Taare Zameen Par…this christmas dont buy anything for your kid…

…..but gift yourself something. Book two tickets for Taare Zameen Par. A simple and straight story told simply. Have little patience and sit through it. That will be the best gift your kids can have. And you will cherish too, something that you would wish somebody should have gifted your parents when you were a kid. You would have been somebody else.

My roomie has an eight year old girlfriend. His friend’s niece. And they are great freinds too. She dropped a bomb one day. You are not my boyfreind any more. My roomie asked why ? We dont kiss mouth to mouth. Boyfreinds-girlfreinds do that. I saw on tv. My roomie had no clue how to react. It was one more incident that scared me. Scared because in this ever changing world i wonder how to find answers to those complex kiddie questions. More so in big metros, where everything is on your face, you cant escape it. We now to go malls and multiplexes to spend time with our kids. And they have started enjoying that. tv, video games, mobile, sms, mms and now even the guns…everything is making headline in schools. Am more scared because I love kids. In our small little colony in not so big town where i grew up, our house was must for every new kid. Sometimes they would leave their children for hours without thinking much. Because the guy who would not eat anything at home would happily sit down with us to eat whatever we ate. Kids always look for people like them.

Taare Zameen Par questions all that what we dont think about our children in this fast paced life. Forget dyslexia. Its about a kids struggle how not to get cocooned in this world. Who will let his frog jump ? How can his fish survive in this dry world ? How can he balance his imaginary and real world. Its a world of toppers. Nobody loves a loser. Forget about even looking into the reasons of losing it. And then how an art teacher comes in his life and does what nobody else had done.

Put your hands together for the best debut of the year. Darsheel Safary says more with his eyes than his words. Can we please send the zayed n fardeen khans to him for a crash crash in acting. And what a relief to see so many not so known faces across the board. Not the usual character role actors. Tisca Chopra…i remember her last in hyderbad blues2…the seductress. WOW! what a transformation. The dad, Ishaan’s brother, his school freind and everyone else…its great casting put together. Aamir- the actor, producer, director. Its hattrick, Mr Perfectionist!! Take a bow. And three cheers for the man who wrote it..Amole Gupte. You need to be a kid at heart to write this one. I hope the kid doesnt grow up too fast. After all, its an industry of junk food. We develop the taste too soon.

And now the nitpicking….the imperfections in the perfect story. First half has repetitive visuals. You know after sometime, you can guess the visuals. Its like falling too much in love with your own work. Its little too long. Second…Why ? Why shankar mahadevan’s voice was used for a song in which the kid is thinking ? kya itna bura hoon maa….what a beautiful thought but give me kid’s voice pleaaaase. I dont want to hear a grown up voice there. Dyslexia ? I got the problem. And what a quick-fix solution was that ? One song and its done. Hmm. And the biggest issue that i have with the film…could not agree with the ending of the film. Its something that goes completely against the whole philosophy of the film. Throught out the film you hear something and in the end it goes in completely opposite direction. Wish it wasnt the same. Would love to read why Aamir chose this ending. Can you please write about this one in your blog Mr Khan ?

Dont forget to carry some tissues. It will get wet for sure. You know the trappings…those heart wrencing visuals put to senti-menti music. But dont control yourself. Get into it. Its a honest trap. This is the second film this year that made my eyes moist. First was namesake and some personal connection that i discovered there. And TZP will definitely take you back to your childhood days. So many stories flying out from all direction. A dear uncle of mine, always used to tell this BIG FISH story. His colleague was once asked how is his kid growing up ? He would stretch both his hands and say he has become this big. After one year, he was asked again. The reply was more or less the same. The distance between the hands would be bit more than previous year. Next year it was again the same. My uncle got confused. How is that possible. Why the answer would always be in the same fashion ? Nothing less, nothing more. Just the distance between the hands. He discovered that because of his business every morning he would leave early to catch his train, when his kid would be sleeping. By the time he would come back home in night, his kid would be sleeping again. In bed, between the sheets..its difficult to make out how the kid is growing up. You just can guess his height, the size and shape, like any other obejct. So, my uncle never let that happen to his kid. But he never got his son’s height right. Havent asked him if its a real story.

And as i wrote in my last post, yes its a big slap. Would it work ? Am hopeful. Because in my college hostel, every evening in the canteen room there used to be big fight over the remote control. Films..hindi, english, bengali…music channels, cricket or something else..which channel to watch ? But sundays, it used to be quiet. The unanimous choice used to be Tom and Jerry. I still enjoy that and dream of a school that Tagore always dreamt of, where subjects would not decide our career. Our hobby classes would make us choose our school.

