Star sons & daughters : : heritage profile
People are different but when children opt same profession which their parents and grandparents were owning then comparison between their performances in their different era comes in to the existence. Though comparison can be odd but still it can be searched that whether children went upside or downside in terms of skill and performance?
Kapoor family: Prithvi Raj Kapoor was a big name in hindi cinema and theatre world, before
Raj Kapoor, aged 24 in 1948, released his first directorial venture “Aag” and declared his independent, different and important existence in the hindi cinema. Though as an actor he had already shown his acting skill in “Neel Kamal (1947)” and especially in “Gopinath(1948)”. Raj Kapoor earned different and much bigger famed status than Prithivi Raj Kapoor. Given his passion towards cinema, hardly anyone can say that he was in films because his father was a star. Raj Kapoor proved his worth in every field of film making. He was director of par excellence, very nice actor also, he had a great understanding about music, he worked with best available cine writers of that time. In several ways he was pioneer in hindi cinema and he could touch the hearts of millions of audience, through his cinema.
Prithvi Raj Kapoor’s two other sons Shammi and Shashi Kapoor too made their own place in the hindi cinema. Though both never were treated as great actors in the league of Prithvi Raj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor but Shammi’s films entertained the audience and Shashi Kapoor as a producer, produced some of the finest hindi films and through Merchant Ivory productions, he acted in some good English films also. First Shashi Kapoor’s wife Jennifer Kendel and later Shashi Kapoor himself kept alive Prithvi Theater. Shashi Kapoor gave back to cinema and theatre much more than he earned from here. Some day he will be treated as one of the best Producer Hindi cinema ever had.
Raj Kapoor’s eldest son Randhir Kapoor, though good in comedy, could not do much in acting and turned towards direction and made few good films but none of them can be said at par with the films his father made. So certainly here we see a kind of degradation.
Raj Kapoor’s second son Rishi Kapoor, can be credited to earn his own place as an actor in hindi cinema and thus he kept burning the torch or acting in his family. Rishi Kapoor is different actor than Prithiraj Kapoor or his father Raj Kapoor or his brother Randhir Kapoor and what he could do none of his elders could do that. He is an original actor. So here we see that he maintained a standard and can be said that he kept status quo which Raj Kapoor established. Though in direction, Rishi Kapoor, is certainly a degradation in comparison to Raj Kapoor’s standard. But he has made only one film and there are chances he make better cinema in future.
Raj Kapoor’s youngest son Rajeev Kapoor showed degradation both in acting and direction.
Raj Kapoor’s granddaughters Karishma and Kareena, have yet to touch the standard of Rishi Kapoor in acting, so Raj Kapoor is far situated name for them to reach. Though if compare Karishma and and Kareena, younger sister certainly has left behind her elder sister by performing well in Omkara.
Anands- Raj, Dev and Dilip differed from each other in every thing. Their styles were different. Their films were different and they brought us the variety. Their films are so different that sometimes its very difficult to compare their place in hindi cinema. One can compare the direction skill of Raj with Dev or acting skill of Dilip with Raj and Dev but when its matter of full product as a collective film, then comparison becomes useless. They gave us complete films in their own way.
Dev Anand’s son Sunil Anand, could not show even half the skill his father was having in acting. Sunil has tried his hands in direction also but he has yet to attain a place there. Sunil has not produced any sign till now that he can bring any upgradation in what Dev Anand established.
Chetan Anand : A wonderful and innovative director, who gifted us many great films. But his son Ketan Anand could not rise up to the standard of his father.
Deols - Dharmendra earned a strongly established place for him in hindi cinema and delivered nice films in almost every genera. His acting style is different and which does not match with any of his predecessor. Amitabh Bachchan’s acting skills can find parent cells in Dilip Kumar’s way of acting but Dharmendra is original and different.
Though his son Sunny Deol gave few good and hit films but he cant be said an upgradation in the league of Dharmendra. Sunny is not better action hero than Dharmendra. Sunny’s comedy skill is far below than Dharmendra’s. Dharmendra has been equally good in sober and social films but Sunny may look total misfit in those kind of films. Lately Sunny has shown that he is good only in angry young man type roles.
