SHAME ON YOU MR SUBHASH K JHA – share the whisky with me

This post is sponsored by

SHAME ON YOU MR SUBHASH K JHA

To
Mr Subhash K Jha,
Mumbai Mirror,

Sub : WRT your article here (and a PLEA for RESPONSIBLE JOURNALISM and BLACK LABEL)

Respected Sir,

The idea of filmmakers copying foreign films and passing it off as their own without so much so as a breather about the original film, let alone buying the rights of the original; is known to all of us… including you.

What simply takes the cake and the cherry is how some of the more ‘responsible’ film journalists and critics emulate such film directors.. and look no further Mr Jha .. I’m talking specifically about you.

As they say, like father like son…. (No Pun intended, this is Apan-Pun)

TOI/mumbai mirror is one of India’s widely reading newspapers..and when a journalist who for the lure of perhaps a few thousand ruppes, or a ‘peti’ of Black Label Whisky, copy pastes an entire article from a non commercial website like PFC, and passes it of as his own… in such a leading News Daily … all I can do is but wonder Mr jha, don’t you have an iota of self consciousness/courtsey to at least MENTION the site’s address on the article ???

Did you bother to contact any of the site administrators, or even try to click on the CONTACT US TAB of PFC, which even a 5 year old with minimal english skills would have managed to do, without the assistance of his computer literate 90 year old great grandmother !!!

Do you even happen to know THE SIRNAME OF SRINIVAS, whose article on PFC you passed off as an “interview” ?? And no I’m not even talking about having the basic courtsey of informing the short filmmaker, who had the good luck to meet with one of the most influencial directors of recent times.

Srinivas is really really really upset and crying right now that you have not put up his picture with Tarantino on your newspaper. As his close friend, I offer you another ‘peti’ of Black Label whisky to please do the same !!! I know i know you will relent now. Don’t deny Mr Jha. Admit it please. I have caught you ‘black handed’

By the way, please ignore the miserable pun in BLACK here
http://server1.msn.co.in/boxoffice/articles/output.asp?urlid=63

Gawd! Can’t some of my colleagues in the press see how we are used by disgruntled elements in the showbiz to settle personal scores?”

Ahem ahem ….

Yes Indeed Mr Jha.. your entire article sounds like a mollification for the criticism Mr Sanjay Gupta recieved after the world discoverd the Kaante-Reservoir Dogs connection. And you have emulated him in true style. Yes True Style, but no substance !!!!

And how would you be expected to know the Creative Commons License Deed, under which PFC is covered. How are you expected to know that copy-pasting articles from blogs and using it for commercial purposes without the permission/ acknowledgement /mention of the author/source is ILLEGAL.

The Creative Commons License mentions clearly that articles can only be copied by other sites for “non commercial” purposes and giving “due credit” to the site where the article is first published.

If english is a problem, the license is also availabe in other foreign languages…and i have a special BHOJPURI version too !!!

Next time Please feel free to give in to this irressistable urge for stealing and passing it off as yours, without any credit.

But do remember, to share the money/whisky that the you recieve from “whomsoever it may concern”, with me !!!! I’m always ready for Patiala Pegs and lissome legs.

Thanks and Regards
Kartik Krishnan

P.S : Please do not reply with “I was not copying.. it was merely an INSPIRATION…”.

=)) damn you said it KK!!! But WHO THE FUCK IS THIS JHA and why didn’t TOI, a prestigious organization, check the credentials? Or did they simply choose to step over all copyright laws of the internet?

Oh by the way we are gonna ensure that any search on this copy cat of a journalist on the internet will lead to this post of yours…

    2. kartik krishnan on May 8th, 2007 11:00 pm

OZ – I’m on tough ground now !!!

Next time I meet Mr Jha at a party … He will threaten me with the same bottle of Black Label and say “We’re gonna connect” !!!!

Or he might say “I will show you who the fuck i am !!!”

    3. Gopi on May 8th, 2007 11:08 pm

OMG! This Jha dude is sooo wannabe, its not funny. Responsible journalism is taking sides so blatantly (w.r.t. the black article) that you come across more as a PR agent than a journalist And if need be plagarize stuff to achieve that (sycophancy taken to a different level).

Oz – Subhash K. Jha is the person who goes ga ga over the big b every other day in toi or mumbai mirror or glamsham.com or indiafn.com. come on i am fan of mr. Bachchan but what he does is just plain arse licking. every second day one can find article about Mr. Bachchan or Abhishek or Mrs Jaya Bachchan and now the new Bachchan.

