Should he be trusted?
Anubhav Sinha is planning to make a film on Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination. And apparently, he needs 20 crore to make that film. It would be good to see a film on Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, but can Anubhav Sinha be trusted? Would he able to do any justice? So far he has done out-out masala films and his last film was ‘Cash’, which did not make any cash. This is still at the infant stage, though
Anubhav and research team have been gathering material for months on the entire complex manoeuvres that resulted in the shocking death of Rajiv. They’ve apparently chanced upon some startling and hitherto-unrevealed facts on the gruesome tragedy. “It’s true,” Anubhav confesses. “I’m doing a feature film on this subject. It would be an entire celluloid investigation of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, tackling questions that were never asked, let alone answered. I hope to shoot and complete the film by the end of next year.”
I think, this is just a gimmick, to keep himself in the public; I mean, who the hell is going to give him money after Cash? I hear you… I know, there are enough fools out in the industry to give him money.
But, if you think about it, there aren’t that many good films on our politician or Indian politics? How many hindi films can you name which are entirely based on Indian politics or politician? And out of that how many films are really worth watching?
So for that reason, I would be very interested to see a film on this particular topic, however, the film should not be directed by Anubhav Sinha. Who should direct a film on this topic? Who should play Rajiv Gandhi? And what happen to the movie which was based on Sonia Gandhi’s Biography - is that film shelved? Raj Kumar Santosh’s name comes first to me mind.. and Akshaye Khanna to play Rajiv Gandhi?

a film on rajiv gandhi’s assassination is alredy made in malayalam. It is directed by Major Ravi. who was head of commando team who caught the main man behind the assssination ‘Sivarasan’ and some others from their hideout in Banglore. the films name is “MISSION 90 DAYS” .Mammootty played the role of major Ravi in the film. it was more like a documentary and so was not a big hit there but it got good critical acclaims
Really, I did not know about that. I am a bit of novice when it comes to non-hindi films. So what are the chances that he will be masalafying this critically acclaimed malayalam film on Rajiv Gandhi..?
i caught some scenes of “MISSION 90 DAYS” … it in no ways can be said to be “documentry like” … Not quite impressive … at least those scenes that i caught on TV…. i cant say abt the movie now … i will watch it first !!
hey Arun was it major Ravi who directed another “army movie” with Jeeva and Mohan lal??
IMO, Sardar is a very good political film. I strongly recommend it if you haven’t seen it already.
I second your opinion: Akshaye Khanna would fit the role of Rajiv Gandhi.
Anubhav Sinha…no no…
I am not sure abt R. Santoshi though…considering the subject matter… I think..Manirathnam or Ketan Mehta…
Ashutosh Gowariker made Baazi and pehla nasha before lagaan, and Anubhav actuall made the most seminal Tv series before he was corrupted by T Series music videos, starring Manoj Bajpai, Vineet kumar et al. You never know.
Rajiv ganndhi was killed once. He will be killed again. this time by anubhav sinha. cash, dus..ab bus!!
@vikrant…sardar is one of my all time favourite film. paresh rawal is superb. wish he would put his acting talent to some better use. enough of chaddi-nada type roles.
oz…was it sea hawks ????:-?
@george,
Yes george.., it is indeed thae same major Ravi who made the army movie with mohanlal and jeeva, “Keerthichakra” which he said is based on his experience in kashmir. It is truly worth watching.
Its not justified that you say that someone can’t be trusted to make a film just because his previous films are all crappy. Atleast he made a few efforts and he could have learnt from it.
For all I know, the initial films of any director are always learning experiences so you never know…
Was’nt there a movie made on the Rajiv Gandhi assasination starring Anupam Kher? Or was this movie shelved?
If Anubhav has researched well,as he claims, and if he does away with the music video songs and glam dolls, and sticks to a well defined script ala Oliver Stone’s JFK,he could surprise us !
His action shots are after all, pretty slick.
why not? most of his films have flopped even it had star actors in it and good music - i know that does not equal to a hit film - but the type of films he was making - all those factors should have made his films hit amongst the aam junta.
so why should he been given more money to come up with crap films when those money could be used to encourage new fresh talent!
