Sambhala Hai Maine,Bahut Apne Dil Ko- Revisiting Love Songs of the 90’s

Of late I keep going into a reflective mode often and look back in time and relive a lot of interesting memories. A few days ago I was discussing with a friend about a Tamil movie –‘Guru En Aalu’ which after lying in the cans for a while finally got released a few weeks ago. What’s interesting about the movie is that it is the Tamil remake of Yes Boss. The discussion once again made me go back in time to the 90’s and think of some of the romantic songs of the 90’s.Now the 90’s are very special to me for various reasons. The 90’s were when I was a teenager and also the time when I moved out of school and into college. Also it was the 90’s again (the later part) when I became a young adult. So the memories of this decade are very precious to me & since that was the time my heart really started fluttering, a lot of memories come alive when I listen to the numerous Bollywood love songs of the 90’s.

Taking a cue from my fellow PFC author Tushar’s write –ups ( like this one- http://passionforcinema.com/hona-hai-to-ho-hi-jayega-of-lost-songs-ii/) I am going on my journey of revisiting some of my favorite songs ( mostly romantic ) of the 90’s.If anyone is expecting me to write on the standard songs from the blockbusters like DDLJ,Aashiqui,Saajan, DTPH etc, you are thoroughly mistaken. The endeavor is to revisit those songs which have been more or less forgotten by us. Most of these songs are from movies which probably were not box office successes. And these songs are most likely not to be seen/heard anywhere these days- not even in T.V (unless the movie is being played), but back in those days of the 90’s were quite popular in their own way. Most of these songs are confined to individual memories and one has to go back to the old audio cassette/C.D or the internet to hear these songs again.

Sambhala Hai Maine- Naaraaz

By the early/mid 90’s Mahesh Bhatt had kind of become obsessed more with the number of projects than the quality of work and this resulted in him doing a series of movies which didn’t do much justice to his filmography (barring exceptions like Zakhm of course). One such movie was Naaraaz a movie which had Mithunda,Pooja Bhaat,Atul Agnihotri & Sonali Bhendre in the lead. Though I do vaguely remember the plot and some scenes from the movie, nothing else has remained etched permanently in my memory like the song Sambhala Hai Maine from the movie. Picturised on Atul Agnihotri and Sonali Bhendre, this was romance at its expressive best. I certainly was envious of Atul Agnihotri when I saw the song for the first time. Not only was he romancing the pretty Sonali, he also got to sing such a beautiful song on screen- probably his best ever song in his entire career as a hero :)
Anu Malik certainly created magic with this song.

Check out the video and relive the magic, once again.

Trivia- Tadipaar is probably the only other movie apart from Naaraaz where Mahesh Bhatt and Mithun Chakraborty have worked together.

Utra Na Dil Mein Koi- Uff!Yeh Mohabbat

The movie introduced a new hero- Abhishek Kapoor ( now popular as the director of Rock On ) and a new director- Vipin Handa (who was popular for his T.V shows on D.D) and had an upcoming heroine- Twinkle Khanna. Somehow the promos seemed to look interesting and I remember having to literally force a female friend & her sister to accompany me for the movie because no one else wanted to accompany me. I was not at all disappointed with the movie. True there wasn’t a great story to boast of but the picturesque locales of Sikkim and the songs like Utra Na Dil Mein Koi and Deewani Deewani ( music by Nikhil-Vinay )more than made up for it. While Deewani Deewani is more likely to be remembered by people now for its brilliant Sufi rendition, Utra Na Dil Mein Koi is the one which sunk into my heart and the romantic in me was floored.

For those who haven’t seen/heard the song and for those who would like to revisit it, here is the video- do have a look and fall in love once again.

Vipinji- if you ever read this let me tell you once again that it is this movie which made me fall in love with Sikkim and prompted me to make 2-3 visits. I know I have told you this before, but cannot resist the opportunity to tell this once again.

Sawali Saloni- Hum Sab Chor Hain

Now when a movie has Kamal Sadanah and Ritu Shivpuri in the romantic lead (for those who do not know them, just forget it :) ), what more does one have to say? So while the movie did not grab any eye balls on release and is of course completely forgotten (rightly so today), there is this song- Sawali Saloni which was extremely popular in those days. Picturised on the lead pair on a fort/palace (don’t remember which one though), this one again was a Kumar Sanu hit. Lyrics by Nawab Aarzoo were perfectly in sync with the music of Bappi Lahari for the song.