(( oh by the way…m willing to sponsor Aditya Chopra’s tickets for this one. Because that man killed an all time favourite film of mine…Dead Poets Society. As he made it into Mohabbatein. Felt that he has never gone to any school. And Robin Williams…i still remember him as John Keating :-)))

Well written, loved reading it. “We dont kiss mouth to mouth. Boyfreinds-girlfreinds do that. I saw on tv.” you made me remember of ‘monsoon wedding’.

Even i witnessed such an incident. Our family was attending a marriage and nephew started telling about sex, kept shouting that these two people will do sex today , it was embracing at the same time he was correct too, he just didn’t know that such subject are tacit. My uncle-auntly were confused what to do, they dint choose to beast him but to take him out of marriage hall. Well not because they were very mature but cos my nephew was a heart patient and doctors told not to make him cry :”>:)>-:)>-:)>-:)>-:)>-:)>-:)>-:)>-:)>-:)>-

    hello anupam!!
unforunately most of the subjects are chosen with the objectives in mind.
so in this way a subject never everremains a subject but more appropiately it is just another element breaking up from a compound thatwe may term as dulaity.
its really very difficult to seperate the object from the subject or vice versa….
i wont say its impossible but for that thing we firstgot toknow the link betwwen the subjectand the object..
tagore would have been more than happy tosee people choose their careers with either the subject being given greater consideration or the object beinggiven greater weightage..
but unfortunately none of these things happens with a poor soul because he remains entangled within the subject\object dilemna.

he simply doesnt know what to do withthsi evergrowing web of mishaps.
one moment one chooses a thing by just keeping the subject of the matter in mind…butthe very next moment he finds himself stuck with the object of the spirit.
tagore neverever had anyproblems with monoism but was himself too stuck in dualism…
in the later stages of his life as happens with everyone..so happened with tagore..
he was afraid of starting anything new..being afraid of the conflicts thatmay arise out off that venture..
gitanjali was written during a period when tagore had tried to cleanse himself off the conflicts risisng within him like waves…
and from where did those conflicts originate from?
tagore was in a deppression for a period of around 5-years during which he had written gitanjali…he had duringthat period fallen in love with his brothers wife…and unfortunately during thatsame period two of his sons had died just after their births..
now this was the subject for tagore and that was the time he started asking himself the question :which relates to the objective behind his mourning for a span of 5-years..
he started looking at everything as an object…in order to get deeper into the subject..
that is what intellectual people do!!
at that moment he was an intellectual but as the process moved on further he started seeing things clearly…
in his later years he was very close to oneness that is spirituality..and had completely broken the shackles of intellectualism that had chained him down for some good reasons!!
its very good if only the subject is chosen as ones school off thought butalways beware of the subject\object pair that may regenerate in someone just to exorcise him and ones future..

    hi nadir…

the quote was verbatim taken from phoenix nu’s post..n since i was so touched by it…i said touchwood….because that is what i hv felt all my life…and was delighted to see when the same was expressed in words by phoenixNU n validated by tagore himself…

..by the way…let me analyse this sentence..if i may..for u…!..well phoenix nu or tagore intended to state a simple thing here…and it has nothing to do with metaphysics,post-modernism n monoism-dualism redux…as you seem to mistake it for…

..the writer says the “subject” stands for subjects taught in classroom…and yes..it is indeed the case…and though the movie does not attack the logical subjects like mathematics, science…but it just presents a case for imagination, arts and following your passion…

..having grown up in the same town as author n read in the same schools…i can more than identify with the hostility towards imagination and hobbies n conformism towards “wrote” answers and the right subjects..

    hello anupam,

my last post was not about metaphysics or post-modernism.
had i even tried to write about metaphysics i would have found myself flying in “alice in wonderland”.
it was a simple way of saying “no” to a “subject” that had been wriiten without even having a brief knowledge of it!the subject in my last post was tagore..
i didnt mean to offend anyone even though offence is always the best defece..isnt it!1

    now regarding the movie!!
i havent watched the movie yet but still i can say with full affirmation that neither mr.amol gupte and mr.aamir khann has got the ever required courage to make a movie of a kind..in which they can simply attack the “logical” subjects like mathematics and science.
    now then another question arises!!
can a movie really be made by attacking subjects like mathematics and science…
why not!!if a movie like “waking life” can be made;-then why not try to potray something huge by simply exploring these two subjects in consideration..
now this is what we call real art…..having no limitations…at all..
and anyone really passionate about “art”..please verify your own spiritual mountain..that is for sure present in everyone…if one is realy afraid then…god bless..
limitations are made by us and destroyed by us..and its very difficult indeed to live without any limitations..
maybe this is what it is and can be answered by the who by remaining glued to the which, when, what and the ever divine WHY?

