Shaurya : A few idiotic men

Perhaps it is the destiny of writer director Samaar Khan, to make a movie that by sheer coincidence turned out to be just like something called ‘A few good men’. Perhaps it was a mere coincidence that Samaar Khan, (who I am informed), is a former movie critic. Perhaps it is a mere coincidence that so far ALL movie reviewers trying their hand at film-making have immensely helped in redefining the term ‘shit‘. Perhaps it is a mere coincidence that whenever Rahul Bose opens his mouth (in the movie) you run to throw up in the bathroom (in the movie theater).

Perhaps it is mere coincidence that Javed Jaffrey looks more gay in crop cut hair and tight army uniforms than those fancy dress competitors at San Francisco’s gay parade. Perhaps it is a mere coincidence that Kay Kay Menon is by some terrible terrible terrible mistake, in the acting profession, perhaps he had applied for a bank accountant position and suddenly one fine day when he woke up, he had Mr. Samaar Khan sitting by his bedside, offering him a job of a “Brigadier” in the Indian army. Perhaps it is a coincidence that every flow, delivery and expression of Kay Kay in the climax (the best albiet a word to word copy of ‘A few good men’) reminds you of Kay Kay’s penultimate scene in Sarkar. Perhaps it is a coincidence that Kay Kay has stopped acting and stretching his creative capabilities, instead using 6 patented template expressions for every scene, performance, film since his last few films.

Perhaps it is a mere coincidence that a four shop mini mall at God knows where can be turned into Srinagar Airport, simply by changing the name plate from “Mini Mall” to “Srinagar Airport”. Perhaps it is a mere coincidence that Mr. Samaar Khan thought that, that Mini Mall now does look like an airport on camera, and actually shot the stupidity. Perhaps it is a mere coincidence that that stupidity is repeated every 10 minutes throughout the movie. Perhaps it is a mere coincidence that a Brigadier has no orderlies to serve him and his guest, alcohol… scotch to be precise.

Perhaps it is a mere coincidence that Deepak Dobriyal and Jhaanwi Talwar were the only two shining actors in a film full of idiots (Kay Kay’s performance included). Perhaps it is a mere coincidence that after watching Rahul Bose “act”, I’m changing my name to Marlon Brando. Perhaps it is a mere coincidence that there were some excellent crisp dialogues in the screenplay that turned into a 10 day old soggy samosa whenever Kay Kay and Rahul opened their trap to speak those excellent on paper words.

Perhaps it is a mere coincidence that even an inspired, copied disaster like ‘Shaurya’ raised two key issues - the ever growing shooting of army officers by their juniors and the never before mentioned atrocities that ‘may’ exist of the Indian army on the big screen. Perhaps it is a mere coincidence that the movie ended before the two issues could have been sharply focussed upon.

Perhaps it is a mere coincidence that I have a sharp headache after watching the movie, in spite of knowing that it may be a copy of ‘A few good men’.

Lastly, it is no coincidence that you stood up and clapped for the movie’s star performer Deepak Dobriyal. Having mastered the arithmetic of acting, Dobriyal’s portrayal of Captain Javed Khan, is nothing short of a wounded lion who roars through his eyes.

D Plus. A 6 pack of aspirin is a compulsory requirement in order to view this one.

Is this Samar Khan the same guy who used to present a weekly review show on Star some years back?
To all those who have watched his show…. his sensibility should not come as a surprise :)

  16. Neeraja on April 5th, 2008 5:38 pm

lol I guess I am still gonna watch it. Kay Kay ki khaatir :D
Didn’t even mention Minisha Lamba? Perhaps a mere Coincidence.

  17. Yogesh on April 5th, 2008 6:40 pm

Raja sen (rediff)asked a very valid question
    in his review
“In the end, however, Samar Khan has this to answer: what does it mean for a film called Shaurya, a film about true valour and the human spirit and a moral code, turning out to be yet another rip-off? ”

  18. Yogesh on April 5th, 2008 6:50 pm

OZ …me thinks u r little too harsh on Kay Kay.
But agree that he’s stopped being creative .
    he’s capable of lot more.
Wish he finds out soon what a big repository of ‘templates’ he is.

