Shootout at Lokhandwalla – Why?

oz
oz   | Review | May 25, 2007 at 9:40 pm

Why are movies like “Shootout at Lokhandwalla” being given the green signal? Why do two or more production houses – firms that house people, living people, – come together to produce such movies? Why is Apoorva Lakhia still directing movies? What the FUCK does “true rumors” mean?

Did the team of SAL think the audience has scrambled brains? Did the team of SAL think that we, the audience, munch these scrambled brains while watching their movie? Did the team of SAL really understand the long forgotten word in their dictionary called “script”? Does the team of SAL have the word “script” in their dictionary? Had the producers of SAL seen Apoorva Lakhia’s previous mind numbing releases called “Mumbai se aaya mera dost” and “Ek Ajnabi” before agreeing to produce this movie?

Is Abhishek Bachchan now guaranteed a role in every Lakhia movie, since they are friends and it doesn’t matter how and what way Abhishek is pushed into the story? Did Amitabh Bachchan even have an inclination of the disaster he would be stepping in? Is this the best role an esteemed actress like Amrita Singh can get in Bollywood now?

Is there no more intelligence or any traces of it anywhere in those rich producers’ brains, who back such moronic films? Are there a separate pair of brains these rich producers are born with, that they use to make money? Is there any God’s law that the same brains the producers use to make money in other fields, will not and shall not be used in the film making business?

Shouldn’t this movie be shown in mental asylums than in the movie theaters? If the filmmakers make such movies on the pretext that only 10% of film goers go for quality intelligent movies like Metro or even a Bheja Fry, are they assuming that 90% of Indians are idiots? If so, shouldn’t we be more concerned on the sum total of our deteriorating intelligence that is gonna take our country to the dogs in the next 50 years, than spend money on prickly seats, ghetto like Indian theaters in the US and septic tank content like movies like SAL?

Is a hand camera, close up shots of lead actors, action poses and loud background music the only ingredients needed to make a super hit movie? Do directors, writers and producers build a good story first and then analyze it’s hit value or vice versa?

Are we paying some kind of a penance for some previous life’s shit, by watching movies like SAL in our present lives? Will someone sponsor Apoorva Lakhia and Sanjay Gupta to come and study story-telling at University of California? What sleeping pills did the team of SAL take while making this movie, to forget that neither Aishwarya Rai or Bipasha Basu were in films in 1991?

Why do I even bother to go out and see such movies? Why don’t I take a gun and blow my brains out than subject my cerebellum and medulla oblongata to such torture?

Is there any alphabet that goes below “Z” so we could grade this crap?

OZ, one of the Maya Dolas aide was peon at my agency and his nephew was my graphic designer…am writing on Mayas real life since more than a year…the shootout part is not even a 2% of it…and if i’ll start tearing Sanjay Gupta gang apart for SAL, it will take pages…The only thing I can say is If someone wants to make a true Gangster story (not fuckin rumor) film, he should respect the legacy of that gangster..

Maya Dolas and gang singing “Shake your ass, shake your ass baby”…wot daa faaa..

I don’t want to watch this film b’cos it is directed by Apurva Lakhia. If the movie was directed by Sanjay Gupta, I would have surely watched the movie. Some of my fav actors like Sanjay Dutt, Sunil Shetty, Tusshar are in it. But still just because of my alergy towards Apurva, I would stay away from the film.

Maybe I will watch it if it survives.:d

    LOL @ the Rediff Review!

I haven’t seen the film, but admit I was looking forward to it. I wasn’t expecting a hardcore realistic drama about the life of a criminal, that much you could tell from the posters/trailors. It was filmi, it was meant to be a “filmi takkar” of “gangsters vs. police” in a showdown. But that didn’t mean it was going to be all that bad.

I admit to watching both Apoorva Lakia’s films (on DVD after reading such bad reviews) and hating them. So uselss, so boring, so much wasted potential.

