SOMETHING GOOD ON TV

SOMETHING GOOD ON TV

1. If you want to show your expensive glazed bathroom tiles without inviting anybody at your home; just get a dead cockroach in your bathroom & contact INDIA TV or any Indian news channel – I am sure that Mr. Sharma will cover your dead cockroach as “BREAKING NEWS”.

2. If you have capability to get tears without glycerin; just take part in any singing or dancing competition on any channel; I am sure you would be able to sustain for minimum 2 rounds.

3. If you are not bored with repeated watching of movies Garv-Pride & Honour, Hungamaa, Naayak, Gangaajal, Maalamal Weekly, No Entry, Sarkar….just go to Set Max, Sahara One or Zee cinema. You would get revision of your movies.

4. If you want to see designer suits, sarees, bangles, colored hairs, contact lenses, Alif Laila style editing…zapaak zapaak zapaak… deals of 1000 crores on sofas and dining tables, younger mother than daughter, only 10 pieces of white hairs on head…just check prime time of star plus, Zee, Sony or any other damn entertainment channel.

Still not satisfied? …visit ESPN, Zee sports or any other channel… take part in endless faltoo ball by ball discussion by our currently unemployed and one time Ranji / one day / one test cap holders.

In short, this is the standard of our current Indian TV entertainment. So whenever you find a little bit satisfying program; it is like water fountain in desert. Though I am not getting too much time to watch TV, but while surfing TV channels last week; I have found some programs interesting, knowledgeable and at the end entertaining.

• Saarabhai v/s Saarabhai – Star One – a true comedy series. Humorous dialogues, good acting and overall it makes you laugh at least once per episode.

• Man v/s Wild – Discovery- In each episode anchor Bear Grylls finds himself in extreme conditions of desert, mountains, jungles. How he survives from it with the help of minimum things the man could have. Narration does not make you bored by giving too much detail.

• Ganges- Discovery- If you want to feel northern eastern India atmosphere ; this is best program. Visit people, culture and villages near Ganga river from your drawing room. Our film makers should watch this; they can get so many information and stories to make movies.

• Innovations- National Geographic- something new, something innovative may be railways, bridges, houses …..happening around the world. The episode on floating houses was awesome.

• Channel – Zee Classic- if you want to see some amazing hindi films of golden era 60s and 70s then Zee classic is the best source. . It shows some good films which you have not heard about with minimum breaks. Recently I watched Heer Ranjha, Saaransh, Abodh, Balika Badhu… Last night watched Khote Sikkay.

• Benny Hill Show – Bindaas- Only for adults. But Benny Hill with his angels makes you laugh surely.

• Tom & Jerry – Cartoon Network- The five minutes laugh by these evergreen characters can make your whole day joyful.

• Now Showing- CNN IBN- Rajiv Masand satisfactorily discusses cinema, reviews, and movie recos. At least Something to gain information on cinema.

• Channel- Star Movies – from last 7-8 years, this channel has been my favourite. I like its picture quality, trailers and different kind of movies. Also not frequent repetition of movies, less breaks and more movies.

Above is not final statement. There may other programs on TV which are more entertaining and informative; but this is as per my knowledge and interests. You can add some more…

Good Post man. I havent been watching a lot of hindi channels because of non availability here… but whenever I go back home I get the same feeling…. Actually this was a refreshing post as PFC was also getting like India TV discussing No Smoking to death…. Pseudo Intellectual analysis of TZP….

Anyway to add to your list some great stuff which was on TV once:
    Mirza Ghalib
Potli wala baba (Or something like that)
    PVC (Param Veer Chakra)
    Byomkesh Bakshi
There was one amazing on Sab TV I forgot the name but it was hilarious Rakesh Bedi and Archana Puran Singh was in it…..
And there were many more which I cant remember now
But its hard to find a single one now…. I guess this has been fastest decline of Indian Television and I would give 30% if not more credit to Ekta Kapoor

btw i think its evenly balanced for every over the top melodramatic saas-bahu serial you got a brilliant piece of writing like desperate housewives ….so i think everyone has his/her fair share and can watch whatever suits them

we should have late night channels/entertainment on the telly. Its time we dealt with adult topics/issues/entertainment with maturity and not with moral policing.

  6. I finished watching ‘Six Feet Under’ last night. After 5 long but everlasting seasons I have realised that [erhaps this is the best series I have ever seen. This changes your perspective on death and mortality.

The best shows on some of the channels don get the coverage..House Md is on AXN maybe wrong channel to put it.
The Big Bang theory- on Zee – surprised to see it telecast simultaneously here as in US.
Hass ley India and SYCM on Bindass are funny, a little puerile but different.
The best show currently on air anywhere in the world IMHO has to be Dexter..god level serial.

    @rick,
The Devils’ Advocate has been at the receiving end of criticism these days because of the host Karan “The Quibbler ” Thapar , who tries to get answers he wants ( rather than the answers the guest has ) for some **sensational** topics. I think he ran into trouble with the Finance Minister Chidambaram , who remarked ” Karan , You want me to answer a question but you give me no chance at all and keep pressing your argument ” ( or something to that effect).

Big Big fan of Whose Line..! The most creatively stimulating show on television. I can never get enough of it. The musical improvisations are so fantastic! Thoroughly inspired by it, I have incorporated some of the games in my workshops and classes on Visual Communication. And Everyone loves it!

awesome that you get to watch man vs. wild there on discovery.. i was stoked when i first started watching that, until i found out he’s a bit of a faker..

i still watch it for the things i learn from the show, but in comparison, surivorman gets my respect. no camera crew.. he’s a one-man show.

it’s gotta be damn near impossible to find a person who’s watched whose line.. and can’t be a fan. ryan, colin, and wayne can just about make your day, week, month or year depending on how often you watch them. it’s a bit refreshing to have that fourth person changing from time to time, which probably depends on the season they’re in. “scenes from a hat” is easily my favorite segment.

playback, what’s the hindi ripoff called? i didn’t know it existed.. would like to see if i can find it on youtube or other places

i like the marathi serial “Shriyut Gangadhar Tipre”. The serial is actually over n its repeat telecast is going on. Every friday 10pm on Zee marathi.A middle class marathi family’s life has been wonderfully potrayed with a humurous touch. Excellent acting by all d cast especially Dilip Prabhavalkar(gandhi in Munnabhai). It is actually based on a book written by Prabhavalkar himself.

These days some gr8 progrmas like the Megastructres on Nat Geo are shown. I also like the amazing race on AXN. My whole family watches America’s Funnest Vidoes on Sab at 10:30 n goes to sleep with a smile on the face instead of watching the melodramatic ones on other channels.

“K For Kishore” – is the best thing on Indian TV right now. It is hilarious.

A few months back there was a discussion on pfc regarding who should play Kishore Kumar if a film was made on him… a lot of suggestions were.. but, i think, Amit Kumar would do a great job if…

He is a bit crazy – a nutter – but funny! How come he hasn’t acted in any films?!

And him & Sudesh Bhosle would be great for animation voice over.
