This is a remake (i donno if approved one) of
    ‘Udayanaanu Tharam’
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0430710/

The Malayalam film was a comedy at the outset, and the story undercurrent , among other issues, prominently looked at, who is the captain of the ship Director or Actor…A brilliant script by Sreenivasan…which was officially remade in tamil as ‘Vellithirai’

This is crazy! I like the promo – BUT c’mon you gotta credit the ORIGINAL WRITER of the movie, i.e. Sreenivasan, it’s his story. How would anyone like their ‘idea’ to be plagarized like this.

Please Anil Kapoor atleast credit Sreenivasan as the original story writer for this movie.

And I also hope B’wood fans know of this!

  9. Sreenivasan’s film ‘Udayananu Tharam’
is influenced by Hollywood movie “Bowfinger”
    (I like Sreenivasan’s scripts)

Not exactly Shekar…though the review in imdb points out that it is a version of Bowfinger…I have seen both and except for the fact that ‘an actor is shot without his knowing’ for the last ten minutes of Udayanaanu Tharam, which infact is the major theme of whole of Bowfinger…

UT is, as I said earlier, a detailed analysis of the director Vs actor, debate, loaded in chunks of comedy . The name of the movie derives from the fact that ‘Udayan’ the director (character played by Mohanlal) is the real star, ‘Thaaram’.

So it is sort of a declaration that director and script are the real heroes of the movie…

Unlike Bowfinger which is totally different crazy take on Hollywood (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0131325/) read the spoilers included review, if you dont have time to see the film…

I enjoyed Bowfinger too, its Eddie Murphy joyride..

  11. Sreehari Sreehari says:

My personal belief, “Udayanaanu Thaaram” was an extremely overrated film. “Katha Parayumbol” was unbearable. But UT was the first indication that Sreeni was slipping.

There are people who say that he has lost his touch. But I strongly believe the problem with Sreeni is that he hasn’t graduated. He has hung on to caricatured characters for too long now.
I was watching that brilliant movie “Sandesham” the other day and you see the problem with Sreeni. It’s this constant attempts to satirize every entity. What worked for “Sandesham” may not work for every world that u attempt to touch upon. This search for ‘Congruency of passion’ is the biggest crime that a writer can commit .
You end up marginalizing emotions that way. You tend to divide the world into ‘The ethereal’ and ‘The nefarious’.
I thought Mohanlal was pretty good after a long time. I mean, he was, after a long time not employing that tone of ‘Forced Pedagogy’ that has stayed with him since ‘Manichitrathazhu’. But otherwise UT was just too unimaginative a movie.

I don’t give a damn to how Shortkut shapes out. And to be very honest we should not be crying hoarse about reverent acknowledgments, cos at the end of the day the movie would only be upholding or tainting the worth of a pretty toothless predecessor.

  12. Ram V Ram V says:

Sreehari…Sreeni always wants to make a few observations on humans or society as such…He prefers to sugar coat it with humor…Sandesam can be entirely enjoyed just for its humor or for its commentary/observations…
Whereas ‘Vadakkunokki Yanthram’, ‘Thalayana Manthram’, ‘Ponmuttayidunna Tharavu’. ‘Chintavishtayaya Shyamala’ all had the believable characters who displayed emotional confusion, not ‘ethereal’/'nefarious’ silos. The thattaan in PT was perhaps beautifully etched, especially, the ‘Thattan Thatti’ idea, which shows his practical side, was well carved out in the screenplay.
Sreeni is a genius…He does not trivialize much..but just applies a sugarcoating of humor…
I loved the way he established the lead character in Chintavishtayaya shyamala…The character is very difficult to describe…He does not want to do any work so ends up doing several things…A strange paradox, extremely well handled…satarical ofcourse…But I have come across a person very similiar to this character and when I think of him, its more his mindset ( which is extremely funny) that pops up as the relevant image than his daily tragic tribulations….
UT may not be his best…It was infact his worst as an actor…He went extremely overboard as ‘Saroj Kumar’ and was hamming uncomfortably to induce forced humour..
KParayumbol or Even Arabikatha was too superficial for one to appreciate its characters…and is definitely not the detailed Sreeni movie one would expect…Sreeni is not the same anymore..

