Song-struck I went in…

This post is sponsored by

It has happened to us filmis before. Many a times. Dumbstruck by a song or two we’ve walked into the CineMandir & came back cheated. It happens to me very frequently. More often than not, the culprit is the Sultan of Sell Out Films – Vishesh Films. They have the knack of grabbing their audience by their musik (usually addressed to the large number of members of the Dukhi Dil Associations (un-regd.) across India). Is it fair? May be, may be not.

Anyways, this post has originated becuz they have trapped me again. Yes again. Their latest Sell Out Film: Raaz – The Mystery Continues is in the offing. And of course they have flooded the channels with their primary bait. The anthem of ‘Dukhi Dils’ – Maahi ve. Fucking good song capturing the ‘Dukhi Dil’ or even the ‘Dil in love’. The darned net is so fucking wide, you just can’t escape. Run you can but hide you can’t. By gawd.

It began when on an ill-fated day I first saw the promo on TV. Then I googled it out. It wasn’t there online. I waited. One fine day the klouds parted & the damn song was there, ready to be downloaded & devoured. Damn, I was hooked & how! I play it on a continous loop. The song grows on me. Then indiafm has the video online too. My trouble doubles. I keep watchin’ it. Over & over again.

I change my caller tune from ‘Haule Haule’ to this one. It has taken up so much of my mind-space that my colleagues think I have lost it completely. One guy throws a mug at me & says “&^%$^^& your ear drums will burst! Headphone laga ke bhi you are disturbing the whole studio. Eff off!” Now there are some advantages of being the boss (am there almost). I can choose to inflict ‘emosanal atyachar’ without being brutally manhandled. Aah sadism.

But no, that’s not the point. What I realized is that irrespective of the budget & who stars in the film, the song / music is the first thing that grabs the audience it better be ‘fucking fantastic’ nothing less. As an aspiring film maker, I have been training my ears on songs & trying to predict what works & what doesn’t. I have had a fair success rate too! One pakka winner is the ‘judaai song’. Fuck item numbers, forget everything else, the market widens when you have The Dukhi Dil Track.

One huge example of this is TUM BIN. No stars, no cheap thrills, just one song in the soulful voice of Jagjeet saab – Koi Fariyaad. The song still retains a place of pride on my playlist. Maa kasam. Such is the power of that one song that can hange fortunes at the BO. The Bhatts have learnt this lesson ever since ‘Chitthi aayi hai’ I think. What with Pankaj Udhaas finding an international audience.

No marketing genius can outdo what this one elusive song can do. Sheer magik. There would be so many such songs that may be I missed out, but each of us filmis has that one song on the playlist that makes the heart bleed. One such favourite of mine is ‘Sajnaa aa bhi jaa’ from ‘Waisa Bhi Hota Hai II’. I heard the song somewhere & I was so fucking compelled to find the source, I discovered an all-time & any time fav movie of mine too!

Sometimes when I am walkin out of a Bhatt film disappointed, I say to myself “Yaar bas music video kyon nahi bana lete ye log? Baaki ka torture kyon? Eemran Hashmi kissing, making out… bas yaar bas.” This said, i still turned up for Jannat. I am not talking about the merits / demerits of the film. Just that song yaar. It has the power to grab people in, by the collar & morons (including yours truly) don’t get it.

Apna Pritamda has discovered this and man is he minting at the cost of the Dukhi Dil Association (DDA)… Kathor! I am sure I will find many voices at PFC who have similar stories to tell & I would be a happier man, if I do find ‘em here. No one in my immediate vicinity has an affiliation to the DDA. I feel happy for them. Atleast they don’t have to turn up for every ’sadhaaran film’ from Vishesh Films.

If & when we Insha Allah have a ‘PFC Motion Picture presents’ lets make sure that the DDA gets its due. Now how fair is that! Good movie, great music & a movie that makes truck-loads of moolah without blowing too much on marketing, thanks to that one song! Pritam da or Aennu Maaleeiik (damn whats the spelling now? blasted numerology!) please gimme that one song that makes my daru sessions worth the trouble of falling in love.

I hope Anurag’s Dev.D has that DDA dedicated song. If nothing else it certainly will add to people turning up at the B.O., for their own reasons (right /wrong). I rest my case for now guys. Till the next time then, let’s stay filmi, shall we?

