Hi Folks,

I have never done back to back posts in PfC, but a good news must be shared by all methinks. As the ad for the Prince Tennis Rackets says, “It’s Time I’m Ready, Let the Games Begin,” so say I, it’s time, South Asian American’s are ready, let the movies begin.

In a standing testomoney to the NEW Hollywood and in going with the trend of recongnizing talent from the ethnic minorities, first the African American, then the Latino, then the Asian and now the South Asian, it gives me great pleasure to annnounce that MGM’s Van Vilder- The Rise of Taj, the first Sole South Asian Lead movie, has risen to the TOP TEN weekend box office collections, as reported a few minutes back by Variety.

Filmmaking in my world is not about doing favors, it is pure, hard business and in fact should be that and the only argument that is also the most compelling one, is that of Return of Investment.

For a South Asian lead film to come in the top 10…….after a long time….I can feel the first ripple of South Asian talent recognition in Hollywood. Will this ripple become a wave or a Tsunami? Who knows, but no one can doubt that it will be more than a mere ripple.

Sincerely,

    Hey Vivek,

i don’t quite agree with you there. The reviews for Van Wilder are very bad and the movie itself is not doing very well according to rediff.

Vivek: Thats a good news. Its a fact that the money lies in the western market. Oversees is the biggest market for Indian films. The production houses are hiring Indian actors. The day is not far when Indian producers would be making films with hollywood cast!

OM- Good catch, yep I stand corrected,on the back to back posts.

Dhiraj- Respect your views and everyone has an opinion and that’s what makes the film business interesting. On the rediff saying it ain’t doing well though I would argue, the numbers say it all. Cost of making the film, perhaps $1mill, since it had no stars. Seems to me it has recoved it’s cost and then some, in the first weekend itself. Perhaps they bypassed Redif when it came to publicity and hence the grouse by Redif.

Manjeet- You are bang on, actually the reverse is already happening. A very STRONG rumor, from a very DEAR mainstream Hollywood family (husband and wife team who happen to be friends) is that they are casting John Cusack and Lara Dutta in a project together.

If a shitty, box office bomb that deserved nothing more that a straight to dvd release is gonna stop the presses…

    Science damn it.
National Lampoon used to be funny. Now every movie of theirs is just 2 naked chicks centered around one dude.

Btw, how many times have “we” (whomever we are) have arrived? Lagaan, Monsoon Wedding, That canadian model chick, Kal Penn in the first van wilder, Bend it Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice, the Mistress of Spices.

I’d go on but I’m afraid of being in bad taste.