For all those interested in a revisit given below is the video.

Hum lakh chupaye pyar magar- Jaan Tere Naam

Now this is a movie most of us are aware of. The songs were quite popular when the movie released and used to be a major draw on ‘Chitrahaar’ on D.D. Starring Rohit Roy & Farheen in the main lead, the music was by Nadeem-Shravan who were literally ruling the roost in the 90’s. Most of the other songs are also popular like Kal college bandh ho jaayega, main tumse juda ho jaunga, yeh akka India jaanta hai etc. But when it comes to love songs nothing really surpasses Hum lakh chupaye pyar magar sung by Kumar Sanu & Asha Bhonsle.

Resham Jaise Hain Rahein- Ek Tha Dil Ek Thi Dhadkan

I vividly remember watching the promos of this movie in T.V in 1997. The movie was supposed to be the launch vehicle of Isha Koppikar and had Inder Kumar and Arbaaz Ali Khan (seen later in Mrityudaata as Amitabh Bachchan’s younger brother). The music was by Anand Raj Anand whose first movie as composer – Masoom had just released some time before this. Abhijeet was in his element while singing this and you can feel the free spirit in the mood of the song when you listen to it. The opening lines of the song are very simple, yet makes you want to hum it to yourself (I do it often).

“Resham Jaisi Hain Rahein,Kholein Hain Bahein ,Ye Vaadiyaan
Mausam Saare Hain Apne,Rangeen Sapne,Hain Maherbaan
Yoon Hi Gayenge Milke ,Hum Geet Dil Ke ,Sadiyon Yahan”

I don’t know if the movie ever got released and have not yet been successful in my search for the actual video of the song. I guess I have to depend upon my old audio cassette when I want to hear this once again.

Aake Teri Baahon Mein- Vansh

Vansh was the Hindi remake of Manirathnam’s popular Tamil movie- Agninatchathiram. This was a movie noticed mainly due to the music of Anand-Milind. Most of the songs like Main to deewani huyi, yeh bindiya yeh kangna, etc were also quite popular. But when it comes to the turn of having a pleasant romantic track which makes you forget about the visual and just sit back and relax, one can definitely slot ‘ Aake teri baahon mein’ in this category. With veterans like S.P.Balasubramaniam and Lata Mangeshkar singing to the lyrics of Sameer ( who was having a golden run at that time as he was the busiest lyrics writer in Bollywood then ), the song is a virtual treat to the ears.

Trivia- Vansh was directed by Pappu Verma more popular as an action director. And of the main cast, Sudesh Berry and Siddharth ( not to be confused with Siddharth of RDB) can be still seen occasionally while the leading ladies Ekta and Priyanka have disappeared.

Chand se parda kijiye- Aao Pyar Karen

This was a Saif Ali Khan,Shilpa Shetty,Somy Ali starrer and was one of the early films for the main star cast. Music was composed by the then relatively new composer- Adesh Shrivastav. In combination with Shyam Raj (lyrics) Adesh composed some good songs like Haathon mein aagaya jo kal, Jab do dil milte hain, etc. But there’s something remarkable about this song –
“Chand se parda kijiye” which in spite of being a party song certainly has soul and is extremely romantic at the core.

Do check out the video once again to revive the memory once again.

Trivia- Directed by Ravindra Peepat,Aao Pyar Karein was a remake of a Tamil movie, Chemabaruthi directed by R.K.Selvamani & starring Prashant & Roja.

The list is not exhaustive and these are just some of the top of the mind recall songs in this category. Given below are a few more songs which I feel belong to this category-

Bin tere sanam- Yaara Dildaara
Mann chahe sanam- Aar Ya Paar
Tu jab jab mujhko pukare- Qurbaan
Ek chanchal shokh haseena- Baaghi
Aankhon se dil mein utarke tu mere dhadkan mein hain- Fareb
Chaha to bahut na chahen tujhe- Imtihaan
Tu mile dil khile- Criminal
Sherry main ho gaya deewana- Vijeta

Feel free to add more songs which you believe fall under this category and let’s relive the 90’s once again.

