SORRY BHAI !-FORBIDDEN LOVE

FORBIDDEN LOVE
28th Oct 2008
Here I am sitting in my living room, the Diwali crackers making a lot of noise outside( I thought there was recession) and I realise I am exactly one month away from the release of my film “SORRY BHAI!” . By now the verdict would be out- the third Friday in four years that will navigate the course of my life till another such Friday.

Maybe it’s time to talk a little about what the film is all about. Harsh ( Sanjay Suri) is an investment banker working in Mauritius. He invites his family to come over to Mauritius to attend his wedding to Aaliyah (Chitrangda Singh). Mom (Shabana Azmi), Dad ( Boman Irani ) and younger brother Sid(Sharman Joshi) come to Mauritius. Over the next few days Aly and Sid realise that they are attracted towards each other…. this is the basic premise of the film.

While shooting this film I was constantly reminded of My Brother Nikhil: This was the second film after MBN where Sanjay And I were handling the production.; Subha my first AD from MBN was working on the film as the script supervisor; Five characters; A family; Forbidden love; the sea; the music; the staying together at an outdoor shoot… the bonding. The difference being MBN was filled with moments of tears and SB was filled with moments with smiles.

While shooting I realised that I was slowly developing a certain style. Actually Subha pointed it out. How the sea forms a backdrop very often. I think somehow the water body fascinates me and hence there in all my film.

I was anxious as I was stepping into a new genre. That of a fun romance…. but at the same time dealing with something that’s not so easily accepted. But this aspect of venturing into “forbidden” territory is what gives me my identity. I could not have made a straight forward love story. What made the script exciting for me is that here are no villains…. its talking about people like you and me…. and a situation happens and how they deal with it without losing their dignity. The fact that both the brothers are essentially nice people made it more difficult for Aaliyah to make her choice..
I cannot imagine anyone else having played the role of Aaliyah(the mysterious one) with as much beauty and dignity as Chitrangda has. Many a time I tell myself what a loss it has been that she was away, and am so fortunate that she choose my film to come back. She too was worried about how the character would be perceived; It is after all someone walking the thin line. I think that is what also attracted Chitrangda about Aaliyah. Let me quote her here from what she wrote to me about her character – “There are many facets to this character which makes her very real….a woman who apparently looks emotional and vulnerable actually comes out being the one who makes the toughest choice….”

Much of the ease created in the sets was thanks to BOMAN . He filled the set like he does the film with warmth and love. For me it was most difficult to get him as he was super busy. But I knew it had to be him… Let BOMAN speak … I will leave you with BOMAN’s words…. the man is so eloquent and I thought it might be fun for everyone to see from his point of view…. something probably one won’t hear in interviews

“Clint Eastwood was the ‘man with no name’ in all his spaghetti westerns, and in SORRY BHAI! I have the pleasure of having that honour. Having read the script, I call up Onir, and asked, ‘But what’s the name of my character Onir?’ Pop comes the reply. He said the name is ‘POP’. That’s it? POP? In a script with wonderful characters, a refreshingly rare love triangle, an honest and talented director and a wonderful cast, the best that was being served up for me was ‘POP’?! Unlike the tobacco chewing Eastwood, Pop keeps getting chewed up by his wife Gayatri played by the redoubtable Shabana Azmi. It is a strange yet deep love affair between Gayatri and Pop in which I cannot recollect a single line of endearment or love. Fine relationship writing needs no words to depict love, and in this case there are none. The couple doing just the opposite by not missing out on a single opportunity to taunt, bicker, barb and pot shot at each other. Gayatri winning every round. Well, every round save one.
To be honest, when I read the script, Pop, seemed an inadequate role for me to undertake. Even if I did discount the absence of a name for my character. Then I was commandeered to read it again. ‘READ IT AGAIN!!!’ she said. ‘And stop reading it just as POP, but as POP and MOM!!’ That did it. She won that off screen round too. Thank you Shabana. Thanks to that short phone call, I did SORRY BHAI!. I have to confess it was a real pleasure and an honour playing POP!!! and MOM!”