Bobby Deol, as an actor, is even at lower status than Sunny Deol.
Esha Deol has to get the status, her mother Hema Malini had attained so to reach to the status of acting her father Dharmendra had achieved is far flying objective.
Dutts - Sunil Dutt could not earn as much fame as an actor as his wife Nargis attained. But he earned a different place for him in hindi cinema. But his real contribution will be assessed by the films he made as producer and director. His son Sanjay Dutt, started in Rocky, as an actor who was having acting skill much lower than what his parents had but now he is successfully going ahead. He surely is an up gradation. In the acting department Sanjay has more variety in him than his father had. Sanjay has never directed a film so comparisons are out of question but he has yet to touch the standard in the production, which his father established by producing different kind of cinema through “Reshma aur Shera”, “Yadein”, and “Dard ka Rishta”.
Bachchans – Both Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan have been actors of par excellence and its useless to talk about their acting skill. Their son Abhishek has yet to achieve same standard of acting which his parents have been showing since last 30 years. There is lack of consistency in his performances and sometimes he assures that he may achieve same heights but next time he disappoints. Though it will be early to say that he shows a degradation in acting skill but this is sure that he can only touch the height established by his father, he can’t surpass him.
Yash Chopra : He did not opt the path of his elder brother BR Chopra. He maintained fine balance between good and quality films and commercial success. If Gurudatt made a poet, hero of his film Pyasaa, Yash Chopra also showed his hero as poet and playwright in Kabhi Kabhi and Silsila. He achieved heights in direction by making Deewar, Trishul, Silsila, Lamhe, Mashaal and he got high commercial success by directing Chandani, Darr, DTPH, Veera Zara etc. He made multi starrers, Vaqt and Kala Pathar. He earned a huge fan following through the commercial success, his films got in past 40 years. He became synonym of romantic films. His son Aditya Chopra, made two highly commercially successful films, DDLJ and Mohabatein and though today he is seen as most powerful producer in hindi films, he has to deliver, as a director, another film like DDLJ to stand in the league of Yash Chopra. Aditya equals Yash Chopra in terms of commercial success but Yash Chopra is sitting on many films and a long continuity is behind the Yash Chopra while Aditya is the director of only two films. Certainly he is better producer and has better marketing mind than Yash Chopra. Great hopes and expectations are there from Aditya.
Sippy: Ramesh Sippy touched sky with his Sholay and became one of the best directors in Hindi cinema. He made a remarkable film and thus proved that as a director he can do wonders. In Shakti also he did wonders as far as quality cinema is concerned. In Buniyad TV serial, he did it again. His son Rohan Sippy has yet to match the skill of his father. He is perhaps only one film old.
Roshans – Rakesh Roshan never got much success in acting and all his reputation came through direction. But his Son Hritik Roshan is certainly a high degree up-gradation in terms of acting. He surpasses not only his father but several other actors in acting. His acting is an evolution. Legacy is rising up here. Rajesh Roshan too maintained the music legacy his father Roshan had left.
Vinod Khanna : Like Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna too was original and had no link to any kind of acting style used in hindi cinema. He started, playing villain in films and later became a successful hero and once was classified as good competitor for Amitabh Bachchan. Vinod Khanna earned a different reputation and one the one hand gave us commercially successful films and on the other hand gave classy and different films like, Mere Apne, Imtihan, Shaq, Achanak, Inkar,Meera, Rihai, Lekin etc.His sons Akshay and Rahul are liked by many but still they have to touch the height, their father had attained in his active time. Akshay shows promises but still he is limited to certain kind of roles.
Raaj Kumar : He was entirely different than others and established his strong position in hindi cinema and though in later years he was accused of giving repetitive acting performance but he also gave us some wonderful films where he brought out before us a high standard of acting. But none of his sons have shown any kind of sign that they can achieve that status in acting which their father had attained.