      @ Magik

I am a solid member of DDA.Love Vishesh Films for the choice of songs in their movies.Almost each & every movie has a gem & whats amazing is that in most cases the entire soundtrack of the movie would be more than decent- not just a case of one song wonder. And yes I love ” Maahi Ve ” myself. The first time I heard it I was like- oh!shit how did they do it again? :) and Tum Bin is a favourite of mine- not just Koi Fariyaad- I like the others too like- “tumhare siva kuch na chahat karenge ,ki jab tak jeeyenge, mohaabat karenge”,
“choti choti raatein, lambi ho jaati hain”,
“thoda daaru vich” uff- mazaa aa gaya yeh sab padke!!!

    2. ANINDYA on December 18th, 2008 9:07 am

Before Pritam came into the scene the dukhi dil song association was led by Nadeem Sharavan.Just one song in Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke…Ghoonghat ki odh se dilbar ka was enough to get it a good opening. And then there was the dukhi dil song…Kash koi ladka mukhe pyar karta.I still remember there was a song “Sheri main ho gaya deewana” from Vijeta starring Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon.I loved it so much that I went to watch the film because of it.Obviously the film was very bad and I came home disappointed.

    3. Puneet on December 18th, 2008 1:26 pm

Just at the time it starts on WorldSpace (they play it more than 10 times a day as they are promoting it), I wish I could have courage to break the set.. so irritating the song is.. but I do manage to change the channel..

    4. Steve on December 18th, 2008 3:54 pm

      Bang on!
‘Mahi ve’ has got me big time!
I have played it around 30times since morning.

      That’s a bit….er… concerning actually!
      :-)

    5. Vikrant on December 18th, 2008 4:19 pm

Yes, I got tricked too…two of my fav songs Awarapan Banajarapan (Jism) and Maine dil se kahan(Rog)…needless to say I ended up watching both the movies.

    6. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 18th, 2008 7:09 pm

Well Vishesh movies always have great songs, but i did like Jism, Gangster and Woh Lamhe.

    7. Magik on December 18th, 2008 9:31 pm

I am so glad that I am not alone. Phew. Bring it on guys. I am sure there are more such jems!

    8. Sethumadhavan on December 18th, 2008 10:47 pm

How about the following dukhi dil songs-

      1. Acha sila diya tune ( Bewafa Sanam)
      2. Chupana bhi nahin aata ( Baazigar)
      3. Jeeye to jeeye kaise ( Saajan)

These are some of the non Vishesh film D.D songs which must be among the most popular one’s in DDA’s across the country :)

    9. Magik on December 18th, 2008 10:55 pm

      @ Sethu: Bang on!
One song I would like to mention is that Altaf Raja song in RGV’s company “Tumse kitna pyaar hai” I love it for its lyrix & the overall treatment.

Then there is Sun sun sun barsaat ki dhun (vishesh Films’ Sir)

There is another Vishesh Film I suffered called The Train. There’s a track “Dard mein bhi ye lab muskura jaate hain… beete lamhe…” goosebump material.

    10. Sethumadhavan on December 18th, 2008 11:03 pm

      @ Magik

Like all the songs mentioned by you too.In fact I think I must have seen most of the movies of Vishesh Films.Saw The Train too- only for Mithoon’s music. But BTW this was not a Vishesh Films movie- it was produced by Shyam Bajaj & Narendra Bajaj.

    11. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 18th, 2008 11:04 pm

      @ Magik

if ur speaking of DD songs, the oldies are my favorites.

      1) Dukhi Man mere(Kishore da, Funtoosh)

      2) Yaad Na Aaye( Rafi, Dil Ek Mandir)

      3) Dil Aisa Kisi Ne Thoda(Kishore da, Amanush)

      4) Na Poocho Koi Humein( Kishore da, Amanush)

      5) Badi Sooni Sooni Hai( Kishore, Mili)

      6) Ek Akela is Sheher Mein( Bhupinder, Gharonda).

And of course Mukesh, who has made a career out of Dukhi Dil songs.

Of new ones, i think Kumar Sanu specialized in those

      1) Dil Cheer ke Dekh, tera hi naam hoga( Rang)
      2) Ek Aisi Ladki Thi( Dilwale)
      of what i can recall.

    12. reet on December 18th, 2008 11:05 pm

Anybody fond of Musafir songs..? I never watched that movie but love the songs.. all versions of ‘Zindagi mein kabhi koi aaye na rabba’ and ‘Ishq Kabhi Kario Na’. I can listen to all the remixes of Rabba songs back -to -back non-stop. These songs have sadness in them.. best for the DDA catogory :) .
Songs from Zinda are equally haunting sometimes..

    13. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 18th, 2008 11:05 pm

The Train btw was a turd movie and copied from an equally turd Hollywood flick Derailed, starring Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston.

