…Sure, I see the bigger picture!

Shilpa Shukla“Look at the bigger picture” …was the only explaination given to me
thru’ out the filming of chak de..and thats all i did,day one..till
the film released. something within told me”wear the horses’s blind
and run on the path”…and one year is a long…….time.. the only
girl who landed for the audition with a hockey stick in her hand(..so
what if it was the cheapest tiranga stick,so what if had only seen
sunny pa ji holding it!!),the only girl who did not miss a single
practice session, rain or sun,for 4 months…for me, the camera was
always on me..not even on shahrukh(guess that’s why they chose me for
bindia)

…Saw the trial show on 4th of august..and before i could say
it to myself, they told me” girl, you have arrived”..and then came 10th
of august “the film had arrived”..and so did us..a team of 16
girls.will never forget that 1st photo session and autographs with
fans outside infinity lasted for 25 mins. or so…”bindiya,
bindiya….”whispers n screams…and i smiled n smiled ..something i
hardly did while being bindia!….and now it is normal, something
that happens to me everyday…but, i am not comfortable..i am not
comfortable when they still call me bindiya n not shilpa, not
comfortable when people at the airport ask me “where’s your team”, i am
unhappy when media people want to introduce me as bindiya…..and i am
the saddest when people forget that i am an actor who learnt hockey from
the core of her heart so that she looked the character. but i am again
happy when people from the industry tell me “where did you disappear
after khamosh pani”..thank god they remember that i was also
zubeida…and also as mala of hazaaron..

the point is, that the picture became so big, that they want to frame
it, forever. its too scary for me!the only way out, they tell me get a
glamorous folio done, hire a PR agent, newspapers call me for gossips
and hardly for interviews!(i tried doing that, still doing)and then i
got this film called junction opposite abhay, and i said “cool,i will
do it again” n then just yesterday i came to know that its not
happening till march next year…and i question…coz the clock is
ticking. And yes, i definately see the bigger picture now.!..and the
only thing that i say to myself all the time -” I AM NOT GOING TO BE
IGNORED”….guess, some of us are like teabags whose true strength
comes out when we’re put in hot water. so when problems beset you, just
think of yourself as god’s favourite cup of tea.

  2. anupam on November 19th, 2007 5:27 am

now thats something for positive attitude….u have got that extra bit of screen presence which was there for everyone to see…i remember after seeing CDI…googling n imdbing for everybit of info. about u gal…dont worry things will work out…n as the cliche goes…BINDIYA CHAMKEGI…

  3. P(L)AYBACK on November 19th, 2007 5:42 am

    Hi Shilpa !
Would u like to work for a great short film … but without pay ? It has Hollywood exposure. Pls lemme know ! thanx.

  4. ravptor on November 19th, 2007 5:44 am

Welcome Shilpa… Loved the teabag analogy.

All the best for all the work that’s coming up!

  5. Navdeep Singh on November 19th, 2007 6:23 am

    Shilpa,
You were the ‘khamosh pani’ girl for me for the longest time. I loved that movie and googled everybody in it.
So when ‘Chak De’ came along I already happened to know who you were. Congratulations on your selection of fine films and your excellent performance.

  6. Phoenixnu on November 19th, 2007 6:27 am

hey Shilpa, warm welcome n yes the bigger picture helps. may take a lil longer but the next big thing will make it big for sure!! may be the water is going to be more hot than u can imagine.

  7. Machchar on November 19th, 2007 6:45 am

Shilpa, all the best! I guess they are still looking for producers for Junction!

I suggest you not go behind leading lady roles and try to work more in performance oriented and international offbeat projects like Tannishta Chatterjee is doing. This will be your USP. And don’t trust useless “singers”!! They will be of no use to you ;)

hey hi!!! u were definitely the best actress and i feel ur role was d most difficult of all other girls…n u had to act and also play quite good hockey at the same time..
yeah Vasan “apne din mein game badal de aaja bindia naik”:)

  13. Joyjeet on November 20th, 2007 3:06 am

Shilpa… found you somewhere at last. Not any where but PFC… nice nice.
Have been wondering where WERE u. There were some reports about u being pissed off as the spotlight was on Sagarika & Vidya… dunno whether they were true or gossip.
Anyways, hope to reaqd more from u & of u & get to some stuff that matches Khamosh Pani & Hazaron

Welcome Shilpa i love and remmember every performance of yours.. carry on the good work..
btw your post should be called “Bindiya aur Bandook”:):)

  18. Angita Thomas on November 21st, 2007 12:27 am

Shilpa, Khamosh pani was ignored, I think ur role as zubeida rocked! In Chakde when your in the same frame as shahrukh, in the scene when you try to seduce him( or whatever term fits in), I think the actor in you was at the best… Good work, hope to see you in many more films:)

  19. Kapil Varindani on November 21st, 2007 12:56 am

last week i saw KP…really impressed by the mmaker…Sabiha…!!m almost done with a post which will hopefully get published on this site…:o) more power to u shilpa!!

