Soda Water Bubbles - Guirella shooting

Soda Water Bubbles - Guirella shooting

This is my first completed short film .. that i made for filmaka.in. Theme is neighbours .

Actually this film was what i wanted to make since quite a long time. The starting idea was to have a chase sequence picturised at the background score of the foot tapping fast paced Dol Dol Song from Yuva. But because of lack of resources (actors), i couldnt shoot it back then.

Back in mumbai, when the contest started, Wasan told me to go ahead and shoot this one. The location was to be five gardens matunga. Where every sunday/saturday there are cricket matches. We visited the location and found the solitary basket ball court next to the five gardens as the most appropriate location. Shoot was to be on sunday with a mammoth cast and crew.

SUNDAY,
We shot the dialogues and the fight first. We realised not many actors had turned up, and hence we had to use the local Gujju boys who play cricket there every sunday. Told them to co-operate… and since we were shooting without any permissions (that too 5 mins from the former home of Bal Thakrey) we would have to rush…

Srinivas my cameraman and the editor, did wonders and all i had to take care was of the performances. The idea was to make it as close to reality and as “manly” as possible, which basically meant to shoot it with no restrictions on the abuses. Told the guys to go full on, let their hair down.

“What if it is rejected by filmaka or other festivals because of the abusive content ?”

“I don’t care !!!”

Then we shot the fight .. Wasan machcha rocked it… I told srinivas to shoot what you think is appropriate .. because the fight could not be engineered properly… told Wasan to take charge in the fight and boy he did … he rocks …

Told the locals to take a break and finally, after 2 hours of insane pateince, get to do
what they want -play cricket. Got some montage shots of Cricket.

Finally, the chase, realised i had only 5-6 guys i could trust with to run … and hence i
had to jump into the bandwagon … We shot the start of the chase and the end scene..before being interrupted by the police..

The cops stopped us and told us to packup. I simply froze in front of them … wanted to finish the film there and then .. the locations were simplyy too good and appropriate for the chase …. but couldnt help it. Wasan and Ashish tried to reason with them … but to no avail … We had to run to Worli … where we completed the last scene ….

2 weeks later, the chasers came into my house for the chase sequence. I was under the impression that airoli would be a reasonably safer place to shoot… The location i picked and loved was the place where a couple of months ago, a girl had been gang raped by some drunk junkies…

We were about to can the first shot when again, the cops came into the picture and played the spoilt sport again…

WHERE THE FUCK ARE THEY THERE WHEN THE SHIV SAINIKS, BAJRANG DAL, NSUI STUDENTS/GOONS ARE DAMAGING PUBLIC PROPERTY AND LIFE ????

anyways, cribbing apart, we paid the fine (ironically for triple seating) and changed the location. I was dissappointed .. that mini flyover was the best my chase could get, instead we had to shoot guirella in the gullyies and small lanes of airoli .. close to my apartment.

ONE TAKE … ONE TAKE . ONE TAKE shots ….. unrehearsed … unprepared .. chased again and again by the cops …

Anyways … here’s the film … feel free to comment .. any comments/criticisms/ brickbats are more than welcome ….

this is the 3 minute version for filmaka….

thanks to all those who were behind the making … special heartfelt thanks to you guys …

And a special BIG THANK YOU to the MUMBAI and NAVI MUMBAI POLICE for teaching me my first lesson, whenever shooting in exterior, always do shot divisions, rehearsals elsewhere, and just go on the sets and shoot ASAP

    Kartik
    Few Questions….
    Did you story board everything?
Was the framing a collaborative effort with your DP? or completely your own decisions?
    The Dialogues were cool.

    Which one was Ashish?
    cheers

  2. Joyjeet on September 13th, 2007 3:34 am

oye, ye to achcha hai. cheers! cheers!

  3. kartik krishnan on September 13th, 2007 3:46 am

mainak - i didnt story board everything …. in fact there was no story boarding as such … i just had few shots in mind and the rest was done with DP…
framing was a colloborative effort .. with lots of help from the DP …

    Thanks joy

hey i didnt know there were guys from pfc too in filmaka compt. i think your film creates the right mood and feel but i felt that your point, when its made, lacks punch and climax looked hurried. otherwise i think its not bad.

  5. Saurabh Dikshit on September 13th, 2007 4:38 am

Hi Kartik, loved the film, specially the dialogues. They’re too good. Though the difficulties in the chase scene that u’ve spoken about, shows in the film too. They didn’t quite look like chasing but doing a warm-up before the match. Lol!