    14. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 18th, 2008 11:07 pm

Woh Lamhe had some great songs, though my favorite in it “Kya mujhe pyaar hai” is a straight lift from an Indonesian song. :) .

    15. Sethumadhavan on December 18th, 2008 11:13 pm

Actually Woh Lamhe from Zeher ( the original not the remix) was also a good D.D song.

Other D.D songs I like include

“tere bin, kaise jiya, kaise jiya, tere bin” from Bas Ek Pal and

and “juda hoke bhi, tu mujhme kahin baaki hai” from Kalyug

    16. Sethumadhavan on December 18th, 2008 11:17 pm

      @ Ratnakar

Well yes certainly the older D.D songs are evergreen & I like all the ones mentioned by you.
Yes The Train was a copy of Derailed.Even Gautam Menon copied it in tamil as Pachaikili Muthucharam with Sarath Kumar, Jyothika ,Andrea and Milind Soman ( yes) :)

    17. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 18th, 2008 11:21 pm

Yeah i saw Pachakili, while on a Singapore Airlines flight. But its changed from the Hindi version. In The Train, movie ends with Emraan catching Geeta red handed, and going back to his family. Gautam somewhat elongated it in PM, with Sarath escaping to Hyd, and then the climax fight, i guess that was done just to please Sarath’s fans.

    18. Sethumadhavan on December 18th, 2008 11:31 pm

Yes the ending was elongated & modified in Pachaikili only to please Sarath’s fans.Gautam has admitted it before the release of VA.In fact he stated that in case of VA he’s made it for himself & not done any change for anyone’s sake!!!

    19. Ashish on December 19th, 2008 12:42 am

We all have a superb collection of songs which had and will always stay with us. Lyrics are the soul of any song..and if you take the soul out of the body (Refer song here), its dead

I was a proud member of DDA few years back. And I have a huge collection of DDA songs. I cried my heart out with every single word and ended up with a comment “this song is exclusively written for me”.

The songs made me smile, cry and sometimes even nostalgic.

Just to add to your “Asadharan” songs of Vishesh Films (May not be a song for DDA)

      1. Jurm – Jab koi baat bigad jaye & Marne ke darr se mere dil, jeena na to chhor dena.

      2. Aashique – Ab tere bin, jee lenge hum (Definately a DDA)

      3. Dil Hai ke Maanta nahin – Tu pyaar hai kisi aur ka, tujhe maangta koi aur hai (DDA)

      4. Sadak – Rehne ko ghar nahin

      5. Sir – Sun sun sun barsaat ki dhun sun

      6. Fareb – oh Humsafar

      7. Dastak – Tumhe kaise main bataon, tumhe kaise main kahun.

      8. Ghulam – Ab naam muhabbat ke, ilzaam to aaya hai

      9. Sangharsh – Dil ka qaraar, Mujhe raat din, bas mujhe chahti ho.

      10. Yeh zindagi ka safar – I dont remember, but there was a DDA song which made me cry over and over again.

      11. Raaz – Apni shaadi ke din ab nahin door hai (Can somebody tell wht was tht)

      12. Kalyug – Jiya dhadak dhadak and Aadat

      13. Gangster – Ya ali

      14. Woh lamhe – Chal Chale apne ghar & Kya mujhe pyaar hai.

      15. Dhoka – Ajnabi humko kuch pata na chala

      16. Jannat – Judayee.

      and now Raaz II.

Apart frm Vishesh Films some of my favourites are

      - Kitni baaten from lakshya
      - Yaad teri aaye – Ugly aur pagli
      - Kuch kam – Dostana
      - Tanhayee – Dil Chahta hai
      - Tere liye (Sad) & Tanha hu yaara- Tere liye (Many of you wud have never heard these songs)
      - Aaoge jub tum ho saajna – Jab we met
      - Kyon kisi ko wafa ke badle wafa nahin milti – Tere Naam (Definately a DDA top)
      - Jug soona soona lage – OSO
…..so on and on and on….

A long list…as i have dumped most of thm and got a new girlfriend for me rather thn listning to those songs.

But a nice effort Magik. Tumhe there hue paani me kankar maara hai. I am sure you can make a DVD of DDA songs compiling the songs from all the comments. Dont forget to put a “thanks” note for all the PFCites.

      Cheers !!