…. BOMAN IRANI

its a sad fact that most of the so called rom-coms or ‘breezy-romances’ or love stories of recent times are busy selling something ‘extra ordinary’ or ‘larger than life’ … loud music ..melodramatic scenes … loud mouthed punjabi (typical isnt it ?) characters …etc etc etc

whatever happened to small …slice of life love stories like basu chatterjee’s choti si baat …or a genuine honest story like socha na tha …

what we dont realise that most of the times …’simple films’ like these are better than typical hindi filmy romantic films …

waiting for the music to release and the film to hit the theaters

onir bhai – one request..pls market the film aggressively.. the “comeback film of chitragandha singh” bhi chalega … but pls pls pls do market the film well …would want as many people possible to watch this film

I refrain from calling my film a romantic comedy… because here the connotations the minute you use the word comedy is “LOUD”. SB is a gentle/real film that leaves you with a smile

  13. Onir, i really loved ur My Brother Nikhil, and i am looking 4 to SB. Sanjay Suri, i feel is one of the more underrated actors in the industry and he needs to be given his due. And i do like these sweet n simple stories. And if not for nothing, i am just gonna see ur movie for Boman-Shabana, their jodi is one of the best for sure. All the best for ur movie Onir, and i hope it does well.

On a side note, considering investment banks have been crashing all around, is it a good idea to have the hero as an investment banker ;). Just a thought, nothing serious Sir, ;).

four tracks are by a new music director by the name Gaurav Dayal. Vivek Philip has done the title track and the background.
By the way “Le Chalein” is supposed to be the all time favourite song of Sunidhi too. We met while he was studying at Pune FTII. he and Pritam( whose first two albums I produced before he got into films) were students of sound Design. My sister Irene was an editing student and while visiting her I met them…. also met Amitabh Varma( my lyricist) there, he was an editing student…. and of course Sachin my DOP. so we all come a long way… more then ten years of knowing each other.

@Onir..you know, water has in the past provided many a backdrop to enduring love stories, breezy romances and poignant endings..remember that (I know you always will) vacant look into the camera with the sea and the home as a backdrop by Victor B when he is speaking about Nikhil..water is malleable, is serene yet sometimes dark and mysterious. It does go hand in hand with layered stories such as yours..stories where much is left unsaid..moments make the film..beutiful ditties, cool scenes that are set up solely to speak about the milieu!
Expecting all of this again from you.
Then Boman, Boman is God! An actor is someone who can tell you with a twitch of his elbow as to what is his emotion. In “My Wife’s Murder” he showed menace while eating Biryani. In Munnabhai 2 he did that by sctraching his beard. In LAKSHYA he was a concerned parent by sitting still. In Honeymoon Travels, he emoted with wavy hair and Goan lingo! In Khosla ka Ghosla, he twitched his left leg to show his “Punjabiyat”! So, as POP he shall come up with something as ‘eye popping’ as ever!!
I sincerely believe that you have a winner at hand..just promote it whole heartedly..speak to every idiotic journo very positively..Indians rely a lot on hearsay..what to do!!

    @Onir,
Interesting story. One Woman, two brothers, will not bother audience at that level where Chitrangda and you should worry how audience would react on Aaliya’s character. Since the days of Sabrina this angle has been giving us some interesting films.
Your story brings interesting take as your Aaliya is already going to marry the elder brother and younger brother comes into the picture just before the marriage.
Waiting period is filled with curiosity to see the journey of emotional feelings of the characters and how this conflict is ended.
and Boman and Shabana Ji’s inclusion in this scenario makes the film more interesting. They both are very fine actors and I am almost certain that rest of the three younger actors might have struggled a lot to match the performances of these two actors. They can do something only with the movements of their eyes without speaking any dialogue.
    Thanks for sharing Boman’s writings.

