Sorry Bhai Teaser and PFCOne Winner’s Experience

Safat Ali, from Rajasthan, had blown us away with his one minute movies he had submitted last year to PFCOne 2007. He won the Silver Minute award for his hard work. So when we approached him with our list of awards to choose from, we did not realize that he was a big fan of Onir’s work. From the entire range of internships with writers and directors that we offered him, he was quick to choose Onir’s next project.

The next project was ‘Sorry Bhai‘. Since Onir was busy and was a bit let down by the crap and vitriol of some commenters on his blog, he decided to take a break (from blogging about the movie)

So, our next bet was to ask Safat Ali on his experience of working with Onir and Sorry Bhai. Graciously Safat sent us his account mustering enough courage to write his experience in whatever English he could manage. I was deeply touched by his gesture and decided to wait for the right time to publish his tale. Today Sorry Bhai’s first promo has been released and for PFC, it is a pleasure to publish PFCOne winner’s experience before moving to the promo… Oh and like last year, Safat’s entry in this year’s PFCOne had us stunned!

Safat Ali’s email to PFC

Dear pfc editorial team,

PFC had given me four options after winning the PFCOne silver minute award. I chose Onir, bcoz i liked his film MBN (My Brother Nikhil) . He is a very simple film maker that’s why i liked him. My intership was of 15 days but after we met he said there’s no time condition any more (for the internship).

I had joined the film crew of Sorry Bhai a month before the shooting took off. The work was done at Onir’s house which was also our work place as a office. There was two female assistant directors of Onir with whom i was assigned work. But sadly (and this is perhaps my fault) I felt a bit uncomfortable working with them. I was frustrated after sometime too, as I wasn’t learning anything new. But because of Onir and Sanjay Suri (the producer & actor), I kept moving on the project - because as a person both Onir and Sanjay Suri are such good people at hear and I tremendously enjoyed their company…

I mean some in this field are exceptionally good but on contrary some are very bad. Thus it was only because of Onir that I stayed there. I think that if you want to learn, you will one way or the other. I saw how the complete work is done on paper than how is it transforms into reality by shooting.

In India there was only five days schedule of the film, and the whole film had to be shooted in mauritius. That was my great expereince not about just the making of the film but many other small things which i used to think about making a film. The main characters of the filmlike shabana azami, boman, sanay suri, sharman and chitrangdha - all whom i loved so much and spent a good amount of time with.

The schedule for shooting parts of the film of mauritius was for about one month, where I flew to with the rest of the unit, though unfortunately i had to return due to some urgent work and had to cancel my stint with the unit. That was my bad luck.

During those shooting days i want to share one funny - event there was the scene of a limozine car in which boman, sanjay suri and sharman go to some where but when the car came, Onir did not like the driver who was short in height, as he did not fall perfectly in the frame for the shoot. Onir looked at me willingly, but he could not ask me, having some hesitation he thought i will feel bad to do this role. Then someone came to me and said something like “you are six feet, having long hair and pony…onir wants this type of driver” i said ok i have no objections i did not come here to become an actor so it absolutely does not matter what role i get .( or perhaps I’ve destroyed my career to do drivers’ roles ..ha..ha…ha..) But i had great fun i enjoyed that.

Today too, i am in contact with Onir. He is great person and very cool i never saw him in short temper or irritating at shoot.

That is one of the things that i learned - that having cool head, leads to a great working environment with the rest of the unit and ultimately to a great product… thanks once again PFC

loved the trailer, nice and fun.
glad to see Onir coming out of that BEP mode, this looks much more closer to MBN than BEP.
looking forward to it…aab baas release date mil jaaye :)

  2. ravptor on October 25th, 2008 8:15 pm

Doesn’t the title look a little odd.

First guess of the story, both are bros, she is one’s wife, the other get’s her in the end, he says - “Sorry bhai” to the other!

    Or

Both are friends and treat each other like bro’s. She is one’s wife, the other gets her - he says “sorry bhai”

    Sorry Onir, just humoring myself.

  3. DPac on October 25th, 2008 8:40 pm

and are you implying theres something wrong with both scenarios ravp? :-)

  4. ravptor on October 25th, 2008 8:47 pm

    yes DPAC… u c, I came up with those scenario’s!

Anyways, any dope on what the story is… hope it’s not between DCh and Rock-On

  5. Arthi V on October 25th, 2008 8:50 pm

I thot its a remake of While You Were Sleeping. The basic premise tho, liking one guy, falling for his younger bro.

  6. DPac on October 25th, 2008 8:59 pm

:-) so what if u came up with those scenarios?
Onir came up with the movie first ehehe

    No mate..
from that Chitrangada Interview all i can guess is theres 2 or even 3 guys involved and some sleeping around eheh

with shabana and boman in the backdrop i was thinking honeymoon travails.. where did u get Rock on and DCH?

