I did not have much expectation as I walked into the theater. Golmaal was an ok movie with some humour but bits of it were quite forced. So I really did not expect any great change but was totally disheartened to find out that Money is one of the greatest enemies of creativity. This film more than proves the point.

Why money? Well every popular Director (more or less, some have deviated from this rule, thankfully) in India has gone through this path. They enter the industry with a punch (some really good). The first film they do has a lot of hunger and a really tight budget. They stretch every single rupee doled out by the producer to 120-140 paisa and there is a certain amount of Junoon in making that film. If the film ends up becoming a mass entertainer like Golmaal & makes bucket loads of money, et voila a new genius is born. This new kid/old person on the block is now seduced by the best of the industry and there is no limit to the budget for his/her second film. The actors he/she can get for this movie will be the best and well no limits to what crew he/she wants. Now is the beginning of the end. The director who till yesterday was looking at substance suddenly become all style obsessive and the whole second film concentrates on the look & feel. The story has been thrown out the window & all is forgotten about the narrative. This is the situation we see predominantly in the industry and Sunday is sadly no different from this path

Golmaal had a cast of predictable comedians and you could double guess what they would tell or do in the succeeding scene. Sunday on the other hand had a good cast. Ajay Devgan was repeated but hopefully had to have more to do in this one. Then there was Irfaan Khan, the actor who can bring some depth to any scene. The heroine was the effervescent Ayesha Takia and of course there was Arshad Warsi but still the movie does not work.

The story is very ridiculous. The concept behind the story is interesting but due to the director’s glorious turn of events or whatever, the story had most probably not been fleshed out and loses focus quite quickly. The story is about a missing day in the heroine’s life. Now this becomes murkier as every scene has one new face entering the frame and after watching for about 20-40 minutes of the movie, you just get fed up of seeing so many people and so much of forced humour in the film. Why is it in India, even now, we only tease accents, locations and physical or other deformities? This movie has this by the truck-loads. Between these really sad jokes, there is a progression of the story and also some songs that completely lack lustre or feel they are needed. There is a romance that blossoms between Ajay & Ayesha but the story does not go anywhere. The problem is the high amount of build-up that is given to the story of the missing day. I mean the background score was good, you feel you are sitting in a Hitchcock or an earlier RGV film but the story had no connection to the score. The other big problem is the waste of really good talent. There is one really sick scene with Irfaan Khan dressed as Ravana and he is chased by a Dog. These were jokes done by ilk of Rajendra Nath in the 60’s, 70’s in Hindi and Dwarkish in Kannada in the 70’s, 80’s. Why waste an amazing actor like Irfaan on such a movie. Arshad is also not used to his capabilities. Ajay looks tired and out of place. The somewhat small treat in the movie is to watch Ayesha in those good outfits. The music is not really worth talking about. The cinematography is ok but there are these chase scenes that really are out of place and a waste of good money.

All in all, a movie that falls in almost all departments and I did not enjoy any part of it save for a few jokes from Arshad & Irfaan. I am worried that this will be the first hit of 2008 as our dear audience seem to love such movies (Ex: Heyy Babyy, Dhamaal, Welcome…) & we will get to see more Sunday’s in the rest of 2008. See it on Pirated DVD’s. Not worth the ticket money ?

Cheers & Good Night,
Deepak

The original movie from which Sunday is re-made is an excellent thriller. It is Anukokunda Oka Roju, a Telugu flick with excellent screenplay, performances and technical values. The producer lost money in that film. Its sad to see films like that with innovative scripts fail at box office. I dont even have plans of watching Sunday.

Yeah, the Telugu movie (ref:above post) was funny and had pretty good acting performances and music. It really sucks that some directors can’t even copy a movie well !!

Sad to hear that the director has screwed up this film where he already had a great story and screenplay in the form of Anukokunda Oka Roju. I can see that there are lot of things that changed from the original movie which made this movie a disaster. If you get a chance, please do watch the original. I bet you will have a different feel about the story.

This is the directors 3rd movie not the 2nd. His first one was the quite decent Zameen *ing Ajay Devgan and Junior B.

Yeah DK I was going to say that as well.. Zameen was pretty good (it was written by one of our own PFC authors Suparn Verma)… I thought Golmal was ok, definately a step or two down from Zameen though a different genre altogether..

As for “The director who till yesterday was looking at substance suddenly become all style obsessive and the whole second film concentrates on the look & feel.”

I think there was an article on PFC, something about the “Sophmore JInx” or to that effect… anways, completely valid point.. just look at Ken Ghosh (Ishk Vishk –> Fida) or Anubhav Sinha (Tum Bin & Aapko Pehle Bhi Kahin Dekha Hai –> Dus & Cash)… I’d give other examples, but I already have a good enough excuse to get drunk tonight… (Saturday manana hai!)