      Ashu Bhai MAPRM Wale

    20. Sethumadhavan on December 19th, 2008 12:53 am

      @ Ashish

That was a lovely list.Whenever I’ve been out of a relationship most of these songs & many others mentioned above have kept me going.I know I’m not technically a part of DDA now, but whenever some sad moment comes along & unexpectedly I hear some of these songs- the mind goes into rewind mode automatically.kya karen, control nahin hota :)

    21. Magik on December 19th, 2008 1:06 am

Amazing list ashu bhai. u have enriched this post with this list of yours. bravo!
@ sethu: can’t agree more with you yaar… control ni honda yaar… !

    22. Ashish on December 19th, 2008 1:33 am

      @sethu:

Thanks for your nice reply. Even today, whenever i get a chance to hear these songs, memory starts rewinding. I completely agree to you.

    23. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 19th, 2008 1:45 am

BTW when ever one speaks of Dukhi Dil songs, first name that strikes my mind is Mukesh. Mukesh’s voice itself seemed to be made for such songs, and trust me i find it hard not to be affected whenever i listen. Here are some Dard-E-Dil Mukesh favorites of mine.

      1) Sabkuch Seekha Hamne(Anari)

      2) Chaand Ki Deewar Na Thodi( Vishwaas)

      3) Hum Chod Chale Hai Mehfil Ko( Ji Chahtha Hai)

      4) Jinhe Hum Bhool Na Chahe

      5) Main to Ek Khwaab Hoon( Himalay Ke God Mein)

      6) Mere Toote Hue Dile Se( Chalia)

      7) Koi Jab Tumhara Hriday Tod De( Purab Aur Paschim).

      8) Hal E Dil Hamaara, Manee Na, Bewafa Yeh Zamana, Zamaana.

    24. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 19th, 2008 1:51 am

Some Kishore Da’s Dukhi Dil Songs

      1) Hum Bewafa Hargiz Na The( Shalimar)

      2) Kuch Log Mohabbat Karke( Lava)

      3) Mere Naseeb Mein Ae Dost( Do Raaste)

      4) Kaise Kahe Hum, Pyaar Mein Humne( Sharmilee)

      5) Koi Humdum Na Raha( Jhumroo)

      6) Aaj Tu Gair Sahi( Oonce Log)

      7) Kisi Ki Bewafaai Ka

      8) Na Poocho Koi Humne( Amanush)

      And a host of others.

    25. Magik on December 19th, 2008 2:07 am

@ RS: I knew this wud be comin from you… thanks for giving me more than a dozen reasons to get sloshed tonight! Cheers!!!

      More to come…
      Hu

    28. Satyendra Jha on December 19th, 2008 2:24 am

      btw, it reminds me ofthe good old days of our school/college, whn we used to do skits in inter-school/college fests, and one of the parodies used to go like this;

Koi Jab Tumhara Yeh Sar Phod De, tadapta Hua Jab Tumhe Chhod De, Tab Tum mere Paas Aana Priy, yeh Clinic Khula hai, Khula Hi rahega, Tumhare Liye…

    29. Sethumadhavan on December 19th, 2008 2:27 am

      @ Magik

Tumne meri mooh ki baat cheen li.Getting sloshed with these songs playing in the background will be an amazing thing yaar !!!

    30. Satyendra Jha on December 19th, 2008 2:32 am

Though it may not b absolutely relevant to the topic, since albums (esp Ghazals) are a separate domain altogether, (which needs a write-up, btw, and soon…), one of the best DDA songs I have heard is that of Jagjit Singh.. Main Bhool Jaaoon Tumhe, Ab Yahi Munasib Hai…

    31. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 19th, 2008 2:32 am

satyen, na i did not but some more comming up ad hominem.

      1) Yaad na jaaye( Dil Ek Mandir)
      2) Kabhi Na Kabhi( sharaabi-Old)
      3) Din Dhal Jaaye, Kya se Kya Ho Gaya, Tere Mere Sapne( Guide)
      4) Jis dil mein pyaar na ho( dunno the movie, its a Kishore da song).
      5) Kaun Sunega, Kisko sunao( i think it was one of those Sawaan Kumar Tak’s Souten series).
      6) Tu pyaar hai kisi aur ka( Dil Hai ki maanta Nahin).
      7) Dard e Dil( from original Karz, not the one with multiple z’s).
      8) Kisi baat par mein Kisi se Khafa Hoon( Bemisaal).
      9) Dil Mein Aag Lagaayi( Alag Alag, Rajesh Khanna’s last ditch attempt to regain stardom, the movie left many distributors Dil in Aag).

