making really bad films and earning more money:)
Saw recently Madhur Bhandarkar saying on the occasion of presenting Chirag Paswan (Son of Mr Ram Vilas Paswan, Union Cabinet Minister)that there is scope of so many kind of films, and its not this that only big budgeted films are working, every kind of film is earning good money.
Dhandha achcha lagta hai.:)
okay, a year + later and i am responding to this. I really want to get a copy of this movie ‘Zid’ from 1976.
I have googled it, ebay and everything else possible. How can I get a copy of it?
Anyone???