  21. Suparna on November 21st, 2007 2:15 am

    hello Shilpa,

its not often that we remember actors as characters—Bacchan as Vijay, Brando as Don Corleone, Aamir as DJ…welcome to the league mam…and good luck for the award season ahead …waiting for some more terrific performances:)

  22. khairul hussain hazarika on November 21st, 2007 2:25 am

Congrates Shilpa ! . I think only hollywood actors can play as good .That’s great . we want some spinechilling performance from you.

  26. dabba on November 21st, 2007 8:41 am

All this unintended use of the risque “teabags” is turning me into my chuckling 12 year old adolescent.

please look up the slang. it’s quite delightful in this context.

  27. etj on November 21st, 2007 9:02 am

The original teabags analogy is actually attributed to first lady FD Roosvelt made popular on Indian TV by pooja bedi in one of her chat shows.that apart, lkd the passion that you have shown.

  28. satchit on November 21st, 2007 1:54 pm

It was great reading your post… have still not seen Khamosh Paani, but was taken over by your performance in Chak De… I kept arguing with my friends, that “the girl who played Bindiya” has to be an actor, cannot be a hockey player acting… congrats, keep it up and may we have more of you to watch soon…

  29. Kenny on November 21st, 2007 9:45 pm

    ^:)^^:)^^:)^^:)^

Shilpa Shukla!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Man, am I pleasantly surprised to see you here! Great!
Let me mention straightaway that yours was the numero uno performance in CDI. I’ve said so in my review on my blog at
    http://movieaddict.sulekha.com/blog/post/2007/09/chak-de-india-review.htm
I wished I could find some way to tell you so and congratulate you, but now that you’re here, it’s great to be able to do it directly.
The media attention may have been on Sagarika and Vidya, but you and Chitranshu were the only two girls who, in my humble opinion, maintained character throughout. It was obvious right from the first 10 minutes that you were the best actor of the lot by miles. If it weren’t that SRK turned in his best non-Rahul non-Raj performance after Swades, and kept his typical mannerisms in check, I’d say you outdid even him. Your body language and even eyebrow language were superb throughout. In the attemted seduction scene, I was watching intently whether Shah Rukh would ruin it with a typical SRK+KaranJohar kind of reaction, but he thankfully wrapped it up well.
BTW, I apologize if I sound patronizing. It’s just that I’m getting to direcly express my appreciation, so it’s all gushing out.
I’ve watched HKA, but not Khamosh Pani. Would have, but I haven’t found the CD in the shops I frequent.
    Keep writing!

  30. The Bicycle Thief on November 21st, 2007 11:54 pm

Loved your part in Khamosh Pani.. thought would never see you on screen again…then saw you in HKA…. had to see your scenes again to confirm that it was you… chak de confirmed that i should be expecting you on screen frequently ….Now you are here, couldn’t ask for anything more… By the way there was something about the way you walked out of the room after covering your head with the dupatta in the last scene of Khamosh Pani…

  31. Rahul on November 22nd, 2007 2:12 am

If reading between lines was as easy as it seems.. then life would not be as complicated.. Good luck to God’s fav cup of tea.. cheers !!

  32. aditi on November 22nd, 2007 2:16 am

You will always be remembered for Khamosh Paani -a truly amazing film and you acted really really well…Keep it up!!!

  33. Rajeev on November 22nd, 2007 4:13 am

    Hey Shipa,
    Welcome on board:).

Your performance was simply “Awesome” in CDI.

Things do work and for such a fantastic actoress like you things are not far off.

Keep on writing and let your ideas flow!

    keep smiling,
    Rajeev

    Shilpa,
Yes, as somebody else mentioned earlier, I still remember the seduction(rather a confrontation) scene with srk. They way you just turned our attention completely to you…… If you do the same amount of good work in all your future movies, wuld have to thank god for your presence in hindi cinema

  46. filmibhai on December 4th, 2007 12:51 am

‘wuld have to thank god for your presence in hindi cinema’

    this is overpraise b-)

I mean a beautiful woman deserves
    appropriate adjectives and appreciation,
    koi thermometer thodi hi hain?

  54. Incognito on December 13th, 2007 7:11 am

  55. Sagar on December 19th, 2007 2:49 pm
