sorry vishal but i love rekha bharadwaj…

……..no guys, no scandals here. And sorry to declare it on a public paltform like this. But as a film fanatic, think have the license to be vocal about my feelings. what to do, her voice has some magic that always works for me.

Since last two days, am listening to only one song in infinite loop mode…..ehi thaiyya motia heraiye gayeli rama….my gmail chat status is the same…..ehi thaiyya motia…rekha rocks. Am desperatle looking for this song to set it as caller tune. Hutch guys plz get it. Its still not there. So, for the time being its the other favourite from Omkara….zubaan pe laga namak ishq ka.

Ehi thaiyya motia…Its from Laga Chunari Me Daag. And according to my whatever uneducated musical taste, this is the best song of the album. Infact the only song that works for me. Dont actually know how much and what is the contribution of the music composer shantanu moitra in it. Because Dipankar (pfc blogger) told me its traditional popular folk and sung during chaith mahina. Dont know if they have done something with the tune or just have done the arrangements. For the lyrics, i think swanand kirkire have added few lines and simplified it.

So, even as some 30 tv monitors play almost all the news channels all round me, people run from this side to that to meet deadlines, shouts n scream….i just switch on the song, increase the volume, put on my headphone and close my eyes. The song takes me to other world. It has a unique soothing effect. The maturity in the voice brings out the expressions beautifully, the earthiness connects instantly and lingers on n on……saans se puchpo, nandiya se pucho…..can feel the mischievous smile there and i also smile along. Colleagues look around and wonder what am i listening to. Thanx for this gem Tushar, who mailed it to me. Dipankar has promised to get me the original version. And m waiting.

Coming back to my love affair. It started few years ago with the song tere ishq me from the album ishq ishq…..saw the video first and loved it. And discovered a new voice called Rekha Bharadwaj…..husky and incredibly sensous. Bought the album n found that almost all the songs are good……teri razza, roshni roshni, raat ki jogan…to name a few.

Stereotypical and conventional things generally dont work for me. And this voice is what u call unconventional according to bollywood terms. In recent times, havent found any female voice thats so attractive. Everytime the song namak ishq ka plays on tv, everytime i blankly stare at Bipasha Basu and wonder that the voice has more expression that basu’s face and her dance steps. The way she sings…..bheetar bheetar aag jale…..bansuri jaisi baji mein…..jo bhi kaha us chandrabhan ne phat se go gayee razi mein…..the visuals float in front of my eyes. May be thats the magic of a good song. You dont need to know the situation and the way its picturised but when you hear the song, you get the visuals automatically.

If am not wrong, have read in few interviews of Vishal Bharadwaj that he started learning music because of Rekha. They were in same college or something like that. Vishal fell in love and to be with her, he started going to music classes. Dont know if its true or if i read the rite thing but if she was in my college, most probably i would have done the same….just to listen to her.

Other all time favourites are lakad ban ke from omkara, rone do na from maqbool. If am not wrong, rekha hasnt sung even ten songs so far in hindi films. But why ????? Checked Imdb, she is also credited with Godmother, Makdee and Bachke Rehna Re Baba (what ???). Just wish that more music directors would use her voice and use the way Vishal and Shantanu has done. Come on guys, give us a break from all those young n squeaky n melliflous voice. This one deserves more and m sure that there are mnay like me. Till then…m putting my ear phones back…..ehi thaiyya motia……

those of you who havent heard the song..here’s the online link from musicindia…

Her first album had a brilliant “sufiana” touch, given by Gulzar saab himself and had done pretty well. But she kinda faded away after that(a case, sadly, with so many other good voices from the 90’s). Good to hear more of her lately.Very potent voice. Would love to hear her live sometime…

Btw phoenixu, your writing shows you clearly are quite “struck” by her. Wake up my boy! : )

  2. Abhimanyu on September 14th, 2007 12:48 pm

First heard her in an obscure film starring Jimmy Shergill…forgetting the name…it had Vishal’s music. Knew right then that this was special. Then there was another song in “Chahchi 420″.

Its really a wonder that she has not been more prolific…

  3. Varun on September 14th, 2007 1:23 pm

“ek woh din bhi the….” thats the song from chachi 420.. simple brilliant everythings great about that song gulzar’s lyrics, vishal’s music and rekha’s soulful voice…..I love lakad from omakara too….

  4. Vivek H on September 14th, 2007 1:32 pm

@Abhimanyu, is it from the movie “Jahan Tum le Chalo” starring Jimmy Shegill and music by Vishal? It had some other good songs like “Athanni si zindagi”, don’t remember others and wonderful lyrics by Gulzar saab. I’ve been looking for this album since a long time, never found it.

  5. Pratik on September 14th, 2007 1:59 pm

    @ Abhimanyu, Vivek

I think the song you’re referring to is “Yeh kaisi chaap kadmon ki (sunayee de rahi hai)”; it’s soothing to the core. I have the mp3’s of Jahan Tum Le Chalo. If you need them, mail me at mailpratik-at-gmail-dot-com. It’s been one of my favorites since the first time I laid my ears on them.

