The so-called ‘T20 of Indian Cinema’ (see passionforcinema.com/t20-of-indian-cinema-contest-at-40th-iffi/ for details) has thrown up Ritwik Ghatak’s Megha Dhaka Tara as the best Indian film ever.
Here’s the ‘Master List’ of India’s Top 20 films of all time that resulted from collating of individual Top 20 lists of 10 young film directors and 10 film critics (each of their individual lists were given 1-20 points, the top rated film being given 20 and the bottom given 1, and all these lists were combined / points added up to arrive at the ‘master list’):
Meghe Dhaka Tara – Ritwik Ghatak (Bengali, 1960)
Charulata – Satyajit Ray (Bengali, 1964)
Pather Panchali – Satyajit Ray (Bengali, 1955)
Sholay – Ramesh Sippy (Hindi, 1975)
Do Bigha Zameen – Bimal Roy (Hindi, 1953)
Pyaasa – Guru Dutt (Hindi, 1957)
Bhuvan Shome – Mrinal Sen (Hindi, 1969)
Garam Hawa – M S Sathyu (Hindi, 1973)
Mother India – Mehboob Khan (Hindi, 1957)
Ghattashradha – Girish Kasaravalli (Kannada, 1977)
Elippathayam – Adoor Gopalakrishnan (Malayalam, 1981)
Mughal-e-Azam – K Asif (Hindi, 1960)
Nayagan – Mani Ratnam (Tamil, 1987)
Kaghaz Ke Phool – Guru Dutt (Hindi, 1959)
Apu Trilogy (Pather Panchali 1955, Aparajito 1956, Apur Sansar 1959) -Satyajit Ray (Bengali)
Sant Tukaram – Vishnupant Govind Damle, Sheikh Fattelal (Marathi, 1936)
Jaane Bhi Do Yaro – Kundan Shah (Hindi, 1983)
Guide – Vijay Anand (Hindi, 1965)
Madhumati – Bimal Roy (Hindi, 1958)
Anand – Hrishikesh Mukherjee (Hindi, 1971)
Quite an interesting list, I must say. And surely would be a debatable one (though credit must go to organizers for trying to make the first ever such list). So, what’s your all-time T20 of Indian films?

cant list out 20, but personally I think Basu Bhattacharya/Amol Palekar movies like Chotti si Baat at times gets lost when a list of movies are being made… making an average man hero, make him feel for him, and making him a reflection of every viewer is as tough as projecting a family or a guy or a lady as subject and taking the viewers thru their lives pains and kinds…

Sholay,Anand..are these films that great to be included in this list?..I prefer Manirathnam’s Iruvar than Nayakan..

Sorry my previous comment is incomplete.I have given a list of 10 movies which I feel can all compete for a slot that could be created in the T20 thats been issued. My point is why have a seperate slot for Pather Panchali when there’s also a slot given to Apu Trilogy. So with an extra slot one of the movies mentioned above could also get in.

there is apu trilogy & pather pachali separately in the list…should not have been so…that would have opened up one more spot…also I’m not sure about Sholay because of originality issues…they also seem to have an aversion towards dark, crime based films as Satya deserved to be there along with Black Friday…& I agree with Do Aankhen Baarah Haath as pointed out by Azad…
loading...
I’d also like 2 see Suraj Ka Satwa Ghoda in such a list..have some special liking for this one…
loading...
I second the suraj ka saatwa ghoda. I would also love to see Ijazat in that list.
loading...
both very good options!!
loading...
It’s futile creating a list like this because our tastes keep changing. For example, there was a time when I was in love with Maniratnam’s films. Not any more. These days I like my films to be loud and not too grounded in reality so that I don’t have to strain myself watching them.
loading...
I’d like to have DCH on that list…..even if it’s not in the same league as the rest of the movies it’s impact has been phenomenal.
loading...
Bobby have also great mass effect,it does not mean that it deserved place.
loading...
I am not talking about it’s appeal among the audience. It spurned an entire generation of movies and changed the movie making style, also it was the launch vehicle for many actors.
It still is and remains the benchmark for all coming of age and friendship movies in India.
loading...
sad, but true!! the real coming of age was Vijeta (nihalani) for me!!
loading...
Anyone not missing Black friday, Bandit Queen, Kairee, Satya, Mahanadi, Koshish, Manichithrathazhu and Sagara Sangamam… I think pfc authors should make an attempt to make list of top 20 films in all regional languages (hindi included).. that would be more exhaustive and can help novices like me to view good indian cinema.. any initiatives???

In no order of preference:
1) Agneepath
Dombivili fast
2) Black Friday
3) Sholay
4) Swades

6) Alaap (amitabh bachchan)
7) Nayagan
9) Katha
10) Saraansh
11) Mirch Masala
12) Satya
13) Arjun

15) Ardh Satya
16) Goopie Gayen Bagha Bayen (Ray)
17) Taare Zameen Per
18) Parzania
19) Main Azaad Hoon.
20) Shool
I wish i knew more languages to appreciate South Indian Cinema. It’s my loss that I have not been able to understand some of the greatest films to have been made in the country due to this language barrier….
loading...
I share your thoughts in the same context about Bengali cinema (they ve always been considered an art powerhouse), Marathi cinema… for that matter even Malyalam cinema…. also heard Gujrati Plays have a lot of substance and stories that are beautifully woven and presented on stage… sadly havent gotten a chance yet to see even one of them…
loading...
I readily agree with the entries though I havent watched the few of the regional language ones.
And I have my own long list of important not to be missed movies at my site.
But surely a great topic to explore some non famous gems.
loading...
And why-o-why did u miss Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi
Thought it deserved a Top 10

Tab to..Sudhir Mishra’s Yeh Wo Manjil to Nahin is better than his HKA.

The prints for most of the films are pathetic…
Just read on Garm Hava official facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=wall&gid=367447941745 the film will be re-released in theaters and also remastered DVD will be available soon…
Good to see people taaking interest in oldie classics.