All the 3 songs mentioned by you are really good & deserve to be in this category.Only one thing I would like to point out is that Dilwale was a very successful film. But considering that the song is not heard of much, it can be certainly be part of the list.

The reason I have mentioned two songs from the same film is because both were very popular at that time.In fact I think Sir like Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayi was a very good album and would have been much more popular had the film been a bigger hit.

    1) Tere Dar Par Sanam- yes certainly in the same category, but one of the more popular ones like Sambhala Hai Maine
    2) Sherry main ho gaya deewana- its from Vijeta & yes it certainly fits in.
    3) Kahin to mil jaayega- not exactly a love song, more of a fun & frolic song- Ayesha Jhulka & some females dancing to it.
    4) Tujhe na dekhoon to chain- yes certainly a good one
    5) I’m very very sorry- again not exactly a love song as much, more of a playful song sung by Sridevi to Salman.

  7. @ Anindya- yes the the songs from Sir & Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayi were quite good but while Baazigar became a hit & made the songs of Anu Malik very popular, the other 2 movies didnt do well ( Phir Teri ….) actually had a satellite T.V release & not a theatre release.

Very very enjoyable entry. One thing that I’m really curious about is: if people who could enjoy these 90s songs, feel nostalgic about them, love them, then how come,

    they hate:

    A. Kumar Shanu
    B. Nadeem-Shravan
    C. Sameer

The contention is, liking or hating anybody is very relative and hating these people are quite common. Then how come is the end product loved/adored/remembered?

It could often happen that we might like a song, and then, might not like the singer. e.g, one might not like Mukesh, yet like “main pal do pal ka shayar hoon”. Something in the music, tune, or lyrics appeals to them. Yet, for the songe, some respect or a quite acknowledgment might come for the singer. Probably you might not love him, probably you’d think the singer is tolerable ONLY in THIS song.

But come to think of the 90s and most of the songs in this era are sung by Kumar Shanu, aided by Nadeem Shravan and Sameer. And there is a clear, observed, distinct pattern/trend to hate/dislike these people.

This is more like a puzzle to me, than anything.:-)

Actually in the 90’s most of the songs were from this combo.in fact N-S would only use Kumar Sanu &to some extent Udit Narayan for their songs. So that to a large extent also is a reason for their dominance in the 90’s.

    @Sethu (18),

Aaja Meri Jaan was definitely composed by amar Utpal.. but thats post interval story.. Pancham was initially signed for the film and recorded two songs (The title track, which I am talking is not the one you’ve known.. though T-Series did released Pancham’s one too).. The title track by SPB and Anuradha IS mindblowing and simply one of the best of that era… The famous Jalpari Stamp and SPB’s rendition is OUT of the World.. It was a big big shock for Pancham when GK/TS decided to change the MD (as much as a big shock when Ramlakhan was snatched from him after signing and given to LP by Ghai)…

Take my word.. put that song on one side and all Sanu-NS stuff on other and still this one weighs much many times..

Very well observed. Kumar Sanu who ruled the early 90s and gave hits after hits is suddenly a bad singer who sings in nasal voice. He sang many great songs and some were nasal but not all. I remember that during the 90s seven out of ten songs on Superhit Muqabla used to be by him. People who love his songs are now ashamed to say they like his singing and have to put a disclaimer that they are not his fans.
Kumar Sanu could sing romantic, sad, peppy, tapoori all kinds of songs excellently. The turning point for him was 1995. The biggest hit of the year ‘Tujhe Dekha tu’ and ‘Tum Mile’ were sung by him but suddenly Udit became the new number one having sung all songs from DDLJ. In 1995 in a TV interview he said that he would step down that year for Filmfare awards so that other singers had a shot at the filmfare award. The media twisted it and said that he had stepped down from the awards for good and then Kumar Sanu did a volte face and said he decided to contest the awards. He was still nominated for Tujhe Dekha to and Tu Mile but Udit won for Doli Saja Ke Rakhna.
In the mid 90s with the advent of A R Rahman and the increasing popularity of the TV channels, music companies began to assert more influence in the selection of the singers. I remember I used to be able to tell who would sing the most number of songs or get the best song or whose song would be played more on the TV based on the music company.
Venus was promoting Abhijeet followed by Udit, HMV was promoting Udit and Tips was promoting Kumar Sanu. The movies that had music on Tips were average or flops like Soldier, jab pyar kisise hota hai or Kareeb (even though the songs were good).
His attitude and his interviews ridiculing Rahman and his foray into movies didn’t help either.