He has so far made five films! And in half of those films he had star actors to work for him, but still nothing.. he is only interested in making music videos and not films. And if T-Series are backing up this project, then you can forget…..
//For all I know, the initial films of any director are always learning experiences//
Yes… But, the sensibility that shines through is still the same… I mean, the way u treat your characters.. the way u understand them..
A decent to good director even in the learning stages will always give u the hint that he has come into cinema after having put a thought into what goes behind that involuntary applause that he had once showered upon a movie. He will always put forth a sense of individuality, that wont see movie economics or the general public perception that exists about the medium. His individuality wud show..
He knows it and he wud constantly try strive towards attaining that sense of individuality. There might be glitches that might come out in his work but those glitches we all know can always be improved upon in time..
Dus and Cash aren’t films that can ever be seen as a part of a director’s learning curve. In fact it is a sign of a director who, if he has to prove himself wud have to start all over again as a greenhorn and build up his image.. Therefore the trust level automatically goes to zero..
Just veering from a juvenile form of entertainment to a more supposedly serious issue isnt reason enuf to trust a director’s surge in any way. Unfortunately, in India, that kind of migration is often wrongly appreciated and seen as a sign of courage..
Exactly… I agree with Sreehari.
anyway, if two films old Sujoy Ghosh or three films old Farhan Akthar was contemplating to make a film on this subject then I would have backed either of them for the film… well, most people would back Farhan Akthar but not Sujoy Ghosh.. where as I would have….
do you guys remember that film by santosh sivan on terrorism? i liked it very much
I CAN GUARANTEE YOU GUYS,
THIS FILM WOULD BE A RIP OFF FROM “JFK”….IF I KNOW HOW THE BRAIN OF MR.SINHA WORKS HE MUST HAVE SEEN JFK DURING THE WEEKEND AND TOLD HIMSLEF HEY WHERE CAN I FIND A DEAD ASSASINATED POLITICIAN…??OHH HOW CAN I FORGET MR.RAJIV!!!!
gosh cant we people think something original!!!!!!
Ok, I get what you guys are saying about Anubhav when referring to the last four films he’s made. But no one mentioned anything about “Tum Bin.” His first feature, for which he was writer and director, was a very good genuine effort, I thought. I actually had hope in the name Anubhav Sinha after seeing that first film. I’ve only seen one other film of his, and well…yeah I can see how he’s only gone downhill after “Tum Bin.” But does “Tum Bin” not shine out to anyone else as a decent first-time effort?
There was an offbeat movie in Kannada called “Cyanide” released in 2006, which was critically acclaimed and also got few state awards. It is about the assassins of Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, when they were hiding in Bangalore. And how they were nabbed (dead). I heard it was one of the best movies to come out of Kannada industry that year. Though, I haven’t got a chance to watch it yet.
@ Sreehari and HG: I agree with the sensibilities part of it. But I think any film-maker should be encouraged if he/she is trying something new or not formulating idea’s based on the trash that’s meted out.
Dus & Cash sucked, BIG TIME but maybe he will dish something this time cos seriosuly, I don’t know how imaginative he will get to romantisize Rajiv or the tamil rebels who did it…
Or as Harsh calls it, cautious optimism.
@Phoenixnu : I think Sardar is Paresh Rawal’s best performance so far. Yes, he was awesome in Herapheri but it pains me to see him do the brain dead comedy again and again. Apparently, he is also fed up of this kinda roles and want to do substantial stuff but he is not getting any good roles (I read this in one of his interview somewhere..I think rediff…but don’t quote me on that). At least AK used him well in NS.
@Honhaar goonda: you raised a very valid question in your article…yes, there are very few movies based on Indian politics or political figure.
I liked Benegal’s Making of Mahatma but his movie on Bose was not up to the mark (ARR’s music was phenomenal though).
