Title: THE CUTEST FILM OF THE YEAR!! - Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na…
Who goes in to see a movie 9.30 am in the morning? Quite a few apparently.
I, amongst them, treaded into the line outside the ticket counter….god what are so many people doing here this early! I thought am going to be the only hapless person to come over to a theater this early…..they must be for LOVE STORY 2050, stupid people!! Why would anyone pay money to see a hrithik clone dance with robots! But then again, am sure the hall for jaane tu ya jaane na is going to be half empty…..I need to stretch my legs! So I reach the counter, “one ticket for jaane tu, current show please”, and then comes the shock, “sir is 3rd row from the front all right” .
WTF??
3rd row!!!!
The whole hall is sold out and I was the one to get the last ticket!!! Recovering from the jhatka I took the ticket and walked into the fourth hall…..it was already packed and I couldn’t find one person
above 25!!! can’t remember exactly when the last time the ratio was this was high on youth. The hall was already dark and the ad’s just ended……there was a slow cheer as the first trailer flashed up…..vikram bhatt’s 1920, no surely not another one? Which one is this ripped from?? Looked like “THE OTHERS” to me….the next trailer, “ROCK ON” was reasonably better, and even got a cheer….looked good, but aint the director the same person who directed ARYAN?
My spirits sank!! But alas here starts the film, the first few minutes was a real let down for me, but the good thing about the film is that it sort of grows on you, even though I could predict every scene, I was still surprised.
And as one sort of gets used to these characters, the highly accented Guajarati JIGNESH, the cute and sweet bombs, rotlu the over pessimistic but very lovable guy, and off course our main characters
RATS, the ever charming non violent son of a violent rajput, and last but not least MEOW, the absolute life line of this movie. It’s as the screen fills up with these sweet lovable people that you sort of get sucked into this whole film and find yourself sort of playing along with their story ignoring all the cliché’s. It is here where the film succeeds big time for me. It gets the audience involved. It makes you care, and want to know what happens in the end. Though even the youngest member in the theatre could have predicted the ending.
I can’t remember the last time I heard a multiplex audience at inox forum clap and cheer for a movie. The casting is perfect; everyone from the guy who played jignesh to ratna pathak is perfectly cast.
Imran khan, the debutant does fairly well, though I sort of found him a little plastic at times, but as the girl sitting behind me shouted during one of the scenes, JUST LOOK AT HIS FACE AND SHUTUP!! IMRAN is by far the cutest actor to have debuted on the Indian screen in a long long time. But the highlight is undoubtedly GENELIA, I can’t quite remember seeing a girl with this much energy and vibe. Whenever the film starts to drag, it’s her character that infuses new energy into it to take itself that last one mile.
Of the cameos, Naseeruddin Shah is excellent, and this is probably the first time I liked the khan brothers in a film, I so hope they go ahead and make a full film on those desi cowboys. But the award for the cameo of the year goes to Paresh Rawal. In the two scenes’ he’s got he absolutely steals the show. Technically the film looked brilliant, polished but not in a showoffy way. This is a sort of film that I term as popcorn entertainment, its enjoyed best with hot caramel popcorn and a cool
drink on a Sunday afternoon with friends. The film received a lot of criticism from a few people (certain PFCians, ahem ahem you know who am talking about) but the people for whom the film was made would love it. It’s for people who still like to go to movies not cinema. Go in with a fresh mind, prepared for a cliché filled ride and be prepared to play along. Jaane tu is a film which is marked by two words CUTE and LOVEABLE, if these two words satisfy you this is going to be a memorable experience for you.
P.S- abbas tyrewala, my idol, I do wish you came up with a script with
a bit more wit, but whatever the script lacked you have compensated it
with charm and simplicity.

i think this is the first film where nasser and paresh ahve both been used to their potenial
genelia needs to work on her accent
the maka-pav-ness of st andrews college is still with her
Pratiek babbar was exceptionally natural! (now isn’t that an oxymoron??) nd I felt sad for manjari phadnis’ character.. (sniff sniff)..’what’s this meghna? it’s a dumb big dull guy stunned at how u saw ur dreams in every shitty thing going around u…

Rusted Rick, you were lucky man(?) I saw the movie from the first row !!
I agree with whatever you wrote, except one thing : “Though even the youngest member in the theatre could have predicted the ending”.
I know atleast 4 people in my life who did not get their RATs or MEOWs, respectively. The actual story for the people who I know, goes somewhat like what Abbas has narrated ( only the gender changes ) - but Rat does not meet Meo or vice versa.
@vivek
‘the maka-pav-ness of st andrews college is still with her’
exactly wat i want to say…her hindi accent was definitely catholic…
oh!!INOX people cheering!!!dat’s is some kind of achievment,i guess…very true bout the ave age of the audience…
I think its the best movie of the year so far
am i the only one to find conformist subtexts in the movie?
I hvn’t seen the movie yet,looking forward to watch it.
A classic example of how good writing can elevate an ordinary story to new levels. The depth Abbas has given to each character is amazing.
@PAPAI
conformist subtexts bole toh? in this film??? exactly how?
no papai. but it hardly was subtext. it was all in ur face conformism
@Dpac
Actually in your face conformism was drowned by the naacha gaana in the theater i saw the movie
Agree 100% to whatever has been said positive about this masterpiece. I am yet to find anything negative about this movie. Do we think the filmakers who can make such a lovely movie are dumb to ignore the negatives?