Certainly a good take on Kumar Sanu there.IMO he was certainly a good singer ( not a great singer ), who was reasonably talented & had also the support of N-S & luck on his side.I will never shy away from the fact that a lot of the songs sung by him are great to hear even now.But what I did not like about him was the attitude that he used to show even during simple interviews.Abhijeet was another singer with a major attitude problem ( probably he couldnt accept having to live in the shadow of Kumar Sanu & Udit Narayan) and maybe they are also reasons why Sanu or Abhijeet are hardly seen now.Its only Udit who is still surviving among these singers.

He was a good singer and could have been a great singer and in fact looked like he was on his way to become the next great singer after Kishore Kumar (chronologically). A lot of factors some of his own making and some like Rahman’s rise and Nadeem Shravan not being able to work because of the Gulshan Kumar case all worked against him.

I remember seeing his interviews in the early 90s and he was nice back then but I think he became angry when his crown was snatched away and his resentment showed in his later interviews. He started ridiculing everyone who was not offering him songs. He was peeved that Rahman did not offer him songs and said that Rahman is overrated. I think its easy to be nice when you are winning and he turned out to be a bad loser.

Abhijeet has had a few hits but he has got a lot of attitude problems too. Udit is much more down to earth and humble and probably this has helped him as the movie and music industry doesn’t tolerate people who show attitude.

Yes you are right Sanu probably was a bad loser.
Abhijeet had a major attitude problem evident when he went around criticizing Adnan Sami.Sanu had problems of 2-3 kinds – on one hand Udit was always a tough competition for him,Rehman’s ascent & correspondingly N-S ka descent and then new generation singers coming up in the later 90’s – Sonu Nigam & Shaan had started doing well.

And the choreography by Farah Khan was outstanding. No 100 dancers doing PT exercises in the background, just the images of Aamir, Ayesha and Pooja Bedi.

Pooja Bedi’s Marilyn Monroe act, Aamir’s natural performance, and Ayesha was such a darling, i just flipped over for her head and heels, i was wishing so much that i had a GF like her.

  44. Jatin Lalit, for me really gave some of the best romantic songs of the 90’s.

Jaadu hai tera hi Jaadu hai- Ghulam

    Loveria Hua-Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman

Ae Kaashe Ke Hum- Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa

Main Koi Aisa Geet Gaao- Yes Boss
    ..
Even in some real rubbish movies they came up with some great romantic numbers. Recall the Salman starrer Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai, totally crap movie, but had great songs
    *Madhosh Dil Ki Dhadkan
    *O Jaana
And then another rubbish movie i recall, Yeh Silsila hei pyaar Ka, the title song was pretty good too, as also another one Yeh Dil Deewana Hai.

Somehow i feel Jatin Lalit’s scores in Yash Raj and KJO movies, though succesful were not really memorable. I did like the songs from DDLJ when i heard them the first time, but now, just dont feel too enthusiastic about em, unlike the songs of JJWS, Yes

I dont agree that the song from Kabhi Na Kabhi (Anjali anjali Pushpanjali as Mil gayee Mil gayee wo manzilen) was one of Rahman’s best compositions and I had heard the original version before but I agree that he killed it. He overdid his singing but back then I had read in a interview where Rahman said he liked to record songs with no music and then keep adding music to the song. He also said he liked singers with imperfections in their voice, so his not choosing him can’t just be attributed to him not being the the right horse to put money on. Anyways he doesn’t repeat his singers much. He likes to experiment with new singers and new voices.

    Ratnakar @46
I agree that Kumar Sanu did best when he got out of that Kishore Kumar hangover but he did sing a lot of good songs before 1942 A Love Story. 1942’s success must have gone to his head. My friend once bought this cassette of Kishore Kumar and when I played it, it was actually Kumar Sanu doing cover versions and he was horrible. The cassette had Kishore Kumar on the front and the inlay card had Kumar Sanu in small letters. He always copied Kishore’s style and that is not a bad thing but he sounded bad when he tried to even sound like Kishore. I think this is when he went nasal.