      11) Kisi Patthar Ki Moorat Se(Humraaz)
      12) Chalo ik Baar Phir se( Gumraah)
      13) Koi saagar Dil ko behlata nahin( Dil Diya Dard Liya, Dilip Kumar’s attempt to do a Heathcliff in a desi version of Wuthering Heights, again had many distributors in a Dard E Dil state).

    32. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 19th, 2008 2:38 am

Dil ke Jharoke Mein( Brahmachaari)- One of the best heartbreak songs, i listened to. Loved the way SJ use the piano tunes here, to convey the emotions.

Dil ke Tukde( Dada)- Lovely number by Yesudas.

Maana ho tum( Toote Khilone)- Bappi Da used to give some real great songs, before his “Ladki Ka La Bamba” phase.

    33. Magik on December 19th, 2008 2:39 am

By gawd. I have kicked my own ass by writing this post. So many songs to listen to & gry my guts out…
@ Jha saab: u r right. it needs an exhautive write up. ghazals… filmi or otherwise. So many DDA members… aah. Am feelin’ at home!

    34. Magik on December 19th, 2008 2:41 am

Now that u mention Bappi Da… i remember his DDA song – Yaad aa raha hai tera pyaar… heartbreaker song… Bappi Da rox too!!!

    35. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 19th, 2008 2:44 am

Arre Jaado Bhai, all of us must have been through this Dard E Dil phase, sometime or other in life. And considering the recession, the number must have swelled up considerably. So unless you are Forrest Gump, you would sometime or other be emotionally affected. :)

    36. avn on December 19th, 2008 2:47 am

“Main Jahan Rahoon” from Namastey London…..and “Le Chale” from my brother Nikhil…..

    37. Satyendra Jha on December 19th, 2008 2:49 am

      Some More:
Sheesha Ho ya Dil Ho (Asha)
Kuch Log Mohabbat Karke (Kishore-da song)
Mere Dushman Tu Meri Dosti Ko Tarse (ultimate curse-your-ex-love – DDA song)
Mere Naina Saawan Bhadon (evergreen song of Kishore-da)
Jo Humne Daastaan Apni Sunaayee (Woh Kaun Thi?)
Manzilein Apni Jagah Hain .. (Sharaabi) – Amitabh at his brooding best

    38. Satyendra Jha on December 19th, 2008 2:56 am

@ Magik: the least you cn do now to give this “magikal” write-up a fitting conclusion is to compile all the songs mentioned together and put it in a separate post (as an epilogue to this one, maybe)

@ Ratnakar: Recession-clause on the DDA contract? masterstroke… And hell, no one is a Forrest Gump, so we hv all been a DDA member at least for some time in our lives. BTW, if Forrest Gump were re-made in Hindi, (produced by Vishesh Films, who else?), they wud definitely insert a DDA moment and give us one more reason to make Mallya richer…

    39. Magik on December 19th, 2008 3:00 am

@ RS: i totally agree wid recessions contribution to more DDA members. whatte insight sirjee… LOL.

@ Jha saab & others: This is a formidable list that should be fwded to the Chairman of the DDA. They could compile a DVD of all these songs. Blockbuster hit hai ji! Bhushan Kumarji… sun rahe hain aap? Wink!!!

    40. Sethumadhavan on December 19th, 2008 3:01 am

One of my all time favourite’s is Koi hota Jisko Apna from Mere Apne.I can hear the song anytime – always gives me the goosepimples :)

      Some other favourites of mine
      1. Mere naina saawan bhadon- Mehbooba
      2. Roja Jaaneman ( Roja)
      3. Dil mera churaya kyon ( Akele Hum Akele Tum)
      4. Tadap Tadap ( HDDCS)
      5. Sach keh raha hai deewana ( RHTDM)
      6. Dil de diya hai ( Masti)

Lets try to keep updating the list if possible.

      Forrest Gump by Vishesh Films????

Hey Ram,the thought itself is enough to drive me into depression forever.

      BTW Vishesh films inspirations.

      Train-Derailed
      Murder-Unfaithful
      Zeher-Out of Time
Jurm- Someone to watch Over Me
Sadak- Taxi Driver( to some extent)
      Junoon-Cat People
      Fareb-Unlawful Entry
      Ghulam- On the Waterfront
Saaya- Dragonfly( Why they choose to remake this Kevin Costner dud, is a mystery to me).
Jism-Body Heat( But loved it for Bips and Pondicherry).

    42. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 19th, 2008 3:06 am

      Ok some more

Haan Judaai se Darta Ha Dil( Kareeb)

Dil Yeh Kehta Hain( Akele Hum Akele Tum)

Dil Mera Churaya Kyon( Total lift from Last Christmas by Annu Mallik).

