SRK rocks, Kajol ditto
Khalid Mohamed | Cinema Ray, Editors, Exclusive | February 11, 2010 at 9:35 am
PrintCast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, no one else matters except Zarina Wahab maybe who does an accomplished turn as Ammi India
Director: Karan Johar
Rating: Four stars
Your heart goes out to him. Hungry as hell, he accepts a roti roll from strangers in a bus cutting through the nightscape of America. He wolfs one down, shoving the other one poker-faced in his pocket. A perfect awwww-moment.
Indeed such vignettes are the most appealing aspect of the much-beleaguered My Name is Khan. Take, too, the man’s monologue on the unbearable pain of losing a loved one. Clearly, here’s the film’s finest moment which moistens your eyes. As they do again when the vulnerable Khan is lashed by rain on a lonely highway. Or as he walks on a red-brick-walled street jejunely, striving to control his body language. And there’s that tearing sequence when he mutters-stutters in an ice-cold hospital corridor on confronting tragedy.
Karan Johar’s plea for global secularism,in the wake of the 9/11 devastation ,brims over with quite a few emotionally stirring punctuation marks. The entire text, alas, is neither convincing nor insightful. Like it or not, the subject required at least a patina of gritty realism and an experiential howl of protest. Instead, the result is more gloss than solid substance.
Huh huh huh…Fatally, the concluding reels fly off into la-la land, upgrading the little man grappling with insurmountable Kryptonite odds into a Super-duperman. Nuh, nuh, nuh.
Blame the glaring unevenness, essentially, to the screenplay, which believe it or not has shades of the Raj Kapoor-produced Ab Dilli Door Nahin (1957), in which wronged kids sought the attention of Pandit Nehru. Plus, Khan, afflicted by autism (Asperger’s syndrome, it is specified), has elements of Forrest Gump, and the nervy habit of rolling pebbles in a hand – a throwback to Humphrey Bogart’s shifty act in Caine Mutiny. A coincidental quirk, perhaps, but it’s there. Bogey Wogey?
Honestly, of all Johar’s scripts, this one takes far too many potshots in the dark. (Incidentally, the solo credit for the writing goes to Shibani Bhatija, thank you very much). Devoid of truly dramatic conflict, the written material is lean on ideas, culminating in a finale that’s a mega-mess. Spoiler alert? Wait, wait, wait. Suffice it to say there’s a mega-hurricane to handle, a marooned group of black souls filmed in the shadows and occasional close-ups, followed by bonhomie shared with…you don’t want to know. Oh.
So, why the four stars above? Purely for two outstanding performances which assert that even if the two artistes were to read out telephone directories, they would still command your undivided attention, besides giving you a serious case of the goose bumps. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol – bring them together – and any filmmaker’s job is already accomplished. Their gift for raising ordinary material to the extraordinary is sheer delight. Here are ageless dilwales whose chemistry, physics, algebra –call it what you will – is as intoxicating as the world’s finest champagne. Cheers!
Proof: the after-wedding scene when both are on bed, waiting for the other to make the first move. When he does, it’s awwww-some. In fact, the film’s first-half hinging on their romance is sheer delight, besides catching Johar at what he is more proficient at: charm, tongue-in-chic humour and cashmere warmth. Full marks to Johar for that.
Now, how you wish the director would consolidate his skills in this area of human behavour. Sorry, but he is a goldfish in a bowl, blowing bubbles, when it comes to swimming through societal and political currents. Awareness has to be innate, not narrated second-or-third-hand. Kabhi Islamic Issues Na Kehna.. just check out Garm Hawa to get clued into realpolitik. Please, please, please.
The plot, jagged and jejune, deals of course with Gump (Shah Rukh Khan) and his child-like love for a single mother (Kajol) and her knee-high son. Just sample that moment when he stops her from eating calorie-packed chocolates. Next: trouble in paradise. She accuses his faith for a tragic loss. Ergo, he must make a symbolic trip – up and way from home – for redemption. In this act, he remains true to his self, weaknesses intact, a loser, who must do right, to regain perhaps the only person he has ever loved. Follow encounters with fundamentalists, piggish cops, and assorted travellers.
Throughout, Ravi C Chandran’s cinematography is cool and collected, except when the visuals dip into Hollywood-style special effects. Ehsan-Shankar-Loy’s music score needed far more fervour, and the lyrics far more maturity (Tere naina is as shallow as they come). The dialogue aims to be punchy but is frequently strictly marshmallow. Mush ado.
Never mind. At the end of 18 reels, you do carry something precious home – SRK and Kajol. They are absolutely electric. Undoubtely, they don’t make’em like that anymore. And never will, which is why MNIK is absolutely compulsory viewing. You may have problems with it. Yet it is a must-must-see.
PS: Am an unabashed SRK fan…and supremely proud of it. No one else compares to him today…
PS:The film’s release has been stopped in certain states for politically partisan reasons. Support it, NOW.

