Some funny hindi songs…
Normally I take the train to work in downtown Vancouver. Parking is, as you can guess, a bitch. So I never take my car. Today, however, was an altogether different story. Today I had to go a lot farther out, to the mountain town of Squamish for a product launch. It’s just outside of Whistler BC, and about a 2 hour drive from my home. I had to leave early in the morning and drive all by my lonesome, so I took some CD’s along for some company.
And for the first time in who knows how long, I really enjoyed listening to Hindi music. It was awesome!
First up was Jaane Tu.. Ya Jaane Na. I had heard the songs before online and in the films trailers. But, as you can gather, today was the first time I really got into the music. Fun stuff! Very refreshing, especially since A.R. Rahman’s has been composing some pretty heavy, epic sort of soundtracks. “Kabhi Kabhi Aditi” is the catchiest song I’ve heard in the longest time. I must’ve hit the repeat button a half dozen times in a row. That song alone makes me look forward to the film, the way those 90’s hindi songs used to. “Nazrein Milaana Nazrein Churana” and the title song, rendered by a longtime favorite of mine Lucky Ali, are great songs as well.
And then, of course, there’s the outrageous, riotous “Pappu Can’t Dance Saala”, one of the zaniest, craziest and out right hilarious hindi songs ever!
Later on I was listening to “Tashan”. Again, had sort of heard them before but today it was just me and the music… and admittedly Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na had put me in a great mood.
Have you heard “Dil Dance Maare”? I mean, really heard it? If Pappu Can’t Dance Saala was zany/crazy/riotous, then Dil Dance Maare is, to borrow a phrase from a delightfully demented old English prof of mine, “crazy-as-a-loon-&-mad-as-a-hatter!” It’s bizarre and more than just a little embarrassing, but if you can get over that then this song is pure fun! It’s like mixing Vodka and Limca (another personal favorite ;P ), it’s like watching a sardar wearing a gotte-waala-kurta , jeans and chappals dancing to hardcore rap music. And it is damn good fun!
Made me think about some of the other funny (well.. intentionally funny) songs we’ve heard over the years.
Remember those classic Govinda gems like “Main to raaste se jaa raha tha, mein to bhel puri khaa raha tha…” and “Madhuri Dixit Mili Raste Mein…”?
How about those classic Kishore Kumar songs like “Paanch rupaiya baara aana” and “Hum thi woh thi aur samah rangeen, samajh gaye naa?”. And of course, who can forget that evergreen classic “My Name is Anthony Gonsalves…”.
Sometimes I still mumble to myself, with a smile “Areh jisse meri yaad aaye jab chaahe chali aaye.. roop mahal prem nagar kholi number 420!”
Ah-hem… excuse me please… :)

Hi Tony, I live in Vancouver too…Was just reading ur profile, any TV/radio shows which you are currently working here??
The music of jaane tu… looks quite promising!
I was searching for my long time favorite Lucky Ali’s name in the credits…didn’t find him :( It’s been quite a log since he gave any new song….
Nice post….keep it up!
hmm….my name is anthony……is right there on top..
remember the line..
“he is an unsophisticated rhetorician perpetually intoxicated by his own verbosity.”
add some more like these to the list of funny songs..
chal chal re chal meri ram pyaari..( akela )
rafta rafta dekho aank meri ladi hai..
muthu kodi kawadi aada..(mehmood rocks man)
M A D mad…….
i think kishore kumar is the outright winner wen it comes to playful funny hindi songs..
p.s me also thinks he is the outright winner wen it comes to any type of song..
