SORRY BHAI!
SORRY BHAI!
Been wanting to write for PFC for some time now… a lot has been happening and despite wanting to, I have not had the time. So SORRY BHAI!
I do not know where to start. Suddenly the shoot is over. The first cut ready and I am in the midst of the CHITRANGDA comeback phenomena. How do I react? When I approached her for the film. I desperately wanted her to say a yes, because she suited the character of Aliyah perfectly, and I loved her as an actress in Hazaron Also, I was one month away from shoot and had no actress. There was a lot at stake. The trust and dates of all my actors. A lot of financial investment had already gone into the film and I was really worried. What if I did not get the correct cast and had to push the film once again. How would I manage to get everyone together again? And how would I repay the money I had borrowed to start making the film.
I emailed her the script. She called back after three hours, saying that she loved the script and wanted to do the film. But she was not sure whether this should be her comeback. After all this was a romantic comedy…. very different from the image that people love and remember her for. Yet, maybe that is what attracted her to the script just like it attracted me. I am doing something I have not tried before. A romantic comedy…. which uses the populist language and at the same time is a little subversive. The script excited me because I loved the simplicity of narration … it made me smile, laugh and shed a few tears. I felt that for my growth as a director I needed to do this film. And I was glad that my writer Ashwini Malik was ready to trust me with his script.
Maybe this desire pushed me to take the risk involved in realising the project. And once again it was friends Jaspreet and Sanjay Suri who supported me in my efforts to make this film happen. I had this stubborn feeling… that come what may, I am going to make this film. We did not have a financier when we started shooting our first schedule in Mumbai. I was worried pretending in front of everyone that everything is fine….. but there were sleepless nights… and finally one week before we left for Mauritius we had a financier!
To get back where I started … CHITRANGDA! I told her I really do not care if my film is her comeback film or not, all that matters to me is she does my film and we should meet. I was sure that it would help her decide?. I flew down to Delhi, with the contract and cheque, wondering what she would be like. Would she or would she not finally sign? And there I was ringing her bell and she was in front of me. Warm, beautiful and absolutely upfront. We chatted and in an hours time I was headed back to Mumbai… having signed Chitrangda signed on for the film. I did not realise then that this was becoming a Chitrangda comeback film…. because I knew she was in conversation for some other projects. All that mattered to me is that she did the film…. if some other film of hers released before mine it did not bother me… because for me she would still be the same actress.
Also for me the film is not just about her… it is about having fulfilled a dream from many years to work with Shabana Azmi. An absolute delight to work with. It was amazing to see her bring Gayatri to life… to chat with her about films. She and Boman used to be the energy and fun quotient. Playing dumb charades and singing. Making jokes and pulling my leg. Just made the atmosphere so much more fun.
One day, after having shot for about a week with Boman and Shabana, post a particularly fun shot I said nice. Everyone started clapping. I was intrigued. Apparently this was the first time I praised the actors. Usually after a shot I ask my DOP is it Ok with you and if he says OK I say its OK with me too… moving on. In the process of tying to complete my film on time I forgot that there were my actors expecting some kind of reaction beyond an OK after a take. Apparently Shabana asked Boman at the end of the first day of shot with her isko mera acting pasand nahin aya kya? and he told her yeh aisa hi hai. I used to think that saying wow, wonderful, very good after every shot makes it sound so fake… I was told by them.. no no its always welcome, we actors need it.
SORRY BHAI! Also introduced to me another wonderful actor Sharman Joshi. Soft spoken, jovial and easy to work with…. I loved the way he got into the skin of the character and became my Siddharth. He is someone who is always trying to understand how I see the character, and become that. After MBN, I had ended up thinking of Sanjay and Juhi as Nikhil and Anu and after SORRY BHAI! I now have a Sid (Siddharth) and Aly (Aliyah) in my life.

Hi Onir… good to hear from you after a long time. Experiences of a film maker are always fascinating. Would like to know more about your film.
Nice read up onir
I am looking forward to the movie :). So when does it release ?