  7. Vishal Chalchitra on October 26th, 2008 4:27 am

    its Dan In Real Life

  8. kcp on October 26th, 2008 4:37 am

I had read the gist of the story somewhere in Movie or Filmfare magazine. Will try to dig it out ;)

  9. Jateen on October 26th, 2008 8:44 am

Congratulations to Onir and Safat and good luck. Promo looks good, especially that first scene on the boat where Sharma and Sanjay sit at the same place, while the other one is with Chitrangada. Hmmmm!

  10. Onir on October 26th, 2008 10:33 am

    Hi all
just want to clarify one thing. I did not take a break from PFC because comments upset me. I had started blogging here because i wanted comments and like to be able to react to both positive and negative comments. I stopped because whenever i had a query to the PFC admin i received no answer and I think it was becoming too one sided. What saddens me is that no one bothered to get in touch with me from the team to get to know about the film or why I was not writing. It was just assumed that i did not like some comments. that absolutely UNTRUE.
Thanks Safat for the warm piece. You have been special, and will keep in touch. Am glad if the experience was enriching…..

  11. Onir on October 26th, 2008 10:57 am

    hey Vishal
Want you to know that Dan’s … whatever was released in Aug 2007. My script registered in 2005 and Shabana Azmi confirmed April 2007. After i found this out I have not bothered to see the film and if there are similarities … I am not bothered. After all every other film is a triangle and will have certain common elements. If it was inspired from anything i would not have hesitated to admit it.

  12. Onir on October 26th, 2008 10:58 am

    @rusted Rick
The release date is 28th nov

  13. Onir on October 26th, 2008 10:59 am

    hey Ravptor
You are pretty close. Its just that there is no wife. Its the bride to be.

  14. ravptor on October 26th, 2008 11:25 am

Hey Onir… welcome back man… glad the film’s done… wish you all the success.

In all honesty, I or for that matter no one should really care if there is a previous film like it… all it matters is you made it and it stars some of the best talent available so it should be fun.

Write more if you get time… keep em’ coming!

  15. Onir on October 26th, 2008 11:36 am

    :) thanks Ravptor.

  25. Rk on October 27th, 2008 6:07 am

All the Best for your new film Onir.
Its long time since you wrote anything on PFC. So please make us informed more about your new film.
Many of us were feeling your absence but at same time we were unable to do something about it.

When a filmmaker or any artist is busy in creating his work and its known to all then its a stage where many people feel a hitch to contact the artist on their own as they always suffer with this hitch that their efforts may disturb him and his creation’s progress.
We were waiting that once your shooting is finished, you will start writing about the film.

But anyway, this is not time to give water to any kind of misunderstanding as this is the time to promote the film with full force.

Waiting for your “simple and direct from the heart” Post on the “Sorry Bhai” or its making.

Many people’s curiosity you can understand, you have brough back someone to propel their hazaron khwahishen aisee ya waisee.

    Best of Luck.

  26. Onir on October 27th, 2008 9:44 am

@Indraneel…. now u are making me guilty for having been away:). that song is a song called “jalte hain chalte hain sang sang mere…. khamoshi aahein andhere…” sung by KK, composed by new music dir Gaurav Dayal and written by Amitabh Varma… who has written songs for all my films. Its my favourite song in he film:)

  27. Onir on October 27th, 2008 9:51 am

    @kARTIK Bhai… thank you
    promise to write soon.
@R.K…. thanks for your warm message. I do not know if u believe me but for me its not so much “promote” the film that I am here. I just like talking about my work, my strength and weakness in this site. I missed it too. But maybe an artist ( who is pretty lonely in his space) needs to be remembered. anyway am not so stupid to let this be the reason to disappear. I will make time and write about this film in he next few days; and thank you for making me feel so welcome.

  28. striker on October 27th, 2008 10:02 am

onir, welcome back, and congrats on the upcoming release.. needless to say, looking forward to it. maybe it’s just me, but the music had a hint of similarity to “le chale” from MBN.. which is weird considering that the music in both films is from different people. what kind of ideas did you have for the music and how did you choose gaurav dayal for the film?

  29. Anand Kadam on October 27th, 2008 10:07 am

best of luck Onir ..i am sure sorry bhai is gonna rock…i have a rather stupid question….who came up with the name sorry bhai ? was it you or someone else ?

