Sharmila, Uma Da Cunha in Cannes juries
Runumi G | Breaking News, Festivals & Contests | May 4, 2009 at 4:56 am
Actress Sharmila Tagore and film critic-programmer Uma Da Cunha will serve in the Cannes Juries this time. And that’s the only Indian representation in the festival, which does not have any Indian entry this year also.
Tagore will be in the main competition jury, headed by French actress Isabelle Huppert. Da Cunha will be a member of the Un Certain Regard section jury.

Way to go ladies…
Yah way to go ladies! Some one brought to my notice that you never get indian male jury at cannes. Just a thought, no sexist comment intended. Is it just because we dont have worthwhile males in indian cinema. I wonder what the bachchans and the khans have to say about that?
lol.
is sharmila goin to award a best actor award to her son saif like when she did in 2004 for national awards?? wot a joke!!!
Nick..good observation..
Ram M…Hum Tum is a classic..It contains detailed characterisations and the highly challenging role was potrayed with utmost reality by Saif…Mammootty acted really bad in Kazhcha to lose out to Saif…So did Kamal in Virumaandi…I think Saif was the obvious choice without any lobbying
Utpal – Not sure if this is the first time Uma is going to be on th juries. Lemme check.
Utpal – Please ignore my above comment. I missed the only indian representation part and not about the first time. My bad. ;)
Wow! This is great news! Some Indian representation!! I wonder when will :
(a) We make films that deserve to be in Cannes
(b) They not look at Indian films with a certain bias which is not of the nice kind
Both of these put together have kept our films away from the best film festivals.
Ram V – surely you must be joking about Saif’s national award. I find it hard to believe that Saif’s performance in Hum Tum was better than any other, all over India. Please!
If there is sarcasm intended in your post then I am obviously missing it. Saif’s and Amitabh’s awards (for Agneepath) convince you that the National award jury is as corrupted as anything else. Sharmila on the Cannes panel is a bloody joke!! Who makes these reccomendations??
Savio..ha ha…were you taken aback…read this piece which I had written earlier..http://passionforcinema.com/festivals-awards-celebrities-recognition-but-where-is-indian-cinema/
Not only Saif and AB, what about national awards for Anil Kapoor, Raveen Tandon.. ..
Great! But honestly was surprised that Sharmila Tagore is there. No offence but Cannes suddenly realizing ST’s existence….may be bcz shes the censor board head…or may be its my ignorance…but such good news is anytime welcome…