..my simple take is that since mathematics and science are so much impressed upon in india’s cultural set up..more so in smaller towns and pre-globalisation era…that people in communication and languages who hv sufferred from bias..tend to vocalise it on the celluloid in form of a movie…

..think of it..even now in small towns of bihar n u.p. a boy who shows his love for poetry or takes humanities as a subject is looked down upon..but fortunately things are changing for good…

…well..for me personally physics and mathematics were highest source of intellectual stimulation..while i am pathetic at art…i hv had my sense of”aha”..n loss of time ..when i solved a physics numerical after going through beautiful equations..

… it is just one thing that most of teachers in india make these subjects so dry that it becomes an excercise in boredom..if u want to please check out physics lectures in MIT by walter levine..or read mathematician’s apology by G.H. hardy in which ramanujan claims that he sees God in equations…come to think of it einstein the theoretical physicist was so imaginative..that he turned entire classical physics on its head within few months of inspired brilliance…

..though movies hv been made like good Will hunting which tell us that talent should not come in way of passion..

    @anupam,
mathematics has indeed been a completely different route towards salvation!!
take in consideration the prime numbers…(divisible only by itself and one)…this indeed signifies the oneness isnt it!!
or on the contrary we can even take in consideration the graph of an exponenetial function which in someway signifies the learning characteristics of a homo-sapien
relations,functions..(one to one mapping)…and the significance of a function in a given equation of unknowns….
mathematics is an everlonging quest to determined the undetermined..isnt it!!
and especially functions..the backbone ofthe whole of modern mathematics..
check henry poincarres equation and the way he had arrived to that equation..
    euclids geometry
euclid had started of his derivations by considering the fact that from a certain given point one can draw innumerable number of parallel lines..(whichwas wrong)..but even then he started of with that belief that it was right..
well,i would keep on talking about geometry and mathematics in the whole…..but that really does not mean that its futility can be undermined…
    physics//the divine thermodynamic principles…
the entropy equation…telling us that all is one…
andfinally einstiens final great attemptt to unify the laws of universe..all these are indeed interesting but leastdesirable in india..but why?
after all india has got the maximum number of engineers present in te world..isnt it?

oops..i think i went too far…isntthisa site for cinema lovers and goers and reviewers..e.t.c…

    hi phoenixnu,

its not about attacking people having the courage to do anything..but more appropiately its about freedom..
well i would prefer not to get into this thing deeper..because then i would keep on writing like their never was any end to it..and i suppose their never would be any end to it..
in simple ways i would like you to watch the movie “easy rider”.
you will get the answer from peter fonda and jack nicholson..
but that does not mean that their answer would be my answer but their answer “could” always be my answer!! who knows..
if you have done it then and only then can i talk about freedom and representatives of freedom..
you must have surely watched “motorcycle diaries”…
you will get the answer by comparing both these movies with you being on a neutral right from the moment your thought process starts performing as to your desired level..

    @phoenix Nu’..ya shortened my name..jus 4 convenience..:)

@ nadir..well there is indeed inner beauty in physics and mathematics…and to think of it how much they are related…even mathematics the most abstract intellectual excercise…sometimes gets so instrumental in creating new theories of physics..the most practical intellectual excercise…

    just think about it

..riemann’s curved space geometry (1860)inspires..einstein’s general theory of relativity(1905)…

…euler’s beta function for harmonics of string…inspires string theory..presently the foremost theory claiming to be the unifying theory in physics…

..but wait a sec how physics gets back…the distribution of energy level of mesons provide a distribution for the prime number distribution in riemann’s zeta function…(1992)..and of course you must be fully aware how prime numbers play a large part in network security

…those who approach mathematics n physics with love often marvel at the beauty and one-ness of universe…

…i would recommend more such books..music of primes by de suoty, on riemann’s hypothesis by derbyshire…and of course elegant universe by brian greene…the good thing is you can get these books free online..just google their names…with rapidshare, scribd or e bookee…that is how i read them..hehe..enjoy..:)

    p.s.1.

1….do engineers have passion for mathematics and physics…really..?..then why do they sell out and go work as managers for tooth paste and soap companies…why does a country producing 25,000 computer science graduates a year produce 25 phd.s in computer science a year…why dont we see then a single b.tech iit string theorist..

    2. as i said earlier passion and talent are very different things…well i dont denounce them…but our society places too much importance on livelihood rather than passion…we produce only sofisticated soft ware programmers n bug-fixers not passionate people..who with all their talent love for equations and numbers sell out…!

That was to boost his confidence as Ammir said in one of the scenes … “Us bachche ke confidence ki toh Dhazziyaan udd jaati hongi .. ”
Aamir wanted to show that how his assistance eventually made the kid a beeter student and won him Kudos from the whole school …
