Mumbai Cutting – A City Unfolds, a potpourri of short films created by a combination of 11 top-notch and newbie directors as an ode to the ‘dream city’ of India, is an important work of cinema in more ways than one despite its uneven character. Modelled on Paris, j t’aime (Paris, I Love You), a compendium of 18 short films made by 21 directors as a tribute to the spirit to the City of Love, and its under-production sequel New York, I Love You, it takes a varied look at the city which in recent times have been more in news for its rain-water floods and anti-North Indian stance of Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navanirman Sena rather than its other multi-hued characteristics that make it the Maximum City.

I recently met Manjeet Singh, an author on PFC in Mumbai. We had a long and interesting chat about films and particularly on his feature film project.
As he wants to make to make a short film first and wanted to understand the basic differences between a full length feature and a short length feature, so instead of writing only to him, I thought I should share it with all on PFC.

Short films are where I come from and they have helped me formulate my style in cinema. They have also taught me to tell stories easily and swiftly. My first short film ‘Le Cochon’ (see Photo) ( 35mm/12′/French) was selected at the Clermont Ferrand short film festival in 1996 and I also represented France at the Locarno film festival in the ‘Leopards de Demain’ section of the short film competition …

….thats what i told myself. I am also struggling with my words these days. Like me, i know so many who want to write. And the keyword is “want” and not “write”. Because we are more concerned about why, whom, what, where,how, for whom ? Enough.