      Kaashi Kabhi Aisa Hota( Mohra)

Do Baate Ho Sakhte Hain( Its that Saif-Sunny-Ravs movie, forgot the name).

    43. Satyendra Jha on December 19th, 2008 3:06 am

hey, two more gems, which were perennially on our parody-list during the college-fest days:
Mera Jeevan Kora Kaagaz Kora Hi Reh Gaya..
Char Dino Ka– Badi Lambi Judaayee…

(a beer for those who can correctly guess the parody version of these two..)

    44. Magik on December 19th, 2008 3:10 am

@ Sethu: aapke mere khayaalaat bahut milte-julte hain! ‘Dil mera churaya kyon’ is the track that gave me adequate company after my very first break-up in life. Can never fogget dat one (despite aennu maaleik). Cheers!

    45. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 19th, 2008 3:12 am

      Getting on with some more

      Meri Bheegi Bheegi Si-Anamika
      Do Naino Mein-Khushboo( Gulzar version).

Bhej Qahaar Piya Ne Bhulayo-Maachis( Haunting song, and this was what turned me into a full time fan of Vishaal Bharadwaj).

Naina- Omkara, God man, the tragic tone in this just overwhelms you, VB is God.

Ru Ba Ru-Maqbool, Give it to VB, to make Daler Mehndi come up with a totally sad and soulful number. I just cud not believe it was the same Daler.

    46. Satyendra Jha on December 19th, 2008 3:14 am

@ Ratnakar: That Saif-Ravs-Sunny movie was Imtihaan, which itself was a shameless rehashed version of Humraaz.

And yes, Jhonka Hawa Ka from HDDCS is a worthy candidate for DDA club…

@ Sethu: The two lists which need to b kept updated now: FLOPIYA & DDA (Ratnakar/Magik respectively: take the lead, and give us a write-up)

    47. Sethumadhavan on December 19th, 2008 3:15 am

Recession, Bhushan Kumar, Vijay Mallya – lol

This is a superb discussion & what a co-incidence thats its happening on a friday :)

Well yes ghazals & private almbums can be left out from here- then the whole list would never get over :)

      Ok here’s another gem-

“Surimai akhiyon se nanha munha, ek sapna dekha hai” ( yeah its a lullaby , but for those who’ve seen Sadma you’ll remember the pain that Kamal Haasan is going through)-another gem from Yesudas

Also “zindagai ki safar mein guzar jaate hain ” from Aap ki kasam.

And how about this one -

“kya hua tera waada ” from Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin!

    48. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 19th, 2008 3:15 am

There is also a lovely song from Pinjar, where the singer laments her fate, that she was born as a woman. Any one remember it.

And Pinjar also had another heart breaking song “Watana We”, dealing with the pain of seeing one’s land divided.

    49. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 19th, 2008 3:20 am

Satyen, in fact i felt Tadap Tadap Ke Is Dil from HDDCS was more tragic.

      Yeh Dil Deewana- Pardes

      Rang Aur Noor Ki Baarat-Ghazal

Humne Dekhe In Aankhon Mein-Khamoshi( the Dharam-Waheeda-Rajesh Khanna version).

Zindagi Ka Safar- Safar( Just gives me the goose bumps).

Zubaan Pe Dard Bhari daastan Chali Aaye- Maryada

    50. Sethumadhavan on December 19th, 2008 3:20 am

      @ Jha

Yes both the lists need to be updated pronto. So Ratnakar & Magik pls do it.

      @ Magik

Dil mera churya kyon – was a classic for people like me & you those days I guess :)

      Some more:
Mere Naseeb mein Aei Dost (Do raaste)
      Khush Rahe Tu Sada (Khilona)

      Aawarapan-Banzarapan (Jism)

    52. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 19th, 2008 3:23 am

Chingari Koi Bhadke- Amar Prem( one of the most heart breaking songs i heard).

Kya Janoo, Main Hoon Kaun- Bande Haath( First time AB did a double role in his career).

Kahan Se Aayi Bhadra-Chashme Budoor( Masterpiece of a Song).

    53. Satyendra Jha on December 19th, 2008 3:28 am

@ Ratnakar: Was it Charkha Chalati Maa from Pinjar u r talking abt?

      another gem:
Kiska Rasta Dekhe (Joshila – Dev A.)

    54. Magik on December 19th, 2008 3:32 am

Sach mere yaar hai (Sagar) Kamal Haasan’s act in dat song… made me cry buckets.