Shootout I was also planning as a DVD watch… but now…

Yaar, ab dekhhein bhi to kya dekhein… life is shit for lovers of hindi films like me…

I still can’t frigging understand how these guys make movies? Bachchan saab with due respect rejects some of the great scripts given to him but accepts such shit only because his son’s best friend is directing. Don’t you think that Bachchan saab, than Indian Cinema has given so much to you, it is time for you to give a little back by encouraging honest talent than these hollywood returned american accented, walkie talkie carrying shitholes?

Let’s assume how Shootout at Lokhandwala might have been made.

I happened to be at the premier of this crappy film in Bombay. Four young girls were walking in front of me when we were coming out of the auditorium and their conversation made me so mad that I almost wanted to stop them and ask them which planet they were from. This is their dialogue:
“I was so sad yesterday when I watched this movie. I was crying when the boys get killed. Today also I burst out in tears when the boys are killed.

The boys this and boys that…and they said.
“Let’s go and tell this to Appu he will be so proud.

You can imagine my anger. The symbolic Jesus crucifictiion image wanted me to scream so badly while watching the end. Sorry I spoiled the word symbolic by using it in the same sentence.

  24. I think Vivek was excellent in the film.
Sanjay Dutt was good, Tushar looked convincing to me.

I liked the movie, but to each its own.

I watched it in NY, Manhattan was sold out – so I went to the theatre in Jackson Heights – packed. People loved the movie here – again, its the masses kinda audience here.

The movie is not a classic, its not a masterpiece – its a KEWL popcorn masala movie.

    Just like OCEANS 12…
wasnt good like 11 but the mere presence of big stars and their interactions made it worth $11.
    Same goes for SOAL…
the songs r awesome – unke nashe mein, GANPAT, aakhri alvida naa ho.

I could be wrong, but the initial reports – and the perfect long weekend brilliant release timing… this movie is gonna be a HIT – India and OVERSEAS.

Surprisingly, Sanjay Gupta and Ekta Kapoor – decided to distribute this flick themselves globally – smart move.

Anyway, curious – ANURAG KASHYAP Sir – what’s your review on SOAL?

    Oz,

maintain objectivity… precisely what PFC should be doing and precisely what you should be doing… its perfectly ok to dislike a film or to criticize a film… i am not getting into an argument about something as subjective as an opinion… i am adressing a larger issue here…

PFC has grown much beyond expectation and I think that along with growth comes a certain responsiblity. when all of us criticize the print media for their biased reviews and for being unfair we beleive that we are right in voicing this opinion. similarly, we should be open to opinions that are voiced about us…

i think PFC has grown far beyond being seen as bitter, childish and just angry. i firmly believe that a certain amount of responsible restraint leads to far greater respect for ones opinion.

there are many kinds of films we make. irrespective of the merits of the film there is a great deal of effort and resources that one puts in making a film. all of us have our opinions and we are entitled to them… but in our voice of dissent, dislike or anger we must show dignity… i think PFC deserves that from you…

This whole review was about everything u are against. Everything PFC is against.

Isn’t PFC about a bunch of people passionate about films trying to create a network which can be accessible to one another at any given point of time so that anyone who isn’t part of the industry can access it?

Do you think we will achieve that by marginalizing a huge section of the industry?

If today you open the door to having personally vitriolic reviews who is to stop it? Comments like the esteemed Macchar Kumar cant be asked to rein in as he has been invited through the door

Liking or not liking a film is a very personal choice, if 90% of the people like SAL they don’t become idiots and if 10% dont like it they don’t become intelligent my friend.

PFC is not some bunch of blokes shooting the wind about movies and taking personal jibes at the industry anymore. Its become much bigger than that and is more widely read.

Today Apoorva Lakhia given a all india box office hit with strong overseas which is near impossible for an A rated action film to do

Lastly my friend even Ashutosh Gowariker made Pehla Nasha and Baazi before he made a Lagaan.

Anurag, It was all meant in humor and apologize if anyone is hurt.

