Tepid Summer

Football season has ended – cannot wait for Euro Championship to start, though. I will talk about cinema, don’t worry. There are no decent Cricket matches happening. I will talk about cinema, don’t worry. Australia in West Indies doesn’t sound exciting and England v New Zealand has potential to be exciting but without any spice. I will talk about cinema, don’t worry. IPL sucks. I will talk about cinema, don’t worry. I prefer Stick Cricket’s 5Five. I will talk about cinema now. Feel dizzy?

So what am I going to do in the summer? Watch Films? I suppose I can. I can catch up on some movies that I haven’t watched. But, I am sick of watching films. I haven’t watched that many films, though. It don’t excite me anymore. It doesn’t take me anywhere. I have grown up. Films are just film – static.

You can tell its summer by just looking at the current promos – Jaane Tu, Kismet Konnection, De Taali, Hastey Hastey, Miliege Miliege, etc. They all are summery, peppy, mushy, & pukey.

I was actually looking forward to Jaane Tu.. ; the promos looked good and the soundtrack is, erm, they have played it safe although it ends on a hatke note. I like Sukhi’s Sober song, Aditi song – the flute in the song is what I like and A R Rahman’s Jazzy song. However, expected better stuff from A R Rahman, to be honest. But, he can be excused (Yes, I am biased) for churning this soundtrack out and Aada. What on earth is that? Can someone tell me?

Then there is my Ayeshia Takia’s De Taali, which is directed by E.Nivas. Why is E.Nivas never included in that X Generation Director list? Is it cos he is sort of an old skool type a filmmaker? I think, he will be huge. His time will come. Don’t know what this movie is about but from promo it seems like a Sex Comedy? Not another one. Please.

But, I am no more a tapori, that I would find those movies interesting. Or it just could be Jab We Met syndrome? I think, I had enough of watching those sort of movies. I want to watch some humri biradi ki movies. Not art movies, though.

Sarkar Raj, I could find a solace in that film, if it is true to the promos. But the promo of Sarkar Raj is same as of Sarkar but with a bit of RGV style Dishoom Dishoom. So is Sarkar Raj a slight extension of Sarkar? Oh, it has Bachchan Parivar in it, so expect all melodramatic PR shite from them prior to the release and if they have that sort of behavior in the film, then……..

Indiana Jones is back, though! The film title has ‘India’ in it. The content is masala. So don’t missunderstood it as any chalu Indian Masala film. The production value of Indiana Jones are much better than Indian Masala films. Hence, the result is much better than Indian Masala Films. Now we have money, so it should not be long before someone illegally copies the Indiana series and presents it in Bollywood Masala, that it would embarrass you.

Terrestrial TV channels were doing a re-run of Indiana series and those films are still good. Cos its summer, not that new Indiana film was releasing. They will soon do a re-run of Bond series. I prefer Indiana to Bond. Cos Bond is a B[p]oond.

Soon people will be doing Half-Time review of Hindi Film Industry of Year 2008. What is their to review about?! In those six words, I have done the half-time review. I will waste a few more words on that. Nah. I will let others do the honor.

I guess I will have to do with the cheap reality shows on Indian channels. Fortunately, I only have one Indian channel, so I will be exposed to minimum reality shows. All Indian reality shows are about signing or dancing. Don’t people get bored of it? I have never got into Dancing reality shows – its camp – and people only do kuda-kude. But, I do like watching signing reality shows. I have been watching Warr Parrivaar and I like the concept – semiclassical songs of that show. Good to see classically trained people getting a platform to show their talent. And we do need some semi-classical singers in the music industry, which has run out of new ideas. How long will take before a new channel starts doing a semi-classical dance reality shows? Also film-stars on TV? They all need to take a sanyas especially Shah Rukh Khan.

I feel like I am under a pile of Kachra, so I just want to throw all of it on you people. Some relief. It is going to be a long summer, a tepid summer. Unless….

    BTW,what do you mean by having seen of Jab We Met type of movies?Pretty much an evidence of how vacuous a movie-goer you are.How many movies(let alone Bollywood)talk about ‘Man’s place in the world’(I can only think of Elizabethtown)?How many romantic comedies use Dostoevskian concepts to put across conceits?
    And dismissing movies without giving them a chance(perhaps you like to declare them for the philsitines or taporis??)makes you just about as uniform and philistine as those for whom you possess this contempt…
    I find you banality disturbing.

    French, you have drunk a wrong kind wine again, have ya? I haven’t dismissed any movies. Read it all again. If you still think I have dismissed any movies, then read it all again. And if you still think I have dismissed any movies, then yes, I have. I find those promos tepid.

    What concept? Who? I only know about The Balanced Scorecard. Do you know anything about that? I think you do. Don’t know the gibberish you talkin’ about, though.

    Me? Disturbing? Nah. It must be my name. But, at least, I don’t keep changing that. Cos I is Honhaar.

    Pavan-ji,

    Kachra’s price must have gone high as well, so there must be nothing to eat. I have a long list of DVDs, which I am definitely going to buy in summer and going to watch/ it. And am going to check out V. Shantaram’s films.

    Anand,

    Am not a big fan of Superheroes; it don’t excite me. There are going to be some animation flicks, though…..

    Nillohit,

    Nah.

    ” summery, peppy, mushy, & pukey”-Pretty much sounds like you want to hate(?) them already.
    And I expected the conversation to take this turn,because expecting a cogent rebuttal from you is as good as expecting RGV to make a film on a fully developed idea!

    “Don’t know the gibberish you talkin’ about, though.”
    But,I did know that you don’t.Existentialism?Alienation?DO these words fit in w.r.t Jab We Met?Try thinking..

    And BTW,just the framing of the last shot in the Kismat Konnection promo should have any avid film buff excited..Did you manage to read the symbolism Hoonhaar?

    French,

    I have judged promos and haven’t liked the promos. You think that is wrong and that implies I hate the movies? Then, what is the purpose of promos? I don’t want to watch romantic genre movies in the summer.

    Symbolism in Kismet Konnection? They have more more money than Murder Team had, hence they haven’t gone with bare back shot. Is that what you were looking for?

  13. French French says:

    DPac:The composition of this static shot is very classic, almost like a kitsch romantic postcard : the beach, the sea, the sky, a couple side by side on the beach both wearing pure white clothes(and its not a bare back shot!Good catch HG!)…

    The screen is divided horizontaly in 3 strips (sky, sea, beach) with different colors and textures. The beach limit marks the middle, twice as thick as the “sea” and “sky” areas above the mediane. The unity of colors reinforces this grouping, sky and sea are light blue, bright, transparent, ethereal, while the beach is rough, opaque and textured.

    Now the symbols. Each area has its figure that sits on the lower limit, as if stacked on top of the strip below.

    (1) Beach + Man => Earth (materialism)
    (2) Sea + Woman => Water (desire)
    (3) Sky + Horizon => “Heaven” (ideal) / faraway / dream / Love
    What the promo also does is give us the two together throughout,and in the final shot the two (still together)somewhat separated,as seen from the viewer’s side.You can infer stuff about the storyline from that shot alone..(Perhaps the two earing white also has some signigificance,but I am not sure)

    French,
    if that was so (it could well be so i am willing to give the benefit of the doubt here), i am pretty sure i have seen the same ‘philosophical’ scene at least a 100 times on the tube and another 100 times in the past 2 years on the silver screen. :-)

    i sure hope ur optimism doesnt take a beating once u see this potential classic on cellulloid mate eheh