there is one more govinda song..don’t remember the movie..its like “Tere baap ko mein mila station pe…bola beta gharku ana chai peeku jaana”….something like that…
Then there is “Jab tak rahega samose mein aloo…tera rahunga oh meri shalu…”
then again govinda song from gambler i guess “madhuri dixit mile raste mein..khaye channe hamne saste mein..usne kaha tere sang shaadi rachau….ghar tere aake mein paarthe pakau…..madhuri ko bol diya na baba na…chahe dahej mein de muzhe sone ki car .ya aake koi dede mujhe heron ka har..shaadi ke liye mein to Kaccha hun…sau saal ka chota baccha hun…. “
Hemanth.. not working on any TV/Radio shows right now… am working on a Canadian film project, but its still “in development”… maybe I’ll post something about it soon…
Ok shoot, I messed up… for some reason I thought that “Tu Bole/Main Boloon” song was sung by Lucky Ali… now that I hear it again I think it’s actually A.R. Rahman himself… Thank you Mayur :)
What about ‘Yek chatur naar” from Padosan and “Dost kahan koi tumsa” by Manna Dey in Khamoshi…GEms aren’t they
Ashwin, of course I remember that line! Bloody classic I tell you! Gonna listen to it on my drive up today… ~ yawn ~…
Oh, and Ashwin.. you’re damn right… Kishore Kumar is the BEST… bar none… the guy himself was absolutely crazy and he was never shy to let that out… remember “C.A.T. Cat, cat maane billi…” or that song from Half-Ticket… forgot how it goes exactly but its got lines like “chhuk-chhuk-chhuk chali jaati hai rail, chhup-chhup-chhup totha maina ka mel” …that should tell you something right there…
Anand… ““Tere baap ko mein mila station pe…”… Haven’t heard that one I think, I’ll try to look it up though… and yes, Madhuri Dixit milli raste mein is awesome.. but my favorite will remain “Teri Naani maari to main kya karun, tujhko mirchi lagi to main kya karoon”… speaking of Govinda and silly songs, remember that one from Hero No.1 where he impersonates everyone from Rajesh Khanna to Dilip Kumar? Went something like this “Jo tu hoti Dimple Kapadia
Hum bhi to…Hum bhi to Kakaa hote, gori tere nainon mein hum bas jaate!”
Aditi… sorry, but I have to do this…
Kabhi Kabhi Aditi zindagi mein yunhi koi gaana bhool jaata hai…
Sorry yaar, how could one name crazy songs and leave out “Ek Chatur naar karke shingaar, mere man ke dwaar mein gussat jaat hum maraat jaat…” Wow… that scene is hilarious!
of the funny ones (other than the ones mentioned here)that I remember :
1)Main to hoon paagal from Baadshah
2)Aslam Bhai from Love ke liye(saala) kuch bhi karega
3)Aei Kya bolti tu from Ghulam
4)Kya lagthi hai from Dulhe Raja
5)Ande Ka Funda from Jodi No.1
These are on the top of my mind. I am sure there are more….
Cool… yeah those are some really good ones (though I never liked “Main to hoon pagal”).
“Aslam bhai” is awesome. “Dubai ka chashma, jean ki chhadi, aur Irani chai…”.
I think the really good ones have one thing in common.. they’re very situational… they have a context, a story within the larger narrative framework… that’s why “Aslam Bhai” and “Ek Chatur Naar” and these ones stand the test of time…
my favourite is the song which superbly demonstrates the carelessness of today’s youth… “tujhe mirchi lagi tu mein kya karu??… teri nani mari to mein kya karu??”..
hahaha amazing…
many people muz have forgotten it but another of my favourite songs is “phatela jeb sil jayenga…”
Heard this song from Mohra: Subah se lekar shaam tak, shaam se lekar subah tak…mujhe pyaar karo.ro..it goes on like this from sehar se lekar gaon tak.dhoop se lekar chaon tak…saagar ke is aar se, saagar ke us paar tak..mujhe pyaar karo….seriously impossible and funny lyrics
Noopur, yes how could we forget phatela jeb! That’s from Bombay Boys, right? It’s not only hilarious, it’s also uplifting in a quirky sort of way. “Tere bhi din aayenge pyaare acha khaasa hil jaayega!” Thanks for reminding us of this heera!
