Last week’s release Dostana has been well received by both, the masses and the critics.The movie is far from being great cinema, but yes it is hilarious at times and overall it is fun.I was in complete splits on the gabbar singh Joke and couple of more jokes.I don’t have any problems with it getting good reviews and three and four stars, but what pisses me off is that it being called as a bold movie and a movie which takes leaps ahead in depicting homosexuality, seriously , does it? How can jokes on gays and gays shown in stereotypical type in any way help to change the mindset of average Indian who treats homosexuality as a disease.

Just as the end credits were rolling I managed to latch on to the name of the publicity firm for Dostana. It was‘Hype’- no kidding, I am dead serious. By the way, the firm has indeed done a good job. With slick promos and clever chat shows this first ever full length ‘Indian Gay Comedy’ has certainly managed to raise the public interest to unprecedented levels.

Just a few days ago, I even read a news report where the chief spokesmen for Indian gay community were fervently hoping that Dostana would bring a change in general public’s discriminatory attitude towards gays! Many years ago Raj Kapoor and Padmini had danced on the song Begani Shaadi mein Abdullah Deewana. Song was very much part of the film and Raj Kapoor and Padmini were not mere imported material in the film but they were leading man and woman of the film.

Helen used to be there in the films to dance on one or two songs and people used to enjoy and appreciate her songs and dances but her dances also looked part of the films.