  13. Ram V Ram V says:

Regarding acknowledgement for Sreeni in ‘Short Kut’…there are scores of other movies which have been theived by several scriptwriters in India from extremely unimaginable sources…
Copying is a norm…We are indifferent morons and nobody seems to bother about it much..whatever maybe the quality of the original content…copying is still copying…unless properly credited
Its good if people started getting a bit more professional..which includes Sreeni as well who copied ‘Analyze This’ as a horrendous ‘Bhargava charitham 3 kandam’, whose story was shamelessly credited to director Jomon. It is different story that if the original makers had seen BG3K they would have definitely not filed any lawsuit, but in turn be indebted to Jomon and Sreeni for not crediting them for such a horrible torture.

  14. Sreehari Sreehari says:

    Ram,
Ponmutta Idunna Thaaravu was Raghunath Paleri’s screenplay
I am not disagreeing with you on what Sreeni has achieved up until Shyamala (which I really liked btw).. But since then, those caricatured versions of characters he has created have all been pretty horrendous. I just HATED Katha Parayumbol. “Hated” is the word. It was so pathetic to see the way actors like Innocent and KPAC were portrayed. And UT was just plain disappointment.

I just don’t understand the general film-going public in Kerala. Sethu need not write an article pondering about what’s ailing Malayalam Cinema? It’s pretty simple isn’t it? The audience just about ingests anything that directors offer. I think the case with Malayalam Cinema isn’t about FILMS NOT DOING WELL as much as it is about MEDIOCRE FILMS DOING WELL.
A Thanmatra, a UT, a Katha Parayumbol, a Nandanam, the list is endless.. I found “Orey Kadal” extremely bigoted. These films doing well is a pretty sad case..

  15. @ Sreehari-

yes when among the lacklustre films playing if the better off ones are a Thanmatra,a UT,a Katha Parayumbol,a Nandanam etc, these are obviously going to be well received.

look at the movies running now- you have veterans like Suresh Gopi & Mukesh doing an atrocious Kanchipurathe Kalyanam.veteran I.V.Sasi makes a Vellathooval which is heading nowhere, veteran Fazil makes a stupd Moz and Cat.

So in this midst when you have a 2 Harihar Nagar,a Bhagyadevatha or a Passenger, it will get noticed. My heart cries out loud seeing the situation, I’m sure you,Ram and all other lovers of Malayalam cinema also feel the same.

Ore Kadal and Kazhcha were the best of the lot in the last few years…especially for superb performances from Mammootty in both…

There is always a vaccuum period in any industry..for malayalam its been going on for the past ten years or so…

I completely agree that low quality movies are meeting great acclaim and success..I watched twenty20 recently and was taken aback, such horror movies would not have even run for 10 days, 15 years ago..this one seems has crossed 100s of days in theatre…Movies such as Thuruppu Gulan, Mayavi, Chota mumbai, Hello and Harihar Nagar2 all are extremely low in quality, but were last few years major hits..Its sad and bad..

PT was Paleri script..I never took note of it…

  17. @ Ram-

all said and done, the movie ( Shortkut )’s credits might include Sreenivasan for all one knows.yes Sreeni hammed to the core as Saroj Kumar in UT, but I think it went down well with the masses.one of the main reason for Vellithirai’s failure was that Prakash Raj went OTT and there was no balance between his character and that of Prithviraj while it existed between that of Mohanlal and Sreenivsan in UT.

If ‘Shortkut’ credits Sreeni..then good..else we continue copying as usual and dont care…
The presumption that ‘it went down well with the masses’ does not in any way approve bad acting…I have not seen Vellithirai..If Prakash Raj superceded Sreeni’s horrible performance..then that should be really worse.. :-)

  19. Just checked the credits of Shortkut ( what’s available online ) ans strangely the c-directors are Neeraj Vohra and Roshan Andrews. The screenplay is credited to Anees Bazmee.Saw no mention of the story credit.I hope with Roshan getting credited, Sreeni also will be credited in the movie. Its supposed to release on July 10th.

And no by saying “it went don well with the masses” I’m not supporting/approving bad acting. But all said & done I did like the initial scenes of Sreeni with Mohanlal and also with Jagathy ( acting workshop-navarasangal )

I had read in some malayalam Newspaper , that Anil had invited Roshan Andrews, to direct hindi version of UT, after watching it in mumbai’s multiplex. But then the there was nor word or news about that.

Was roshan replaced by Neeraj ?

  21. @ Cinemausher-

My guess is that Roshan might have started working on it & then Neeraj probably was drafted in to get the hang of Bollywood in the movie.Since its all bout the film industry and Roshan would not have an insider’s view of Bollywood as he’s from the Malayalam film industry. That might be the reason both are credited as directors.Of course this is a guess and if anyone knows more on this, I am interested to hear the fact.