I’d agree with Sputnik, especially to his/her comment # 50. A few days back, I was trying to find the youtube link of “ek ladki bheegie bhaagie si”. And I came upon a one minute video that had the original video but was synchronized with Kumar Shanu singing in the background. It was horrible to say the least.

But all of us know that the same person has sung “Tere dar par sanam chale aaye”, and so many other songs as mentioned in this ppc blog entry as well as in the comments.

I’d just like to add one more point (to ponder or to put aside). Does it matter which music director takes which singer to sing a song? R.D. preferred Kishore over Rafi and he made no bones of this fact in so many interviews. And I hope nobody would come claiming that Rafi was less of a singer than Kishore, or vice versa.

Shankaa-Jaikishen, Madan Mohan, hardly used Asha. Yet, Asha Bhosle is Asha Bhosle.

I’m not comparing Kumar Shanu with all these musical giants, but probably “Great composer didn’t choose this poor singer” is not a solid logical argument to prove or disprove any singer’s talent.

Hmm not exactly, while SJ and Madan Mohan were Lata followers, even Asha sang a considerable number of songs for em, though not as much as Lata, but quite a lot of songs she sang for SJ-MM were succesful.

Some songs i can recall off hand.
    * Paan Khaiye Saiyyan Hamaro- Teesri Kasam(SJ)
    * Jhumka Gira Re- Mera Saaya( MM, in an out and out Lata dominated track, this song still proved to be popular).
    * Shokh Nazar ki Bijliyan- Woh Kaun Thi( MM, again another Lata dominated track, where Asha still stood out).
    * Raat ke Humsafar- An Evening in Paris.
There are a lot more for sure.

Beyond the point of who used whom and how many times, it shouldn’t be the criterion to judge a singer.

    Awesome pick Sputnik! :-)

Just to revisit some of the points to judge Kumar Shanu/any singer:

    1. Being nasal doesn’t explain much about the talent or lack of it, for any singer. If you wouldn’t like to agree, then please listen to Noorjehan, Shamsad Begham, S.D. Burman (as a singer) and can you forget Mukesh?

Also, one might not like a singer, and that choice is too personal to demand any rational explanation. If one is a bad singer, one is. But to say one is a bad singer, because one is nasal, then that is a faulty argument, IMHO.

I personally do not like Himesh Reshamiyya as a singer, but there are thousands others who like him, or rather love him. But I feel he’s not a bad singer BECAUSE he is nasal. He’s a bad singer because I feel he can’t sing. And although I’ve good reasons for this contention, there are many who would argue otherwise.

    2. Considering who has attitude problems (as to success going to his head) or who has a bad character, or who is a good person, hardly measures any singer’s capability.

Sonu Nigam in a recent interview did say that he considers himself as the best and topmost singer, above everybody, in the history of Indian music. He was however generous enough to place himself below Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.

Disregarding what he thinks of himself, Sonu, unarguably is a darned talented singer.

But to argue, that Abhijeet or Kumar Sanu are not good singers because they have attitude problem, is like saying that Anuradha Paudwal can’t sing because allegedly, she was involved in killing her husband or that Aamir Khan is a bad actor because he said he doesn’t recognize award ceremonies/awards other than the national award.

As an audience of these singers, I think they deserve a more well-rounded logical evaluation, based on their singing, based on the songs they sang. IF one is considering judging them–setting aside the “I simply don’t like him/her” factor–then a more honest approach should be put into place; because liking anybody is too personal and relative a choice, while criticizing somebody based on THAT choice, BUT on DIFFERENT criteria is another ballgame.

Completely agree with you on both points. My talking about attitude problems was no way a reflection of my like/dislike. I was just responding to another comment and giving a reason for their downfall.

I think there needs to be a differentiation between playback singing and just singing. I think Sonu is a very talented singer and I like his pop songs like ‘Tu’ but I dont think he is a good playback singer. This is because he sings the same way irrespective of the actor in the same voice and his voice hardly suits anyone.

Kishore was a great playback singer in this sense as he sang with slight modulations in his voice and style to suit different actors like Rajesh, Amitabh and Rishi. Similarly Rafi used to make slight modulations in his voice and style for different actors like Dilip, Guru Dutt, Shammi Kapoor and Johnny Walker. Obviously Rafi and Kishore still did not suit some actors but singers were mostly chosen before the mid nineties based on suiting the actor. Even NS chose SPB for Salman in Saajan though they did choose Kumar Sanu for Dil Hai ke Maanta Nahin and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke for Aamir.