  6. Rajeev on September 13th, 2007 4:53 am

    Kartik,

How much it costed you i.e. budget to make this…Good effort Brother.

  7. Honhaar Goonda on September 13th, 2007 5:02 am

not bad… now you guys have sort of made a miniscule step up, so we expect a big step from you guys in near future….

  8. gangolu on September 13th, 2007 5:50 am

Cool one dude!!! Loved the initial Dialogues. well done!!

  9. striker on September 13th, 2007 6:04 am

  10. kartik krishnan on September 13th, 2007 6:09 am

adesh - yeah … the ending couldve been slightly better

Gangolu and Saurabh - thanks bro :-)

    Rajeev - approx 6K INR

HG - i hope i can improve upon it …

Striker - ashish’s friend Alan rodriguez, the same guy who did the music for ashish’s short

  11. DPac on September 13th, 2007 6:26 am

excellent effort kartik once you think about all that you have said and take into account a chase sequence’s extra tech issues bhi hai…

but why did you use the music for the chase scene?
no issues using music, but on the whole it might helped the short better if you had just left the soundtrack for the short as it is and added some sound effects/foleys into it…

    Karthik,

The dialogues rocked (as you said they would). And the beginning was superb. But the ending was a let down. It could have been better.

  14. Pratim D. Gupta on September 13th, 2007 10:12 am

why would you end like that?

  15. Vijay on September 13th, 2007 10:30 am

Vasan was awesome! A good first effort KK. Now that you have a good feel of basic technique like shooting and cutting, focus on writing in your next endeavor. Experiment with character development and narrative structure. Best of Luck!

    I cant hear a thing??? :-?

  17. Gattu on September 13th, 2007 11:29 am

Mere Devdas KK, U spent just 6K then this is a marvelous effort. I saw the 1st cut without the chase. That is why I was disappointed, now I’m happy. :d

  18. ridemghost on September 13th, 2007 2:21 pm

Nice effort KK. Although it is your story but would have loved it even more if it ended without a conclusion.

How about those 2 guys agreeing on on putting up a brave front and then taking off at the first sight of guys coming to give them a tanning ( so much for the brave front ). fade out.

No offense meant , its just my angle.
    keep up the good work.

  19. Tushar on September 13th, 2007 4:55 pm

Bhai, I liked this cut even better.
I want to see Manjeet bhai abusing like hell the next time :)

btw, maine ye office mein hi dekha..lol

  20. Ashish Shukla on September 13th, 2007 8:24 pm

guys before KKs film gets compared with mine let me clear few thing that…KKs effort was anytime greater than mine…because..

    1. It was first attempt of KK whereas I am into films since quite some time.

    2. I played safe having two characters, KK had a mammoth cast to handle.

    3. My budget was high and it’s all done by professionals…KKs film is purely indie!

so KK yaar…your balls are anytime bigger than mine(tht doesn’t mean you’ve got Hydrocele:D)

But fir bhi saale rota rehta hai…cheers dost…chk the appreciations and start preparing for your next:)!

    all d best!

  26. CC on September 14th, 2007 2:01 am

Pappu beta you stick to acting you are good at it,do not make films just because your friends are making films.

  27. kartik krishnan on September 14th, 2007 2:02 am

thanks CC - will follow ur advice

  28. Vasan Bala on September 14th, 2007 6:19 am

dil se khelo beta dil se….your heart is where your cinema lies…..tu tension na le….

CC interesting observation….give KK a 35 crore 10 film acting deal then he will stop making films until then….watch it or skip it….

  29. CC on September 14th, 2007 1:51 pm

Hey kartik/vasan the standards set on PFC my our men oz,anurag, surya et al are so high that the expectations are always sky high for anything on PFC,that may be the reason for the comment, any way i didnt mean to offend anybody and yeah kartik atleast had the guts to make what he wanted to make

  30. Pratik on September 14th, 2007 2:16 pm

Nice short Kartik. I agree with the majority : awesome beginning, chase was alright and a pheeka sa ending. But it’s your first and it’s good for a first short film.

abhi mere dil mein bhi kuchh kuchh ho rela hai. ab toh short film banane ko maangta-ich hai … kya bolta hai bhaa? b-)

  31. Machchar on September 17th, 2007 4:06 am
