The Angrez – a true hyderabad film……
Varun | Movies, Review | January 31, 2008 at 5:51 pm
The Angrez is one film which most of the hyderabadi’s will be able to connect. The last authentic hyderabadi urdu-hindi-english speaking movie was “Hyderabad blues” and most of you guys out there must have seen it, but there was more than whats shown and spoken about hyderabad. I was born and bought up in Hyderabad and cafés over there are some what special because they have been there for many years and they hold a special place in history of Hyderabad and they are inexpensive places to hang out (My fav’s are alpha hotel, blue sea, paradise, hotel sohail and café bahar) all you need to do is to order a chai and that’s it… the place is yours for couple of hours, that’s what the main characters in this film do. But one day suddenly they get into a fight with Angrez (Not exactly English guys but NRI’s whom these guys call angrez) and they want to take revenge and how they do is the whole story. Angrez was big hit in US thanks to you-tube. The Angrez is not a great piece of art but it’s an honest effort to portray life of Hyderabad people. Many of you might think why am I writing about this film the reason being is that The Angrez created this cult following among Hyderabadi people all over the world and its first full length feature film where main characters are from Hyderabad, the whole movie was shot in Hyderabad and main characters in the film speak Hyderabadi hindi. I bet all the people who have seen the you-tube clip’s may never forget who Salim Pheku, Ismail Bhai and Jhangir were and most people remember the dialogues in the first viewing itself….. I have watched the videos on you-tube zillion times and I still find them to be funny. The Angrez is full of old city flavour you get to travel the local gallis of madina, afzal gunj, charminar etc., and look at gosh ki dukans, bonalu, Irani hotels ( I have no idea why they call them Irani hotel).

And some of my favorite scenes are….
Ismail Bhai
” Tum logaan serious kaiku lete yaro. Ismalil bhai ke patthe hai. Pacchis saal se charminar pe baithewan hun, meri bhi kuchh ijjat hai yaron.Tum logaan kya to bhi samjhe re mereku? ”
Ismail Bhai
“Phukat ke chaya,Phukat ke biskita,Phukat ke samose khake, tum logaan bambu ghusadrahe mere mein.”
Ismail Bhai
Kya re Salim, kya khushboo aa ri rey?
Salim
Poison daal liya
Jahangir
Kya re poison daal liya?
Kiraath
Kya re, kya phek ra re?
Salim
Arey tum log cheap category ke local basti ke C-grade loga hai. Poison bole tho scent ko boltey. Bahar milta.
Jahangir
Abids ke footpath pe milta hoga.
Salim
woh duplicate tumary bava lagatey
Jahangir
Aee … bava pe nakko jao.
Ismail Bhai
Arey tum log ladlo nakko yaaro
Salim
Arey mein kya bol raha bhai …Poison boley toh scent ko boltey. Merey bedroom mein saath sau khisham ki sheshiyaan hai. Mein jab bhi davat mein jata hun na ek poori scent ki sheshe daal leke jata hun. Kapdon mein, idhar udhar, chaddi mein jooton mein sab jagah daal leke jata hun.
Kal raat ko kya hua malum, Krishna Oberoi mein daavat thi. Davat mein jatey hi poorey manegaraan vanegaraan hello hai boley. mein bola Party kahan chal ri boley toh Blanket hall min chal ri … blanket hall yaaron. Blanket hall mein ghustey hi poorey looga naachre. Mein bola ab mein naachney ko gaya toh poorey pottiyan mereko lapat jati. Toh mein aisa baazoo se nikalroo toh do logaa thehrey huey tehy kya boley malum .. Arey inhey English filmo ka hero deekh ra ne?
Ab mein hallu jakey table pe baith gaya. Baiththey hi waiter aya. Bola .. sir, anything thanda garam. Ab sharab toh mein peeta nahi.Mein bola ek all mix fruit juice la bola.
Aisa baithey se hi samney se Mallika deekh li
Ismail bhai
Mallika ??
Salim
Arey Murder Yaaron! Bhaaglke aakey boli … hi Salim, where are u, how do you do, now u do bolkey pakadli. Malika, poorey logan deekh re, yeh kya kar ri tum. Boley toh unhey kya boli malum? Arey .. aisey hi kaama karey toh apun papoolur hotey! Fir lapatney aati toh bola deekho control mein raho. Mereko fir lapti Ustaad. Lapatkey idhar pappi, udhar pappi .. meri toh foolna shuru ho gayi.