@ Gajendra . hey thanks you. you know some how I was finding it difficult to write…. just kind of spaced out. will maybe write another post- more film centric. right now just finishing my edit… so butterflies time begins now
@Vivek. thanks… sometime in aug/early sept. I will be ready by july but release will depend on what else is releasing.
Thanks for posting this Onir! Waiting to watch your movie! How was the experience making a rom-com different form making MBN? Do you have any genres you prefer to work?
@Sarang. the experience was different in so many ways… MBN was my first film so I was a different person then. while working on SORRY BAHI! there was a comfort level because my crew was a mix of people from MBN and BEP… so we have a basic sense of understanding.
Emotionally MBN was draining as i was all the time in that world. SORRY BAHI! Was a relief in terms of keeping me smiling while working :). But it was reminding me a lot of MBN…. maybe because of the Sea as a constant back drop… some locations and the crew.
As a director I think i would like to try out different genres. right now i feel am just learning to figure out my strength and weakness… no preferences now… just need to experience everything. SORRY BHAI!
Wishing you the best for SORRY BHAI! and hoping for the best from you SORRY BHAI!
Hello….
(Purab was a revelation!). Here’s wishing all the best for SORRY BHAI. Thanks for bringing back Chitrangada Singh!!!
Just wanted to let you know how much I loved (and still love…. I have a DVD) MY BROTHER NIKHIL! I was also very happy to know that there was someone who, like me, believed that Sanjay Suri was a really good actor
@Sarang, Debashri thank you.
Hi Onir,
hows the character of siddharth played by sharman…coz from the looks it seems to be some kind of serious character….if so we have not seen sharman that often as serious charatcer…..i am sure he will carry that as well…and i beleive he is one of the most underated actor we have
@Anand… well Sid is kind of a serious character who is funny. he is a shy intense scientist. very passionate about work and music. but is a little awkward and forgetfull. he is a wondeful actor…
Hi Onir
Why did you decide to shoot in Mauritius? Is the script based there or for some other reason?
I hope you and your DOP were able to capture the real beauty of Mauritius outside of the usual beaches that almost every other Bollywood movie focusses on.
Also do write something about the music in Sorry Bhai! soon…
Best of luck for your post production! Keep posting…
WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME BHAI !!!!
SUPER POST … wonderful read ….
I’m going to make the most obvious request ….
more pics of chitrangda plssssssssssss
Thanks for the stills Onir bhai, looking good. I’m hoping this will be more on a thinking-man’s comedy and not the nonsensical stuff we’ve been suffering through. I like the idea of casting Sharman Joshi against the stereotype - we’ve all seen his amazing comic timing, time to let some of the other facets of his acting talent shine through.
Must say I’m quite envious too. Sharman is one actor I’d love to work with.
ohhh and of course … all the best
ONIR BHAI, all d best for SORRY BHAI!
:)>-:)>-:)>-:)>-
Hi Onir, let us hear it from the horse’s mouth. is Sorry Bhai really a remake of Dan in Real Life?
CHITRANGDA….i luv her..shes da diva.
Onir good choice buddy.
@dazed and confused… we were looking for a location by the sea…. outside India, with a good Indian population. had done reccee in Australia … but was too expensive. so went with my writer to Mauritius and re worked the script trying to incorporate the location and its flavour into the script…. and hopefully you will see it in the film.
. will write about the music soon
Onir great to see your post after a long….space..
Is SORRY BHAI the same film you intended to shoot in Kashmir, when you wrote the last post, all the best.
@ Kartik lol thanks… more pics to follow soon:)
@shailesh… thank you
@Rony… let me try and see that film first. and meanwhile will ask my writer. then i can answer you.
@Srikant thanks …
@Suchita… no no its not the same film. Hope I will get to make that next. have just started re visiting that script. really wanna do it
hmmm looking forward:) i was wondering, there are already three films in the finishing phases with theme Kashmir.
Hey Onir, welcome back…n u r so fast man….. shooting done, first cut done…zoop, zaap… how ? how ?
great read as usual and thnx a ton for the pics. eagerly waiting for the film now. its great cast for sure. cant wait to c chitrangda back on the big screen again….
