Storyboarding : The Making of Rediff Bol

I did my first ad film for rediff.com.

The product was Rediff Bol the instant messenger.

I wrote about 25 scripts till we locked on the one you will finally see (users in India can see it on television currently).

The idea was to do the whole ad around the character of Raju and weave a limerick around him.

The first one went something like this

Ek tha Raju bada widwaan, Uska classmate tha pehelwan

Raju ki lovelife total flop, uska dost bana roadblock

Us din raju ko gussa aayaa, dimaag mein idea aaya, rediff bol par avatar banaya

Dost usne khub banaye, joke usne khub sunaye, ladkiyon ke dil behelaye

Pehelwan ka baj gaya dhol, jabse Raju ne use kiya Bol

Raju ne payi a whole new life, set ho gayi bhidu love life!

Avataar banaye Yaar Rediff Bol (MVO)

Did a scratch of this on a hip hop tune, but we wanted a softer feel, so finally settled on what I had brought as reference but turned out that we would buy rights and record the lyrics to the tune of Bindu re Bindu from Padosan. But the old lyrics did not suit the meter of the limerick I had written, so wrote another lyrics and this time in half an hour because we were in the studio, with Bobo our music director trying to make me understand meter ‘ta ra ra ra, tra ta’ At first it was all Mars speak to me, and I wanted to say out loud that ‘Dude this is my first attempt at anything lyrical and even the limerick took me an hour to write in peace’ but I kept my trap shut finally I stared getting the hang off it and we got the lyrics done.

Dekho Yeh Hai Raju

Dolly ka Deewaana Raju

Bada Bhola Raju

Bechara Raju

Dil Toota Raju

Hoshiyaar Raju

Bana Rediff Avataar, Raju ko mile yaar, mila pyaar

Hit hai Raju, arrey fit hai Raju

Rediff Bol se bane yaar, ho jaye pyaar bana avatar

Hit hai Raju

Rediff Bol Avataar Banaye Yaar (MVO)

The music fell into place and I was very happy to see the face of marketing head Manish Agarwal, who over the course of the film has become a brother, smiling away.

We had storyboarded the script, which was about Raju coming to the canteen card and rose in hand to propose to Dolly, and a pehelwan character who is also trying to woo Dolly takes the mickey out off him.

Raju goes home sad and gets an idea and creates a rediff bol avatar, goes online more confident and gets the girl.

Next day in college he gives it back to the pehelwan and walks off with the girl, a total Bollywood style love story.

I’m sharing the storyboard and the animatics and the final ad so that you can see the various stages of creation and get an insight into the dynamics of making an ad film.

I was lucky that my brief was fairly simple and was given a free hand to see where I would go with my ideas instead of being told a thought and to work around it.

What I really enjoyed was the fact that it was a great learning process of telling a story in 30 seconds with finesse and a mass audience in mind, so the whole structure of the script, shooting pattern and editing has to be made ‘Idiot’ proof.

As we speak I’m working on script ideas for an ad on rediffmail if anyone has ideas feel free to chip in.

Btw, have been working on my script for a graphic novel, if anyone knows a illustrations guy looking to make his mark and collaborate with me, pls ask him to contact me, my e-mail id is hyperactiv[at]rediffmail[dot]com . The idea is to draw out the first 20 pages, and approach a publishing house with the full script and the 20 pages of drawings

suparn.. too good =D> seeing the ad come alive thru its phases of conception, the pitch, to storyboarding, animation, and the final product was awesome. will spread the word about the illustration guy for your graphic novel..

great stuff, Suparn. This adds another feather to PFC’s overcrowded cap of good, informative articles. We have been talking about storyboarding all these days, and you gave a great start to the concept with an illustrious explanation of the whole process.
I particularly liked it studying it in stages, first the pre-idea stage, copy, process, storyboard n then the final product. How the campaign/spot is does not matter. The whole process sounds so much fun to do…

Really liked it. PFC is truning out to be very informative.

Suparn, You have 20 shots in your Story Board covering 30 secs. If I am correct you need atleast 6 frames of 1 shot to register in human mind. You have 120 secs of minimum shoot, which played at 24 frames/sec would give u 5 secs of actual time. To convey the scenes you would obviously need lot more time. Do you guys do this sort of math before deciding the # of shots? Or the # of secs a particular shot has to be done?

  9. Suparn Verma on November 14th, 2006 2:09 am

Manjeet, all those factors are decided prior to shooting, secondly u will see that even my animatics is 30 seconds long, usually people go from storyboard to shooting, we did an animatics as we wanted to do a research on the ad. hence i spent 5 days on animatics which served as the blueprint for the shoot, the place where you will find the minimum cuts is the animation portion of the ad which serves as the virtual world, its almost one seamless shot so there is no trouble of human brain taking in new information

  10. Manjeet singh on November 14th, 2006 3:30 am

Suparn, Its a common notion that animation is more expensive then real shooting. Or is there a way around to do it cheaply? The animation for the ad looks good! Will it be aired too?

  11. Shikha on November 16th, 2006 2:09 pm

    hey!
just today i saw tht ad being aired on TV (i guess it was mtv) and nw m reading this post. amzinggg! gr8 wrk dude..congrats :)

In coll days I used to take part in ad competitions n used to love creative writin n directin plays.
there is a desire in me to be acopywriter.
but maybe i dont have gut sto leave all n join an ad agency.
can u plz suggest if ad agencies would like part time writers.
I have no experience but I have passion.
I do not knwo whether I have talent( I kno wi have it) and taht is the reason would like to test myself.
    Canu please guide me.

  14. Suparn Verma on November 25th, 2006 1:05 am

My only answer to you Karthik would be o go out and do it, if u think u can write, then start writing, stop thinking. If action does not follow thought, the result is zilch. So its your life and we have only one and its short, so do everything that u wanna do as long as u believe in it and yourself. No one here can tell u whether its right or wrong, thats your right to decide

  15. KARTIK SHAH on November 26th, 2006 10:26 pm

Thanks suparna .can u suggest some short trem workshop/course in copywriting.
Also would love to assist some one in copywriting.

    Thank you once again

Suparna, that rediff bol spot is pretty cool. i was wondering

    1) what do you think of animation as a medium

    2) who did the animation for the spot?

    3) how long did it take?
