Scattered Thoughts
Year 2008 is going to be special. Or it is already special. World is changing. India is changing. So is Indian Film Industry. Is Indian Film audience also changing? Every year is like that. But there is something about year 2008. One day people would say, “Before 2008 falaana falaana used to happen in Bollywood, but after 2008 all changed….”
This year there have not been that many hit hit films yet, though. ‘Singh is Kinng’ is the most successful movie of the year, apparently. Some would deny that because it is an Akshay Kumar movie or some distributors who incurred loss.
I have not seen the film yet even though I was looking forward to it. I don’t have a strong stamina. I do not know how people are able to sit through a crap film and laugh at it, for three hours!!
Then there were a few movies by X Generation directors. Some fared well and some did not. They haven’t made it big yet. Like previous years.. but they are slowly slowly getting rid of old directors / old producers.
Speaking of old directors.. Shyam Benegal made a commercial film at age of 75. Some hardcore fan of him or art films thought Shyam satthiya gaya hai. I had questioned that earlier but am not fan of him or art films. But ‘Welcome to SajanPur’ is my favorite film of the year. If he had made such attempts before then more people would have watched his films and they would have been entertained and educated. I hope the film wasn’t a tool to fund his future art films. Getting your message through commercial is also an art.
Yash Raj films flopped, this year. They need a new formulae. Have they got it? “Rab Ne Bada Di Jodi”? Nah. It is sill srk2+love+punjab. “Roadside Romeo”? They have got Kuttas and Kuttias here. Weren’t real life kutta and kuttias enough for them?
Have you checked out the soundtrack of Roadside Romeo yet? Jaideep Sahni has given the lyrics. He has a license to write crazy stuff. But Roadside Romeo is something next. Fair enough it is for an animation film. Lyrics are ridiculous but it seems they have taken it as poetry. You know it would be depressing if people danced to this tune in the clubs. And there will be so many crude jokes about this film and soundtrack.
I just don’t get why Jaideep Sahni is wasting writing such stuff. Is that his fee for getting Chak De India! getting made? He didn’t do a good job, though. He should have heard the lyrics of Hanuman and Return of Hanuman before writing lyrics of Roadside Romeo.
Anyway, if those two films work, then there will be more shite like that. If they don’t then they will re-think their filmi model.
It has been a lyrical year so far. There have been some whacky lyrics. It all started with ‘Dil Dance Maare’ from Tashan. That song wasn’t meant to be taken seriously. It was a fun song.
Then we had Pritam admitting he is a ‘Paapi’ in the song ‘Aai Paapi’. But everyone missed it. No body cares he is a ‘Paapi’. Cos people are more interested in finding out if T-Series has insured the nose of Himesh. Apparently. Allegedly.
I love this song “Tujeh Aksar Beach Ghooma-ooo”. I want to sing that track to some girl. I would not mind Katrina Kaif. Or the way Neha Dhupia looks these days. But, I would not like to sing this song to them: ” Tera mera vya soni cheti je karaiye
Agale basanta menu santa banta chahiye
Hukum jo bhi tera hoga aassi ta bedaar ho”. I want to know how Sonu Nigam didn’t not laugh when he sung those lines so seriously?!!
The lyrics should have been:
Ve Preetlo Ve Preetlo
Tusi Ka Dimplo Kade Gaya
Wrinkle Ke Peeche..
Wrinkle Ke Peeche..
There is no difference between lyrics of Roadside Romeo, Heroes, Kismet Konnection, Golmaal Returns, Singh is Kinng and so on… kya zamana aagaya hai.
We need some new talents. Some new talent need to burst into the scene and say, “Kutte Kamino, Mein Aagaya Hoon, Tum Saab Ka Pack Up karne Ke liye..” Koi Hai? Mard Ka Baccha?
Am I the new talent? All I have got to say:
“Apun se jholjhal
Faaltu ka lafda
I not liking
Phokat ka jhagda
Fir bhi uski waat lagegi
I am tolding khullam khulla
Aye suna ki nahi”

WTS was a torture the day i saw it, it still remains that way….i for one hope that shyam babu do use the funds generated from this one to again make the kind of films he is good at…
btw no mention of jaane tu… and rock on…?
geetkaron main ab koi kalakar nahien bacha hai