Hindi movies initially had actors who could sing like Saigal and Ashok Kumar. But then playback singing started because it was hard to find actors who could also sing. Playback singers were chosen based on voice match initially. But nowadays it does not matter if the singer suits the actor or not. They are so many new singers who just sing one song in a movie (its good that they are getting chances) but I would like to see them sing a whole album instead of one song.

Sethu, truly touching for you to have mentioned Uff Yeh Mohabbat, and my music. My personal favourite would be Deewani Deewani and Teri Lagan Lagi, as I share a special bond with them.

I would like to share two things about the music, the first being that, Deewani Deewani was invented, when I was at a mosque in Nizamuddin, and I heard an old devotee singing ‘Deewana Deewana, and if you hear the absolute last bit of the song, it turns into ‘Deewana Deewana’ from ‘Deewani’. Loved the effort by the Sabri brothers’, who I doubt did anything after that.
Teri Lagan Lagi is special for the mere reason, for Gulzar Sahab calling me to congratulate me for my lyrics, undoubtedly the most special moment. Sethu, do hear ‘Jab Se Hai Seekha’, I’m sure you’ll like it more than Utra Na.

    @Aditya Pant # 63

Thanks for the numbers, though it’s hard to believe. I mean, really? Then how come when we hear Madanmohan songs, we hear more of Lata and less of Asha? I’m referring to things we hear at random, like music playing the FM, and people discussing Madanmohan songs. And though the statistics of 210 songs of Lata and 192 songs of Asha by Madanmohan are weakly related to the aformentioned trend when certain music directors
preferred certain singers, these are interesting numbers… the ones you produced here.:-)

    @ Sharath, on 66

Please read what I said about being nasal and being a singer in comment #56
before jumping on to conclusions. I did mention some other singers
in the same line, but you chose to pick only Mukesh? May I know why?
What about Noorjehan, Shamsab Begham, S.D. Burman himself…..and not to forget Lata Mangeshkar
as she sang in Mahal? (”aayega aanewala”). These people were all nasal and immensely talented as singers
as well as musicians. Lata used to say that she would try to sing like Shamsab Begham and Noorjehan in her
earlier years, and those attempts were quite visible in her initial singing career.

To come to your point, many might not like Mukesh, but not many would say that Mukesh couldn’t sing.

I love Rafi, but believe it or not, I have seen people who do not like Rafi, on the pretext
that he had a strong “punju” accent.

My point is either you like someone or you don’t, and there could be very good personal reasongs for these
likings or dislikings, but using whether someone is nasal hardly solidifies an argument.

And this is not a forum for showing whether someone likes Shanu or not but my first question was:

how come, if you dislike/hate most of the people associated with most of the songs made in the 90s, then
how come do you like the songs? And this was a question purely out of academic interest than to see who likes Shanu and why.
If you don’t like Shanu, fair enough. But to say I do not like Shanu becuase he was a bad singer AS he was nasal, or
that he had attitude problems shows more bias than logic and when we try to justify our reasons with bias, but try to make it sound like logic,
then it gets quite problematic–it falls on its face.

Since this is a blog where rational, responsible and adult people write, I think we should be more careful of what passes out, than argue in a juvenile fashion. That’s all I’m trying to say! :-(

“I don’t consider Kumar Sanu to be a great singer at all..He was lucky and at the right time..Abhijeet,Udit,Hariharan,Suresh Wadekar were better singers than him but because NS and Annu Malik preffered Sanu(or producers prefered),he could make it big..”
Every singer needs luck and some music director/producer to back them. Once they become the No 1 singer everybody flocks to them. Even Rafi became big because he was there at the right time and Naushad backed him. Kishore became big in the 70s because of RD backing him. But there are a lot of singers who were backed but did’nt become great like Shailender who initially was the voice of Rishi. Abhijeet, Hariharan and Suresh Wadkar are not better singers than Kumar Sanu. Kumar Sanu could sing romantic, sad, happy, tapoori all kinds of songs equally well. How many good sad songs did Abhijeet sing? Can Hariharan and Suresh Wadkar sing tapoori numbers ?
Here is a nice video of Kumar Sanu and Udit singing ‘Khaike Paan Banaras wala’ song on star waar parivar.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvdiT-zrNro&feature=related
Sanu totally singers with heart and emotion and overshadows Udit. Udit did not sing with any variations in the early 90s. He started working with Rahman and he started singing with variations. Listen to Kya kare kya na karen. Udit never sang like that before. Kumar Sanu on the other hand was brilliant in Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen. He sings the song with so much passion and intensity and suits SRK perfectly.

