S.I.K ; AAM ADMI FILM MAKING??
Films like Singh Is Kinng is made specifically for the common man, meant for entertainment, not for snobbish intellectuals, AAM ADMI FILMS as the majority of these directors are calling it. So we have films like no entry, welcome and now Singh is Kinng hitting the theatres and all of their producers seem to be overtly confident of the success of these films depending on the AAM ADMI. So who is this aam admi or common man? The people for whom cinema is a luxury, who has to plan and save for weeks to go out on a film with the whole family. They are the people, who when pays 1000 bucks for a movie outing with the family wants pure entertainment, without any obscenities, violence and vulgarity. Something they can laugh at whole heartedly while sitting next to their son’s and daughters.
Now it has become almost routine during the publicity of every film that the producers and cast members specifically highlights the point that their films are meant for the enjoyment of this group called the “AAM ADMI”, well dear directors and the hapless people who are putting their money on creating these Frankenstein’s on screen, I would consider myself as a part of these aam admi’s you are targeting, it does cost me a lot of money and puts a lot of strain on my monthly allowance that I get as a college student to go and watch a film every week and am not sorry to say, your films neither entertains nor satisfies me in any way.
A few years back these same producers used to claim that they make films for the INDIAN AUDIENCE and don’t care for the West, and now since a majority of India’s films goers are moving towards a different kind of cinema they off course have managed to find a new target group. A group that not only holds the majority but to whom promises like “wholesome” entertainment is almost divine. Its not exactly the Indian audience but the biggest majority in the house. Now do these producers and directors actually care about what the common man wants or are they concerned if they are entertaining someone? The answer simply is no they don’t. They don’t care if you enjoy the film, you get value for your money, all that matters to them is that you should spend your hard earned bucks and come watch whatever they throw up on screen.
Some newspaper quoted a few days back that Singh Is Kinng is going to be the OSO of 2008, well although am not a very big fan of OSO itself I’ll have to admit the makers of that film genuinely tried to entertain the people.
Well the makers off S.I.K though tries hard to make sure the Aam admi relate to their film , so we are shown how unfortunate both HAPPY and RANGEELA ( yes that’s Om Puri’s name in the film) are since they are “garib” and the problems they face since they cannot speak proper English in the airport, and off course the makers have something thrown in for the usual saas-bahu serial lovers, a poor mother sitting by the side of the road crying since she is “garib”, oh overlook the fact that she sells a single rose for $100. During the promotions I heard Akshay kumar saying how he considers it to be really unfair that Sikh’s in Indian cinema always gets type cast, according to him he did this to show to the audience that even Singh’s can be king. Well then Mr. Kumar must have skipped his script reading session for S.I.K because this film does exactly the same old routine of type casting, with a few old jokes from the old david dhawan films thrown in.
Without any doubt this film as usual will set the cash registers rolling, but I hardly doubt that its going to be because people loved the film, its more so because there is a serious drift of family worthy films in the theatres right now, and even if a handful ends up loving it, and I seriously doubt anyone honest with themselves can love this, it would have more to do with akshay kumar who truly pours his heart into the most dead pan role written. The scariest part is as soon as this makes the money at the counters mr.bazmee and company is going to start thinking of their next. It is needed that one of these films flop badly and the producers loose out chunks of money then maybe some sense and honesty is going to creep into them.
My heartfelt condolences to all those who have already booked their tickets well in advance, I just hope that you have a good time pretending that you enjoyed the film and that it was well worth that 200 bucks you spent. If you haven’t made plans for this yet then stay back home and watch Jackie Chan’s “JI ji” instead on video, the second half of S.I.K is lifted from this film or if you just want to have a good laugh go and read the Santa Banta jokes instead.

You are absolutely on the target…the world is now divided into two parts…those in the majority who care for nothing more than glitter for the eyes and fast food for the palate…they simply go by their instincts and impulses to please their senses; thinking is alien to them, they just want their daily fix to forget their robotic existence; they’ll laugh or despise you for even suggesting better alternatives…in short, they are beyond help…exhibitionists and voyeurs belong to one another as each cannot be without the other…but the other small minority who have some idea about quality cinema (or for that matter, any other art) have big problems…it’s like salty water inundating sweet water…there is no escape from the overwhelming trivia dished out 24/7…to search for quality stuff in that deluge is like the proverbial search for the needle in a haystack…hopeless business. The only road then possible is to choose to be a social misfit and live within one’s cultivated mind and imagination…one’s private garden with the sign at the gate–Celebs will be shot!

Very well said and kudos to you for having the patience to write a good long article.
I feel it such a waste of time to even talk about such films, I am appalled at how people get manipulated by the media, promotions, trashy gossip columnist…all of which hugely contribute to such movies getting stupendous openings.
Revival of my short-lived interest in Bollywood has gone down the drain again. All started when I bumped into JWM, a somewhat sweet yet Bolly kinda flick, which made me think that there are still Bolly movies which talk about average and normal Indians and does not resort to half naked women doing raunchy dance numbers. That made me dig all info on Bollywood to make up for the lost 10 years but **sigh**, too much information was not good, I guess.
I have realised that nothing has changed, Akshay has replaced Govinda and Katrina has replaced Karishma and Bollywood is exactly where it is when I left it. Infact, Indian audience has become even more tasteless.
SIK is going to be a super hit or whatever and we will be bombarded by more and more nonsensical film, good films will be drowned in oblivion and the selected few in Bollywood will continue to mint money.

Oh please Shut up. Aam aadmi, NRI audience, small centers..metro films..blah blah blah all crap.
Both the Munnabhai films were as much as your so called Aam aadmi films as they were for the rest of us. So was Lagaan. Do you get it? People should make films, if they know how to, and not excuses, which they are pretty good at.

This is bullshit. I can understand someone saying that he or she did not enjoy a film and for so and so reasons. But lecturing others on what they should be enjoying and what they ought to look for in movies is highly presumptuous. Why cant you just lay down in black and white what you liked or did not like about the movie and let each person decide for himself / herself? Maybe other people like what you dont like & vice versa.
And while you are at it, make a note that you will not put yourself through the same torture next time – for, at the end of the day, no one forces anyone else to go and watch anything that he/she does not want to watch.

Prolly an SRK fan.
Stop lecturing us. The janta is not stupid, it watches based on the credibility of the actors, directors, and the type of film they want to see. Just because you don’t like comedies, don’t tell others what they should or shouldn’t like.
It was clear from the beginning that the movie was for pure entertainment, and no one expected a Devdas or Jodha Akbar.

@sarah
Indian cinema are changing…it cannot happen overnight but it will change, American films took time to develop an alternate form of filmaking outside Hollywood, but it did happen eventually. am more than confident that things are going to change around here and its going to happen quicker than people anticipate.
by no means am i saying that the traditional bollywood films will die out because I’ll be the saddest if it does, but soon their will be an alternate form of cinema as strongly prevalent in cinema’s as films like singh is king

@AMIR R JAFFAR
“Both the Munnabhai films were as much as your so called Aam aadmi films as they were for the rest of us. So was Lagaan. ”
well the munnabhai films were great because they actually wanted to entertain people and just not make sure that the cash registers keep ringing, at the end of the day ENTERTAINMENT is the word that defines cinema doesn’t it?
if someone enjoyed the film and honestly says so then its good, atleast the makers of the film can claim they entertained someone but if as most of the people the just come out and say the film was great because they spent 2000 bucks for it then………
