Scare me…. please.

I have always been a huge fan of horror flicks. I still remember as child I used to watch the zee horror show.The first few episodes were quite good, infact I remember a episode called “saaya” in which the ghost of rapist named vikranta was shown……i was so scared that vikranta haunted me for almost a week then. Later on, that show became more of a comedy show with zombies walking (but still will chase down anyone running),amavasya where actually moon was shown, dog barking rather crying in a very familiar voice…….In my growing up days I got my hands on everything which seemed remotely horror. The Ramsay brothers churned out many number of zee-horror kind of movies. be it purana mandir, purani haveli, darwaza, veerana, sannata, dahshat and many more…..i never liked these movies because they were not able to scare me barring a few scenes…also I was then exposed to horror flicks from other side of the world with the likes the Exorcist.and the entity (which don’t scare me these days)…….Rajkumar Kohli made Bees saal baad with Dimple kapadia and Mithun..the only scene that I remember till date is Dimple extending her hand for about a km….there are a few old movies…. even from black and white era, but they never scared me. May be just because they don’t stand tall against today’s standard…..Also it would be great if someone could share some old horror flicks.

Written and directed by Ram Gopal Varma, Raat was a welcome change.The atmosphere build up was nicely done and the performance from Revathi was A rate. After many years RGV remade Raat into Bhoot, which was cliched but still had it’s moments and was scary at the end of the day.Bhoot was totally driven by sound and camera and RGV had very effectively used insignificant objects to scare the audience like the door bell or lighting the gas burner or the mirror .Urmila was a perfect fit in the role of possessed women.Btw where is Urmila these days, I always thought her as a decent actor and far better then some of the other female actors. coming back to the point,RGV further extended his obsession with horror genre by producing Darna mana hai ….which was pathetic to say the least…..the main backdrop story was not developed properly and barring the nana-vivek story none of the story was interesting forget about being scary. A sequel to DMH was also made called as Darna zarrori hai…recently this has been covered on PFC….DZH was dull and far from being scary.after watching DZH ,it seemed that all the writers had written the climax first and then wrote the remaining story to negate the climax for the sake of unpredictability.how can I forget Vastu shastra …..All the ingredients were there but the movie couldn’t scare you…this was the worst horror flick to come out of RGV factory.

Some other directors also tried this Genre.Vikram Bhatt made Raaz which was a poor copy of what lies beneath It was loud,predictable,over the top….the only best part of Raaz was it’s songs …i have recently heard that Raaz -2 has been planned…… Guddu Dhanoa made hawa which had Tabbu at her worst …Hawa was a total rip-off of the entity and failed miserably to scare…Then there was Krishna cottage ..i don’t know who made it and there is nothing to mention about it …….Now and then we do come up with some third grade horror flicks but none of them is near the mark.

We don’t have that many good horror flicks. Here is genre, which bollywood has never quite utilized in the best manner and still has plenty of scope to be explored…..Drop in with your favorite horror flicks …..mainly from India ….

    @Anand K,
    I recently saw “Gauri-The Unborn” thats ultimate amalgam between horror and social welfare ministry and Health Ministry and future based Minsitry for women welfare:d.
    Whichever organisation be it health , social or religious opposes Abortion will whole heartedly support and promote the film. :)
    Ramsey, RGV are children before Gauri’s concept.
    Its modern and goes back to the time when Abhimanyu was learning art of archery while living in womb of his mother.

    You seem to be interested in spoiling completely life of urmila Martondkar and RGV
    ;)

    “After many years RGV remade Raat into Bhoot, which was cliched but still had it

  7. RK on March 6th, 2008 8:52 am

    @Anand (3),
    I did not say Gauri is bad. Atul Kulkarni, Anupam Kher might have worked in it seeing its social message. Its director’s first film. Given subjects new touch it wont bring boredom in first (and only) watching. I would not be schoked if I get to know that this is also copy of some hollywood horror flick.