it seemed like a biased review to begin with, but your ‘PS’ has confirmed it. a critic should have an unbiased and objective opinion of a movie. but your unabashed likeness for srk and kajol has overshadowed the demerits of the movie. this review isn’t worth a dime!
.
if any other movie had as many gaping holes as you mentioned in your first few paras, then you would’ve trashed the movie. but srk and kajol has blinded you, as already confessed.
.
not sure of the actual number of deserving stars for the movie, but definitely zero stars for this review.
loading...
i second you man…the stars should be given for the movie as a whole and not just for brilliant performances by the lead pair…
loading...
Well, seems our man had a tough time while writing this review. He is a SRK fan and seems to have fallen out with KJo recently.
So he praises SRK’s acting and disses KJo on his twitter page. From his twitter page at http://twitter.com/ohkhalid
“As usual karan johar is going to mstermind reviews for his MNIK…beware..the ultimate self promoter”
loading...
after a long time iam completely agreeing with your review and its my opinion too the review is completely fair and genuine. even iam in awwe of sharukhs n kajols chemistry they rock and make all moments adorable they made those so ordinary scenes too very lovable and intense.yes the script and knowledge of islamic faith is certainly not a area of expertise by karan and niranjan. sharukh should have provide inputs. performances mindblowing i loved the kid too. khalid sir i agree to all the moments u felt were superb. very rightly reviewed… congrats . u were in the very balanced frame of mind…
loading...
“..es the script and knowledge of islamic faith is certainly not a area of expertise by karan and niranjan .sharukh should have provide inputs..”
PLEASE GROW UP or ATLEAST GROW A BRAIN
loading...
I totally agree
loading...
yeah, i guess khalid is sucking up to srk because he wishes srk will say “yes” to one of his projects. after all review kitna din likhenge, direct bhi toh karna hai.
loading...
So much for impartial reviews then! You liked the film because you are a. fida over the two lead actors b. like the chemistry between SRK/Kajol and their electrifying performances? The film is in TROUBLE if one is not such a massive fan of either?
It may come as a complete shock to many but not every single person is ga-ga over Kajol. Yes she has an amazing screen presence but her over-stated almost shouty acting is not to my taste.
Just a point. I have not seen the movie yet but I have a problem with the casting of Kajol as a hindu. The plot could have been slightly re-worked and she could have been a muslim as well as Rizwan. Why wasn’t she? The same for Kurbaan. Karan needs to be braver than he claims to be. If you believe in your “product” one needs to go with it wholeheartedly – and for that the lead couple should both have been muslims. To have them from different religions for this particular movie about the effects of terrorism does not make sense. But it does make commercial sense!
loading...
I agree with lot of your points. The melodrama by bringing in a Hindu and a Muslim together needs to be downplayed now. Well, I can only comment more after I have seen the movie, though!
loading...
I haven’t seen the movie but Kajol’s being Hindu has a point here as she blames Rizwan Khan for the attack on her kid. This much is clear from the promos.
P.S. I am not a fan. Just making a point.
loading...
I see your point! I missed that from the promo. Good call.
loading...
I get it that being of different religions created some problems after 9/11 but most asians and middle-eastern looking people – children included – were looked at suspiciously after that event – some were picked on and others even attacked.
Whether muslim or not we all felt the heat and scrutiny.
Having both the leads as muslims would have had a greater impact on the story of the effects of terrorism. The problems of being in a mixed religious marriage affected by terrorism was another story in itself. Then you add on the major autism aspect. This story seems to want to be many things.
loading...
This is the idea of secularism in Bollywood, now a days.
loading...
Give the guy a break folks. He’s mostly, err,.. Blogging ! Gotto watch the movie and decide for myself, SRK can be good when understated ( swades )
loading...
Oh Boy! I thought Khalid’s reviews are genuine, not biased. It doesn’t appear so. I don’t know about the movie, but this review, must-must see recommendation and request to support (is this not common for some films in India?) just because you like lead actor. Wow.
I cannot stop reading your reviews on PFC, but next time I will be ready with some expectations. May be the movie is good and lead pair acted well, but overall this is a frontbencher review. No rating.
loading...
@Rk,
You except Khalid’s review to be genuine.hahaha
loading...
very obvious expectation that this magical duo can never disappoint the their worldwide fans…Thanks for sharing Khalid Sir, as this yr has till date has given pathetic movies not even worth been watched…after a long wait..we r getting a gud movie to learn and be human..but seems few diplomatically sarcastic people just needs an excuse to let the confusion flow in…which is just not the mssg the movie gives to human race
loading...
Well, I also failed to understand that despite everything else being bad how come movie become a must-see just because SRK and Kajol.
I support that movie shouldn’t be blocked for political reasons, but there also I failed to understand one thing. If SRK believed that pak players should play in IPL why didnt he bid for them? Preaching others when not following yourself??
Let the movie come and let people decide how good the movie is.
loading...
I liked the movie a lot… Watch MNIK……..has its heart in the right place , even though the screenplay could have been much tighter……but embellished by SRK and Kajol’s performances. Music is appropriate for the movie ( not great ) and not a single song is lip-sync.
Please support the movie as it certainly has its merits ; and such films need to be made ( especially as its coming from a top-shot commercial film maker’s school of cinema )….and such issues need to be taken up in commercial cinema, so that the message reaches the masses and the classes
loading...
This is an article written in support of MNIK and against its attacks in Mumbai. It can’t be called as a review.Mr Khalid himself makes it clear at the end saying that he is proud of being a die hard SRK fan and we need to watch this movie just because there is lots of protests against it. And let me tell you Mr Khalid, just having SRK-Kajol in it does not make it a good movie. Make a good product like Chak De India and even SRK bashers will like it. This movie also might be good, I have not watched it, but the reasons given by you to watch it is very funny.
Last but not least, please stop writing biased reviews like these so that you don’t loose your followers (there is one more guy, Raja Sen of rediff, who has already lost it after giving 4 stars to OSO and 2 stars to 3I).
loading...
@Pradeep You are telling me you have never watched a movie for the NAME involved in the film. Like a Ray film for Satyajit, or scorsese film for martin. You cant be serious.
loading...
Don’t be serious! Do you want to compare SRK’s movies to Satyajith Ray/Scorsese ? While the latter are directors par excellence, SRK is a mere actor dude. If that was the case, I would have taken tickets for RGV Ki Aag 1st day 1st show(me a die hard Amitabh fan!) – but trust me, I have not watched it till date.I don’t go to any film just by any actors name. Directors are of course different.
I am just trying to question Khalid’s reco to watch it just coz its SRK-Kajol movie. That is BS!
loading...
@Pradeep
Ooops! Did I come across as a person comparing oranges to apples.
Your comment (just having SRK-Kajol in it does not make it a good movie)
suggested to me that movie should not be promoted/praised because it has got some XYZ star working.
I replace my examples of Ray & Scorsese to a film of Aamir or Devgan or Deniro or Clooney. Would you not consider watching a movie just because its got those people in it?
Hope that clears the air. if there was any.
loading...
even my viewpoint will remain the same even if u change ur misplaced examples…u can’t watch a movie just because of the actors…even the actors u hav named hav given trashy movies in the past…It is the director who matters in the end
loading...
I would watch a Clooney movie if I have no idea about the movie except that it stars Clooney. However, if I know a movie is BS, I won’t watch it just because it stars Clooney. From KM’s review, it seems like he says MNIK is mostly BS but watch it as it stars my favorite hero SRK and you need to support his latest releast.
loading...
Do you want me to re-iterate the same stuff again? I made it pretty clear that I don’t watch movies coz of actors (RGV Ki Aag was enough example I believe). Now why do you want to bring AK or AD or LD in between? My view does not change who ever actor he is. AK has given BS movies like Mangal Pandey, Mela, Mann etc and I don’t watch just by his name. Hope you clear your mind first and and then try to clear the air surrounding (read – understand my point of view and then comment on that)
loading...
Sorry, forgot to mention that my previous comment was a reply to @CV. Also @CV, you have mentioned that oranges are getting compared to apples.WTF, its you who have compared actors to directors and mentioned that you would go to a Satyajit Ray movie and similarly u would also go to SRK-Kajol movie. Dude, wake up! (by the by, I must confess Wake up Sid was a geniune attempt by KJ to produce something different)
loading...
Dude that same Raja Sen also gave Shah Rukh Khan starrer KANK 2 stars!!
loading...
@Akash Does that justifies his 4 star rating for OSO? What did that movie had? Other than Mind it
loading...
Well, I wud say it had entertainment. I immensely enjoyed the 1st half. Can’t say the same abt the 2nd half though. But may be he liked it till the end and hence the 4 stars. If he was biased then he wud have done the same with KANK, right? In fact, in KANK’s review he spitted fire against Shah Rukh. U can verify it here … http://www.rediff.com/movies/2006/aug/11kank.htm
See I am no fan of Raja Sen, what I m tryin 2 say is that ur point of argument over thr abt Raja Sen is kinda misplaced.
P.S. — Mind It was hilarious
loading...
Well its ultimately your choice of how you get entertained, but I just feel a popular reviewer should be consistent in the way he sees/reviews a movie. I just don’t understand the fact that when a guy got entertained by OSO, how come the same guy felt that 3I is worth just 2 stars? Wasn’t there entertainment factor in 3I? I just felt he is being biased. You can just to go to rediff message board and see the way people have trashed his reviews. But I agree that my argument over Raja Sen and 3I review is kinda misplaced in this forum, though I did’nt intend to take this Raja Sen topic so long. Have a nice weekend!
loading...
PFCians – WHY SO SERIOUS ? Khalid is a guest blogger , he is BLOGGING, and new media is different from old media. Here you can be biased, you can express your views… ! Express your angst against the movie, his writing style, debate his points , but if you thrash down the piece because its not ‘conforming’ to a standard review is no better than acting like the Sainiks ( freedom of speech, fundamental rights, related jazz )
loading...
First, sorry for the off-topic reply. I guess, you assumed wrong. Nobody is serious; they are just putting their thoughts on the article. And in the middle of the discussion you are making dead-end statements like, “the author is blogger, you can be biased”. Those are universal dead-end statements and everyone reading PFC aware of them. There are no standards for review and there are no standards for comments.
When an article is published for public view, the author also expects opinions on the content and that’s when we flood into the comments section. So, please tell us what you really think about the article, instead of trying to analyze the emotions of the others.
BTW, I haven’t seen you comments on the article itself so far. Also, please do not continue this thread as this is off-topic. Thanks.
loading...
Get a LIFE, Mr. Khalid. Just cos the film stars SRK and Kajol, doesn’t mean it good. I got to see the show on sunday, and trust me, had it been for any other actors, the movie would BOMB bigtime. Its outright stupid, and a mix of Fanaa and Kurbaan. Jst by showing Kajol a terrorist doesn’t mean the movie may do well. As for the hype created, thanks to SS, guess its all a part of marketing strategy.
This is a film for the international market, where it could earn a few $ € etc. In India, its not gonna last more than a week, unfortunately due to the fake hype.
