Nikal ja saamne se nahin to maar dalunga!

Thus gentle words of endearment did Paresh Rawal speak to his make up man of eight years on the first morning the beard found his cheeks on the sets of Oye Lucky.

The beard was a problem. Paresh Rawal hates putting on a false beard. His skin can’t take it. He can’t talk. He shuts off. He hates growing one even more, and even if he did grow one, by the time he would grow one the size we needed we would all have reached dotage.

As soon as the beard was fixed, the generally happy, relaxed mood of the set changed. We had become used to a Paresh who was easy, patient, chilled, forever on the sets, standing at his mark happily even between lighting adjustment, benevolently chiding the crew to get …

OYE PROMOTION PROMOTION OYE

Can I risk saying that the part of films I hate most, is promoting it?

It’s not about the ego, it’s not about projecting an image, it’s not about being lazy or anything else you might think. The truth is, I love making movies but I just don’t have it in me to sell them. I am an actor not a salesman, but most people seem to think that the two are one and the same.

I find promoting extremely tiring. It basically means I have to answer the same questions (and there are usually three at the most) a 1000 times, in the span of 8 to 9 hours.

It usually goes like this –

1. What is the film about?

2. How was it working with the director?

3. Are you having/had an affair …

Am I a funny guy or what?

Am I a funny guy or what?

My most unsettling experience after the release of Khosla ka Ghosla was seeing the audience laugh.

They were laughing at places where Jaideep and I had never intended them to laugh. They were not laughing at the places where we were expecting them to get the bends guffawing. Then they came out sniggering, smiling, giggling – and if it hadn’t been for the satisfied sigh that we could hear from everyone of them – we would have been really puzzled.

You see, I never made KKG as a comedy. I made it as the story it was, and life as I know it – funny, sad, bitter, sweet, quiet, noisy, but never predictable. That is life, isn’t it?

The real comedy came later, after KKG took off. Not a month would go by when …

Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! “is” A True Story Part 2

This post forms the concluding part on the material we’ve gathered that Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! is based on a true story. For those who came in late, read Part 1 here

In one of our collected documents we found this interesting piece, which actually details how Devinder Singh aka Bunty aka Superchor worked on his targets

NEW DELHI: One morning in March, well-known chartered accountant Anil Mehra’s daughter woke up in her first-floor bedroom and looked straight into the eyes of a stranger. The unflappable stranger, wearing a smart tracksuit, spoke to her in smooth English. “Good morning, ma’am.” Then, as the lady feigned sleep, he calmly picked up her jewellery, placed casually on a table-top after coming home from a party, cleaned up valuable antiques in the living room, got into one of the family’s Opel cars and drove away from their GK-I …

Oye Lucky Lucky Oye “is” A true story Part 1

There have been rumors ever since Oye Lucky Lucky Oye was announced that it is based on a true story. Last week some readers too commented and emailed us about such rumors. So we asked around, did some google-ing and called up some friends and a few hours later - we had about a few dozen pages on the true person - Bunty, that Abhay Deol’s character in the movie is based upon. Here’s Part 1 of the information we’ve gathered…

Beginning with…

Who is Bunty?

Popularly Known as Super Chor Devender @ Bunty
Native state: Punjab.
Appearance: Fair, well built, of pleasant appearance.
Education: Studied till IX std, very well versed in English
Convicted of: 500 cases of Burglaries.

OLLO Music : Much beyond your average Jugni’s and Billo’s (with streaming teasers)

There are so many reference points for ‘Punjabi’ in films. You tend to go about it stereotypically. Dhaba. Butter Chicken. Lassi. Aloo da paratha. Truck drivers. Jalandhar. Patiala. Phagwada. And so on.

The question is, what defines it? The culture, the language, the mannerisms, the way of life… and the music and dance that finds itself in an exhortation of life. We have seen umpteen films on Punjabi culture, mostly taking Punjabi as a fallback and moving on with whatever story they got, with a modest dose of naach-gaana, bhangra et al. sometimes the film goes awry and the director thinks ‘Punjabi!’ and lo and behold you get yourself a dhamaka item number. Universally acceptable oft-pointless song and dance. Oye balle oye. Bhangra paao ji paaji, giddha paao ni kudiyon.

Let’s take the discussion further. Punjabi pop. Daler Mehndi. Malkit Singh. London Brigade. You think of the words Billo, Jugni, …

Oye Lucky Lucky Oye : The Music Video

Dibakar Banerjee is back. After Khosla Ka Ghosla with Oye Lucky Lucky Oye. PFC received this music video from the movie and like Dibakar’s last comic outing this one too looks like it’s gonna be one hell of a ride. News is that Paresh Rawal has a “triple” role in it, and has personally mentioned that Mumbai Meri Jaan and Oye Lucky Lucky Oye are the two movies he was proud to be working in this year. And that is quite loaded statement!

The movie releases in the US on November 26th and opening worldwide on November 28th.

Oye Dibakar Banerjee Oye!!!

Interviewed by IBN for their “Rising Talent” series, here’s the hotshot director of Khosla ka Ghosla, Dibakar Banerjee, who’s ready with his next whacky movie that everyone who’s seen is raving about - Oye Lucky Lucky Oye. Dibakar talks about Khosla ka Ghosla, his association with Jaideep Sahni, the weird ending he designed for Khosla and which was changed later, Ray, Scorcese and many other things. A treat for Khosla fans! Here’s Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4 of the interview. Tip : DPac

Khosla Ka Ghosla Director’s Next Film

It’s been a long time coming.

Just read an article on IndiaFM.com that Dibakar Banerjee, Director of the critically acclaimed, immensely likeable film “Khosla Ka Ghosla” has finally announced his next film.

Titled “Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye” (kickass title IMHO) the film stars the talented Mr. Abhay Deol as a thief who, as per Banerjee himself, “starts a normal thief and then later climbs up the status graph and becomes a very rich and well known crook.”

The film also co-stars Neetu Chandra (of Traffic Signal… we’ll conviently forget that Garam Masala was infact her debut film) and, what seems to be the ace up Banerjee’s sleeve, Paresh Rawal in an interesting Triple Role.

If Anupam Kher, Ranvir Shoery, Parvid Dabas, Navin Nischol and even Tara Sharma put in some stellar performances, one looks forward to even more from “Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye” (which I’m guessing will be referred to …
