Sunday Posers
Thanks to RK and a good bowling performance by India (till now), I was inspired to continue the exercise for minds of PFC readers. This time there’s something for fans of both Hollywood and Hindi cinema. Identify the assortment of Alpha-numerics below.
Quiz A: Hollywood
1. A Palme d’Or winner, this Film (F1) was the first English language movie of this Director (D1). The film F1 has many scenes with the Director’s signature style of blending reality and illusion. The film F1 was inspiration for a cult Bollywood film (F2) which picks up its core idea from F1’s plot.
2. The daughter of the leading lady of F1 married an actor (A1), one of whose (A1’s) best remembered role was that of a widowed author in an ensemble comedy (film F3). F3 was supposed to be an inspiration for a Bollywood dud (F4) released last year
3. A1 was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in a movie (F5) which was directed by a Director (D2). D2’s first big directorial effort was a movie F6 which had a story of a petty criminal couple trying to kidnap their own baby who has been placed in foster care. The leading lady A2 of F6 has an actor daughter A3 whose most famous role till date has been for a movie (F7) which had a rock band called Still Water. The Director (D3) of F7 is a close friend of D2. In fact, D2 actually had a cameo in one of D3’s movie F8.
4. F8 also starred a UK born actress A4 in a bit role. A4 had a meaty role in one of the best movies (F9) of 2007 and has bagged a coveted Academy Award nomination this year
5. One of the Producers (A5) of F9 is/was also a celebrated director and won An Academy Award nod for a film F10 which had Actor A6 as the leading man. A6 himself won an Academy Award for Direction for his film F11. F11 actually beat the overwhelming favorite F12 (again demonstrating Academy Awards are no barometer for the quality of cinema) which had a very famous Director-Actor combination (D4 – A7).
Quiz B: Hindi Cinema
1. A very famous filmy ghazal is picturized on this actor (A1) who also acted in a film F1 which was the first major theatrical release of this Director D1.
2. D1 was once married to actress A2 who made her debut in a movie (F2) which was based on a Ruskin Bond story
3. F2 was produced by A3 who had a cameo appearance in Director D2’s movie F3. D2 started his career as an assistant to Director D3. D2 also made an appearance in a movie F4. F4 was part of a trilogy of movies (others being F5 and F6) by Director D4 which dealt with marital relationships
4. D3 once made a movie F7 based on Saratchandra Chatterjee’s novel. This movie was remade in recent times by a debutant director D5. The new F7 had an actress in a supporting role (A4) one of whose grandparents (A5) also featured in a movie (F8) which was directed by D3
5. F8 also was remade in recent years by a Director D6. The new F8 had a young assistant music director (A6) who is the kin of a legendary music director A7. A7 and his partner made their debut years ago with a fantasy movie F9.
6. A7 was an accomplished violin player and is credited to have played the signature tune for a song (S1) in a great war movie (F10) directed by D7
7. D7’s directorial debut F11 was produced by IPTA and the first Hindi movie to be shortlisted at Cannes
8. A5 worked with D2 in only one movie (F12) which had political overtones.
9. A3 also worked only once with D3 in a movie F13

@Subrat: From what I read, Neecha Nagar was not produced by IPTA (it was ’supported’ by it). The only film prodcued by IPTA is Dharti Ke Lal (according to wikipedia). So if Neecha Nagar is the right answer (which I’m sure it is, given the Cannes reference), the question needs to be corrected a bit

Continuing the Sunday mood here is a bollywood follow up.. (All the new clues/names in my part is prefixed by a #.. so F1 remains reference to origianl quiz of Subrat, #F1 means a new film not part of Subrat’s quiz)
Taking the anchor of your Quiz, your Actor A1 reminds me of an Insignificant film #F1.. #F1 is a truly Insignificant movie in the CV’s of some of the people associated with the film.. Specially the leading lady #A2, one of the finest ever in bollwood, and a fantastic director #D1 who lost touch in the later part of his career. #A2 had a significant association with D3 and small yet significant association with D2 (Subrat’s D2 and D3). The heroine, #A3 of A1 in #F1 had an unusual association with D2. The director #D1 of #F1 was a very successful director and attempted many genres but is mostly remembered for a specific genre of films.. After #F1, he had another film #F2.. not a forgotten film but remembered not for the film but remembered for other reasons 1. Music, 2. Casting of #A4,#A5, #A6, #A7
#A4 and #A6 have blood relation
while #A5:#A7::Saas:Bahu
Most Interesting Relationship in the question #F2=#A6
Now thats a give away….
Pavanji: #F2= #A6 gave away the fun. also #A5:#A7::Former Saas: Bahu :)
Pavan: thanks for the Benazir correction. Haven’t wacthed the movie
Aditya: Almost all right except the song. also, reg IPTA, I am going by my sources rather than weeki on Neecha Nagar. It was funded by IPTA
@ Pavan: Answers to your quiz:
#A2: Nutan
#A3: Padmini Kolhapure
#A4: Dharmendra
#A5: Sharmila Tagore
#A6: Sunny Deol
#A7 Amrita Singh
#F1: Teri Maang Sitaron Se Bhar Doon
#F2: Sunny
#D1: Rak Khosla
I know the association between Nutan and Gulzar (Gulzar’s first song was on Nutan), but what was Padmini Kolhapure’s association with Gulzar. She produced Rockford that had lyrics by Gulzar? Or
@SUBRAT
F1-BLOW UP
D1-Michelangelo Antonioni
F2-Jaane Bhi do yaroon
and i don’t agree that giving Redford the best director oscar for ORDINARY PEOPLE and snubbing scorsese for RAGING BULL anyway demonstrates that Academy Awards does not value quality of cinema.
Personally i rate raging bull few notches above ordinary people as a movie but i think redford deserved the oscar for director and raging deserved best picture….ordinary people is a fantastic film and same is true for raging bull but again both r in the same league so any of them cud have won…
anyways luved ur quiz
Aditya,
You got it.. Do you remember “a aa i ii, master ji ki aa gayi chitthi” in Kitaab , check out who were the singers ? Padmini and Shivangi Kolhapure…
As for TMSSBD is concerned, I remember it for a wrong reasons I hated the film for two reasons first @11, I used to hate Nutan for whatever she does onscreen (Only a few years later she became my favourite when I saw her in Seema, specially Manmohana.. What a filma and what a towering performance.).. Another reason to hate TMSSBD was that I was forced to watch it instead of my favourite of that time Laawaris when the elders turned down my appeal to go for a rerun of Laawaris and they took me to this one.. So despite nothing to remember about the film (except one Suresh Wadkar Song, Mere laayak gar koi khidmat ho to farmaaiye), I couldnt threw the film out of me.. so any reference to Raj Kiran lead me to TMSSBD.. I have a faint rememberance of the film though and If I remember correctly Nutan played a God Mother Kind role (She gets in to Underworld activities with help of helping don Amzad Khan to fill the maang of Pandmini Kolhapure with sitare’s.. Raj Kiran was lover of Padmini and the film completes after routine misunderstanding modules.. ).. I think it was the last time KN Singh saab appeared on Screen..
Pawan, the kitaab song was my guess as well…somehow my earlier comment got truncated at “Or….”