Hermetic - I remember this one comedian, forget his name, but he was doing this bit about if our filmstars would sing film songs rather than playback singers. This one, and I’ll never forget, was what if Nana Patekar sang that song from Mohra… went something like this (picture Nana ranting…)
“Subah se lekar shaam tak shaam se lekar raat tak raat se lekar phir subah tak tujhe pyaar karoonga to office kaun tera baap jaayega?!” LOL.. now THAT was fucking funny!
Have you seen Rahman/SangeetSivan/MohanLal’s Dharam Yoddha (Asokan/Yodha) ? Had one of the all time greatest MINDLESS song “Main dilli ka shezaada..” did i say funny?
Hear it to believe it!
Tony, Phatela Zeb is from Aankhein
Pavan, havent heard/seen the dubbed version, but is this the song with the frenetic tempo?
A must heard for all Rahmanis and non Rahmanis.. Courtesy one of the greatest lyricist of Rahman era “PK Mishra”
Ullu ka bhaai tu bilkul hai
tu bhi to bhainse ka bhai gadbadiya gadbadiya hai..
poora hai ullu tu, chhota sa pilla hai tu
tujhse milkar teri dulhan darkar ladkar aayi thi milne mujhko
two man fighting and rahman still find a scope for chorus :)
found it on net too…

enjoy??
Ah that’s right Pavan, it is from Aankhen. Now I remember. Saala kaam kar kar ke demaag pakh gaya yaar. I think I should tell my manager that. Speaking of which, I’d check out that song (sounds hilarious) when I get home 2nite…
I just thought of another funny hindi song.. anyone remember the parody number from Parinda? With Jackie/Anil getting talli just before Anil/Madhuri’s wedding? Fun stuff… I remember watching it and being convinced they were brothers for real (alright, take it easy guys I was like 10 years old back then…)
PS - The Javed Jaffrey rap track from Bombay Boys was a riot as well… Aane ka jaane ka peene ka kaana ka… be honest, who didn’t try to memorize all the lines in that one?
Is Opera Still Hijacking Comments? Let’s see.
tony man this is not a very good article. it has nothing in it worth reading nothing to make comment on and you give no insight or opinion or review or anything worth reading. this is big disapointment because i know you are a very good writer. but what has happened to you nowadays? where is the old tony? the writer tony who took even the crap tv serial episode and rewrite the scenes in 5 minutes and make it so much better? Even with vic the asshole producer who did not let us do any good work you still wrote such rewrote the scenes and made the crap into a good episode that people can watch. everyone knows who directed the good episodes of khwayish and all the hard work you did for chehra. vic and other guys didnt want to give you any credit they wanted all the good praises for themself but we know who contributed what. but then i think what happened to you now. Where is anjani rahon mein writer man? where is the guy who thought of concept for shekhar in matter of hours? where is the guy with all the many brilliant ideas and stories? sorry to say man now I read your articles on this site and i think your not showing your writing skills man you can do much better than this. pls dont take this wrong way u know what i mean is good and you know u are much more capable of more better writing. best of luck so that real tony khera will make a big comeback!
Tony, Ashwin…you can listen to these songs of Kishore, ( to start with …most of them are on youtube.com or esnips.com )…Nobody can even come closer to Kishore in this category. I consider this style of singing, as difficult as singing a 2 hour raagdaari. Can give more examples if you enjoy these :
Daal Kaise Gale - Baap Re Baap
Gaana Na Aaya - Miss Mary
Aaj Na Jaane Paagal Manwa - Begunah
Kismat Ki Baat Hai - Ladki
Kunvein Mein Kood Ke - Parivaar
Des Chhudaaye Bhes Chhudaaye - Chacha Zindabaad
Permit Permit - Apna Haath Jagannath
Suniye Suniye Aaj Kal Ki - Ladka Ladki
Shingh Nei Tobu Naam Taar - LukoChuri ( Bengali film - I want to do a post on this movie one day, which ran for 2.5 years in the 50’s )