Btw,u trying to impress Chitrangda thru body-shody kya ? (pic 3):-?;) And this time there is no Nikhil in the film!! so u finally replaced Nikhil with Sid ?
SO WHEN IS IT RELEASING BUDDY???, btw seems a pretty big star cast
was waiting for u to do something like this after mbn,
BUT, hey where did this film come up from suddenly, last time u posted u said its going to be a film based in kashmir, what happened to that??
anyways best of luck for this too hope it would rock!!!!!!:):):)
p.s- just one out of topic question, since am learning to write screenplays myself, how many drafts do u usually make for a script?
Hi Onir Bhai
Good to recieve ur post regarding SB.
Thanks for sharing the path …
Wish u all the best
Hey Onir,
Glad to have you back posting. I thought I ask again for a post about your work with Vivek Philip. There’s so little written elsewhere about him, his background and your collaborations … [-o<
aaaah .. what did i miss !!!
ALL THE BEST ONIR !!
Hi Onir, your post has given an unique insight into the making of SORRY BHAI.
Love the contemporary sounding title too.
Who gets to play the role of Chitrangda’s BHAI?
I’d feel SORRY for him
Welcome Sirjeee….stoked about Sorry Bhai…and thank you thank you for bringing back Chitragandha…
As mentioned in one of the coomenst..it wud be a criminal waste, if you do not have some comic lines for Sharman..this guy has really amazing comic timing..even wen he is serious..rem Life in a Metro? where Kangana attempts suicide..
BTW one more request Bhai…Can we get any of the crew actors or behind the scene guys to write on pfc? it wud be awesome to get their pov too..
@ Onir,
Inspite of all the glowing reviews you have received for MBN (all deserved I’m sure), I have yet to watch it. I will do it soon.
good luck on this project. i have been telling people for a while now to watch out for that Sharman. He has better range than most actors as witnessed in his performance in Metro, and his other comedies.
He is perched to become the trickster-romantic hero, and I hope ur film helps him get there. I have him in mind for my RomCom that I am currently writing.
Good luck.
@Tony thanks… will pass on the message to Sharman, I saw the first cut today… and i think he is super in the film…. and doing something that he has not done before….
phoenixnu … haha… trying hard you see…:)
Editing was happening parallel to the shoot sooo… Yes am really happy with the cast…. yes i thought Nikhil has been overworked… so i just named the dad the same as victor from MBN… navin…. hehe …. needed some connection.and have to work fast as i am still working on small budget film and trying to make it look good
hey onir,
its nice to know that ur ready with SORRY BHAI….will be waiting to watch this movie eagerly….
Just to inform u that i loved ur MBN but cannot say the same for BEP…..I just hope that we get to see the same old touch that we saw in MBN….and knowing the star cast u have used for SORRY BHAI…..I think we are in for some refreshing cinema from u…..ALL the best ONIR!!!!
Onir - As already requested by others, how’s the music turning out? Quite keen to hear more on that. All the best for SB!!
@Rick… i keep working on couple of scripts (some written by me some by other writers)as its so difficult to put together an interesting cast. After one year we could finally get the correct cast. the Kashmir film I am writting still needs the correct actress… so am waiting.
well really depends…. MBN had about 3 drafts. Sorry Bahi about 8…. and have worked on others up to 16…( not counting every small change made as a seperate draft)
@Kuka… Thank you.
@George… just met Vivek today… been telling him to write here…. he is also making one song for SB and the background
@Medium… Thanks
@Arun… No one blays Chitrangda’s Bhai… both Sanjay and Sharman are brothers…. and Chitrangda’s in their “object” of desire…
@OM… :). he is and has some funny lines… but as i mentioned before its not a “tickle me” comedy. it is more smiles. OM let me talk to some of them and see if anyone would like to write..
@Dabba… i do not like you since you have not seen MBN…
and I will tell Sharman not to read your ROM-COM till you see it… hehe… you will see the romance in him in SB… i think he brings something different.
@mudassir… thanks … and hope you like SB..;.. giving all my energy now…
@Subrat… i have a new music dir GAURAV DAYAL. two new male singers… and a lovely Jazz track recorded in NY:). I think you should like the music
Hey Onir.
