Shankar’s & Priyadarshan’s favorite cameraman Jeeva
wb | Breaking News, Movies | June 26, 2007 at 3:52 pm
One of India’s talented cameraman and an upcoming Tamil director, Jeeva died of a massive coronary in Russia, where he was with his crew shooting the film Dhaam Dhoom, under severe weather conditions for the past one month or so. He was 43.
Jeeva began his career in films in 1993 as a cameraman working for the movie Gentleman, which was Shankar’s directional debut. Jeeva himself turned to movie direction in 2001 with 12B which was a rehash of the hollywood movie Sliding Doors. His second movie as a director was Run the hindi remake of the Tamil namesake. Then came the Tamil movie Ullam Kaetkume (the heart asks), which was a coming to age movie. His last movie as a director is Unnaale Unnaale (because of you, because of you) in 2007, which was his biggest hit as a director.
He had worked as a cinematographer for almost 30+ movies, most of them super hits. He had worked, and has a good rapport with Shankar and Priyadarshan.
As a director Jeeva introduced a lot of new faces to Tamil movie industry — Asin, Shaam, Arya, Pooja, and most recently Tanisha and Vinay with Unnaale2 .
Jeeva, who worked as a still photographer for Manirathnam’s Bombay took Islam after marrying a muslim girl – it was a love marriage. He is survived by his wife Aneesha who is a popular dress designer in Chennai, his three children, and a younger sister who is married to Tamil director Vasanth.
His body is on it’s way to Chennai.
It is shocking and sad that we have lost a great upcoming talent like Jeeva.
PFC deeply mourns the unfortunate demise of this young talent.

Wb: its a sad news and loss to films
I have seen only Run. He took good work from Abhishek Bachchan, Mukesh Rishi and Vijay Raj in this and perhaps its Vijay Raj’s best comedy performance till now. loud but nice comedy. Abhishek was quite good in the film.
RK bhai // Haven’t seen Run in Hindi, having watched the original Maddy’s version in Tamil. Jeeva was getting better as a director – his U2 was the best of the lot – but was an excellent cinematographer to begin with. Loved his work in all his for Shankar – Gentleman, Kadhalan (hum se hai muqabla), and Indian.
I loved his work as a cinematographer very much. Especially his work in Sachein.
Justin John // Yes. Sachien. Jeeva’s glossy picturization made up for the lack of content to a large extent, making the movie a hit. Loved the camera work in the songs, and that one slo-mo scene when Vijay gets chased by a baddie in SUV.
Liked run.Music was good
Is he same Jeeva who was in acted in satya as Jagga sheth or commissioner Suchak in Ab Tak Chappan?
Shailesh // There is more than one Jeeva in South Indian cinema. The Jeeva who is usually seen in RGV films (Satya, Ab Tak Chappan, Sarkar) is a different Jeeva. The Jeeva I wrote about was the cinematographer/director who passed away. And there is also this upcoming Tamil hero whose name is Jeeva.
Sad news indeed. Read about it this morning. A very talented cinematographer. The first film of his that I watched was Vaali which starred Ajit in a double role. The movie was ordinary, but it was Jeeva’s superb camerawork that stood out, the amazing tension he created with his camera movement. The eeriness and the thrill. May his soul rest in peace.
He was the guy who gave us great moments like the heli shot of Sydney Opera house in Indian. A good director who held out a lot of promise and who always believed in introducing new faces to Thamizh film Industry. It is a big loss to the cinematography community and film world indeed.
Sad News indeed. May his soul RIP
The Tamil “Run” was made by Linguswamy a former AD of Mani Ratnam.
Jeeva as I have seen in his interviews was very enthu and energetic……His Ullam Kekume had a fresh feel to it despite it’s delayed release…it was also a hit I guess.
Sad.A loss to the Film Industry.
Not on the topic but another DOP turned director has also done well….KV Anand with his Kana Kanden….I liked the film….had a very crips feel to it. KV Anand recently handled the lense for “Sivaji”
What?!!
I didn’t even hear about this!
Oh man.. i truely feel that the indian film industry has had a huge loss!
If i’m right, he is the same man behind the splendid visuals of the Tamil film ‘Khushi’ too.
I always look out for his films as they are shot wonderfully, and are very pleasing to view.
Even his ‘12B’ had some great cinematography, as expected.
This really is bad news…and i just hope his work inspires many other upcoming cinematographers to provide films with the same standard of brilliance as he did.
sundar/ Jeeva’s 12b i have watched more than 20 times, tamil cinema world losed a great cameraman and good director!