Jahangir
Kya Phulna shuru ho gayi baap?
Salim
Arey saans Phulna shuru ho gayi.
The Angrez was released in one theater (Ramakrishna 70mm) just like Hyderabad blues in Sangeet Theater (secunderabad) and people started flowing in after couple of weeks and producers recovered most of their money. I have couple of friends from work and they ask me hundreds of questions like do they really talk like this in Hyderabad?? And what is Hyderabad like?? It’s all because they liked The Angrez and they like to know more about Hyderabad and the people. The point I’m trying to make here is that a movie with an honest approach and not much of production value will create a following among audiences than any of the big budget films. Though the Movie didn’t attract mainstream film industry but it triggered off what now seems to be the trend of making comedies based on Hyderabad lifestyle. Most of the cast and crew have little experience of movie but they did one heck of a job in making us all laugh.

Good pick Varun. That movie was a total entertainer. Never mind the production values, acting, etc. I was thrilled at hearing Ismail Bhai say ‘— ki kirkiri’. So typical.
And what about the guy (servant) who goes ‘dollaraan dollaraan’
The same team made another movie ‘Hyderabad Nawabs’ but that wasn’t half as funny. The novelty had died.
Aha…atlast ” The Angrez”
Arrei woh lal waaali mecedez nakko rei baawaa..woh safed waali bhez bola nah..mein tereko…kaama hain mereko…bahut kaama hain…
Kya saleem bhai..dus rupaye ke numayez ke phone se baat kiye tho potti pathi?
Woh aapko maloom, mere ko maloom potti ko maloom?
Some of those amazing dialogs…what a way to transport yourself back to the “ethnic” hyderabad…you can smell biryani and faluda there…with 2 chai ek empty…
Jhangir falls down as saleem pheku breaks his “scooter”
Disc breakaan bolthe isko..
Kya baingan ke breakaan hain rei yeh..
Varun, as you have just come back from hyderabad..i am sure, you might have found out..hyderabad is not the same…blame it on the IT generation…I NEED THAT ETHNICITY IN HYDERABAD..I WANT MY HYDERABAD BACK……
@ Anand…. I Didn’t like any scene with those NRI’s … it was boring…..
Another scene that i like is when the gang goes to angrez’s office and they clean the toilet…
Salim
Arey ismail bhai zara woh kone mein saaf karo na
Ismail bhai
Saale 25 saal se charminar mein bhatehua hoon saale tu mere se paikhane saaf kara tha re….
@OM
Man I miss my hyderabad too….I dont want any of this IT i would done any thing to go back in trance… Makikirikiri
Phinally Angrez PFC mein aagaya.
For all of you out there who say PFC stands only for intellectual/quality/great standard kinds films, now take this!!!
The best part is there is a salim, a jehangir and a Ismail bhai in all of us hyderbadi’s who are born and inculcated to the lifestyle there. There is a kind of perennial lazyness and a laid back attitude that flourishes in all of us primarily due to the ease of life.
Sridhar for me tapped into this very spirit and Angrez is a testament to it!
Does this deserve a special place in the annuls of Cinema, YES! Not because of the production values, not because of acting but simply because of the number of times and the number of people in the world is repeat the dialogues presented above every day when they are hanging out with friends or chilling with a beer.
Is there heaviness in them, NO. Is there a lot of message in them, nah… is it poetically so justified, not at all but what they have is a universal appeal which makes it so humane.
So all the purists out there, is blue blood a pre-crusor to greatness… watch Angrez!
My best line:
“Arre kya ustad, Jehangir ki sari dukaan tod dale…”
@Ravi there is another one in Hyderabad Nawabs
” Jaando bolke chediye tho Phosan marre…”
@varun
completely agree that Ironically it was the ‘Angrez’ part of the movie which was tepid, but the rest of it was hilarious… whoever played Salim Pheku, Ismailbhai, Jehangir have done a marvelous job!
iam not from Hyderabad but still could feel with the place and the characters.
@Varun,
Are Bhai, itta samay laga diya angrezan ko expose cover karne mein:)
Part of film which is related with Ismail Bhai, Salim Phenku etc is hilarious. Far better and sophisticated than old popular comedies like Bakra Kishton par.
That was ultimate when Ismail Bhai asks Salim Phenku, I have got to know that you have been saiyng all over city that I have been beaten”
and when he asks in shocks,” Razia (hope name is right for his keep) ko bhi pata chal gaya kya”.
and he comes out after beating by his wife.