  30. Onir on October 27th, 2008 10:09 am

@striker…. actually the whole shooting experience somehow reminded me of MBN. The song is a very different melody but the emotions are are in similar plane. also kk too sang le chalein….. maybe its not wierd because they are from two diff people but made for the same ear :).
for me the criteria of choosing a song is that i can hum it the next day after hearing it once.(first i brief the music dir about the situation and content of lyrics) i need to carry the melody with me. when u listen to the music in the film you will realise that there is a common element in terms of the sound.
I loved the demos that Gaurav played…. I anyway prefer working with new ppl and since I could connect to his tunes I decided to have him on…. i like his music so much that he is also doing the songs of Kill Chhabra…. another project that I am producing.

  31. Onir on October 27th, 2008 10:13 am

@Ananad Kadam…. Thanks…. well the first name was “MY BROTHERS BRIDE” we realised it sounded too much like MBN…. and the name “SORRY BHAI!” came up in a discussion between me and my writer Ashwini Malik. we instantly liked it because it is derived from the dialogue of the film.

  32. ANINDYA on October 27th, 2008 10:22 am

Hey Onir loved your MBN.Really looking forward to this one.And well you have done a great job by bringing back Chitrangada Singh. We really need actresses like her today…

  33. Onir on October 27th, 2008 10:26 am

    @Anindya
Thanks… and yes the industry will surely have a beautiful and stunning performer. am so glad she was my Aaliyah

  34. OM on October 27th, 2008 11:37 am

Onir Bhai..welcome sir..Nice to see you back…Eagerly waiting for Sorry Bhai..hope all the team achieve great sucess with this film and Sanjay Suri get well deserved recognition, good luck :-)

  35. Onir on October 28th, 2008 3:09 am

    Thank you OM.

  36. superdabba on October 28th, 2008 4:39 am

I hope the film is good and does well. I hope sharman crosses into leading roles and Sanjay suri gets good roles. I hope it becomes a big hit so that people knock on your door with money for your next film. I hope you produce films even when not directing.
    Good luck onir.

  37. indraneel on October 28th, 2008 6:59 am

@Onir..keep that good ear for music going…even Mithun did well for BEP..I am looking forward to Gaurav’s work here..the KK song is fabulous as I mentioned..I am buying the CD as it comes out..the drive from Navi Mumbai to Mahalaxmi shall not be monotonous in the coming weeks..
    Kill Chabbra..thats an interesting title..

  38. Rk on October 28th, 2008 7:00 am

    @Onir (27),
Ya perhaps “Promote” word look like associated with the post-production commerce of the film. But I had used it in a different way. Its coming out from the member of the PFC Family and members of PFC family should know about its making etc. As you said that you like to interact with the readers and as always it will be again a thrilling experience for the readers to know something about the making of the film. If more and more people know about the film before its release then its a good thing as many audience may want to watch this film but because they are not aware of the film, they may go for another film which has got bumper marketing. So why not to fulfil all the purposes of PFC and being on PFC.
after the film is watched by the audience, interaction will bring in so many interesting points. Audeince may not be able to say about choice of the lense but they certainly can say why a certain scene did not work for them on emotional or logical or philosophical level.
As you always take part in discussion on your post so there is a selfish desire also to see soon this happening again.
May you get free time soon to start this process of interaction via your new film.
    All the best again.

  50. Vasanbala on October 31st, 2008 11:06 am

Song reminds me of Rabbi’s song BALLO from his latest album

  51. Honhaar Goonda on October 31st, 2008 3:56 pm

Vekh lai Jar Lai Ihnu Khirkhe Mathley…

  52. Gaurav Dayal on November 1st, 2008 12:44 am

@Vasanbala & Honhaar, hey guys music composition comes as an amalgamation of various influences we hear while we are growing up. It may have a similar feel, not done as a conscious act. Also thanks for mentioning Ballo cause it was done by me. So you see i have a tendency to sound like myself ha ha… Thanks for your feedback. Cheers!

  53. Honhaar Goonda on November 1st, 2008 1:17 am

Indeed. The track is Produced by you - just checked back of the album cover. But….. Saibal kaun hai? I was under illusion that only Rabbi, Mauro and KJ Singh were incharge of the album..

a question.. were you present when Amitabh wrote the lyrics and you gave him Ballo suggestion? how does it work? lyricists gives you the lyrics or you guys work in a collaboration…

    anyway, i prefer Ballo…

  54. Gaurav Dayal on November 1st, 2008 4:31 am

@Honhaar, Saibal is a mind blowing guitarist from Delhi, a true genius. I work a lot with him and I really respect him as a musician. I work both ways, sometimes I have a tune going and then I do some dummy lyrics, once the tune is approved with some rough arrangement, I approach a lyricist, in this case Amitabh. Sometimes I will get a sthahi or Antra or just poetry from a lyricist and I try to phrase that into a tune. So its just about how and when inspiration strikes. Many a times I am just programming drums and start to play some chord progressions randomly , and that will lead to something.. Many times I just discard everything and start from scratch.. Thanks for your interest :)
