School of ROCK

I never thought I would include this film in my all time favs. And that also is the reason why I never bothered to watch it. But last week I saw the trailer of this film in the DVD of another film. If you have read my last post, these days I’m watching Light Films only. So I got this film from the library & started watching it. I had a blast. You know the movie worked its magic if you are laughing out loudly with nobody around you. That I think should be the test for comedies.
Last film I laughed so much was Superbad. And just like Superbad, when i was at the last part of the film I realised that i’m so much fun, I was having this conversation with myself.

Me- wow i’m really enjoying this film.
Mainak - Yes you are
Me - So does that mean Its one of my fav comedies ever?

Then I think of some of my fav comedies like Office Space, Superbad for comparisons.

Mainak - Yes it can be one of your fav comedies….

10 minutes later -

Me - Man this movie rocks, I wish I had a Rock n Roll Teacher. I think I might go as far as calling it “One of my fav films ever”.
Mainak - hmmmm
Me - Its not some high art for sure. Nowhere near some great films thats in my top 10, but this film has touched my heart.
Mainak- I think you are right.

And since then SCHOOL OF ROCK has become “One of my fav films….ever”.
And if you love Hard Rock music of the 70s, man this movie is “Redonkulous”. It took me back to my college days when Led Zep was all I was listening to. It made me wish I had a teacher like Jack Black in school. It brought tears & goosebumps at the same time when the band finally plays their song in the climax. And I’m a guy who hardly ever gets tears in my eyes while watching a film. I watched that song 10 times since last night.
I’m going to post the Music Video of that song. The actual song in the film should be seen only after knowing all the kids in the film.

And the kids are so amazing. My fav was the Japanese kid who is a Classical Piano Player - Robert Tsai. His Solo in the finale is priceless. Joan Cusack is as usual - amazing. The amazing acting among kids has to be by Joey Gaydos Jr. He plays a very stiff & shy guitar player who is chosen to play the lead. He was perfect. I thought maybe thats how he is in real life since all the kids were musicians 1st & not actors. But when I saw the special features it turned out that he is a total rockstar. I’m guessing most people have seen this film by now. If yes I would love to know which kid was your fav & which scene/shot was your fav in the film?
Mine was when in the climax song, Robert Tsai gives his hand to the crown while doing the keyboard solo.

But this film belongs to Jack Black. He runs over everything in this film. I think every kid should be shown this film. I really like him. He was great in Margot at the Wedding last year. This film was conceived by his writing partner Mike White(Black’s Neighbor & Friend at that time) just for Jack Black.

In the special Features of the DVD was this video of Jack Black begging Led Zeppelin to let them use “IMMIGRANT SONG“. Its hilarious. Check it out.

ROCK ON!

Funny how you never spoke of Linklater, which is actually good in a sense. the slackers would know and nod.
recently I was reading recently about this ‘welcome worn out/we are so over..’ shit which no prizes for guessing featured Mr. Black, along with other usual suspects.

I know people love accusing stereotypes of being monotonous, which might be a literal crime, but I don’t think the stereotypes give a shit about it.
School of Rock is drunk home alone fun. not a trip film, but has its escape convict fun, its dead poet’s society on a perk moments, and the cult elements - a non-fan ridiculously takes on rock n roll, screws pop, screws the kids, obviously they don’t look like they wanna figure it out, the whole school shit - parents, insecurity, growing up, studies, exams, free periods, that hot teacher, n all that.

I only remember the first lecture, and how Jack reacts to britney spears and boyband talks. that was the rewind moment. and Joan Cusack.

I saw superbad last night as a sleeping pill film and well…woke up late and it fucked my day. paisa wasool.

    parting thoughts…
I am sure your fans are gonna wonder why you wrote an article on school of rock while there are better candidates to do it. hee hee.

    @Tushar
I didnt realize it while writing that how I never mentioned Linklater. Its funny because all these years that was the only reason I would sometimes think of this film as something I should watch, if only to finish Linklater’s filmography. I think the reason is unlike his other very personal films, he was a Hired Director. This was a total ‘Black & White’ film. Linklater’s job was mainly to reign in Black from going overboard. But he did everything perfectly. The opening sequence was quite rad. And He chose the most perfect kids & handles them very well.

    Also..
As you can see the reason I wrote this post was because I was taken by this film completely unexpectedly. I dont listen to Rock that much anymore except for led Zep & Floyd. After the movie I decided to get wasted and go to a rock concert in 2008.

    Better Candidates?

  4. Tushar on June 11th, 2008 8:07 pm

Awesome post Mainak on School of Rock.. I’d loved this hilarious movie when when I’d watched this few years ago. Any rock fan would love this one. I didn’t know this movie is Richard Linklater’s. He made a beautiful & engaging “Before Sunrise” and this totally different Jack Black rock-comedy…wow. I’ve to watch this again now.
@Tushar, I agree.Even I was surprised to see its not posted by you…hehe

I have to check out tenacious D. I dont mind any jack black film, even if he is not meant to be all through the film as in orange county. almost famous..wrote a post on it long back.

  20. Mainak on June 12th, 2008 10:16 am

    Yes Sourav
That Air Crash scene was one of the best scenes about bands. I saw parts of Tenacious D. Its Ok. I could watch it because I lived & worked in the neighborhood where Tenacious D lives.

    Tushar
Did you know that Orange County was written by Mike White also. I think it was the start of their collaboration.

    @Filmbhai
    Thanks for your vishesh tippani!