For the masters they were, even I hated the LP past mid 80s. Over orchestration was a big let down. 50 violins, 100 tablas etc seem to behind every song. Jeetendra and Dharmendra dancing in white pants and sleeveless t-shirts made it all the more unbearable.

QSQT came a breath of fresh air in the late 80s, followed by “Maine Pyaar Kiya”.

NS, Anu Malik were better than LP in the 90s but when the entire career is concerned, NS and AM wont fall in the class of LP. Even Jatin-Lalit came up with some fresh tunes in the 90s.

But nobody reinvented music the way AR Rahman did. Roja in 1992 was a genuine path breaking album with hitherto unheard sound. 17 years down the line and the man can still rock with Masakalli and Arziyaan. He is bound to go down as the best in his era.

“Roop Suhana Lagta Hai” from “Gentleman” should be added to this list. I remember that song as the one which was able to dethrone “Didi tera Dewar” after some 30-40 odd weeks on top of the charts.

Yes in addition to N-S & Anu Malik & Jatin-Lalit who were ruling the charts, there were people like ARR who ushered in a new era in Bollywood music and also melody makers like M.M.Kreem.Both the songs mentioned by you were great compositions of Kreem.Anand-Milind faded out by mid/late 90’s and even people like Dilip Sen-Sameer Sen, Nikhil-Vinay etc haven’t managed to survive.Adesh Shrivastav & Anand Raj Anand are just managing to survive and hold on.whereas ARR has just gone on to consolidate & do well.So he’s a lambi race ka ghoda.Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy started off in the late 90’s and are again a good force in the trade.

Anand-Milind’s (AM) career was notoriously related to Ilayaraaja’s(IR) career in tamil. AM used to rip off IR’s songs and made a career out of it. Anari, Vansh, Dil to name a few. When Rahman entered the scene and IR wasnt having the hits anymore AM couldnt find another source to survive. They couldnt copy ARR’s songs as most of his tamil movies were eventually dubbed in hindi and hence their career couldnt sustain. Sad state of affairs for the kids of talented composer like Chitragupta.

Dilip Sen-Sameer Sen did give some good music ini “yeh Dillagi” and “Aaina” but most of the credit went to Yash Raj banner rather than the Mamu-Bhatija pair.

Anybody here remembers the movie called “Angaar” starring Jackie Shroff, Nana Patekar and Kader Khan. It had a nice theme music which was played on the flute.

Inspite of the mostly mediocre music, I still remember the 90s very fondly. But one cannot forgive Gulshan Kumar for torturing us “With Jhankar Beats”.

There were AM albums which were more than one per album. Vansh, Anari to name a few. Also the biggest hits on most of their albums were IR inspired songs. It is kind of sad that Hindi movies didnot experience the brilliance of the genius called Ilayaraaja.

“Aasman Pe Baiti Chandni” from the movie “Khatarnak”.

90s which is the age of mediocrity, there were many a gems which were composed. Some became famous but many were lost.

“Bhairavi” by LP was one such gem of an album. One of their all time best. The movie starring Ashwini Bhave was a dud and thus not many people got to listen to the songs.

So in that case are we talking about romantic music or romance in the 1990s?
If we are talking about music scene then it goes this way..we cannot simply divide music scene into decades.Romantic music on 31.12.1999 was the same in 01.01.2000 and well into 2001/2002(post 2000)…it never progressed but had a natural death. And also as they say in a cliched way “Love is timeless”.. 90s or 2000s..its the same. The guys who broke the 90s stereotype in the 90s itself were A. R Rahman and Viju Shah ( yes..he did use a lot of instruments and synth which were new at that time) who also got inspired by Exorcist-Tubular Bells for Gupt soundtrack.