You should really check out Dan in Real Life. The more I read about SB, the more it seems similar. Not that I won’t watch it if it’s ‘inspired’. Sharman Joshi’s a real talent!
Btw, I preferred BEP to SB (found it too slow).
*sorry, preferred BEP to MBN
Surely am waitin for the movie and the soundtrack….
The most captivating thing about both MBN and BEP was the music….I definitely hope we are in for another musical treat this time round apart from experiencing a good movie…….
After all its film makers like u nd others,ONIR, who keep the hopes alive for avid movie-goers and aspiring film makers like us…..
Welcome back Onir….and thanks a lot for bringing Chitrangda back on silver screen…would like to get some more dope on some interesting stories on shoots and how everything shaped up and ofcourse music too…
Its been a while since I have seen a bollywood movie on a lazy sunday afternoon and feel “life is gooooooood”…I hope Sorry Bhai is one…
Good luck….
@Pratik… yes i promise to see it soon since everyone is referring to it…. and give my honest opinion.
About BEP and MBN i suppose there are varied reactions. some find BEP slow…. but as long as you preffered something am happy
@Mudassir… that was really a nice thing to say… and its such encouraging stuff that also helps us film makers to move on and try to better ourself.
@Varun… Thank you…. I think SB music will be refreshingly different. Like I mentioned before its a new music dir… the songs have a young bright feel, except for the angst song. lyrics are written by my constant lyricist Amitabh Varma and i think they are simple and touching,
congrats Onir on completion of the film!! all the very best!
Onir nice post. As an script writer post like these always give hope that some day I will be working with these amazing actors.
Just one suggetion, I think Bas Ek Pal would have been a very good movie had the editing been tight. I understand that when we are close to our subject we loose focus. To us all our canned shots are the best shots and we want to keep all of them.
Hopefully same will not happen with you again.
Congrats on wrapping up your shoot Onir! All the best for the post and the rest! Looking forward to the interesting combination of actors and your maiden attempt at a romantic comedy. I am sure it is going to be worth its while!
Read your piece with a lot of interest but this statement of yours hit me the hardest - ‘We did not have a financier when we started shooting our first schedule in Mumbai.’
What courage! I salute you Onir for doing all it takes to realise what your heart craves the most - making films!
Wishing we have lots more like you around!
Onir, I loved both MBN and BEP. I think you have a very distinct style of film making…a very sensitive and personal…after watching your films, I felt like I understood something about you(as a person)…to me, it seems like either, you are expressing a part of your life in a very creative way through this medium or, your involvement in the process of creation invariably results in the final product with a slice of your personality. Which one of these is true??…I might be wrong in both accounts but thats what I feel about your work and wanted to share it with you…
Keenly awaiting for SB. Sharman as a scientist !!! interesting casting….and Chtitrangda ..just simple wow!…
Good luck.
@manjeet… thanks
@Vivek… you are right sometimes we are too close to our shots to know how to let go. But at same time( not related to BEP) I think we are also becoming bad listners in general. want everything said fast and quick. but one has to acknowledge that. I have consciously stayed uot of the edit till the first cut was ready just to get another perspective and showing it to some ppl before finalising the cut. so hopefully it wont feel long :). its anyway a lil less than 2 hours long
@Fatema… thank you Fatema
@Vikrant… well partly true. Once one actor asked me ” give me a reference for the look of the film” I had none … because i let my mind imagine the visuals. In terms of the stories of course a lot of it is Personal- direct and indirect. also I feel like making films through which i feel i can explore myself more… get to know more about people and life and generally enrich myself. so in terms of style again it reflects my personal taste…for example I prefer softness am uncomfortable with the use of abusive language… and particular about how women are in my films and so on…. hope i have answered your Q
Well, ONIR I suppose its the appreciation from audiences and ur fellow colleagues tht keeps u guys going….
But honestly speaking, movie-goers like us always look up to filmmakers like u nd others….coz we know that if there any film-makers who can push the limits and barriers of film-making in our industry are film makers like u…..So pls just keep up the work that u guys are doing us and keep fascinating us with amazing movies….All the best!!!!!
hit hai bhai…all the best
Yes you have. Thanks Onir. Good luck for SB.