KJo and SRK, why dont you guys take a break and think of something better.
loading...
Gr8 goin PFC.. i knew this will happen. This is d same person whose review we all followed till date. if he is biased towards SRK how many stars did he give to VEER ZARA and RNBDJ?
Grow up guys and stop bashing KJo and SRK otherwise u all will have your foot in mouth time by time.
loading...
Well at least Khalid is being honest and letting us know upfront that he is fanboy of SRK and Kajol. Now we know why he is always bashing other people’s movies.
So in reality the movie is worth only 2/5 star but he added 2 stars for his favorite jodi. He is saying basically the movie is below average but please overlook everything that is wrong and go swoon at SRK/Kajol. So much for his credibility as a “critic”.
Khalid is as bad as Taran who has given every KJO movie including Kaal a rating of 4/5 and if it has SRK than it is 4.5/5 because he just deserves that extra credit. LOL
Ain’t BW and the it’s entertainment/trade “journalists” wonderful? It is an eye opening experience for this westerner.
loading...
just came back from the movie. the movie is as emotionally manipulative, cringeworthy and very disappointing.
Brought back memories of the scene in KKKG where the jana gana man song is sung and everyone in the theatre is expected to stand.
every scene has been milked for maximum emotions.
couldnt expect more from the writing of shibani bathija after the classic writing in Fanaa and Kidnap.
This movie completes a trilogy of shoddy writing.
Karan first produces a shitty movie like Kurbaan which carelessly shows Muslims as horrible people who carry bombs in their purses and then directs this movie. I wish he would stop making such extremely opposite statements on religion and sticks to the kinda movies which he is good at (Mush)
Sounds like a big rant but i am seriously disappointed after watching the recent movies from the Karan Johar stable
loading...
i seriously wish people would stop making more movies on how 9/11 has changed the world and how it has affected Muslim and other religions
Come on guys, surely, there are more stories to make in this world
loading...
@Shrath I disagree! People should make more movies on post 9/11. However their motive should be more to bring back the lost love.
And my dear PFC fellas, review has always been a critics personal opiion. Never ever it should be written to please the public. Only becuse you dont like SRK,does not mean he should be bashed.
I love SRK more for his off screen life of a faithful husband ,dedicated father and a person with great sense of humour. I also like the aura he can create with his romantic side on-screen.
I belive it was SRK who gave India a new definition of love. Also i feel its those who are from parralel world of films hate SRK.
He shows off- Agreed. But i am a beliver of If-you-have-it-FLAUNT-it (Pam Anderson example). He is the pioneer of bridging the gap between media and bollywood. He brought the concept of advertising films by doing things before release in a gala manner so that it reaches everyone.
Only because he does over-the-top acting in 5/10 movies you will rate him as non-actor. And Aamir takes 3 years to amke a blunder like Mangal Pandey – he becomes great. RIDICULOUS heights of Pragmatism.
Again- this is just MY opinion.
loading...
CV,
Have you ever seen a decent movie made about 9/11?
I havent seen Khuda ke liye but i have seen yun hota toh kya hota, kurbaan, new york and MNIK
None of these movies had any conviction about them.
All of them seem to have been made to milk the 9/11 topic and to become a hit by hook or crook
loading...
sharath, do see khuda ke liye, it is miles better than the synthetic kurbaan and the sacharine mnik. it is genuine heartfelt and above all good cinema.
loading...
Karan johar cant come up with anything less than shit thats for certain and people wanting to watch such waste of time and writing reviews for such crap is altogether another paradox.
Yes i do agree with you about supporting the release of this film in Maharashtra not because of any sympathy towards SRK and johar or the people who want to watch it but just cause its undemocratic its not OK to ban Porn its not OK to ban this also.
loading...
@Harpy And people writing to bash the crap review of a crap film? Are they wasting time?
loading...
Dude i just poped in cos of the shiv sena issue and to support the screening of the movie. Ya i did do some bashing cos one cant help it. Agreed i lost some time on it also but just a over a minute nothing serious.
Cheerio.. enjoy the movie bro.. and watch it in Bombay.
loading...
loading...
While i believe that critics are only human and its perfectly ok to be a fanboy, what is not okay is to let it affect your work to this point. you have trashed almost everything in the film except for the performances of the lead pair and then given it four stars??!
In a film dealing with American reaction towards people with brown skin after 9/11 you say that the director’s judgement of human behaviour is weak, and yet you give it four stars? that makes no sense to me whatsoever.
However, i do believe that it is very important for this film to succeed, and succeed most of all in Mumbai–like a giant slap on the face of people involved in the Shiv Sena who seem bent on dividing our country. and its sad that few people can see that. All they want is a state for them to rule, they don’t care about the well being of anyone else, marathi manoos or no marathi manoos. Its a divide and rule policy and its sad to see that even some educated and “sensible” people are buying into it.
loading...
I think Khalid has played really safe here. In veiled words he has actually said, “avoid at all costs”, yet did not offend any bigwig in the industry. I will take my cue and stay away, not that I inteded to see a SRK movie directed by Karan Johar in any case. I had stopped doing that after seeing the first 15 minutes of Kuch Kuch Hota hai. Thanks Khalid Bhai.
loading...
SRK rocks, Kajol rocks … But does the film rock ?
loading...
KJ should stick to what he is good at – mushy romances, cheesy dialogues, hummable songs and slick visuals. Serious subjects like muslims as terrorists in the perceptiomn of the western world after 9/11 are not his piece of cheesecake.
loading...
while khalid has given dubious reasons why the movie should be watched, i have done a small write-up on why the movie should not be watched and i do feel that the movie should be boycotted by mumbaikars even if it were to release
loading...
Crazyrals, this shameless self promotion as mentioned in the write up at this link is going on for years. A heapful of lies are pedalled daily with the help of media. SRK’s powerful political connections make media dance to his tunes. Plus you have ‘unabahed die-hard’ fans like Khalid. So, that’s how the hoopla is created.
loading...
sorry guys, u may call me a hypocrite that even after giving ample reasons why i would not be watching the movie, i actually did :notsure:
.
and the only reason why i did was because i wanted to form my own opinion of the movie.
.
it was a laborious watch, really tiring and got to my nerves. here’s what i have to say about mnik
loading...
Why so serious about this sirjee. It’s not hypocrisy I believe. Man is not a machine who will always function in the same way in all the situations. The situations were such that you had to watch MNIK, you couldn’t help. It’s all right.
loading...
Shaan Khan — he who wrote a full-length review of the MNIK trailer — is nowhere to be seen.
Supaari Oz ne di thi, Yaatri ne, ya Satyendra Jha ne?
My guess — Oz.
loading...
Khalid had given Kuch kuch hota hai five stars. Hmm. But other Karan Johar “productions” all received scathing remarks. Again MNIK received four stars. Gad bad hai. Am convinced if Kurbaan starred SRK, that would have got one or 1.5 stars more. Khalid’s first movie was a muslim bro-sis victim story. Therefore a muslim topic and SRK combo gets atleast four stars from KM!
loading...
this is really the low point of pfc….its one thing if khalid does this…but its no great guns on your part to accuse him of being pro-faith about it….
there is no harm in a person liking a movie and expressing his opinion in a blog…i am sure we all have done it at some points in our lives out of sheer liking for a “star” be it amitabh or aamir or srk or deniro or a james bond for heavens sake…..
we dont go n catsrte ourselves for saying good things about liking a movie or an actor or just feeling good about it….lest not do the same to KM…
he has just asked you to watch mnik…listen to him if you want to and dont if you dont….i am sure you are intelligent to do so only if you want to…
loading...
and just to make things clear on this site where more than what is required is construed…i am not insinuating that KM is pro faith when it comes to rating movies :banginghead:
loading...
Yeah. Thot about it. U are right. Shouldnt have accused him of being pro-faith in his stars.
loading...
My bad that you are upset about this. BUt really what is the issue, if people here have labelled him of being pro-SRK, pro-KAjol… but if someone adds pro-faith. Whats the big issue about it.
.
To make matters clear, I have added that its the issue+star, which can get more than four stars from KM. It is clear that Kurbaan had the same faith topic, but KM wasnt biased there, because it didnt star SRK.
.
And I aint pulling anything out of thin air. Someone making his first film on the topic has to be totally so much attached towards it. And theres nothing wrong with that. Just that I accuse him of being biased about it. Think @ it. The discussion need not go further. We can both can peacefully hold on to our own opinions.
loading...
KM analyses movies and actors. I have analysed his motives behind ratings and opinions. i am sure you are intelligent to understand that, only if you want to
loading...
my whole contention is that let us not insinuate his inclination/ non-inclination to make faith a parameter in making/ grading movies….
yes, if he is pro-faith as you seem to have labelled him then i do not see if that really is an issue in the first place….if he makes faith based movies then so be it…we would all like to believe that he is making movies that he believes in or is passionate about (considering that arent exactly the material which will set the box office on fire each time)….if he wants to showcase a particular faith (in this case his own) there is no harm in it….
the harm lies in linking his affinity to a faith and his very obvious liking for a particular star (incidentally of the same faith) and saying that there is a bias…
there is no limit to the analysis that our brain can perform, the deductions, the inferences that we can draw from a particular action (in this those of KM) but such stuff make us only more paranoid and cynical and nothing else…
you want to criticize KM – do so…u wanna trash the movie be my guest but lets not draw unnecessary inferences which have nothing to do with the creative dialogue this site offers…there are enough biases already…lets not think of newer ones…atleast not in a place where people are genuinely passionate about the art of movies….
loading...
Hmm well K3G got a 5 star one, and KANK too got high ratings. And yes even Kaal, Dostana too got high ratings from the venerable Khalid Miya. Only for Kurbaan review, he was pissed off with KJo, pata nahin kya hua uske aur KJo ke beech mein.
loading...
@Ratnakar: Probably I remember, correct me if I am wrong, what happened in Kurbaan, Khalid saab was upset coz his name was used, and he didn’t like the way a particular religion was portrayed.
loading...
I have LOST FAITH from PFC.. They just Bash SRK-Kjo.. widout Any Reason..
loading...
Nop, they dont. If they do, they do it for a reason, and they dont spare anybody. Tarantino is an exception though
loading...
it would help if you make valid objections to the criticism than shouting from roof top that you have lost faith!
loading...
Its the readers, that is WE, who make Khalid write such biased reviews. When he wrote something sensible, last couple of reviews, nobody commented and he had to come forward and had to provoke people to comment on his reviews. Pity!
This time Khalid decided to write something, something far from a good review, so that everybody, including me, comes and comments here. You won Khalid Saab. You are getting comments now. Its like if you can not write so good that people acknowledge you, write something so biased that people are forced to comment
By the way, I will watch MNIK, not because of this review but because of SRK’s stand against Sena. This guy showed guts by not apologizing to goons.
loading...
Shiv Sena is curbing the freedom of makers and Film makers are curbing the freedom of critics. Case in point- no Raja Sen review on Rediff.
Everyone in India likes to play god. Kuch nahi ho sakta is desh ka