    Madhuri, Karisma, Raveena all have married and mothers by now and they have either made their come back or are planning, so given these conditions Urmila can be busy in searching settlement in personal life. How long one can look for illusionary filmi career;)
    But as once an actor always an actor so even if she marries she will be coming in films again and again.
    History suggests those who married remained in benefits:)

    what can be said about RGV. Media and his fans make his every film as his come back film.
    was Sarkar a big hit and great? so that Sarkar Raj-a film falling in same category can uplift his image and bring him back in list of great directors?
    I dont know, would be knowing after seeing SR.:)

  8. Honhaar Goonda on March 6th, 2008 8:55 am

    i am telling you someone should make a film on “On Sunday You Should Not Cut Nails”.

    Apparently, RGV will be making a horror film (presumably after ‘Contract’) - ‘Phoonk’

    oh and, Manish Gupta (writer of D, Sarkar, directed a short in DZH), is making a movie on a Mumbai serial killer

  9. Abhinav on March 6th, 2008 9:09 am

    @Anand Kadam(5)
    I prefer Saurabh Narang’s Vaastu Shastra to Bhoot.The horror moments were equally bad in the former,but it had an obvious Kubrick influence(The Shining).The performances were dot-on,and overall the film was worth a watch

  10. Anand Kadam on March 6th, 2008 9:10 am

    HG ..looking forward to phoonk…..and also to the mumbai serail killer flick ….anywasy any film with kay kay menon should be worth a wait ….
    btw serial killing won’t fall under horror ..

  11. ANINDYA on March 6th, 2008 9:11 am

    Hey guys since you are diccussing about Hindi horror films,did anyone see Mahesh Bhatt’s Junoon?I was a rip off from a hollywood movie(Manimal,I guess).A more tighter scipt,better actors would have made it a good watch.Among the recent horror films,I liked Kaal.

  12. Anand Kadam on March 6th, 2008 9:35 am

    RK,
    Sarkaar was the last good movie by ramu ..so having some hopes form sarkaar-raj…lets see …

  13. Anand Kadam on March 6th, 2008 9:37 am

    ANINDYA …ya i remeber Junoon …It had rahul roy who would turn into a tiger at night :)…..and kaal was only style no substance …

  14. Anand Kadam on March 6th, 2008 9:38 am

    HG …why dont you make a short on

  15. Pavan Jha on March 6th, 2008 11:50 am

    Bees Saal Baad (older one) was the one I couldn’t sleep for a few days after watching.. ofc I was 8 yr old kid then and the Panja of (Spoilers ahead)Manmohan K was the only thing that I could dreamt of, for so many days… ..

    Raat was definitely very good specially considering the technology available in those days, and it was a refreshing change in the cinema of those times.. Revathy’s performance was just too good..

    When it comes to compete with the worsts.. how about Hum Kaun Hain?

  16. dabba on March 6th, 2008 7:14 pm

    @ RK -
    Can you give me any details/link for Gauri. also maybe a synopsis. from what u described, it sounds similar to the horror movie “idea” I had written and was trying to get produced. curious to see if they used the same angle as me.

  17. Shailesh Limbachiya. on March 6th, 2008 9:08 pm

    Spilers Ahead:
    Gauri-the unborn is story of happily living family -an architect,his wife and daughter shivani. when they go to their old home for vaction; the family is tortured by bhoot Gauri. Gauri was unborn child who was killed in abortion by the couple because at that time they were not ready to handle the child.
    Film is more like anti abortion and in some parts horror but it don’t scare you.

  18. dabba on March 6th, 2008 10:30 pm

    Thanks shailesh.

    That sounds so lame. I can go back to returning the chip to my handsome shoulder.

    My movie is awesome.

  19. gaurang on March 7th, 2008 12:12 am

    Darna Mana Hai had some great stories. They were not that scary but quite spooky. The saif boman is my fav. Nana-vivek one was the crowd pleaser. The raguveer yadav one was good too. Antara sohail was ok. Aftab one was also a decent one for the concept.

