Ardha Satya : Amrish Puri, a policeman 24X7

It will not be suffice to say that Amrish Puri plays only a callous father of Anant Velankar (Om Puri) in the film, Ardha Satya or the film shows him as a cruel father only. It will not do a proper justice to this interesting character. Things are not so simple and straight with this character that we may define his character as a harsh father of AV. Its not possible for Vijay Tendulkar to write a simple character that has been given only one characteristic. His characters have to be completely complex in nature because they belong to real life. His characters are seen in real life. Its not possible for Govind Nihalani to show his characters seized under monotonous behaviour and his characters have to face the volatile conditions and behaviour because life is like that only and prototypes don’t work here. That’s the beauty of films directed …

On-Screen Dads

As always, June features Father’s Day—while you are busy honoring and paying tribute to your daddy dearest, let’s also take a quick look at some of the top Bollywood actors who have portrayed the role of a father on-screen (list in no particular order, and, no, this list is NOT comprehensive).

1. Anupam Kher—Anupam Kher certainly knows how to excel in the role of a father. Whether it be Khosla Ka Ghosla!, Chaahat, Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain or Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge he has always given his on-screen children reason to sing “Mera Daddy Cool Cool Cool!”

2. Alok Nath—Hum Aapke Hain Koun…!, Hum Saath-Saath Hain, Pardes, Taal and Vivah—bechaara Alok is an actor who always seems to get stuck with the role of a sensitive and worried father.

3. Amitabh Bachchan—Now here is a …

“Professor, it really is a Dead End!”

Well I hope so!! LaBeouf’s rather innocuous line in the movie, appears significantly prophetic in the end.

SPOILER ALERT!!!

Unless you are in some weird parallel universe with no media or internet, you already know - the whip cracking archaeologist is back! And the premise is we are supposed to be happy and lap it all up. I was all for it, lapping up the whole platter about an hour back. I am however left with an uneasiness. I don’t feel like retching after the meal, but i just don’t have the fulfillment of a tasty one either. Part nauseous and part filling, my quandary is topped up by the incessant raves I hear about this sumptuously bland installment.

I heard the Spielberg-Lucas-Ford triumvirate say over and over again that Indy wont be back unless they come up with that perfect gem of …

Nishant : Vijay Tendulkar’s illustrious entry in to hindi cinema!

Great and powerful and impressive writers possess one thing for sure and that is the art to present some stories in their own words/ways/manners and though its very much possible that they are taking inspirations from mythology or stories, already told in the past, but they will weave the plot in such a way that theme of their plots will be successful in presenting issues prevalent in the contemporary times.

Great writers have their strong control over observation of the three phases of the time, the past, the present and the future. They have ability to use their own mother tongue, no matter its not recognised world wide, to tell their stories and these stories will have global impact and in some manner will cover human being all over the world. They have deep observation of what has been going on and what may happen in future and they weave …

NAYAK (2001)- SHANKAR AT HIS BEST

Nayak(2001)NAYAK (2001)- SHANKAR AT HIS BEST

I like larger than life movies. I love movie with all commercial masala in it. But condition is that it should be well balanced. It should have fast pace, powerful dialogues, performances and excellent technique. Nayak-The Real Hero fulfills all those expectations. It is intense, emotional as well as humorous and fast paced.

Shankar has got grip in handling true commercial movies. I have seen his Hum se hai Muqabla, Gentleman, Hindustani and Aparichit. (All dubbed in hindi). Though all of his films have almost same story (a common man fighting against corrupt system by having special power); he treats the subject differently and make audience engaged in the film as well as enjoy the film.

As per my POV Nayak-The Real Hero is Shankar’s best work till date. The major difference and innovative …

REMEMBERING… AMRISH PURI

REMEMBERING… AMRISH PURI
AMRISH PURI

It was one sentence in the post of George Thomas on Dhaal “It is with Pilot Baba that this film strikes gold” made me desperate to think and write about Amrish Puri.

Very few actors have that capability that when they come on screen, then concentration of audience immediately shift to them. You forget the opposite actor; your eyes ignore other actors and just concentrate on that particular actor. Amrish Puri was such an actor.

I have grown up watching Amrish Puri’s films, seeing him as bad guy and then turning to loving father and grand father. Whenever I used to surf channels, and if I come to see Amrish Puri, I just can not escape that scene. He is one of the my all time favourite actors of hindi cinema.

If 60s was the …

RAJKUMAR SANTOSHI - “SAABASH MERE CHITEY!”

RAJKUMAR SANTOSHI

Caution: Don’t expect too much stylish English.

RAJKUMAR SANTOSHI-”SAABASH MERE CHITEY!”

When did the last time you get the effect of drinking Glucon D? Your blood got hot? Released lots of Adrenalin in your body?….. Perhaps after watching A RAJKUMAR SANTOSHI MOVIE.

There is lots of energy and dhaka dhak high speed involved in his films that you can not close your eyes for a second or could not get chance of escaping for popcorn or toilet.

Rajkumar Santoshi is a director who does not care about his films’ box office results. He follows his heart and makes convincing message oriented and entertaining films in typical Bollywood format and so is one of the my favorite directors after Hrishida and Gulzarsaab and shares same slot with Mukul S. Anand, Vijay Anand etc.

As per my knowledge, he is son …
