(3/5) Nice, funny and quirky but so ‘exotic’ and self-consciously detached and elegiac that it becomes annoyingly precious; even vacuous. Awesome soundtrack, though!

“self-consciously detached and elegiac that it becomes annoyingly precious”
I just got curious about the use of adj here. Being self-con’ly detached and mournful(funereal) lead to the film becoming likable / precious; but against your very well ie annoyingly. Seems so weird.
Could you explain that plz?
Damn..Typos: well is will

@Arthi: ‘Precious’ here doesn’t mean ‘valuable’ or ‘likeable’. The word has a different connotation too, and that is the one in use here.
Refer to (4) here:
precious(adjective)–
1.of high price or great value; very valuable or costly: precious metals.
2.highly esteemed for some spiritual, nonmaterial, or moral quality: precious memories.
3.dear; beloved: a precious child.
4.affectedly or excessively delicate, refined, or nice: precious manners.
5.flagrant; gross: a precious fool.
“exotic, annoyingly precious and vacuous”
words that aptly describe any Hollywood backyard production trying to portray India ….personally i thought “Darjeeling limited” avoided those brilliantly but never forcibly.
exoticism etc was used as a cinematic device here, without it the film would have indeed felt vacuous.
Exoticism, yeah- that is there with most hollywood films- in fact i’m planning a post on something related to that soon. But Anderson’s somewhat affected style got on my nerves at times… i don’t quite know how to put it right now. I haven’t seen his other films yet- I plan to see them soon- but his uniquestyle does become quite apparent here.