Few months ago I got a chance to watch a movie on Jawaharlal Nehru (Nehru - The Jewel of India
its free online @ rajshri.com…it was not a well made movie…still couple of scenes were really good…especially Nehru’s interaction through letters with his Dad (Motilal)…Nehru as a person was so layered(i.e. complicated) that a movie on his life would make a really interesting story. His vulnerability sets him apart. I think his story deserves a better movie. A more honest one… but are we ready to see Jawahar…or we still want chacha Nehru???? trial and error is the only solution….
I liked the Gandhi my Father also for its ‘almost’ honest portrayal of Gandhiji…I think Gandhiji’s character needs to be explored more on personal level based on his “experiments with truth
“…Gandhiji as a person and not as a leader or as a mahatma.
Why I said NO for R. Santoshi is…due to his lack of courage in portraying Bhagat singh as he was…aside from being a hero and a martyr…
Bhagatsingh was a learned and an intellectual human being…his philosophy of life was ahead of his time…granted that he was influenced by Lenin etc…but than Gandhiji was also influenced by Thoreau (esp. the civil disobedience) and Mahavir.
…there will be several interesting story…but what I am after is the reason….why these stories are untold…I think we(Indians) are maturing as an audience and it is right time to bring these stories on celluloid.
…considering his honest treatment of Black Friday…AK would be a good choice for such movie…if he decide to do so.
On a side note, Hollywood has not made a movie on my personal favorite scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer. There is one movie on Manhattan project… ‘Fat man and little boy’ (I had to watch it for many reasons…Newman was one of them…) but it doesn’t reveal even a 10% of what Oppei was. I recommend ‘American Prometheus’ to every one who are interested in his biography.
I am sure that in a next decade we’ll see a movie based on this story…I can picture Edward Norton or Christian Bell portraying Oppei…
To set the facts right,
Rajiv assassination was first made as a film by R.K.Selvamani who was on a high after giving three consecutive super hits in Thamizh(Pulan Visaranai, Captain Prabhakaran both with Vijaykanth and Sembaruthi with Prashanth) . The movie was titled “Kutra pathirikkai” (FIR). The movie had Anupam Kher playing Rajiv’s role. The movie followed the exploits of Karthikeyan the SIT chief. The movie was inexplicably held to ransom by Censor Board and Congress party and host of other vested interests for a period of 12 years. In 2006 censors decided to release the movie with only 190 odd cuts, meaning no two scenes in the movie had any continuity at all. The movie was produced by R.K.Selvamani’s photographer, talented Ravi Yadav who had to flee Chennai to evade financiers and he finally resurfaced in hindi movies as DOP. After this movie’s plight no one dared to directly reference the assassination in even lightest of manner, till a Malayalam movie “Sathyam” starring Mamooty used the assassination plot. years later Kannada-Thamizh bilingual Cyanide (Kuppi in Thamizh) starring “Urvasi” award winner Tara was released in 2007. This won a lot of critical acclaim and centered around the story of Mridhula Ranganath wife of a Bangalore entrepreneur who gave shelter to Sivarasan, Subha and Nalini for weeks after the assassination. Incidentally the movie only covered the travails of the house wife and hence the director J.M.R.Ravi got away from censors and politicians lightly. Major Ravi’s story is also more focussed on the investigations after the movie and has nothing new to add except the contrversy surrounding the delay in CBI top brass action once Sivarasan’s hideout had been unearthed in Konanakunte in the outskirts of Bangalore. The most tragic aspect of all these projects is obviously the strain that this plot gave to R.K.Selvamani and Ravi Yadav who lost the best years of their careers.
@Anand Kadam..Yes..it was SeaHawks and gave us Madhavan as an actor/ star. There were some other notable actors like Manoj Pahwa who have since then done well.
I used to watch the unit at work then..as I was working for the hotel that they were shooting in.
Anubhav has never done any good with scripts, technique is where he has some forte. Also, Dus’s success has gone to his head! Very visible in Cash!!
Note this point, my lord: “They
And commenting on Indraneel:
Dus got some glowing reviews from Raja Sen, the Rediff critic!
Goes on to prove how shallow our critics are, and how they survive on word-play!!
Must give it to them - Jha and Sen - both have a flair of good writing, and even if you don’t agree with them, their style is fascinating
There is a very Optimistic ravptor…..