Reminds me of a line from Agneepath
“Kehne ko yeh shehar, sirf kehne ko, magar idhar jungle ka kannon chalta hai…..Yahan pe har taqakwar apne se kamzoor ko maar kar jeeta hai”
loading...
Thanks for bringing in agneepath in this….ironically that too came from dharma’s….
meanwhile keep the srk-kjo bashing on…its been there for years…they are going from strength to strength and so are you!

Thanks for telling what we all thought was true, Khalid, Thanks, but no thanks, BYE to ur reviews.

To all the people complaining about this review: Why don’t you ignore the stars for this film and read the substance in it. The stars are just 3 words or something. Why is the star system so important in the first place? It’s like the sales negotiation: “4 star nahin mangta hai, theek theek lagao na. chalo tumhara nahin mera nahin 2 star lagao.” Is this what has cinema come to?? KM is one of oldest reviewer s of India; he started out when some of us haven’t even seen what a film looks like. At his stature if he has the balls to say it out loud that he is a fan boy and he is giving the extra two stars for them and wants us to support the cause of cinema, why not let him have fun??? Cut some slack. PFC is an independent forum and respects independent voice; this is not a manipulated system. So if we don’t allow free speech then what will be the difference between us and the people who are stopping the film? Why are you killing an old man’s freedom of expression? There are no corporate machines that run the show and he feels that this is an independent forum where he can freely write what he wants. Let it be. And yes, why dont we just get over the 5 stars for KKKG or KKHH??Every review of his has this comment like a “cynicism check mark” being maintained. If even if we consider it was a mistake, how many times have we all committed mistakes in life, fudged something or the other. No one is “dudh-ka-dhula” here. Also while we discuss this review, he clearly tells you that the film may not be that good but the performances are. I for one got convinced that this film is not for me by reading this review. Khalid is aware that this could happen to the readers of this review. If he was to really manipulate and give a proper biased review, then he would have sugar coated every frame of the film. He is being honest, lets respect someone’s individuality and discuss cinema and not individual biases. It’s like we’re cutting K’s finger for smoking, shutting all channels of expression. If you and I don’t agree with it, fine! Big deal! Nothing is absolute anyway, it’s all relative perceptions. You don’t have to agree. But don’t suppress free speech which is the spirit of this place. And yes, I am done now. Bash me with your comments.

Neeraj, Who is preventing KM from expressing his views? Other than telling his review sucks, we can do nothing much else. Sure if KM has the “FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION” to write what he pleases, then as an end reader i also have the “FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION” to say “I FELT THIS SUCKS”. Now i hope i at least have that freedom.
loading...
No, you dont. In India no body but some political jokers have the right to freedom of speech
loading...
Bang on target….very well said…..
loading...
huh? no one here seems to be taking KM’s freedom of speech away. But pointing out the hypocrisy in his speech or pointing out the flaws in his argument is perfectly within the rights of the readers of PFC as well. You make it sound like PFC is for those who blog on it alone and the readers have to silently take whatever c**p is dished out.
loading...
Telling some 1 his review is Bad= Suppression of Freedom of Expression??? Come on Neeraj did not expect this kind of Off the Cuff remark from you.
As a site we have been founded on the principles of honest criticism and freedom of expression, and with due respect, just coz it s KM, why should we overlook it.
This is the same site, where Anurag Kashyap is questioned about his movies, and while at times it might seem negative, that is what freedom of expression is about.
loading...
Neeraj – every second comment of yours is always talking about FREEDOM of EXPRESSION. I suggest you go back and read your own comments on this site. You are always like, “I hate your piece but respect your freedom of expression” or “I love your piece and how you have used the freedom of expression.” Are you the new age messiah of our freedom? Then you should be out there opposing Sainiks, not posting here. All you are doing is curbing OUR FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION.
loading...
Relax bro.. did anyone suggest that khalid should be stopped from writing reviews… If so thats also perfectly within freedom of expression.
loading...
“At his stature if he has the balls to say it out loud that he is a fan boy and he is giving the extra two stars for them and wants us to support the cause of cinema, why not let him have fun???”
Just one question, would you be as lenient, if it was one of the Level 2 authors doing the same.
loading...
Wow! On the same site I have seen so many comments and even some articles where people with pre medidated minds were already declared that the movie is going to be flop citing absurd reasons like karan can not handle realistic subjects, SRK cannot act. Even when Kalid gave 3 star rating for Striker someone in comments said that it is the highest rating that Khalid had given. But now he had given 4 star for MNIK. All these stupid people who commented against Karan and SRK all these day noe remember one point that is “Never underestimate anyone on any day”.
Hats off to Karan,SRK and Kajol.
loading...
PFC was founded on the very principles that it could provide a platform for movie makers and audiences to come together, have discussions, generate ideas. It was the place where the audiences could question the movie makers, critics, writers on their work. That is the very idea on which this entire site rests. When we feel what some one has written, is not up to the expectations, we have every right to voice our objections. If Khalid Mohd has the right to tear apart what he feels is a lousy movie, then he should be prepared for the fact that readers have the right to question him on his reviewers.
80% of the people who comment on this site, are those who have a knowledge of movies, have watched movies, read reviews from across the globe. Please don’t insult our intelligence, by saying we are cynical and all. This same “CYNICAL” public appreciated KM’s articles on the older generation of actors. So its not like we spend all the time sharpening our Knives, ready to pounce on a poor old hapless man.