    55. Satyendra Jha on December 19th, 2008 3:36 am

      some more:
Toote Hue Khwabon Ne. (rafi, cant rem the movie-name)
Jaane Kya Soch Kar Nahi Guzra (Kinara – Gulzar)
Hum Bekhudi Mein Khud Ko Pukare Chale Gaye.. (Hum Dono – old one with Dev A.)
      Kya Khabar Kya Pata (Saheb)

    56. Sethumadhavan on December 19th, 2008 3:38 am

OMG I swear these songs are all simply superb.

      Here’s some more-

yeh jo mohabbat hai ( Kati Patang)
kahin door jab din dhal jaaye ( Anand)
      Mujhse juda hokar (HAHK)

Yaad Aa rahi hai ( Love Story)
      Lambi judaai ( Hero)

How can I forget Rozaana – Nishabd ( superb)

    58. Satyendra Jha on December 19th, 2008 3:55 am

@ Sethu: Lambi Judaai (Hero) was mentioned by me earlier, and it has a reward for a beer on its head, check out my earlier post (# 43).

      Some more gems:
Rula Ke Gaya Sapna Mera (Jewel Thief) – the intention was fake, the impact.. genuine

Na Tum bewafa Ho.. (Lata haunts)

O Babul Pyare (Johny Mera Naam) – though the object of longing was not a hardcore DDA stuff, its extremely effective nonetheless

Nafrat Ki Duniya Ko Chhodkar (Haathi Mere Saathi) – Again, the object was not a human being, but its like bringing all of us back to humanity…

    59. Sethumadhavan on December 19th, 2008 3:59 am

O Saathi Re ( Muqddar ka sikandar)
tujhe yaad na meri aaye ( KKHH)
tune sathi paaya apna ( Appu Raja)

    60. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 19th, 2008 4:34 am

      @ Satyen-55

Toote Hue Khwabon Mein was from Madhumati

and Hum Bekhudi Mein was from Kaala Paani, but not sure if that comes under a Dard E Dil song.

Aate Hain Chale Jaate Hain- Yaadgaar

Sheeshe Ke Gharon Mein- Sanam Teri Kasam.

      Bhuuli Hui Yaadon-Sanjog(Old)

      yeh Duniya Yeh Mehfil-Heer Ranjha

    61. reet on December 19th, 2008 4:35 am

‘Karoge Yaad To Har Baat Yaad Aayegi…’ (Bazaar)
It’s the baap of all DDA songs.. for all those people who feel the pain of lost love

    62. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 19th, 2008 4:36 am

Dil Jo Na Keh Saka- Bheegi Raat

Yaa Dil ki Suno Duniya Waalo-Anupama( Haunting)

Jaane Woh Kaise Log The-Pyaasa( a real heartbreaker of a song).

Jinhe Naaz Hind Par-Pyaasa( Dada uses a totally minimalistic soundtrack here, just a consistent note going on).

    63. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 19th, 2008 4:38 am

      Reet-61

Bazaar reminds me of that Lata solo, Dikhaye Diye Yun, just mind blowing.

    64. Sethumadhavan on December 19th, 2008 4:40 am

      @ Jha & Ratnakar

I am going off topic but cant help it.talking about the flop list- Indra Kumar’s upcoming film is called Daddy Cool & the star cast is- Sunil Shetty, Ashish Chowdhary, Javed Jaffrey, Aftab Shivdasani, Kim Sharma & Sophie Chowdhary.Except Javed Jaffrey all are members of our Flopiya list
      :)

    65. Sethumadhavan on December 19th, 2008 4:42 am

      Sorry I meant flopiya list!!!

    66. Ratnakar Sadasyula on December 19th, 2008 4:48 am

Sethu thats nothing, sometime back u had a desi movie called FIGHT CLUB and guess its starcast-

Zayed Khan, Ashish Choudhury, Dino Morea, Sunil Shetty, Rahul Dev, Amrita Arora, Dia Mirza, Sohail Khan- movie should have been called FLOP CLUB.

BTW no resemblance to that Brad Pitt-Ed Norton starrer.