You have to understand, we are all not rich people. We do one project, survive for months on that money. But due to our love for cinema , we have to watch each and every movie! There is no escape from this. Every time I watch a movie I keep hoping that my money is not wasted. Especially when the ticket was priced at Rupees.250, you feel that you need some entertainment. 250 bahut hain boss…it hurts…

When you imagine crores of rupees spent on making a movie, by these so called gods of Indian Cinema and they don’t even value the intelligence of the viewer? I keep imagining what I could have done with that 250 rupees. I could have paid off my newspaper guy…I could have brought a new pair of chappals to replace that were worn off.

I could have sent that money to someone who called me and said he/she wants some money to buy something. But I as usual like an assole cannot resist a new movie. I usually never go by the critics, even though Rajeev Masand warned us it was a idiotic movie, Rediff.com blatantly told me to miss it. But I did not…

You must be asking me “no one forced you to see it”. Yes, but I am forced to see every major hindi cinema with big actors. Because I feel uneasy if a movie is running in a hall and I haven’t seen it yet. I clearly clearly needed a headache tablet after watching SAL.

Seriously. I clearly did not understand the Khalistani link to the Shoot out at Lokhandwala episode. What was the point Khan was trying to make? Okay, Khalistani terrorists killed an inspector, and Khan killed them…so? He wanted to scare off all the terrorists right? But then? If he is supposed to scare everyone, why did SAL happen? How the hell is it anyway connected to the main story?

I don’t feel for any of the characters…Nothing…I don’t connect with them..none of them moves me…Inspite of similar cold blooded attitude, Bhiku Matre, Kallu Mama, Satya, all felt like someone I know, someone I would want to know. I was emotionally connected to them.

Here…none..I was laughing when the TV set was crashed over Tusshar seeing his expression. I was in splits seeing Vivek becoming a wall paper.
Arbaaz Khan has great potential and a great actor inspite of the role given to him. Why don’t people use him for better roles? He has the capability to connect with the audience.

As I said, it hurts…it’s lot of money boss…It’s our money that goes into the film makers pocket…they atleast have some respect for this fact.

Sunil shetty is Kaviraj Patil…. isnt that a marathi name ??? I asked all my friends whether Sunil was looking a marathi from any angle.. They all shook their heads.

Sanjay Dutt wears Reid and Tailor Safari Suits throughout the film. Which IPS officer does that in the heat of mumbai ????? And fuck he is smoking Malboro Lights ??? Is he a cop or a Bandra Bandstand ka “Dude” ???

Pray why have Amitabh give witty repartees in english ??? Purposelessly ??? Just to sound cool ??? just to give him attitude???

It was so easy to figure out from the promos that a film like this is nothing but a waste of time and money.

Most of the actors dont even look like the characters and the songs dont even look like Gangsta types..

Would have been better to watch the Penguin Love Story on Nat Geo on Sunday Night, than watch a crass film like this.8-|

“Dude/Girl, whats wrong in making movies like SAL or hopefully WOODSTOCK VILLA – which are and will be watched by millions?”

@Manan.. U didn’t get it when u saw the movie. U didn’t get it from Oz’s review either. You seem to have watched this film expecting a brain dead encounter of the mind. You actually felt Tushhhar looked convincing!! Now when you’ve already made such a statement, I wonder why I’m even trying…

“I mean, seriously – something has to be right right?”

Well, whats right is that it panders to the taste of the aam junta, a taste which you rightfully share, which is why you like the film.
Mindless item songs, Deep cleavage(not focus), leaky script, you have superstars like AB, and AB Jr(pretty much a part of the resources I had mentioned earlier) who are used just for the publicity…

The resources also involve film stock, technicians, equipment, studios, extras, etc etc.. which I as a small indie film maker cannot afford to use… at least not right now.

Whether he makes movies for white feather of Yashraj, he has passion for cinema and that counts.