Bhai Ratnakar What are we talking about here?
How many of us have watched this movie? Everyone seems to have issues with 4 star rating becuse KM has confessed he is a fan of SRK. There are many in PFC who are fan of Anurag Kashyap and think it is blasphemous to give his movies anything less than 5 stars….KM gave 5 stars to Dev D and it was KM’s kind of comeback in PFC. No one had any objections to it. people went ga ga over No Smoking / Aamir and Oye Lucky Lucky Oye in PFC.
Last week there was much hue and cry over one reviewer who was not so kind for Ishqia.
So in short PFC also has biased towards certain kinds of cinema and filmmakers.
I could have understood people getting upset after watching the movie but before watching it saying all bad things for KM is a bit too much…
And I don’t think anyone who has a sense of script and screenplay and have seen KANK and fanaa would expect Shibani Bhatija to give us a classic. And KJO who also happened to be a producer of Kurbaan can’t be trusted for being authentic and hard hitting.
loading...
Kaminey, a VB film was soundly trashed at PFC when professional critics were praising it to heavens..So I don’t get it what bias u are talking about..
loading...
Nauman No Smoking had it’s share of negative reviews on PFC, and so did VB’s Kaminey, and even OLLO, Sankat City.
The issues is this, for a major part of the review you have trashed it, and end of it, you say watch it only for the lead pair, and then a PS note of what a fan of mine.
Fair enuf, but why was this leeway not given for Kurbaan? Why was this kind of tolerant attitude, not shown for London Dreams, which for all it’s flaws, had good performances from both Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan?
loading...
The issue with KM is that he tends to bring in his own personal biases every time into the review. And that is a fact.
loading...
Ratnakar,
A review itself is a personal point of view. How can it be a generalized one. I feel there is no wrong in giving high rating because of the actor in a movie. If a good actor can make an average movie into a excellent watch then why cant the movie can get an excellent rating instead of average one beacuse its the actor who made the difference. Like the example I said in one of the comments – Dev D with Abhay always better watch and earn better rating(however good the movie can be) than Dev D with Himesh. So here the difference is just an actor. So I this case will you say the reviewer is biased to Abhay?
loading...
Dudee, Most of KM’s earlier reviews had this common line “X’s performance is excellent, you just wished the movie was as good” or “X & Y are brilliant, the movie is not”. And none of them received any 4 star ratings.
Also if you see the reviews of Dev D & Abhay, give me the link to a single review that says “Dev D movie is not great, but i am giving 4 stars just coz of Abhay & Mahie”.
loading...
I have only comment which I am going to repeat “To all the people complaining about this review: Why don’t you ignore the stars for this film and read the substance in it. The stars are just 3 words or something. Why is the star system so important in the first place? It’s like the sales negotiation: “4 star nahin mangta hai, theek theek lagao na. chalo tumhara nahin mera nahin 2 star lagao.”” My point is that you guys read the review and not the stars. Now if the review sucks devoid of the stars, then lets tell him what we didnt like. I am all for it.
And yes we do have the right to comment but some civic sense in comments would be good. I am not referring to you guys but when I saw the post earlier there were some really obnoxious comments which were more personal and not about the review or the film.
loading...
Just end this with one argument when some 1 clearly says at the end of the review, he is willing to overlook all the defects in the movie, just for the sake of the Lead Actor, How seriously u expect me to take?
I mean if i were to write, that Singh is King sucks, but its ok to watch it, since Akshay Kumar rocks, would any one really take it seriously?
loading...
That’s what almost everyone has done, Neeraj. If it’s getting obnoxious, the author has started it.
loading...
why should anyone ignore the stars if the reviewer hasn’t. he gave them for a reason, right? isn’t the number of stars supposed to denote the quality of the film as a whole. they are there for a reason and a critic should not make a mockery of them.
loading...
Well its very clear that Khalid Saab is trying to tease all of us by openly making his intentions clear and asking us to confront him if we feel so.Nothing wrong in him taking such a stance or nothing wrong in people here saying that they didnt like the post either. But lets calm down a bit and not get so provoked easily. criticism is fine as long as its constructive and I’m sure even Khalid Saab would agree to it!!!
loading...
what if srk had accepted no smoking.then u would have wrote a positive review about that movie, khalid?
loading...
All the people in PFC are so hypocratic that they could not able to acept the fact that the movie is good. All who are opposing Kahlids review had not even seen the movie so I dont understand how come they all saying that the review is bad? As far as I understand the point that Khalid making is SRK and Kajol elevated the movie and he liked it more because of them. Lets say in Dev D instead of Abhay if Himesh acted as lead will it be as sucessfull both critically and commercially as it was? A big NO all those reviewers who gave good ratings for Dev D will definetly would have given worst rating if it is acted by Himesh. So my point is you cant seperate an actor from a movie and review it. It s the film as a whole package a person is reviewing. In that he can highlight whatever things he like. The same Khalid (declared himself as SRK fan) had given bad reviews for SRK films in the past. But this time he felt film is good and he said so.
loading...
Raju- lets not generalise it this way.Its not that all people @ PFC are against SRK or MNIK.As with any post over here or elsewhere there will be people liking it and not liking it as well.As for the movie itself yes most of us are yet to watch it and its too early to say the movie is good or bad without really getting a feel by oneself. From my side I’ll be watching it tonite and if I like it I’ll be frank in admitting it.

the day a critic turns into a fan he can never be objective.i also believe critics should never hobnob with the people they write about. At one time anything kamalhassan did was great acting for khalid. he fell out with him and every performance was self indulgent and narcissistic.a critic should stop writing when his personal equation with stars influencees his reviews. khalid should have stopped long back!

Isn’t 9/11 passe’ in 2011?
Since 2001, hasn’t india got its own share of ugly wounds to parade/display and milk for whatever humanity/political correctness they’re worth ? Will KJo ever dare to make a film on Gujarat(Firaaq) or 26/11?
Why is he still pandering to the NRI audience? The answer perhaps lies in the relative ease of exposition of indian emotions when set in a foreign land.
loading...
Ranjeet, Overseas markets is where the money is. Followed by multiplex audiences in Metro cities who love to have their films set in US and UK. ‘True Indians’ or the masses of India actually don’t count for K-Jo-Shahrukh and co. How would you win fans in Germany and Malaysia if you make films that cater to single screen audience in India?
loading...
Get real guys! There is no need to look at the current nautanki as an assault on freedom of expression etc. SRK doesn’t need your support. He already has the support of the ruling party. There was no way, they were going to lose the long weekend business. Predictably, Govt. is suddenly in control of things and the film has released safely. Some more nautanki may follow but the job is done. Film is a hit no matter how shitty it may be.
loading...
what a shameless review. by all means recommend the movie if you are a fan of the actor. but then judge the movie on its own merit. don’t give it four stars then. four stars out of five has to mean it’s a brilliant film, right. isn’t this the same reviewer who gave ‘kabhi khushi…’ five stars. maybe KM should take a leaf out of ebert’s ‘fanboy’ review of ‘is anybody there?’ starring michael caine. what a brutally honest review. which is why ebert is ebert. and check out his star rating.
loading...
“PS: Am an unabashed SRK fan…and supremely proud of it. No one else compares to him today…” – I would beg to differ… just would want to refer a scene in the film “Billu Barber” (not a gr8 film.. in fact quite average) .. look at how Irfan Khan rips apart Shahrukh in the climactic sequence… Shahrukh khan is a star… and yes we love him for that… but if you want moments of pure acting please look into real actors.. and I know that Mr. Mohammed is well aware of who they are.
loading...
somebody should stop Karan from making movies about such serious topics. He only ends up making a mockery of serious issues
loading...
what is the purpose of star system?..I assume that 4 stars means a brilliant film..This guy says that film is BS, but because of excellant acting of lead actors, film deserves 4 stars, what type of logic is that?..
loading...
Perhaps he cant say openly that the movie is BS
He would be crucified by the Hindi Film industry if he makes such a statement.
Taran Adarsh said that this movie is the best movie which Shahrukh and Kajol ever have acted in together
Surely, he must have been kidding.
loading...
When has Adarsh been serious? At least not for me, though he thinks otherwise?