Rajendra Kumar : He is not treated as classy actor but his films have been very successful and his son Kumar Gaurav, though started very well with highly successful “Love story”, could not get even that status which his father had got.
Manoj Kumar: He was also not treated as good actor and like Rajendra Kumar he too was termed as clone of Dilip Kumar. But he made films himself and through some of them he earned a good place in hindi cinema. But his son could not do anything neither in acting nor in direction.
Feroz and Sanjay Khan : Both the brothers, earned more fame from direction than acting, but still they never were treated as bad actors but their respective sons, Fardeen and Zayed, both have yet to attain the status of their respective fathers.
Jeetendra : He is also one such actor who never was credited as good actor but whose films always got big commercial successes. But with V Shantaram and Gulzaar he did certain good films also where his acting has been praised. His son Tushar, has yet to match his father’s acting and commercial success level.
Behals : What Mom Nutan, did, her son Mohnish never could do that. He showed the potential in Maine Pyar Kiya, but later he perhaps accepted his limitations and did not explore much. He showed a degradation in Nutan’s legacy.
Tagores : Mother, Sharmila, was very good in some films but son, Saif, certainly surpasses her as an actor and he has skies to touch. A sure and certain up-gradation here.
Tanuja and Kajol : Tanuja was different but certainly Kajol shows more flexibility and thus more potential than her mother.
Suchitra Sen : If she was 8 on a scale of 10 then her daughter Mun Mun Sen struggled to reach up to 4 even. Suchitra Sen’s grand daughter albeit showed potential in Chokher Bali but still both the grand daughters have to cover a long distance before they claim that they are taking care of acting heritage their grandmother has left in the past.
Rajesh Khanna : He was different and a class of his own but none of his daughters left any impression as actresses. They were a sure de gradation in comparison to their parents Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia.
Oberois : Suresh Oberoi had a baritone voice but he remained limited to character roles. His son Vivek does not posses that rich voice of his father but in acting he shows potential and brings hope that he goes ahead. Though like Abhishek Bachchan, his performances also lack in continuity. Sometimes he is good and sometimes below average.
Jeevan : He made his place and maintained it for long time but his son Kiran Kumar could not show such consistent profile. He started as hero, then disappeared and reappeared again as villain, did few films and went to TV serials later.
BR Chopra : He made fantastic and different films which always had a strong story content and his subjects were always able to generate curiosity. But his son Ravi Chopra is never could obtained that status in direction and film making which his father achieved.
Gulzar : He achieved which very few directors have achieved and gifted us many beautiful films. But his daughter Meghna Gulzar, has yet to prover her skill in direction. Her Filhal was no match to even first film of Gulzar as director. She has a long way to prove that she is right choice to own Dad’s heritage.
Manmohan Desai : He gave us some of the most entertaining films ever made in hindi cinema but his son Ketan Desai could not do any such thing in direction.
Mukesh : Mukesh established himself as a different singer than Rafi, Kishor, Talat and Manna De and peopled loved his songs and singing. His son Nitin Mukesh could not do that.
Kishor Kumar : He was multitalented but here we consider only his singing. He was not trained singer and yet he was there on top with Rafi, Mukesh, Talat, Lata, Asha,Manna De etc. Since many years, millions of people have been changing their moods just by listening to his songs. He gave us variety. Though his son Amit Kumar also sung few very good songs but he too could not match with the skill his father was having.
Rafi : He was most precious male singer in hindi cinema and gave us maximum variety but his son Anwar (hope he was his son) could not match up with his fathers great skill.
Many other examples will be there.
In Bangali cinema Satyajit Ray is shining like a sun before his son’s dim achievements and skills.
In hindi cinema, children of Anil Kapur, Rishi Kapoor, Mithun Chakravarty, Shatrughan Sinha, Nana Patekar, Naseeruddin Shah etc are ready to enter in to the arena.

RK, that was an exhaustive Bollywood family tree.