    69. Satyendra Jha on December 19th, 2008 5:25 am

@ Sethu / Ratnakar: hey, this Indra Kumar movie looks ‘promising’. Must keep a tab of it. and yes, it also reminds me of another hot topic of discussion, SOF. Indra Kumar should qualify, what say?

ever since started on this post, been humming all these DDA songs, esp the old ones, and sure need to gulp it down with a peg or two tonight… and remember the club-membership days…

    70. avn on December 19th, 2008 5:31 am

      Ratnakar-48
Thats got to be either “Charkha Chalati Maa”, or “Aj Akhan Waris Shah nu….”
If its the latter, Amrita Pritam got the Sahitya Akademi Award for it…..
BTW, does someone remember “Khoobsoorat hai wo Itna” from Rog? There is a very similar song by Udit Narayan (and music by M.M. Kareem I’m sure). I hope someone has an idea what I am talking about….

hi magik nice post, got a lot of memories on songs splly from Mahesh Bhatt’s sadak and Naam. Frankly i saw these movies many times just for songs. I still rem that i had bought the cassette of Sadak which had mention with a line called “with jhankar beats” :) . I still have the cassette :)

my fav in DDA are :

      1) zihale muskin from gulami – amazing song with beautiful lyrics from gulzar
      2) darpan ko dekha
      3) songs from phir teri kahani yaad aayi – is movie main gaane ke alawa kuch nahin tha actually
      4) Songs of ashiqui
      5) Aaj kal yaad kuch aur rehtha nahin – Mohammed Aziz’s song from Nagina

Aur bhi soch ke batata hoon :)

Avn/Satyen: Yeah i think its Charka Chalati Maa, coz i remember listening to the song, while driving once.

      Mere Dushman Mere Bhai-Border

Ae Jaate Hue Lamhon- Border, wonderfully depicts the dilemma of a newly married officer who has to leave his bride.

Ek Aur Saathi Tha- LOC. Very touching and moving.

Hoke Majboor- Haqeeqat. God this song just moves me like anything.

Kar Chale Hum Fida-Haqeeqat. The best tribute to the Indian soldier. BTW in recent Mumbai Meri Jaan, Kay Kay makes a snide remark about Muslims, saying that they listen only to Rafi and not Kishore Kumar. And the song on radio,in background is this one.

Ek Akela Is Sheher Mein(Gharonda)- Just haunting, the lyrics by Gulzar wonderfuly capture the feelings of loneliness in the city.

      “Is Ajnabi ke Sheher Mein,
      Jaana Pehchaana Dhoondta Hain”

Jaane Waalo Zara(Dosti)- Another song that just haunts me, especially “Ek Insaan Hoon, Main tumhari Tarah”.

Yes Indra Kumar is definitely an SOF.With Masti,Dhamaal & now Daddy Cool- he’s trying hard to act “cool” himself.

      @ Ratnakar

I love Ek akela is sheher mein from gharonda.
I remember as a kid going to my dad & asking
” yeh abodaana kya hota hai” ?

whats amazing about the song apart from Bhupendra of course is that Bombay ( as it was known then) was brilliantly captured. The same song was conveyed differently when the lead pair was in love & were happy- do diwane sheher mein.Brilliant technique here used by the music director-Jaidev here!!!

Dard bharey geeton ki charcha aur Dard ke badshah ka zikr nahin?

      The sublime Talat Mehmood in

      Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Phir mujhey deeda-e-tar yaad aaya (Mirza Ghalib)
Ae mere dil kahin aur chal
      Andhey jahan ke andhey raastey
Pyar par bas to nahin hai mera
Itna na mujhse tu pyar badha
Dil-e-nadaan tujhe hua kya hai (Mirza Ghalib)

    85. Dewi on December 20th, 2008 1:41 pm

Oh, and there’s more. The gorgeous poetry of Makhdoom Mohiuddin in “Gaman” set to music by Jaidev (I believe)

Seene mein jalan ankhon mein toofan (Suresh Wadkar)
Raat bhar aapki yaad aati rahi (Chhaya Ganguly)

And one written by Shahryar in “Umrao Jaan”

Zindagi jab bhi teri bazm mein (sung by Talat Aziz) with the lines

Har mulaqaat ka anjaam judai kyon hai
Ab to har waqt yahi baat sataati hai hamein

    86. Steve on December 21st, 2008 2:16 pm

The title song from Inder Kumar’s ‘Ishq’ is a proper rona dhona number!

‘Main yahan tu wahan’ from ‘BAGHBAN’.

‘Aashiqui ek raat ki’ from ‘PAAP KI AANDHI’.

      ‘Bandh hoton se’ from ‘SIR’.

      ‘Kuch na kaho’ from ‘1942′.
I know it’s meant to be romantic, but i find it a bit sentimental..

‘Chithee na koi sandes’ from ‘DUSHMAN’.
I can’t handle this at all.
      Too painful.

‘Ek woh din’ from ‘Chachi 420′.

    87. prasen on March 20th, 2009 5:10 am

There is one song my all time fav. Not a filmi song though