Well Sharath, see a film first before giving your wise comments. One can otherwise have one’s foot in the mouth.
loading...
Subhasish,
What makes you feel I haven’t seen the movie?
I saw the movie last night.
You should not assume that someone has not seen the movie.
Else you would end up with your foot as well as somebody else’s foot in your mouth
loading...
It’s not necessary to watch the movie before making any comment about the review. They are talking about the intention of the critic, film may be good may be bad but this review is definitely biased and motivates not to watch at least for his sake….One more thing neither Shahrukh is a very great actor nor Karan is a great director, u cant go for a movie just coz Karan made it or
Sharukh acted in it. So a viewer values a review a lot to make his or her mind but now yes u have to open ur eyes before going for any review. I mus say that KM always wrote biased review, u find this when u take a overview and look back to his reviews.
We are not ready to watch a movie coz Shiv Sena opposing it, coz Shahrukh acted in or KM appreciated it.
If anyone says that for the name of a director a film can be watched, he is absolutely true. U can find even weak films of master directors worth watching like Hrishikesh Mukharjee, Vijay anand, Truffaut, Ray, Shantaram but some of superhit films of actor are horrible to watch like Sharukh’s OSO which was given 5 stars by KM
loading...
Four stars for two outstanding performances. What a careless and biased piece of writing. Seriously WTF???
) is reason enough to worry.
And finally KM acccepts that he is an unababshed fan of SRK. Thts the reason why he has always been raving about most of SRK’s shitty movies. Or else who the hell would give 5 stars to K3G??
I cant say though whether MNIK is good or bad as i am yet to see it but might end up watching by end of the week. But the story, screenplay by Shibani Bhatija (Kidnap,Fanaa,Dhoom 2,KANK lol

Shiabni’s stroy must make u worried before watching with her horrible record. As far as SRK’s acting is concerned it is true that he is a director’s actor and acted well when worked with keeping his star status away like best in Swadesh so far, also in Dil Se and Chak de

haan Rab ne Bana di jJodi satyam Sharukham Sundaram,u can trace his history he is biased :banginghead:

This is possibly that rare time, it appears, that the lead actor of this film has pushed himself to perform a role, rather than just play himself (Swades and Chak De India come to mind as distant second and third exceptions).
It doesn’t speak too well for a career of about 60 films over nearly two decades. Habit formations are strong. It’s hard to perceive Shah Rukh Khan as a character. More losses of inhibition such as this could find this leading man a softer spot in Hindi cinema history. Until now, he’s likely to be recalled as a unique super-star, not an actor – a combination of the two being reserved for Amitabh Bachchan, and thereafter Aamir Khan alone.
well done mayank shekhar

Saw the movie, it kept me engaged and I could have a connect with it.So while its not a flawless movie, it works reasonably and to a large extent its due to SRK who I felt carried off his role pretty well.Kajol in her limited time was ok too.Now this is strictly my personal view of the film and not everybody has to agree to the same.Watch it and figure out whether you like it or not.
loading...
It is a known and accepted fact that portraying disabled people and working on tragic scenes is far far easier than playing a normal chap in a comic scene. So stop touting this as “carried off his role pretty well”. Try doing a normal comic Amitabh act (a la Amar Akbar Anthony) or any straigt faced Govinda act, and the gent in question has no credentials whatsoever.
I respect your view Sethu but put your hand on your heart and ask yourself, is this a gem. and answer will be NO.
loading...
@ Fan- ” It is a known and accepted fact that portraying disabled people and working on tragic scenes is far far easier than playing a normal chap in a comic scene.” says who? is it mentioned in any acting manual or have any of the acting gurus highlighted this?
But having said that I would agree that performing comedy is certainly not an easy task. But having said that dont you think its not fair to talk about all that while talking about MNIK.I never said MNIK is a gem- just said its an engaging movie and I felt SRK did well.Lets not get into a SRK vs any other actor debate over here.
loading...
Just your single remark “says who” says it all about your knowledge on acting. Try it yourself, in isolation. And you will agree that you can emote a tragic scene much easily compared to a comic.
And BTW I am not engaging in shahrukh v/s other actor debate. my point is that he/kjo can only dole out such mediocre hurt tugging stuff made of candy floss, which anybody else can also do. that does not qualify them to be engaging film makers.
loading...
The point was never about one’s knowledge about acting- we can debate that on a seperate platform. Are we doing an apples to apples comparison here?Is MNIK a comedy film?If yes I can understand if you are saying SRK cant be as good as AB or Govinda in comedy or that KJO cannot make as good a comedy entertainer like a Manmohan Desai or a David Dhawan. You haven’t liked the movie due to some hidden prejudice and instead of giving logical reasons for not liking it, you are trying to make gargantuan statements.I guess you just cannot stand the kind of response the movie is generating.
loading...
et tu, sethu! the movie was embarrassing to say the least. it was also too verbose and skewed and flawed beyond the pale of cinematic licence. someone called it a cringefest and i agree.performances are only part of a movie, however good, bad or ugly.you don’t judge a movie on acting alone.
loading...
“MY NAME IS KHAN” -Brillant Film from Karan Johar.Hats off for taking such a subject & doing great justice to the film.Hope people stop judging his films before hand after watching this one. Kajol at her best, the only one who could do the part to perfection. The rest of the cast for such gr8 performance & the crew.
Last but not the least Rizwan khan(Shahrukh Khan)any word of praise is too small for this Super Performance from him. Another feather in the cap for SRK. Completely into the skin of the character throughout. Awesome, Brillant, Amazing are just not the words. dare to say that SRK is only a superstar after watching this film.

I need a pain killer to watch MNIK
I entered the movie hall to see another Sharukh film and came out seeing a worst art film on the issue of terrorism.
When I go to see a movie my hero is either a lover boy who is fit and fine and is liked by thousands and loved by hundreds, or a Rambo who fights out all the devils to become the ultimate winner at the end of the movie.
To take a break from the routines I watch movies for a clean entertainment and not for taking any message without any entertainment into it. So we had best of the messages in Amir khan movies like Tare Zameen Par and the latest one ‘3 Idiots’ on the flaws in education system.
And do I really need to waste my time in watching a movie to just have a tour of American cities. No way. My excitement fizzled out in the initial 15 minutes and as I could not hold on till the end I left the theatre at intervel. First thing I could have was a strong dose of pain killer.
First day first show. With Sharukh and Kajol in the movie I thought that it is going to be another good love story like their old hits. But I was disgusted. The hero of the film is a patient of Asperger’s Syndrome through out the movie. I don’t know whether the syndrome can be removed from the DNA or no. But then all through the movie Sharukh goes on moving like a pendulum.
And after coming out of the movie hall and after consuming a pain killer, I gave another thought to the ongoing controversy. Was it really a political controversy or a stunt? Pakistani players were rejected in the IPL team selection long back after which number of people had openly marked their displeasure including one of the team owners also. Then why Sharukh had to go public making statements about the Pakistani player’s inclusion right at the time of the release of the movie?
Everyone got swayed to make a box office hit a movie which is not worth seeing. Now all the people will flock to theatres to watch this worst made movie and come out disgusted. This is the best example of taking advantage of the local situations and holding the government machinery, political parties and ultimately people to ransom only to make profits out of even bad situations. Everyone was out on the street to make a hit of ‘C’ grade movie.
It is now time to sit together and count on who is the ultimate winner and looser.
Sharukh Khan need to learn some lessons from another ‘Khan’ on how to make a stunt and not even make the pinch feel to the viewers and common man.
loading...
@ Deepak its very clear you are an Aamir fan and you don’t like SRK.I have no problems with that at all.
But you say ” With Sharukh and Kajol in the movie I thought that it is going to be another good love story like their old hits. But I was disgusted. The hero of the film is a patient of Asperger’s Syndrome through out the movie.”
Well the whole world knew what the movie was about and if you didnt know it, who’s @ fault here?
“So we had best of the messages in Amir khan movies like Tare Zameen Par and the latest one ‘3 Idiots’ on the flaws in education system. ”
I can debate this but then lets not make it an Aamir Vs SRK war over here.
“Pakistani players were rejected in the IPL team selection long back after which number of people had openly marked their displeasure including one of the team owners also. Then why Sharukh had to go public making statements about the Pakistani player’s inclusion right at the time of the release of the movie?”
Do you have any idea about the controversy and what SRK said and when he said it?If you dont know please- check it out before making blanket statements like these.
Its ok if you didnt like the movie- after all no movie can please everyone.I would have been happy if you gave some solid reasons for not liking the movie. But whatever you have said – doesn’t make sense, not to me atleast.
loading...
Sarcasm anyone? Please please please!
Nice one Deepak. Don’t agree with what you have written, but loved your style!