I wonder why Hollywood has so much less of such family trees. Only few that comes to my mind are
Micheal Douglas, Charlie Sheen,Angelina Jolie. Is it because that Hollywood movie houses have been more corporatized long time back ? Why do we have to keep on seeing Abhishek,Fardeen,Zyed and Tushar? Fuck I don’t seem to recollect any new face that doesn’t belong to Bolly khandans or is not a winner from those model-hunt-shows.
Bishu:
Its all about family. Family values:)
On serious note. Everybody does this. If one person is settled comfortably then he tries to settle other family members.
Though difference remains here :
First generation of actors were not born with silver spoon in their mouth. They went there, struggled and earned a place for them. If they helped their brothers and sisters in film industry then it was somewhat natural and demand of their conditions.
But if this insecurity is not gone in two generation time, then things are more deeper than look on surface.
its a severe and deeply rooted factor in indian psyche that if children own their parent’s occupation then they have better chances to grow further as they get already established ground. Tatas, Bajajs, etc may boast that their children start from lower step in their business empire but fact remains that top steps are always reserved for their own kids only.
Moreover with present lot of star sons and daughters its understood thing that this is the easiest job they can do. Everywherelse they will have to face tough competition and they are not habitual of this kind of competition. Its relatively easy job, where hard work is less and payment is more, fame is instant and only risk is, ambiguity about success of the film, but once they get their fees, then it lies on producers, financiars and distributers.
There is a strong attraction towards cinema as field because once you get sucess here, you can get many things in life. Life is far easy then rest of the living creatures on earth.
In Hollywood, these star children do what they like most as life security is more in USA then in India. There one can leave films and can go for studies but in India you wont get any such example. Films here are taken as a medium to fulfilm most of your dreams. and star Children too are not separate from this pysche. For them everything is so easy. they have access to best film makers, more finance and they can have training anywhere they like. So they clearly have advantage over others, belonging to non-filmi background.
But still best and top position is always there for the eligible. Amitabh Bachchan comes from nowhere and reaches there at top. SRK comes from Nonfilmi background and sits there at top. and this tradition will be repeated again and again.
Many people(definetly they are so called actors or stars) are surviving in bollywood just becuse they are son/daughter of a star.
Hopefully the mantle of SRK is passed to his worthy successor outside the cartel. Like the jews me too is looking out for a messiah. Bollywood surely needs a new face that has no mama-chacha connection to keep the aam-junta dream of making-it-big alive.
Bishu: at present Hritik is the man in waiting and perhaps after Hritik, history repeats itself and someone comes from outside of film Industry families and sits there on top. Or may be scene is changing and many will share that position like Hollywood. No1 position is slowly disappearing from hindi cinema also.
RK, as far as I know none of Mohammed Rafi family member joined Hindi film industry and Anwar is certainly not his son though his voice and style of singing is very similiar to Rafisaab.
You can say he was a clone of the great singer.
Overall, definitly a very exhaustive list you have complied.^:)^
Hi David: Thanks, its all fine here. guess everybody doing good.:)
Muzzy:
thanks for correction . I thought that Rafi saab had two sons, Shahid and Anwar.:)
But you are saiyng Anwar is his filmi son and not real son.:)
i think, Amit Kumar was just unlucky. He had the talent but never got that many offers/songs. strange.
what about Aamir Khan’s family tree?
HG:
yes we can say Suresh Wadekar and Amit Kumar as two less lucky singers who could not get due success. But even then Amit Kumar’s talent is very less in comparison to his father, Kishor Kumar.
Aamir and Salman both belong to filmi families but they were not launched by their families. Dont think they got any advantage being related to filmi families. Moreover point to discuss is the traditional legacy. Salman’s father was script writer and Salman is actor so comparison can be made when Salman enters in script writing. Aamir too is first actor in his family. His uncle was producer and director. Yes we can compare his Lagaan with Nasir Husaain’s production but genere are totally different. Even if Aamir belong to filmi family, his presence in films is pleasant and solely dependent on his high class talent.:)
hey rk chk out the trailer of my short film..