Hansal Mehta tried, the hard way…without stars and still trying. The way he took risks with different plots put him in a different league unlike Apoorva Lakhia who always wanted a shortcut to fame and never really learnt the trade and uses his friendship with Abhishek to the hilt and will NEVER have the guts to work with newcomers.

I am sure we are about to see the best of Hansal Mehta, woodstock or not.

akki, i think answering your question will give it the importance it does not deserve.

my only request was that PFC is a place for passionate dialogue on cinema. our reviews need to be dignified and should respect the freedom of expression provided by the net. it has been unfortunately misconstrued. i respect opinions and welcome healthy criticism. my point is that when personal agenda and prejudice come into such discussions there is a dark cloud over any healthy exchange. i have neither tried to defend or offend the above film because i have professional commitments to sanjay gupta/white feather films which might be misunderstood as they are being currently. it is an attack on my integrity which i would rather combat with silence than with any juvenile retort.

sadly, this entire discussion has turned into an ugly, defensive and personal exchange. i would therefore prefer to refrain from commenting or responding any further.

havent seen the film. dont intend to also.the promos n everything were a big put off for me. no doubt it genrated good buzz though.

n guys what is this question of being “responsible” bcz pfc has become bigger!!! common ya, its all about liking or not liking the film.even to make z-grade films, u need actors, technicians, money n put lot of effort.so plz dont put the criteria of judging the films based on the efort that has gone into the film. yes,all of us r biased. like all those good words for anurag n black friday.but its nothing liek that if d film deserves zero and pfc will make it 10. lil biased will make it 1 or 2. similarly if it desrves 8, then atmost it can become 9,not 80. before SOAT, many films hav been thrashed left, right n centre. so,its nothing new.

and if the criteria is box office report, can we hav standing ovation for Dhoom2,Krrish,Vivah, Fanna n what not!!!

hansal,u r doing a film for whitefeathers n suparn, if the news is true, then u hav been signed by sanjay gupta. is that the reason for liking the film ? or may be u guys really liked the film. the satan in me wants to believe its all bcz of….u knwo what!!!

Original : Preceding all others in time or being as first made or performed

It was claimed that it wasnt a fuc*in reamke of some chinese, japanese, korean or
a hollywood flick. That was something we all did like to believe.

was it fuc*in inspired ? from the fuc*ing true rumours?
kindly check the meaning of the word

Rumour :Gossip (usually a mixture of truth and untruth)
passed around by word of mouth

can the makers of S-A-L justify their caption or part of title.

Inspiration : A product of your creative thinking and work

it means when you work without thinking creatively you dont have a product.
simple. in this case we are talking abt the film.

research : Systematic investigation to establish facts

when the actors fuc*ing claimed that they did the research to get into the
characters what the fu*k they meant? how is it hard to get a indian female actor into a fu*king

cotton saree or how hard is it to stick shilpa bindi on the forehead.

Looks like the hornet’s nest has truly been stirred…yeah, we at the PFC gang do probably get too er, passionate about films and criticism…but then that’s what great about this place, man! However, I admit that we must refrain from getting obsessive and abusive…don’t be overly offensive and debates and discussion can still continue full blast! And so, while parts MK’s long winded ‘comment’ may be construed as unintentionally offensive, I think Oz’s review is completely rockin- it kicks a**!
@Suparn-”Today Apoorva Lakhia given a all india box office hit with strong overseas which is near impossible for an A rated action film to do”

I don’t really agree here, the mass audience just looks for entertainment, which a Krrish or Fanaa provides them in equal measure to SOAL. That is by no means an indication of a film’s quality. For me, a grand but not as successful Omkara or Black Friday is an infinitely bigger achievement. And with all due respect, pls don’t compare Lakhia to Gowariker…er, not yet atleast! Good luck to you and Hansal- I am sure you are honest filmmakers and hope the best for ur ventures. Last word- SOAL is a step in the right direction for WFF, atleast as far as origiality goes!

Nuff said- let’s move on to more constructive discussion here…ang get a little polite earnest n courteous (even if for a while, hehe)