    —-
Somewhere Chitrangda’s way of looking reminds me of Dimple Kapadia. These women would move lower side of their eyes upwards and this move shrinks their eyes a bit. Earlier Nargis and Mumtaz and later Natasha Sinha also had this habit.
HKA has already established her individuality as an actor and It will be nice to see her playing a character very different from her first film HKA, where she had to be more on realistic side.
Curious to see this thing also how scenes between Shraman Joshi and Chitrangda appear, does he play younger character than Aaliya also in the story? Does he match as a man before her as she does not look like a girl but a beautiful woman while Shramn, till now has been playing boyish characters, so naturally it should be a challenge for him to match screen presence of a woman with his boyish looks if he is also playing a man and his on screen behaviour will decide this.
These and few other curiosities (and these are curiosities to see in the film and not questions to be answered now) are there with which my eyes and mind will face your film?
    —-
Thanks for sharing Beautiful pics also. All in white dresses with white clouds in blue sky! Hope its there to fulfil some of your vision in a scene of the film.
    All the best.

@Indranil…. that was a a beautiful observation, i mean Victor and the sea. you know like MBN/ even some scenes in BEP, here characters at times look out into the sea and talk…. and you can see in their eyes emotions. One of my favourie scenes has Shabana and Chitrangda looking out into the sea and speaking…. has a very strange feel.
And Yes Boman has something special in this film. the way the father son bond is definately special.

Of course once the casting is done one rewrites a few things to suit the person. though that was one thing we did not have to do with her. She was perfect for the role.

@Gajendra. we used a lot of white in the film as it was summer, beach and warm. so we continued the same theme for the poster designs. it gives a very warm, holiday beach film feel … which it is.

    Hey Onir,

In the earlier reply u had mentioned that Ashwini Malik has written the story. As a film student, wanted to know how difficult/easy it is to direct a film written by someone else?

  82. onir onir says:

@Shreyansh… well I had written my first two films but always colaborated and bounced the scripts with others . so am kind of open to changes and suggestion. Also since our sensibilities matched it was not difficult. but one has to make an extra effort to try and understand how the writer see’s the film. I interacted a lot and at times changed the way I was looking at a scene after i spoke to him. for any major changes during shoot. I would always call up my writer and consult him.

    Onir,
Very well explained, but i think understanding the writer’s perspective is easier said than done. I once saw Cappola’s interview in which he explained how difficult it was to understand Mario Puzo’s understanding of the characters.

and since i think our sensibilities match, can i ask you some questions related to film, outside the context of “Sorry Bhai?”

    Hi Onir

For a story like this, I would think that the director and writer would need deep insight into the individual characters. Did you and your writer discuss backstories of each of the characters? Can you share your thoughts on events which might have shaped the lives of your characters which are not shown in the movie…?

    @SULAKSHANA… thanks
@Dazedandconfused….Yes we discussed the back stories/hobbies/ likes and dislikes of each character to try and have an insight into why they act a certain way, or small gestures.

for example: The character of Aaliyah…. one sees her as modern, strong character and yet not being able to take some steps in life easily. we thought maybe she is from a broken family, someone who has grown up in boarding school. never had a proper home. so she kind of idealises marriage and home and goes all out to try and make things work even when she has a strong feeliing that things are not right.

Most of the backstories are used in the film… for example she was a film student, love music and literature…. these things are used in a subtle manner all through out the film to give her character more depth/layers…

we did similar excercise with all the characters which perhaps will be more fun to talk about after the release

Onir ji, i’m sure you’ve heard this a million times, but this Mithoon guy, who composed for u previously, is amazing!

The ‘Tere Bin’ and ‘Bas Ek Pal’ track are work of a genius!

Even in ‘Anwar’ he gave music so sublime!

May I ask how u came across him?
And most importantly, why haven’t u used him again??

I was hoping he would score for ‘Sorry Bhai’ too.

Well Various Music directors play to me their music composition. Thats how I had come across Mithoon as he knew a friend of mine. Love his music the first time I heard. I think after BEP he did the music of TRAIN and AGGAR….. he is busy making his own album. the reason for his not composing for this film is that he s busy with his album, and i think Gaurav is more apt for this film. Moreober Mithoo has certain obligations with a music company and i do not like to work under pre conditions