Another great post!
To address the Hollywood question, most actors in the US strive to give their children “normal” lives.
Many famous actors with families don’t live in Malibu or the Hollywood Hills, but the Westside of LA and the “Valley”, in normal neighbourhoods, (although at prices most mortals can’t afford).
They do this so that their children won’t be spoiled or ruined by fame and wealth.
Because these children have relatively normal childhoods, they are allowed to choose their own career paths, and American parents generally accept whatever career choices their children make.
There is also a lot of pressure on the children of the famous in the US.
For every Angelina Jolie, there is a Colin Hanks or a Bryce Dallas Howard, actors who may be good but who find that catching a break and being taken seriously is difficult as Americans publically don’t believe in paternalism or favouritism.
Drew Barrymore is a classic example of this.
She comes from Hollywood royalty, but still had to work hard to prove herself as an adult star - nothing was handed to her.
You didn’t mention my beloved SRK in your post.
Isn’t his son already in the industry
@ Bishu - If I weren’t at work, I would list Hollywood dynasties, maybe I will bore all of you with it later…
david: friend,
will be able to see your video tomorrow. something is wrong with flashplayer and I am unable to play your link.:(
Hope I rectify it and enjoy your film then.
t!,
your valuable comment, added many informations. Thanks
pls do post your Hollywood dynasty ASAP. It will be an interesting post.
Hope SRK’s dynasty comes in to existence in few years.:)
But guess he may follow, the hollywood trend. But who knows what will happen tomorrow. It will be depending on SRK’s kid’s educational skill, what they do.:)
whats the point of this article?
David
Nice effort but IMHO it seems a lot “inspired by satya”.. atleast going by the teaser
1 - underground parking gang chase
2 - railway line chase scene
3 - hoodlums in conversation in a seedy room get startled and then shot at by a moving cam (killer POV)
oops
srry david i did not realize twas only meant for RK
my bad
lovely post RK =D> funny you didn’t even mention tanisha (kajol’s sister) after tanuja and kajol :)) though i don’t think much of bobby deol as an actor, i must admit i liked him in humraaz.. thought he did pretty well
Ogden : “Null” point - Blank point:)
Striker: I should have mentioned that Tanisha is more good looking than Mom Tanuja and sister Kajol.:)
Bobby can be good in many films, point is Sunny and Bobby together are not equal to 50% of Dharmendra’s acting skill. so a degradation in the gene as far as acting profession is concerned.:(
Hi RK…
dont think so.it needs … flash player .. will check and get back to you
Some of the more infamous launches and promotions:
Sanjay Kapoor (Aati Nahin…)
Kishen Kumar (uggghhhhhhhh)
Salman Khan wrote script for (if you can call them that) Chandramukhi, but then wisely gave up!
You also perhaps forgot Uday Chopra.
Ranjit:
Uday Chopra has no lineage of acting in his family. So he is the first. Aditya Chopra took path of direction and thus can be compared with father Yash Chopra. Thats why did not mention Uday. Kishan Kumar also had no ancestor in films and acting. so he came, did, lost and went.
Sanjay, I, did not mention deliberately and you are right he could be included.
Haha! It’s all about loving your family! Kabhi Hit Kabhi Phat!
I happened to see Rajkumar’s daughter Vastavikta in a movie called “8-Shani” (Did anyone even hear about this?)..
[Admin Note: your comment has been edited. Please avoid making such statements]
…never liked him though…he alaways got on my nerves!
Hi AT thanks…infact i made that film with a sole purpose to show it to RGV.
So i had to make it look like his genre… I was making rounds to RGV’s hyd office few years back while was still working as a creative director…then i decided to make a film…still i couldnt meet him till Anurag came like an angle and introduced me to RGV…RGV saw it and wanted me to work as a Chief AD for Shabari..
But after meeting RGV.. i just couldnt connect with him…something inside didnt want me to work with him…
may be i was destined to meet Anurag not RGV…
