Ameesha, Kareena, Soha : Whose intellect is needed on screen in Hindi cinema ?

Some time ago a famous Director who has earned his reputation as an intellectual director also, said, during a private talk with someone, while asked to give his take on two actresses, that he can not have a conversation with a certain famous actress as she is too dumb for that.

Its immaterial who he was and about whom he had said but important thing is this that a wise director thought in those terms.

Nevertheless his sayings gave push to an interesting topic.

Being a director he needed an intellectual actress on sets, who could talk on any topic under the sun with a good wisdom but who could not bring life and true justice to the character given to her or he needed an actress who might not be thoroughly intellectual in real life but who could make her character alive on screen?

What a director demands and what …

Kaajal / Meena Kumari & Ram Maheshwari :: Maachis / Tabu & Gulzar

Ram Maheshwari made four films, namely Kaajal, Neelkamal, Karmayogi and Chambal Ki kasam, having Raaj Kumar, either in lead roles or in a substantial role and Kaajal was his first directorial venture and for any new and that too first time director, star cast consisting of big names like Meena Kumari, Raaj Kumar, Padmini, Durga Khote and Mehmood should have been a matter of proud. Dharmendra too had become a rising star by then, riding over the success of films like Anpadh, Bandini, Neela Akash, Ayi Milan Ki bela and Haqiqat. Thoughh he had not played there main lead but a side hero but in all the films he had got open praises from audience and critics alike.

Kaajal’s story written by famous novelist Gulshan Nanda and it was quite a circular story and plot consisted of many rounded twists.

Padosan : The perfect antidote of sad mood !

Padosan is a sure shot killer of sad and depressive mood. With the height of buffoonery, but a classy one, involved in the film, its success rate as a mood enhancer is very high.

Padosan is to enjoy and laugh without any inhibition.

Padosan has got good dialogues and lyrics by famous poet and author Rajendra Krishan, good acting by Kishoir Kumar, Mehmood, Sunil Dutt, Om Prakash and Saira Bano and other actors, good music by R D Burman and good direction by Jyoti Swaroop. Jyoti Swaroop has got a good thriller film Parwana also to his credit.

Padosan is a gift of Producer Mehmood to the hindi cine lovers.

Mehmood was one of the first persons who gave independent charge to R D Burman to create music for his films in 60s.

Just 5-10 minutes in to the film and a wonderful song is there….

Rab Ne Bana Dee Jodi <=> Man Pasand/My Fair Lady/Pygmalion ?

There are speculations
that Aditya Chopra’s third directorial venture Rab ne bana dee jodi (RNBDJ) may have inspirations from My Fair Lady (MFL), the 1964 musical film.

Classic film MFL, was based on the musical My Fair Lady, which itself had roots in the play, Pygmalion, written by George Bernard Shaw.

Basu Chaterjee had also adapted the play of Bernard Shaw in to the film, Man Pasand.

Basu Da’s Man Pasand, was perfectly an Indianised version of the play. Man Pasand, though it also followed the same content as MFL but it was still different in treatment and thus it could stand as an independent film in its own way.

Though even star cast has not been finalized by now for the RNBDJ but media has started the speculations. And the only poster released by now does not give any clue that it may have …