    12. fanatic on May 9th, 2007 1:41 am

ya this jha writes about everything concerning amitabh bachchan. Even if Big B farts, he will write if it smells good or bad. And would then figure out the reason why it smells bad, what Big B ate the other day that caused indigestion and the bad smell of the fart.
And the reason he is become so big is only Big B. At many oaccsions Bachchan has said about his so called fart friend subhash k jha!!

    13. Durgesh on May 9th, 2007 2:06 am

      KK,

You are shooting in the dark. THe TOI is full of such copy-paste charlatans who call themselves “journalists”. Most of them have also lost their sense of reality.

And OZ, the TOI a prestigious organization????????

      Bhwat r u smokin’ nowadays!!!!!!!!!!!

    14. jai on May 9th, 2007 2:31 am

“and that’s how the story of mr.Jha ended”,

      beware period.

    15. RK on May 9th, 2007 2:40 am

Jai: No where in the world history has kept record of sychphants or flatterers. One who is honest with his/her profession gets place in the history.
Amitabh Bachchan and his family members, none of them needs as actors any flattery from anyone but SKJ provides it.
Amitabh Bachchan and his talent will be recorded in history but who cares for SKJ. He has lost more than half of his life. Hope he takes care for rest of his professional life and becomes independent in thinking and doing!!!!

      On generalization:
SKJ is name of a disease spread among journalist and even in common people also who are indulged in any kind of flattery which is not required atleast in creative field.

On many occasions Big B has said my good freind n my close freind n this n that skj…And thats why other actors are also forced to talk to him. If they dont take his call,in his next column he will write some bad things about that actor for sure. U hav to read his weekly columns…they r so dumb n so funny!!!

Why cry? yes being unhappy is ok because the credit is something you deserve and you havent got it so take him to the court.
But then it anyways helps in publicity, isnt it??

Anyways yes your well in time reaction is great because that would make this post readers a little more careful while reading the next article from the journalist!

    45. RK on May 11th, 2007 1:43 am

      Ankur:
If fame was not good for PFC, and material was not quality oriented then SKJ like established and veteran journalist did not need to steal the material from this website.
Its not cry to gain publicity as publicity automatically comes with good work. Cry is to see the shameless act done by a known journalist and journalist is known in India as close friend of The Amitabh Bachchan. and Times of India is understood as one of the biggest daily news paper.
Now its obvious that Amitabh Bachchan might not said Jha to copy the material neither TOI might have said. But SKJ, after stealing the material freely from the PFC, tried to establish, Kaante as approved ripped off of Reservoir Dogs of QT though facts can be different.
First Hollywood films, leave execptions, are not released in India at same time when they are released in USA and at the time when RD was released it was not in fashion to release so revenue matter was lost. And keeping that factor QT might have not minded ripped off version. But do it with his latest film and he will come in India to sue the film maker who has done it.
To get an unterview from a world famous film director like QT is not a joke. SKJ has to go to USA and its not sure he gets an apointment or not and then he would get some thing to write as interview. Here he visited PFC, copied the material which he cant get in his life time and published it in his regular column. PFC is non commercial forum but SKJ earns his bread and butter and luxury from his articles so he must be thankful to the source from where his earning came in this week.If he is a man with some self respect then he should have stopped his mistake being published again in TOI delhi ed, but if he ignores then civilized people have full right to discuss and spread matter far and wide that ” Logon sawdhan ek chor basti mein aya hua hai”(a thief has entered the area, take care of belongings). Dont you agree with cautionary steps?

    46. Amit Kaundinya on May 11th, 2007 3:26 am

Hey great article dosed with a good amount of humor and you definitely drove the point of plagiarism home.

But I did not quite understand your statement that PFC is a noncommercial site :-? . You have google ads floating all around your website. You have a paypal subscription calling for donors at the footer at your website. But still you call it non commercial.

With the amount of viewers you get daily and the adsense optimisation on PFC, I am quite sure you must be making good amount of moolah. :d/

Pardon me if i got things wrong, but please do clarify

    47. kartik krishnan on May 11th, 2007 3:52 am

Amit – “non commercial” as in the entire money of uploading the articles and maintaining the servers etc comes from the pocket of the moderator of the site….

Trust me – he’s not even 10% close to breaking even ….

The ad clicks/donations happen out of free will of the viewers ..which again is a paltry sum compared to expenditure involved.