Doesn’t make sense to Me too… Kuch bhi likha hai saab aapne… Ek toh banda seena taan ke khada hai in shiv sainiko ke saamne aur aap keh rahe ho ki publicity stunt hai … Kabhi INTEGRITY naam ka shabd suna hai ? SRK is a produer of the movie too and the business would have suffered 25 crore rs setback had not the movie gotten released yesterday… And yes, this movie was a LOVE STORY at its heart with 9/11 as just a backdrop but you couldnt get that…and it was way far better than 3 idiots which was made to show only that Aamir could look young at 42 too… Most of the ppl at PFC share the feeling that 3 idiots was not a GENUINE movie.. It was a series of cleverly written and lifted jokes. And they refused to give credit to the poor Chetan Bhagat.. Thats bad. Not good not good…

SRK is a produer of the movie too and the business would have suffered 25 crore rs setback had not the movie gotten released yesterday ‘
bhai jan lekin movie to release ho hi gayi na .. exact date ko.(publicity muft) daal me kuchh to kala hai. Water(film ) ka bhi oppose hua tha aur at last shooting sri lanka me karni padi. fana ( disaster) ko gujrat me ban kiya gaya tha lekin aisa nahi ki last moment ko ban remove kar diya gaya. Integrity ka pata to tab chalta jab movie mumbai me release nahi ho pati.puri controversy WWE ki tarah lag rahi thi. mera ek dost 500 rs ki bet haar gaya mujhse isi chakar me :yahoo:
loading...
i don’t see why just because the acting might be good and the rest of the movie a disaster, the movie is rated 4! if that were the case so many other movies deserve a lot more than they’ve been rated before.. and vice versa!
loading...
just wanted to add though, i don’t see why critics shouldn’t be biased? i mean, seriously, do we expect any critic to be unbiased? is that even a possibility? do we expect ourselves to be unbiased when we review movies? so lets begin from the premise that it neutrality an impossibility… and then proceed to comment on his review..
loading...
For once in my life… I will go with KM this time … He is bang on this time … and the review is TOTALLY Unbiased .. Trust me guys… This is SRK’s Best Performance till date… I am proud of being a SRK fan… I was so overwhelmed with his performance … I went to the movie with Shibani Bathija’s(Fanaa, Kidnap) track record in mind thinking that it will be another New York or Fanaa or Karna johar’s usual stuff …I was completely hoping that this movie will be the death blow for SRK(he has not done anything remarkable after Chak de, films like Billu , OSO, DMG have been so damaging to his repute) and he will lose it all to Aamir khan… But my my … What a come back…What a beautiful screenplay .. Such witty dialogues that u never expect from a Karan Johar movie … Beautifully shot…. Extremely simple yet Superbly heartwrenching … For the entire first half I was in a state of shock and disbelief that this film is a K-Jo movie… And it is indeed ironical that Shiv Sena is protesting against this movie … Go and watch it… Its NOT an SRK Karan Johar movie… Its a movie with a heart and not at all pretentious… Believe me guys … I am on PFC for past 3 years following each and every article .. All of you will love this movie …I bet…
P.S. – I am a die hard SRK fan as well but the above comment has nothing to do with it.
loading...
beautiful screenplay?
are you serious?
i am wondering if they are showing a different movie everywhere else than the one i saw in the theatre
loading...
Yes Sharath, I am serious.. The first half has brilliantly interwoven the 3(Rizwan’s present, past and bachpan) stories together…Jitna jaroori tha utna hi dikhaya hai aur ekdum sahi dhang se dikhaya hai.. Even the songs were picturised beautifully which were able to hide the shallowness of the lyrics(K Jo should have stuck to Javed saab)… The second half, I admit, loses the grip for a while and gets a bit cliched.. but overall it is worthy of an appreciation(Bowled over by the “Wo shaitan tha” wala scene… SRK throws stones on Arif Zakaria like they do in Makka Madina… Brilliant touch)… and trust me, I went to the movie with a strong belief that it would be another crappy mushy love story by K Jo but I was stumped by it…
And no matter how much bashing this movie gets by the intellectual nitpickers here at PFC … I will stand by it.
loading...
Dude- you didnt like the movie- thats fine. You’ve anyways been hopping all over the place conveying the same.So if someone else says that he/she has liked the movie, whats your problem?Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion on a movie.A movie is a piece of art and it may appeal to some and may not appeal to some.So you didnt like MNIK while Avi seems to have liked it.Understand that you cannot force others to accept your viewpoint even if you wish to.

Sethu,
U dont understand it. U dont understand the expectations with which i went to see this movie.
I braved a very cold windy night and went to watch kurbaan and MNIK on thursday night itself.
I even liked KANK. i am just getting pissed off with Karan for taking serious topics and treating them in such a childish manner.
I am not forcing anyone to accept my viewpoint but i am just surprised that there is such a majority of people who liked the movie.
Just wondering if there is anything wrong with myself

Sharath,
Nothing wrong with yourself dude.Even I didnt like Kurbaan one bit while I kind of liked MNIK.Even with 3I while majority liked it, there were still lot many who didn’t like it.So I guess thats the beauty of cinema- lot of unpredictability, whatever be the movie

ONLY A NON-OBSERVER WHO HAS NOT CONDUCTED ANY STUDY OF ACTING PYROTECHNICS CAN SAY THAT NO ONE ELSE COMPARES TO SRK TODAY. THERE ARE COUNTLESS ACTORS “INFINITELY SUPERIOR” TO HIM
loading...
I second you on this buddy… but this time SRK has done something which was really unimaginable for even a fan of his.. Hope you have watched the movie before posting this comment, if you haven’t you might want to change your opinion later.

SRK’s performance is like “Simple Jack” in Tropic Thunder…this guy surely doe’nt know anything about subtlety..hits on our heads with a hammer with his oh-look-at-me-i-m-disabled act

Saala Tom Hanks kare to chamtkaar… Shahrukh ar de to Balatkaar … Hadd hai yaar … Movie kharab hai wo bolo toh ek baar maan bhi le par SRK ne acting kharab ki hai … Pleaaaaase, bhagwan ke liye, ye to mat bolo …

Sorry ! MNIK…is slow ,boring , monotonous , hyped up and jarring with repeatative dialogues .
loading...
MNIK is just another crappy movie from KJ. He should be banned form directing. Just cliche’s. Not recommended at all!!!!
loading...
MNIk….average film…would rate it two stars …that is being generous . Why everyone is going ga ga over it …beats me !

Hi Khaled, there have been some occasions when people on PFC have openly criticised u and I felt bad about it. But I guess, u deserve all that criticism when u point out so many flaws and yet go on to give it a four star rating. Will it be ok for u if people critise u for ur movie or ur reviews and add a line at the end that says, “PS: I hate u unabashedly… and supremely proud of it?”
loading...
I loved the movie. It definitely deserves 3 and half stars if not 4.
My only issue – is that it dragged a bit in the second half.( It should have been trimmed by atleast 15 mins)
Its among SRK’s finest performance – gr8 stuff

When someone openly admits his bias for certain stars then i feel he should retire as a critic…By writing this khalid has actually made mockery of his review himself….