.
isme kuch burai bhi nahien hai

bazar se sab ka fayada hota hai
.
bas ek baat hai ki kahien ek diya jalta rahe
jisse jab bazar ka bawandar khatam ho
to andhera na ho jaaye

prasun joshi ki badi charcha hai
per woh bhi theek thak dunkan dar hi hai hain

ye ek bade ka projection hai
jiske hisab se maan ko sab pata hona chahiye
tzp main ek yahi cheej gadti hai
ye gaana blackmail karne jaisa lagata hai
.
aajkal to diya sayeed kadari ke roop main
bhatt camp ke paas hai
From the new generation lyricists, some good names that come to my mind are: Sayeed Quadri, Prasoon Joshi, Swanand Kirkire( I might have goofed up their spelling!), but yea, they don’t do as much work to be noticed in a substantial manner..!!
Rick, i think TPTM was a dud, a big time flop at BO. And while Bachna… was a hit, it was no DDLJ or Veer Zara. Am hoping Rab Ne Bana Di would be interesting, not another Mohabattein please.
If i were to list my favorite movies this year it would be
Jodha Akbar
Mithya
Aamir
Mumbai Meri Jaan
A Wednesday
Hulla
Rock On
Have not yet seen Tahan, but heard it was really good.
@Hoonhaar: It’s not ‘Aksar beach’, it’s ‘Aksa Beach’- that’s the name of a beach.
BTW, pretty ’scattered thoughts’ indeed… very apt title!
:D
yeah mate……gotta give it to you for the apt title at least
And whats with ‘Nathuni Utaro’.. sounds like ‘Beedi Jalai-le’.
So, what else we have apart from Kutta-Kuttiya in ‘Roadside Romeo’? Who is that third voice (villain?), sounds like Javed Jaffery???
@ Oxy : Yep it is Javed Jaffrey.
An interesting movie beign released this weekend is Shoot on Sight, directed by Jagmohan Mundhra and produced by Arun Govil. Yep the same Arun Govil, who became famous as Lord Ram.
Naseer plays a Scotland Yard Cop, Tariq Ali, married to an English woman played by Greta Scachi. Asked to track down the suspects in the July 7 bombings, he finds himself being distrusted by his superiors because of his religion, as well as dealing with the death of an innocent Muslim boy in a shootout.
Om Puri plays a rabble rousing Imam.
I guess after A Wednesday, we are in for another power packed performance from Naseer.
And that begs the question, what has happened to Om Puri?
While Naseer has played some excellent roles in 3 Deewarein, Iqbal, Hey Ram and recently A Wednesday, Om Puri is reduced to meaningless roles in crap movies.
I recently saw Babul on TV, and was shocked to see Om Puri hamming away to glory. Is this the same actor whom i once admired in Ardh Satya, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Tamas and Drohkaal i wondered.
Ratnakar, Shoot On Sight is supposed to be pretty sad- the reviews are poor and even Naseer isn’t promoting it. Wasn’t expecting great shakes from Mundhra anyways, though. The film tagline is unintentionally hilarious: Is it a crime to be Muslim? Uff, Rama, Rama- Kya hai Melodrrrrama?
@Jahan:
Hmm the movie has a very low rating of 25% on Rotten Tomatoes. But still would have a look, the subject does seem interesting. Also one of the reviews states that while the movie is loud and melodramatic, the characterization is pretty good.
Hey you guys…for whatever roadside romeo may seem like it is really very commendable that yashraj is coming with the first 3D film of India.
Roadside Romeo is should not be just viewed as just an “animation” film like hanuman returns as that was 2d and 3D is no joke. They have got advanced CGI techniques like fur dynamics and the renderings are not bad at all for a start. Atleast from a technical point of view it the most exciting film for me as it could potentially raise the bar for CG in Indian cinema
True Kunal… I just wish it was someone better than Jugal hansraj making this- the technique seems pretty good, but the film doesn’t. Anyway, I’m not gonna pass any judgement on it before watching it- who knows, it might pleasantly surprise us!
Looking fwd to Devashish Makhija’s animated film for Yashraj too- it’s currently in development stages…
