the KING OF COMEDY starts blogging

One of the few who knows the secret art of bridging art and commerce, the man who can get a dead man laughing (and even cry!) via the story he weaves… please extend a very warm welcome to Kundan Shah, who opens his diary on PFC and starts by writing about… what else… comedy :) Enjoy… and please do spread the word around.

Comedy Films Today

If I say Agreement 123 (Atomic Energy Agreement with the US) reflects the comedies made today in our country, you will call me mad. Where is the connection? But it has. Well, we are in the process of being Americanised. That’s a general term to signify consumerism apart from other serious repercussions depending upon your world view. However, the fundamental tenet of a consumerist culture is that everything is a product. And the function of any product (film) is to serve only its basic need – in today’s case it is entertainment. Now, there is nothing wrong with entertainment. There never has been. To entertain in itself is a great art. And yet “to entertain” in today’s times, there is a difference – there is no aesthetics involved. So, no qualms in making films based on videos, rip-offs, lift-offs, etc, etc. Aptly today’s films are called popcorn movies. Eat the …

Title: 3 Idiots

Rarely have I seen such a film poster with so much simplicity yet with so much to say, visually at least!

Is it the colors, is it the font, is it the guy’s close hair cut or is it the t-shirt in its multiple folds?

or is it the name right at the bottom?

If only the film lives up to the promise.

I am reminded of the some of the most beautiful words I had come across, and something which I have believed in, and said in my own style quite often.

1. Purists/elitists read book.
2. Purists/elitists love book and praise book.
3. Purists/elitists find that common man too likes book.
4. Purists/elitists hate that common man likes book.
5. Purists/elitists hate …

Prakash Jha : Deepti Naval and I never cherished any negativity between us

Second part of the interview of Director Prakash Jha(PJ), taken by Ajay Brahmatmaj (AB), is presented here.

——————————————————————————————————————————-
[Following is the translation of the Hindi Interview and may not do full justice to the original interview so to read the exact sayings of Prakash Jha, one should go through the original interview. This is simply a trial to expose the interview to those readers who can not read Hindi at all]
——————————————————————————————————————————–

AB: You still make documentaries but if we talk about feature films then how this journey was started and why and when did you think that you should make feature films?

PJ: I was thinking about making feature films also. I had written scripts for the two stories of Shaival, Kalchakra and Daamul. I was searching producers for Daamul. Man Mohan Shetty had become my friend by then. He said …

Actor or Director: Part 1

Its been quite sometime, since i have written something on here, more so for me being lazy. But, i have been doing a lot of You-tube’ing and have found quite a few gems out there…for instance i was watching a bit of Pancham, a bit of Koffee With Karan episode of the Director’s special and also with Farhan Akhtar…these are the things these days which are keeping me in good spirits…

When i was watching the episode of the Director’s special of KWK…one thing that i did recollect was..how much i have changed…my perspective as a film viewer..no longer do i crave to listen or see what the actor has to say about the movie..no longer do i crave to see the behind the scenes..or “on location” bytes, which fortunately or unfortunately i was so eager to watch/listen when i was growing up as a kid…their could be quite …

Meeting Kundan Shah - Talking about Films

Meeting Kundan Shah

Was evening when i got the call from him. He invited me over to his office in Bandra west. Reaching there, the area seemed straight out of the Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’s catholic goan setting.

I rang the bell and waited darte darte. Was expecting an old man resting on his arm chair …. probably bittered by the world etc etc…

His assistant opened the door and asked me to wait. I was made to sit and a cup of tea awaited me. Not bothering to drink it, i preferred to instead look at wall which was adorned with posters of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na, Kya Kehna, Hum to Mohabbat Karega, Teen Behanein (3 sisters, his yet unreleased film). There was somewhere a poster of Kaagaz Ke Phool..with a mesmerised Guru Dutt kissing an …

JAAGO MOHAN PYAARE!

JAAGO MOHAN PYAARE!

“It is very easy to criticise anyone’s work than doing the actual work”.

The old and experienced players of hindi cinema…started their career by redefining the rules of typical bollywood film making. But some how lost their golden touches, cinematic abilities, and trapped in their own success and intelligence. They are thinking they are making right stuff and are with new generation of film making. But they might dont know there are many dark horses trying to make films in their own way and if so called genius film makers would not wake out from dreams,. they might go for long sleep.

* J.P. DUTTA- started with bang- Ghulami. But confined in his own brilliance. Prisoned in desert, thakurs and revenges(Batwaara, Kshatriya). Somehow reborn in Border but again captured in the same prison of long songs, wars and cross border issues. Umrao Jaan was like doordarshan serial. Though his …