And u might understand that there is no “regular income/market” unlike the biggie nespapers .. which run into millions of subscriptions …

Which is why it’s more irritating coz such journos are minting money out of plucking articles straight from the website…without giving any credit to PFC ..let alone a piece of dough they make/peti of Black Label.

And finally, this is not the first or the last time for this to happen.

      Thanks for dropping by

    48. Amit Kaundinya on May 11th, 2007 4:17 am

And so i dont feel there should be any problem

    50. RK on May 11th, 2007 6:17 am

      Amit Kaundinya:
on upper righ corner you will see buzz section, in that read I view- you can read there how you can send your article for publication at PFC.

Re: your second q, SKJ did not ask Srinivas or PFC before lifting the material. Any commercial website could have ben happy to publish Srinivas’s interview with QT.
Its strange that you cant understand that SriNivas and PFC own the IPR of this article. One cant come and use this freely as he wishes. SKJ is a commercial writer and he shd use his brain to write his columns and should take medicine for his kleptomania.

    51. striker on May 11th, 2007 6:17 am

amit, srinivas wrote the article on PFC.. mumbai mirror copied the article from PFC.. then TOI copied the article from mumbai mirror.. PFC comes under the creative commons attribution license. the article by MM and TOI are in breach of this license because the article first started out on PFC. moreover, they shouldn’t just mention “srinivas, a short filmmaker” as the source.. do they even know his surname? no. proof that they lifted the article, simply bc the author of the article is listed as srinivas. shoddy journalism at their end, to say the least.

as for your interest to write on PFC, your best bet would be to check out projekt i-view which we have started up on PFC. you can find details on projekt i-view under the “buzz” section of the homepage. wishing you the best…

    52. Gaurav on May 11th, 2007 7:01 am

I hate to spoil the party here, but I fail to see how Subhash K Jha’s article is plagiarism. He does mention that the article was based on Tarantino’s interview with Srinivas. I admit that he should have linked to the PFC post, but the article was primarily meant for print, where attribution by linking is not possible. Subhash K Jha is one of the better film journalists in India and I think you are unnecessarily hyping this up. Enough now! Stop!

    53. striker on May 11th, 2007 7:28 am

gaurav, no offense.. but if you find this to be too much, i guess you weren’t on the guest list for this party in the first place.. hope you find your way outta here

    54. oz on May 11th, 2007 7:43 am

Gaurav, Thanks for a different opinion. Let me correct you on one point… in the past PFC articles have been published in the print media with due credit in the form of courtesy: passionforcinema.com
So you mentioning that “linking is not possible” is not true and it is an incorrect statement. If your statement is true then anyone could go ahead and copy and paste articles from your blog anywhere and mention “courtesy: blogger Gaurav”, and under the garb of “oh we don’t know HTML so linking is not possible” – keep publishing a articles from your blog without linking back to you but surely mentioning always “courtesy: blogger Gaurav”… I’m sure you definitely are not gonna be OK with that. Think about it…

Even if Subhash K Jha, in your view is a good journalist, it doesn’t mean he can be let off on those instances of bad journalism. The question of Jha being a good or a bad journalist isn’t the point of this post.

    55. Amit Kaundinya on May 11th, 2007 8:07 am

striker, karthik : I get your points. Me joining the party now….. Shame On You Mr. Subash K. Jha :d

Hey is Project I view my best bet for writing For PFC :( (
I write more than once a blue moon and wanted to write atleast weekly for PFC.
By the way what are your stringent rules for being a writer. I’m sure I will be able to satisfy them completely.
As I’m ONE HELLUVA MOVIE BUFF and i think i can manage to write well tooo . So can i becomne a permanent author just like you guys on PFC? I know it’s a tough call…but TRY ME OUT :x

    56. Vinayak on May 11th, 2007 8:35 am

This is interesting. Many readers do not even understand how SKJ managed to piss off so many people. They don

    57. Jwalant on May 11th, 2007 11:01 am

Agreed that Jha should have given the credit but then it could also be that the paper edited out PFC name in the article. It could be that Jha may not be responsible for it at all and may not deserve to be called a “whisky-lured”, “sold for few thousan ruppees” and about “Bhojpuri” and “like father and sons”

To Amit, Gaurav, and anyone else who doesn’t get why this is such a big deal, let me put it to you in a different way.

Lets say you made a pretty good short film and somehow got lucky but getting a big name to work in it. I liked it your film, and saw its potential, so I take it and make a whole bunch of DVD copies and sell them on the street to thousands and thousands of people, making $$$ in the process. On the DVD cover I say “A short film by Gaurav and Amit”. Just Gaurav and Amit. No last names. No direct link to you.