Impressive cast!
Good luck
@mudassir… thank you once again buddy,
@Vasanbala… love you for saying that… hehe
@Neeraja… Thank you
Onir its really nice the way you actually take time to read and respond to random people.For a film-maker or even an average human being you have unbeleivable listening
and trust me u light up a lot of hearts by just responding ^_^
look forward to all the cinematic brilliance thats about to come out of you…
Onir how do i audition for you/your films?Yes im an actor.
you’re story seems very similar to that of dan in real life….but i guess uv got a stellar cast probably one of the best ensemble casts yet….
that was meant to be your not you’re
Hmmm…
Looks interesting. Sharman as a serious character was great in Life in a Metro…
It’s good to listen to a film-maker’s experiences…Anyways, I’ll wait for the promos to tell if I’ll buy your ticket or not. I trust trailers more than I trust the Critics.
:d
And by the way, the NAME of the film is very good. Very catchy.
Cheers,
Sameer
@VIVEK… no one is an average human being…. i respond because i need to hear to grow as a film maker…. to find new stories…. you can send me your pic and resume at anticlockfilms@gmail.com and if there is something appropriate i will definately get in touch
@Abhay… i know everyone has been telling me about Dan in real life… have to make time and see it… but honestly its stopped bothering me…. because i know where i come from and trust my writer when he told me he has not seen the film…. maybe the concept has similarities…. but then it is similar to Charulata too…. when i made MBn it was compared to Docus that i had not seen and Philadephia… though for me it was based on Dominique ’s story… so…
but i sincerly hope its a differnt film….
@Sameer… will try and work on an interesting Promo :)… and yes I like the name too. and hope you buy tickets to see the film…
Thnx Onir for responding once again….As vivek rightly pointed out its really heartening to know that u reply back to us and take time to read through the views posted by people like us……
It really feelds good to know that we are heard and acknowledged by u….
ONIR,a small question????
Is it really possible for a mive - goer and an aspiring film maker like me to neter the world of movie direction????
Can we really get into this art by assisting somebody like u ….Or what is the best course of action for somebody like me who wants to direct movies….
Migh be speaking nonsense ONIR but just want to spend my life directing movies like u guys….
Any advice,ONIR????
@mudassir…. i think all film makers are essentially first “movie goers”… and only if one aspires one can become somethings. there is no set rule of how…. assisting helps… but i never assisted but trained in a film school…. so it all depends on how badly you want to do it…. then i am sure you would find a way…. but personally i think film schooling does help….
Onir, is this the same movie for which you tried
to get Farooque Shaikh (which you mentioned here
before)?
It would really have been great to see him back
on the big screen.
Hey everyone, this is Gaurav, the music composer for ‘Sorry Bhai’. Onir has asked me to write about the music for the film. Onir had initially liked a couple of rough song ideas from my demo cd.I then did a couple more scratch melody ideas for him as the script was being finalised, and to my pleasant surprise, Onir decided to give me a break for the entire soundtrack of the film. I was very excited when I was asked to compose the Jazz track for the movie. We went to a posh studio at Madison Square garden, New York, and dubbed Nanette, who is a prominent Jazz singer in NY. We selected 2 male voices from Delhi, Abhishek & Chayan. These were the voices on the scratch demos we were using, but Onir ended up liking them, and well… we went ahead with them. We have a romantic duet “Pal” with Sunidhi & Chayan. “Mere Khudaa” is a passionate/ powerful rock track. “Jalte Hain” is rendered by Abhishek, and has a sad strain to it. Plus 2 Hot Remixes are also featured on the soundtrack.
I hope you guys dig the music for the film. :)>-
both MBN and BEP had excellent music,
so really looking forward to hearing the music of this film..:):)
its not everyday that you get to hear jazz in bollywood flicks
Hi Onir
Thanks for bringing back Chitrangda…i was really thiking where she had gone after such beautiful like hazaroon…. will be waiting for the movie release
Good Luck to you and gaurav too
Thanks Prashant….
