The Bachchan Series – Part 2

Hi Folks,
Continuing my series on AB which I wrote when he was coming into NY, last year. Here is the second part entitled - Bachchan – Festivities Continue – HUM
Hi Folks,
Continuing the celebration of AB,as his festival comes up in April in
NY, the last time we covered AGNEEPATH for which he won the National
Film award. This time the journey continues with another Mukul Anand
starrer, HUM….hmm…HUM…a classic? Not really, remember this is a
celebration of the works of AB and his various phases. HUM in that is
an important one. HE AGES in HUM!!!!!!. For the first time, he is the
central character for only 1/2 the film (well not for the first time,
but since his emergence to superstardom). For the other 1/2, he gives
space to the then new kids on the block, Govinda and Rajnikant. He
also plays a mellow down character, almost normal, unlike the larger
than life first half, wherein he panics at the site of violence,
keeps away from confrontation because he has a family to raise and
the resultant responsibilities and expects the same from his family,
which becomes the focal point of his existence (in the second half
that is). Then an inciting incident and TIGER (his nickname in the
movie), reemerges, to take on his nemises, Danny (again). This film
has those two shades of realism, actually three…a) AB shying away
from fights b) Danny, the villian behaving unlike any villians, that
is none of the shouting, being called wierd names (Ranga, Loin, etc)
and acutally shedding a tear when his own child and wife perish early
on in the movie and c) the emergence of the politically seasoned
second villian in the form of Anupam Kher (Girdhari and Garment as he
grows in stature). Mukul came from the corporate world to the film
world and let’s face it, as we go about our corproate and daily
lives, there are three sets of people, as Anupam clearly says in the
film “One who does injustuce (Danny), one who rises against injustice
(AB) and one who takes advantage of the situation (Kher).
Remember the divide and rule strategy, holds good in todays world too
and that caused the universal appeal in this entertaining film.
See it for the effects and the larger than life dramatic style of
movie making which only Mukul and Bachchan could create on the
screen. Also see it for one thing Bacchan was nerver given credit for
thorughout his career…….his ability to dance…..all along they
said he cannot dance…..well watch as Tiger asks his beloved (Kimi)
for a Chumma on Jhummma and then you’ll decide whether a person
closing in on age 50 can dance or what..
The film also has fine performances by Kimi, Govinda, Shilpa,
Rajnikant, Deepa Sahi and of course Danny and Anupam.
Sincerely,
Vivek “legendary stuff is made up of a series of daily routine

Captain Attack maane ke Zataak
the awesome background music which goes liek this(think about it..lol) Teerinding teeriding..(everytime before a fight)
The Batman Dance by Govinda..fuck Legendary…
OM, it’s “flit”.. flit was a pichkaari-type instrument which was sprayed at bugs to kill them.. not sure if they sell that anymore..
but yes, that dialogue is not only legendary, but also my earliest memory of AB.. “hum” was the first movie of his which i saw in a theater. a classic in its own right.
Thanks Striker..I remember the Pichkaari..yeah..after all it was my job to spray that “Bagon Spray” every summer night..at home..uffff yeh Macchar…Lol!!!
AB worked at Harbour in Deewar for 5-10 minutes and film was super hit and Hum was based on people working on harbour and again film was super hit. Hindi cine lovers had not seen use of harbour before in this fashion as Mukul Anand showed. He made word Godi quite familiar with this film and song “Jumma Chumma” was another factor to make film hit. This was the biggest AB’s hit song after Khai ke pan banaras wala in Don. New kind of choreography(at that time) by Chinni Prakash. Danny is then Danny. Though at the time of release most of the people did not like comical jugalbandi of Anupam Kher and Annu Kapur in this crime drama. And yes AB’s close friend and producer of the film Romesh Sharma also played the role of honest friend of AB, to him AB says those famous dialogues after drinking that “Dunia mein do type ke cockroches hote hain”.