  6. Honhaar Goonda on September 14th, 2007 2:12 pm

there ain’t no singers like her. there ain’t no voices like her. there ain’t no other Rekha Bhardwaja. there is only one Rekha Bhardwaja - and she is brilliant. and she does not sing dozen of songs - she only sings quality songs!

My favorite song of her are: Namak Ishq Ka and Tere Ishq Ne.

  7. PavanJha on September 14th, 2007 2:16 pm

She has been one of my favorites ever since I heard her voice.. She definitely has more emotions in her songs than Aishwarya or Priyanka can put up on screen..

and Rone do na.. what a beautiful haunting song it has been.. Since the day I have watched Maqbool, the song has stayed within… not leaving me since then..

@Abhimanyu : That was Jahaan tum le chalo and the song was Ye kaisee chaap…

Some more recommendations for Rekha songs

    1. Meri jaan - Bhagmati
    2. Ek woh din bhi the - Chachi 420
    3. Mhare raja ki roko sawari - Godmother
    4. Raat ki jogan (and almost all the tracks of Ishqa Ishqa)

BTW Gulzar saab, Vishal and Rekha are coming up with yet another non-film album..

    @Phoenixnu
    for you..

    “baadal dhune
    mausam bune
    sadiyaan gini
    lamhe chune
    mausam bune
    lamhe chune
    kuchh garm the
    kuchh gun.gune
    tere ishq mein….”

  8. Satya on September 14th, 2007 2:20 pm

I went thru exactly the same phase with ‘Namak issq ka’ a few months back… listened non stop for about a week :) .. deja vu

  9. Abhimanyu on September 14th, 2007 2:30 pm

    @Pratik

thats the song. I last heard it when it released about ten years back I think.

  10. PavanJha on September 14th, 2007 2:54 pm

My post went missing on this :( trying to post it says, duplicate post :( in the meantime found Jahaan tum le chalo and Chachi 420 already mentioned..

Another recommendation for Rekha fans would be Meri Jaan from Bhagmati.. am sure you’d love this one too..

as for Rone do na is concerned.. what a song… haunting and not leaving me since I have seen the film a few years back.. staying with me and kept playing and playing ever since… Rekha has more expressions in her songs than put together by Aishwarya and Priyanka on Screen..

Watch out for another Rekha_Vishal_Gulzar album soon..

  11. Vivek H on September 14th, 2007 4:16 pm

Pratik, I would really appreciate if you could send me those mp3s. I’ve sent an email to you requesting them. Thanks for the info and songs too.

  12. Steve on September 14th, 2007 4:41 pm

‘Ek woh din’ from ‘Chachi 420′ is a timeless song.
    So haunting. So touching.
I never tire from hearing this track.

I’ve only recently mangaed to find the cd version of it, as for years I had only the tape cassette!!

‘Rone Do’ from ‘Maqbool’ is one of my all time faves. It’s so atmospheric.

Yes, we don’t hear enough from her, and she is very under-used.

Her work in ‘Laaga Chunari..’ is superb, as expected, but I have to add, I really like the ‘Hum Toh Aise Hain Bhaiya’ track alot too.

Looks like there is a possibility of awards here maybe?????

  13. Rohan on September 14th, 2007 6:23 pm

No mention of her album - Ishqa Ishqa?

  14. Shailesh Limbachiya. on September 14th, 2007 10:00 pm

“Ek woh din” is also my one of the favourites..did not know it was sung by Rekhaji.
    thanks for reminding the song.

  15. parull on September 15th, 2007 1:20 am

    she is the best.

  16. Tushar on September 15th, 2007 1:30 am

thanks for reopening a page from the past. rekha’s small yet impressive repertoire is the stuff for timeless classics. when I first heard her in ‘jahaan tum le chalo’(ye kaisi chaap kadmo ki sunaai de rahi hai, koi aata hai ya koi chal ke guzar jaata hai/something like that), I was struck to the lack of effort in her voice, such restrained, lazy singing does not come past you often. then came ‘ek wo din’ and I was further seduced by the quiet emotion, the pain in her voice. i never thought she could churn out a commercial number so well but vishal proved me wrong with Namak issaq ka. magical. truly astounding. love her tere ishq mein, laakad, and ya eh thaiyya :-)

and ya, your music senses are just fine. one who can write a post on such a seminal singer can’t be a music novice from any angle.

waiting for her to work with Rahman.

some of my inspired work from her brilliant vocal touch in Omkara…
    (from an old post)

    (Tej thaa jhonka kya karoon….)
Out I take my gunpowder and there you go down
I will not get any better now
Now that I have tasted it once
I am addicted till I die
These blue sheets below me and the sodiums do no longer any good
The make up looks a shade less real in the green room mirror

(kabhi ankhiyon se peena Kabhi hothon se peena..)
Me redefining the way value was valued in the yore

The night passed in a whimper and it still lingered on, your harsh denial

(Aisi phoonk lagi jaalim ki ke baansuri jaisi baaji main…..)
    And pop I said yes!
This beat will go till I like it to go on

    (Karvat karvat pyaas lagi thi
    Tej thaa jhonka….)