@ Gaurav -
Thanks for taking the time to post here. Looking forward to the music of Sorry Bhai. There are a lot of music and film fanatics here.
If it is not too much to ask for, could you send in a post, on how you and Onir worked together.
In terms of what inputs he had, and how you were able to understand what he was trying to express. What sort of communication did you guys have etc…
I am a filmmaker, and on my last short film, I struggled to communicate what I was looking for in the score with my composer. This will be greatly useful to me and all others here.
thanks in advance.
@Gaurav: Can’t wait to hear your compositions for Sorry Bhai!
Onir:
> just met Vivek today
@ george -
it’s the same gaurav.
onir, you do realize you’re giving us a 2-in-1 comeback. of course, the more obvious one that most guys are drooling about, and secondly, you with your post. great to see you writing again, and looking forward to more from you, as always…

@Arun Prakash — Yes i’m from MSM Delhi, r u an msmite as well?
@maddy
Yes of course I remember JU. It will always remain a special place for me. whenever i go to Kolkatta I make it a point to visit JU.
I know Bengali but am a very slow reader so that keeps me away from reading Bengali novels. I know they have great stories and its my loss… but…..
Hi Gaurav Dayal, I’m not from MSM,I think PLAYBACK is from your school. I was in a school in the vicinity - TAFS
Hi Gaurav, … I am from MSM,…and you know me, … and my brother was your classmate !
hi, to chitrangada ke saath kaam karne ka aapki khwaiishh puri ho hi gayi…even i must admit i am looking forward to this film for these reasons: it has my favourites–boman, sharman and chitrangada (though i haven’t watched Hazaro Khawaish…)personally, i am awed by her mysterious persona…we at the media will keep saying this and that regarding her ‘comeback film’ or not, but that hardly matters..you r finally breaking new rules by venturing into the toast of bollywood — comedy. i watched my brother nikhil last month and i was moved by it(i haven’t watched bas ek pal yet)…
@amit sengupta
Thanks for your comment. you should watch Hazaro… she is wonderfull in that film
hi onir, how r u?
i m delighted to see u back on pfc…with a quite absorbing posting ..as always…
is this a same script u were working on kashmir..?
the last pic of boman and sharman(if it is a part of movie)..is very much creative and artistic..infact it semms to be that your film is very special and rare….i hope it will satify my creativity of watching a cinema..
@priyank. Hey there. am busy with the post of SORRY BHAI! No this is not the same film as the Kashmir story. Hopefully The Kashmir film will be my next :). yes the pic of Boman and Sharman is a part of the film…. i hope the film will satisfy you
ok..best of luck to u ..i hope u will soon come out with the movie on kashmir….i m waiting eagerly for SORRY BHAI….when it is going to hit the theatres?
and one thing more..any plans for http://www.anticlockfilms.com…?
@priyank
Sorry Bhai should be in the theaters anytime post July… yes am planning http://www.anticlockfilms…. just have not had the time :(. will do so soon
Hello Onir-ji,
I love the cenima you concieve. I watched “My Brother Nikhil”, and I watched “Bas Ek Pal”. Your cinema is not main streem but frankly speaking I don’t care, at the end of the day when I leave the theatre I see value for money and i’ve watched both your films 3-2 times respectively…. I sincerely wish you the best for “Sorry Bhai” and I can vouch that watching this one will be worth my while and money…
PS:- one day i will act in your film for sure…
@Abbas… Thanks for your comments and your best wishes…. and hope I live up to your expectations with SORRY BHAI!. I value the encouragement…. keeps me going

P.S I hope all those kind words were not for your acting desires…. haha… well seriously speaking…. yes maybe soon
[...] I am working on a film called Sorry Bhai. A romantic film with an interesting star cast. I have Shabana Azmi, Boman Irani, Sharman Joshi, [...]

Hi Onir,
I didnt like your first film . There are many reasons for it which I wouldnt like to go into here but I’m eager to see your next movie only for Sharman Joshi because he comes across as a very honest actor and human being.And obviously also Chitraganda.
All the best.
Manish.
