Movie Review : Star TrekNot able to control ourselves and wait until May 8th for the movie to release, we grabbed the first opportunity made available to us to see the movie at a special screening.

Star Trek fans… amidst all your excitement we know many of you will be equally nervous. We know we were. Would the movie turn out to be bigger than our expectations or would it fall flat? Wolverine for many fans out there has been a disappointment (though we thought the action was terrific)…

Star Trek Movie ReviewAll fans of this Trek can breathe now. We loved it. It went beyond our expectations. Director J.J. Abrams puts the story in the driver’s seat and the special effects in the passenger seat and gets it bang on right. This 2 hour 7 minute journey is absolutely enjoyable and exhilarating. The entire audience at the special screening was bound by Abrams in the manner in which he unfolded the story and stepped on the gas yet never breaking out too fast and never letting the audience out of his grip by slowing down. The warp at which he drove this ship was perfect for the 300 plus fans who gathered for the screening.

An important thing we noticed is the way Abrams and writers Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman, etch out the character making them human, flesh and blood, caught up in intense situations. The ease with which they involve the audience with the characters is something notably missed in the recent comic book characters and television shows brought to life on the big screen. Its this establishment and getting us involved with the characters which has the jokes, gags and intense scenes flowing out smoothly. Knife through butter.

The story (without revealing anything), is about this bad guy Nero (Eric Bana), who is out on an evil mission to destroy all planets in the Federation, and our beautiful earth is one of them. It is here, then, that we find the origins of USS Enterprise. The young Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Chekov, Sulu and not to forget Scotty (great comedy by Simon Pegg). How these young guys get together and how circumstances lead them to be what they eventually become is the path the movie takes.

Star Trek Movie ReviewA special note here about the casting. We found it to be really well done. Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, John Cho as Sulu and others looked like they were born to do this. Plus the constant funny remarks, mannerisms and dialogues by these characters throughout the movie, instantly clicks with you – of what you have seen in “their” future on television – deserves full marks and a pat on the back of the writing team. You know exactly what McCoy means when he’s sarcastic with Spock or the way Scotty reacts everytime he “gets it” or for that matter Sulu and Chekov giving their valuable inputs and of course Spock when he looks at Kirk and goes “I expected that of you”.

And when the evil is vanquished, and the team assembles on star board, Abrams pulls another master stroke with the famous voice-over about the Enterprise. Goose bumps!

If you are a Star Trek fan, start counting the hours to D-Day… and if you are not a fan so far, just jump in with the fans, this is one ride you will truly enjoy!

This was a movie I was most skeptical about and judging by the overwhelming positive response Star Trek seems to be back thanks to JJ Abrams. Producer Rick Berman did run the whole franchise to the ground and even screenwriter John Logan couldn’t keep the series afloat after Nemesis. Thank god Berman doesn’t have anything to do with Star Trek after the Enterprise series. Can’t wait to watch this one. Thanks for the review.

Awesome. Looking forward to Simon Pegg as he is the only one I know of, apart from Eric Bana. Rest is all jumping in with the fans. :-)