Someone wise said what is in a name, well for the retarded a name matters more than any other aspect of human condition as here Karan Johar indulges in an atrocious abuse of asperser’s syndrome, which is an adult form of autism, and the autistic hero is khan, playing a bright genius who cannot decide whether he is schizoid or suffering from attention deficit disorder with hyperactive syndrome, or maybe both as well as an ego the size of mount Everest.
The movie of course is perceived as a pro Muslim sado masochistic propaganda about the abuse of Muslims post 9/11 and islamophobia in the most divisively vulgar and excessive display of exaggerated emotion that is not even worth labeling as an emotion itself.
This is crass vulgar absurdist cinema with every cliché thrown in from Hijab wearing Muslim women being assaulted physically in work places to young kids being brutally murdered in daylight in school soccer grounds where all the Americans are still shown as righteous angels, as the people who commit the brutal acts are all faceless and nameless, maybe because the movie is obsessed by the name Khan itself so there is no space for any other acronym.
Khan of course is an autistic genius who wants to meet Mr. Bush to proclaim he is not a terrorist and thus we get on a misguided bus tour of America where we end up in Georgia for some geographical logic that only Karan Johar can divulge in his wisdom.
Meanwhile Khan has virtually suffered every indignity and given every Islamic sermon, as a holy Muslim saint (and he suffers from autism), that it is possible to give in a lifetime on this American tour, the script indulges in every blunder from distorting autism to abolishing the Abrahamic legend of Ishmael from the scriptures, to exposing the secret cells of al-Qaeda in the most astonishing miracle that even FBI/CIA has failed to accomplish, and I felt sorry to see Shahrukh being exploited in this caricature of Hoffman and Sean Penn, by a meandering amateur called Johar, who even borrowed the title from-I AM SAM.
Shahrukh Khan must be employed to catch Osama and Mullah Omar, along with Johar, as who else can eradicate Al-Qaeda and Taliban but this autistic duo.
Kajol as the marauding Hindu matriarch-Mandira for some mysterious reason marries an autistic Muslim though she has a teenage son, and behaves totally hysterically and is made up to look like a mockery with her atrocious makeup and over wrought contorted facial tics.
I think the whole cast suffered from Gilles de la tourette syndrome as the dialogues and visuals and the pretentious mannerisms and amateurish dialogue delivery was truly demonic, and than the nightmare arrived where khan landed in Georgia in a pastoral Christian paradise where all the African community sang in Urdu and English in a church in a choir and all the black American marines martyred in Iraq seem to be from this village described as inhabited by 1200 people and 10000 cows as if it was Farmville itself.
Unfortunately this town falls is in the eye of the hurricane Katrina and only the autistic Khan can save the neglected exploited afro Americans, as the American media and regime are only hunting khan while he is chasing the hurricane.
If I was Khan I would pledge never again to work with a man called Karan Johar but of course that is a free choice to avail and this is ‘kangaroo cinema’ at it’s most indulgent and excessive worst, which is totally misdirected except for scenes between the younger khan and his mother who gives the only good performance as an ordinary Indian Muslim mother, who has to rear an undiagnosed autistic child.
Khan mysteriously wears designer jeans in India and than suddenly appears in a salwar kameez at a memorial service held for 9/11 victims loudly chanting surah fateha, which almost made me apoplectic with laughter, and denoting zakat to the cause of the poor firefighters in a huge Islamic blunder.
The fact that Shahrukh was called Karan till recently in every Bolly romcom reflects how desperate and depressed they are to cash in on a crucial religious angle where nothing is spared as sacred or sane, by naming him as KHAN in this atrocious act of sadomasochistic charade, and which is much better presented in the Pakistani flick on the same theme-Khuda Ke Liye.
The fact one obese Afro-American character is called Mama Jenny from Wilhelmina Georgia, which falls on the route from Frisco to Washington D.C. is enough to describe this melodramatic folly by the biggest moron in Mumbai, where a Hindu American schoolboy boy is victimised, simply because his Hindu mother is married to a man named khan by middle class Americans, in 2008 for mysterious reasons that left me dumb with horror at the hugely flawed script and direction.
Rating: 2/10

Almost all major reviews in major newspapers carry similar ratings. The SRK-KJ jodi sure knows how to manage things. But I thot here on PFC, things were sacrosanct.

MNIK does not deserve more than 2 and half stars. The movie looks like a National Geographic Channel or Fox History Channel Documentary on sufferings of Muslims post 9/11.The movie’s message is strong that all Muslims are not terrorists .
The money you spend on the ticket is worth only for the exceptional and outstanding acting of Shahrukh and the chemistry between Sharukh and Kajol before the interval. Post interval there is no story only a documentary on USA and journey within USA.
Shahrukh will win the best actor award for 2010.But Karan Johar will not get any award or his film will not get any award either for best director or best film unless he purchases these awards.
There is no repeat value for this movie.A let down after KUCH KUCH HOTA HAIN AND Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gum.
TWO MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENTS KABHI ALVIDA NA KEHNA AND MNIK.
Karan Johar moving away from Kuch Kuch Hota Hain and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gum and trying to make different cinema is Like SACHIN TENDULKAR LEAVING BATTING AND DOING UMPIRING.

well…….. i think all of them who are bashing srk, johar and ofcourse khalid are not able to digest there success!!!! SRK has always proved that he is no.1, they want to support there own choices like amir, akshay etc., so whats bad in khalid admitting that………… as far as MNIK is concerned it has been praised by all the critcs……. so, do you guys want yo prove that are they all mad ????

Nimesh,
But problem with khalid saab is he bashes every single movie that he reviews, except SRK movies.. I mean c’mon, the dude is supposed to be a critic..!
I’m an SRK fan too, and I loved the film…

Utterly fascinating.
So I don’t know if Khalid Mohammed is actually getting paid for writing here, or is just doing it as a hobby or something, but regardless I do not consider him (or me or anybody else) ACCOUNTable to anyone for having and expressing an opinion.
The stars, indeed the whole article is an opinion piece. Sometimes entertainingly written, sometimes in agreement with one’s views and sometimes not. Since when does that – opinion – become a matter of debate?
Is his appraisal of the movie flawed? Is he being inaccurate or dishonest? No. He’s stated very clearly what he thought was wrong with the movie, AND very clearly why he liked the movie. He DID like the movie, you (or anybody) can’t change that. It’s his opinion and he has a right to it. So now if he expresses his opinion in the form of stars – a generous 4 stars – suddenly that’s WRONG?
Having an OPINION is wrong?!
And let me be very clear. I’m not a ShahRukh or KJo fan. I haven’t seen the movie and I’m not defending it. In fact I think I’m going to hate it. All I’m trying to defend is Khalid Mohammed’s – or for that matter any writer or any PERSON’s – right to have an opinion, REGARDLESS of how far I may disagree with it.
I think we’ve all got better things to do than obsessing over a review score.
Please.
P.S: Probably the right time to link a pretty hilarious, if flawed, article:

I guess it’s just human nature, and considering I’m actually contributing to this ‘debate’, mine too!
Roll on, masses!

If an opinion is not open to debate, it should probably be shoved up “the-analogous-word-for-an-opinion”, no?
loading...
@Dev Kanchen: u have raised valid points but have not addressed them correctly. lets see ..
[Is his appraisal of the movie flawed?] – of course it is
[Is he being inaccurate or dishonest?] – yes, he is
.
in the garb of a reviewer, he has written a starstruck or a fanboy review which is unacceptabel. inspite of the flaws in the movie, as he has mentioned, he likes the movie only bcos of the stars; and thats being dishonest to the role of a reviewer/critic.
.
having an opinion is not wrong. having a BIASED opinion is wrong
loading...
contrast KM’s incessant personal attacks on bachchan and kashyap in his so called reviews, against the fawning over the lead pair in this film and you have one of the most morally bankrupt and twisted reviewers of our times.
loading...
dev kanchen, the reason this review is attracting such protest is bcos it is prejudice disguised as opinion. we have enough people in the country patronisng the high and mighty (the congress-srk alliance being case in point). stop being one of them. instead, support the common viewer’s equal right to express his digust at thinly veiled prejudice.
loading...
Khalidji, I agree with everything you said except for reasons of four stars. Shahrukh Khan is not convincing at all, he still displays acting’s acting typical of his. Kajol also tend to be noisy like in K3G and severe over-acting. Do not like this movie at all. btw I’m a moslem and not a terrorist.
loading...
if srk and johar continue to make movies like this, i will become a terrorist!
loading...
I didn’t watch the movie precisely because Shahrukh Khan was playing the lead role. I would have loved to see someone organic like Anil Kapoor or Rajpal Yadav in that role.
However, I oppose the Shiv Sena vandalism tooth and nail. Every movie has the right to reach its audience.