Did I ask you before doing so? No.

Did I put any work in to make the film? No.

Was I even there when you made it? No.

      Do I know you? No.

Am I profitting off your work? Yes.

Are you getting anything out of this? Well, I got your name up on there so you might get some recognition, but financially its all me and not you.

Would that be a big deal to you? Or would you be like “well, he did put my name on it so I should be cool with that…”

      C’mon guys…

Subhash Jha is the most notorious fellow in Indian film journalism. He has already been sliced and diced in Tehelka interview of Shah Rukh Khan. He is a real irritant. He knows nothing of journalism although being one for such a long time and having reached such great heights.

    63. Anurag Kashyap on May 12th, 2007 6:06 am

come on guys lets cut him some slack.. he is not such a bad guy.. so what if he licks ass.. do not judge a man by his sexual orientation.. so what if he has a crush on big b, small d and bhansali.. he manages so many aliases.. he is so professional that he never forgets to ask for the count of the day.. just because he doesn’t write about us we should not criticize the yellow yellow dirty fellow.. his article atleast had one original line.. he told us who was the bearded legend of bollywood that tarantino was talking about..”none other than amitabh bachchan’.. i was thinking QT meant kumar gaurav

Ajay, isn’t the above letter sent out to the media by Shiny Ahuja’s and Shilpa Shetty’s publicist and spokesperson? Kartik was talking about this a few hours ago.

i think i had read something in Bombay Times a few weeks back that was exact copy of something in PFC…i don’t remeber the exact words but i think it was Anurag Kashyap saying that if John Abhraham is well directed then he is a fine actor…it was from one of Ak’s blogs for ‘No Smoking’…n yeah i understood how big a sucker is Subhash K Jha…:d

    69. ajay on May 12th, 2007 9:17 am

      oz,
true.dale has exposed skj in that letter.i thought it will put more light on his personality.

    70. dikra on May 12th, 2007 11:52 am

you guys are taking yourself too seriously…do you seriously think that a multi-million dollar empire like toi will EVER issue a retraction or an apology? you’re delusional. all you can do is chest thump about some reporter who took your article and doesnt/wouldnt give jacksquat about this. because you know and I know and they know that after all this chest-thumping/beating, y’all will go back to your porcelain thrones to read….surprise, surprise…the toi. seriously, be grateful that the guy even got referenced in the article. toi steals propreitary pictures off the net all the time and noone has ever gotten a peep out of them – so this is just a small thing and you all you guys can do is increase sk jha’s readership with all this ranting and article-linking.

    71. Preeti on May 13th, 2007 8:26 am

I just read the article I think its fair on Mr.Jha’s part to mention the source. Its an artice about an article thats only fair….

[I agree with Dikra.... It may not even be SKJ's fault must me mumbai mirror who must have dropped the reference to PFC hence they carried the clarification. If it was SKJ's mistake I doubt they would carry that... I dont think we are being judgemental about the man. I have read SKJ stays in Patna and almost never comes to Mumbai I am sure this keeps him away from all these underhand dealings in the film indistry]

Is it fair that we have this kind of a page on the net against someone?? I hope its not illegal. Anyway I enjoyed reading all this I read SKJ’s coloums in the papers regularly I am just a avg film buff and didnt know so much about him. Its fun to have such spaces….power of the internet at its best\worst.

I have nothing for or against SKJ just amused reading all this… god he must me imp to have so much being written about him. I think most of them were unfair towards him cause they sounded persoanl but I guess the bitcher they are more fun to read for a guy like me.
      :d
I will be visiting this site more often to get such gossip its cheaper than buying those filmi magazines to read stuff u know is fake or tp.
      Thanks!

The saddest part of this whole episode is that Subash K. Jha is not the only journalist who is doing stuff like this. There are a lot more cut and paste journalists like him, but unluckily SKJ was caught red-handed. I have seen reviews by well-known critics and writers that have been blatantly copied from foreign newspapers.

It is good that PFC is carrying out a campaign against SKJ. Hopefully, the other people who practice cut and paste journalism as an art will learn a lesson from this.

We Indian lack everything. When a group beats someone, we never ask why? And we start beating up this guy along with the group. We never raise any questions. We simply become part of the erring group. This is absolutely rubbish. I know SKJ. He is so simple and intelligent that one cannot make out that he is the one of India’s top most film critic. He is at par with Khalid Mohammed, Nikhat Kazmi etc. I smell some foul play by some group who is against him.