I sang and I dance without a sense of time

(Kabhi acha lage marna kabhi muskil lage jeena…)
Relief was just a life away
    No, no, a little slower

    Tere issaq ka

God has intentionally created just one planet each be it Earth, Sun or Moon. Rekha Bhardwaj is no less such a creation by God.

We all love each and every song Rekha has sung so far. And ‘Ehi thaiyya motia…’ is another brilliant thumari.

    Rekhaji,

I just loved the song “Namak Ishq ka” I have listend to it 100s of times.

I am a great fan of Vishalji too. Could you please share your love story on PFC?

    regards

  41. Panini on September 17th, 2007 6:59 am

Namak Ishq ka is by far the best song of Omkara. But I also like the way Vishal has used daff in BeeRi - the portion where the song goes into secondary perspective - a cross-cut to the moment of intiamacy between Omkara and his Desdemona. This is absolutely original within the Indian film music. I liked all the songs of the film barring the failed ballad sung by Sukhwinder. That was particularly disappointing.

  42. Panini on September 17th, 2007 7:12 am

On second thoughts, maybe the problem is with Gulzar. He remains to my mind the most inconsistent lyricist of Hindi films. Javed Akhtar on the other hand is merely consistent. The device he uses is simile - ‘jaise yeh’, ‘jaise woh’… ad nauseum.

  43. Phoenixnu on September 17th, 2007 7:23 am

@Panini…dont like beedi at all. i think overplay killed the song for me.n i abosultly love astab debo’s choregraphy in the title song of omkara…with those manipuri artists. hav always felt that javed is better poet than lyricist. his lyrics is mostly tuk-bandi without much thought into it. gulzar…is repetitive in the use of similie but he experiments with words n thoughts a lot.

  44. Panini on September 17th, 2007 7:44 am

I fully endorse your views on Astad’s choreography. He was brilliant even in MF Husain’s Meenakshi. I would possibly agree with you about the Tuk-baNd Javed. However, I find his poetry either excessively dramatic or, which is worse, melodramatic. Gulzar, on the other hand, has an uncanny knack of converting a perfectly sublime mukhRa into a ludicrous antara - see his ‘dekhna mere sir se’ in Bunty aur Bubli. Gulzar’s strength, however, is that he avoids similes as far as possible. He works a lot with metaphors and metonymy. Also, both these lyricists are working within a context where the space of reflection has been extinct for long. Anurag tried to be reflective in his Black Friday but Piyush turned out to be either inscrutable or merely pedantic.

  45. rekha on September 17th, 2007 7:51 am

    thanks all…

@phoenixnu : einhee thhainyaan is chaiti from benaras , hav come to kno after gave interviews few days bak when all th jounalists were aware of it n asked me coz shantnu called me a year back n sang sthaai of ths thumri explaining th situation…then we sat in singers booth n after listening me imitate th sthaai he composed antara n gave me th freedom to embellish it…next day wen i went on the mic i started singing nd he gave me more freedom…he wanted more mischief n slight nasal n a voice of a singer chewing paan…he encouraged me a lot n without making me conscious kept extracting my best…then in stanza he even taught me th scanning of lyrics nd how to add more naughtiness to it…n swanand helped me with diction of few words like that twisting haeraay while singing rather tahn hiraay…thoroughly enjoyed singing this thumri…coz of shantnu i got a chance to sing thumri on record for the first time…and once i got comfortable singing i just took off n did variations of last phrase aeinhiin thhainyaan…..had bad throat so wanted to go n dub few lines later but shantnu was very happy with th final outcome so dint…enough for today….

  46. V.P. Jaiganesh on September 17th, 2007 8:02 am

    Tushar!
Rekha has already worked with Rahman.
She has sung a song for Thamizh Film Baba for which Rahman scored the music.
Baba was 2002 film of Rajinikanth that bombed all over. I, however like the movie for it was the first thamizh film to poke its nose into alternate spiritual leanings. The interesting trivia about the song she sang was the fact that Ashutosh gowariker liked the song very much and asked Rahman to include it in his “Swades”. So you have the song in Swades as “Dekho na”. Rekhaji, please write as to how you sang in Thamizh.

  47. Varun on September 17th, 2007 9:05 am

@saurabh will email you by tonight….

  48. Tushar on September 17th, 2007 11:37 am

@VPJ, Thanks for the update. I have heard Baba’s song and prefer the Swades version. But I would check out the Tamil version now surely .
If I am correct, there was a brilliant thumri by the same team in Hazaaron Khwaahishen Aisi as well, Na Aaye Piya…

  49. Jaiganesh on September 17th, 2007 12:38 pm

The thamizh version has some stuff put in for Rajinikanth. the hindi version is a bit more laid back and sober. it is a good tune though.