  20. Anand Kadam on March 7th, 2008 1:40 am

    Pavan Jha ,

    Hum Kaun Hain? …is the one with big B and dimple na ??

  21. Anand Kadam on March 7th, 2008 1:44 am

    Gaurang ..
    DMH had some ok stories …but none of them was scary …

  22. RK on March 7th, 2008 2:34 am

    @Dabba (16),
    Gauri- The unborn
    [ http://imdb.com/title/tt0982875/ ]

    Story does not travel on high level so dont think some of your story has been lifted. ;)
    Its very ordinary story. Though doubt is still there that its inspired from some hollywood horror film. There may be twisted inspiration though.

    Synposis : Atul and his wife live happily with their only daughter Shivani. Atul always busy in expanding hus business. Shivani is taking part in a race and suddenly an invisible hand pushes her and she falls down.
    Her behaviour is changed fater this incidence. Her voice is changed at times. Atul’s wife insist to have a vacation abroad while Shivani insist that no they would go to their ancesteral house and parents have to surrender before her stubborn demand. They reach there and Shivani starts behaving more awkwardly there.
    After sometime Parents are told by the ghost living inside the body of Shivani that she is ghost of their first daughter who was aborted in 3 months pregnancy. even her name was thought as Gauri.
    Gauri threatens her parents that she had to suffer for 3 days inside womb of her mother that she might die anytime and now she will make 3 days of her parents as hell and after 3 days she will take away their darling daughter Shivani with her so that they realise what pain one feels.

    Dialogues with full dose of morality are given to ghost and Anupam Kher to make Atul and his wife realise that abortion was a very big and bad mistake which they did. and they did sin so now they have to suffer.
    Is it your plot?

  23. Shailesh Limbachiya. on March 7th, 2008 4:06 am

    RK, in Gauri…why shivani was pushed by Gauri on particular day of Race. why it did not appear before? like at the birth of shivani or something earlier..?
    though the film was average i liked its special effects like… camerea travels from bedroom at night to roof of the house and soon it is converted to day.

  24. RK on March 7th, 2008 4:13 am

    @Shailesh,
    In my opinion that pushing of Shivani etc in city is weak start of a horror story. Her parents should have brought her in their old house. Like they had a buyer and they wanted to spend few days there before selling it and only after reaching there events start happening.
    If Gauri’s ghost could have come to city why she did wait for so many years?
    So film suggest that like Shivani Gauri’s ghost was growing up;)
    Then it was more convincing start. Considering Ghosts dont leave their local area;).
    Story is very weak. Moreover perhaps intention was never to make a horror film but a film which may send fear to people standing in the thinkless cue of having abortion.

  25. Avi on March 7th, 2008 6:53 am

    @Anand …

    The character was played by Surendra Pal ..
    and his name was Vikranta Zabbar …
    I was also very scared at that time …
    I was hardly 11 years old then …
    I can still remember the scene when Vikranta rips the Inspector’s Throat and held his Head by his hairs …
    That sight gave me goosebumps ..

    BTW , I think Bhoot And Vaastushastra , both were good …

  26. dabba on March 7th, 2008 7:00 am

    @ RK -
    thanks for the synopsis. nowhere close to mine. the title was frighteningly close and on the surface the concept seemed similar. I was hawking this movie for a long time last year, trying to find producers. I thought maybe one of them declined to give me money and prodcued a z-grade version of it.

    but fortunately that is not the case. Parallel development.

  27. Anand Kadam on March 7th, 2008 7:21 am

    @ Avi ,

    Thanks for the info …….i guess that episode was 2nd or 3rd episode of the show ….Bhoot was good can’t say the same abt vastushastra ….

  28. RK on March 7th, 2008 7:40 am

    @Dabba ji,
    Now Gauri films existence makes your case more strong. Whatever is the fate of this Gauri film you can pursue your case on this basis.
    Good luck. Hope now you get a producer to finance your project:)

  29. dabba on March 7th, 2008 9:21 am

    @ RK -
    Thanks. That was exactly what I was thinking too.