Software professional part was hartdly bearable becasue actors were very poor though writers created good scenes and kept nice observations about them. what happens, is there, though poor actors spoiled that. Their regular recitation “ohh shi* shi*” was ajhel and over.
Film is significant that a group actually made it, released it and quality wise also they made a entertaining comedy.
Hope sequels are coming in your next posts though THE ANGREZ is better than them.
Thank you for covering the film in so entertaining way. :d
Well, No one is talking about Kuntaa Nikkil, the director of this movie. He is a dear friend of mine and I know how hard he worked to get this movie made.
After coming back from the US, Nikkil tried so much to start his movie. This was from 2003 and finally after many years, he got his movie made and luckily, it hit it off with the audience
wow
Angrez here,…
(I love it)
neeche ‘Gandhi’ bhi hai
this is obviously one of the best pics to come out from telugu film industry in the last couple of years… this movie has made hyderabad famous outside the state more than our progress in IT… total bindaas movie…. still remember watching this movie in sangeet, 2nd show with friends…. 1000 times better than om shanti om
I loved the ANGREZ. Miss my hyderrabad so much! Anyway, has anyone watched Hyderabadi Nawabs? I think it was made before the Angrez. Same cast and crew. It is a lot more fun than the Angrez especially since it does not have the NRI scenes and its total hyderabadi……..
Salim Pheku, Ismailbhai, Jehangir awesome acting !!! Smooth !!!
NRIs and other characters – horrible acting
By the way the caf
machchar…invite him to write a post on the making of angrez. wud be great read.
varun…finally..u did it..
Not a great movie…. but brings back Hyderabad memories…
. I hate that the HYDERABADI culture is dying down… I hope more films are made in the typical Hyderabadi dialect….
Had read somewhere that Nikkill is making his second movie..probably a sequel to the angrez..
Lets hope that its good.. May be Macchar can clarify on that..
But on a whole Angrez was hilarious. Hyderabad Nawabs did not work for me. Felt the movie was pretty over the board..
And if I remember correctly Nikkil was one of the Angrezs(The shorter one)… All the best to him and as Pheonixnu had suggested, it would be great if he shares his experiences on PFC…
Finally last but not the least, nice post Varun… Will take u to a cafe for a round of chai the next time u r in Hyd…
hehe!
saleem, jehangir and ismail bhai.. no words to describe the combination..
initially i didn’t like the NRIs..
but then they are really funny when you watch the movie again and again..
god.. the way they over act..
“Its the old city guys.. sheet sheeet”
:d:d
ismail bhai and the auto scene..
jehangir and the “aaj ki taariq” scene..
saleem and the “malikka” scene..!
tood good!
@Jayzee……Its great that you know about the film even though you are not from hyderabad….Hope you visit some time…
@RK …Ismail bhai’s reaction when a waiter at a cafe asks him ” Kya Ismail bhai angrezaan aapko khundal khundal ke maare karthe” that was nice one too….
@Machhar it would be nice if you could ask him to write here no one knows nothing about him or how he got everybody to make Angrez..
@Vineeth agree completely Angrez was something that i discovered cinematically in 2006….and its was better than welcomes partners and loads of other shit that bollywood has….
@Phoenixnu…… thanks bhai….
@Sarang….didnt like hyderabad nawabs as much….
@Mindtentaive…will do for sure……paradise Biryani + chai…
some of my fave scenes:
the end scene:
ismail bhai’s wife: sahi se gino na… dekho tumhare wajay se dukaan ki haalath kya hogayi.
ismail(throws the logs of wood in frustration): thu! kutte ki zindagi tho behthar rehti!!
some unforgettable onliners:
salim: arey.. dabbon mein se kaha se nikle bhai logaan.
jahangir: aaj ki thareek dekho tum logaa..
rukhsana: parsu thumahre ku khundal khundal ke maare kehte na…
ismail: kaun bole thumare ku?
rukhsana: parsu salim bolra tha gosh ke dukaan pe.
Nice one bro
hey,
this was a really hilarious movie!! i remember once my friend and I went to an irani cafe just to see wat the big deal abt it was that all the guys in general were raving. we were very self conscious, 2 girls sitting by themselves in the cafe , the tea was horrible and we just ran out of there with everone staring at us but smug at having experienced having chai at irani cafe!!