  19. Sanjeev on April 5th, 2008 9:56 pm

Samar Khan had joined NDA to get into the Army but quit midway. Then I think he joined Star News. Now he is making movies. I was told this by a guy who is from NDA.

  24. Bob on April 6th, 2008 2:32 am

:o I think you guys are a little to harsh on the movie…I watched the movie last night and was pretty impressed with it.. Not sure how many of you have watched it…, but I guess whats happening here is what we call as “heard mentality”…. people are voicing their opinions on something that they have’nt seen… which is quite unfair… I agree the performance of some of the actors is not what is expected out of them… but whats particularly appealing is the subject that this movie broached.. I recommend you all should watch it ateast once….

  25. Surendra Hiwarale on April 6th, 2008 4:08 am

brothers and cuntry men please don’t accuse KK… he must have got his price and he must have did just what the director must have told him… Not his fault at the end of the day… after all he too needs to keep himself busy…

  26. Surendra Hiwarale on April 6th, 2008 4:09 am

ooops… so sorry, i genuinely meant country men…

  27. suvir on April 6th, 2008 8:49 am

i was planning to see the film par lagta hai ki apne paise bach gaye

  28. Sourav on April 6th, 2008 10:40 am

This review is really bullshit similarl to what the reviewer has claimed regarding the film:) Kay Kay was brilliant in those three scenes that was given to him and roared to make viewers bite there nails with his dialog delivery. Rahul bose is awesome and just the way he has expressed with his eyes when he was scolded by his senior is worth a praise. I do not give a damn if it is a copy of any english movie as long as the final product is good, and this one is much better than just a simple good. I in fact brought the cd of few good men after watching Shaurya. I would definitely agree that few good men is a great film but that does not undermine the efforts by the director, writer and actors of Shaurya who have turned up shaurya almost equally good.

  29. oz on April 6th, 2008 1:19 pm

    - Sourav, “Kay Kay was brilliant in those three scenes”

Q to you: Have you seen a Brigadier talk so fast with such a weak body language in real life? For that matter have you ever met a Brigadier in real life to know what gross mis calculation Kay Kay has made (except of course in the last last scene?)

    Your shit doesn’t hold here.

  30. Ajay Kumar Saxena on April 6th, 2008 9:39 pm

    @OZ:

i haven’t seen a few idiotic men.. but to be frank all of us , who , went to watch the movie , really loved it.

I believe its a good movie to watch out !!.

  31. indraneel on April 7th, 2008 5:41 am

Yaar..Oz…iss baar thoda harsh ho gaye tum..agreed that it was a rip off..agreed Kay Kay was playing to the gallery..but so did many actors including many venerated ones - Sanjeev K, AB, KamalH, Uttam K, Jack N, Al P, Marlon B, George C and so many more..C’mon..that’s not fair yaar..we see so much tripe most of the while..that a half way good one is also an Oasis for the parched ones!
Perhaps it is a coincidence that I also saw Bhram and then sat down to write this and perhaps it is a coincidence that I also saw “One Two Three” before I responded to your scathing take!!

  32. the blind artist on April 7th, 2008 11:29 am

Kay Kay Menon was good in the movie.

Every actor, gifted or not gifted, has only got one face. He can’t invent a new face for every movie. With that face, comes a set of expressions, and those will be there whenever you see him. It can’t be helped.

What perhaps is happening here is that people got bowled over by the novelty value of this fantastic actor but now, after a few years, the novelty is beginning to wear off. Same thing is happening with Irfan, Konkona, Ranvir et al. The novelty is wearing off. It always does, with everything. What remains is the actor, and his set of expressions.

So be kind to the actor. Accept his face, mannerisms, expressions, and then see if he helps you feel for the character. If he does, great. If he does not, better luck next time.

PS: The dig on Javed Jaffrey was in bad taste.

  33. Gajendra S Shrotriya on April 7th, 2008 10:14 pm

Never witnessed such an annihilation before… duly stamped with the Oz mark

  34. Krishn on April 12th, 2008 11:14 pm

Shaurya, my most successful film: Rahul Bose

“Everybody after seeing Shaurya is full of praise for Kay Kay…and rightly so. But it’s only now that I’ve started getting phone calls for the credible sane element that I represent,” Rahul told ….
