There’s something about this genre – It has given us the biggest blockbusters, greatest megastars, timeless classics, unforgettable characters, priceless moments – But at the same time it has this eccentric irreverence attached to it. Step-motherly, almost.
If the utterly cheesy article-opening and the timing of the post doesn’t make it too obvious – In the season of mush, with the incentive to cuddle and coddle – I unapologetically dedicate this space to Romantic movies.

Unapologetically? Why should one be apologetic about a genre of film-making?
Well, maybe its just me, Or the cynics all around, Or the thinkers I’ve been influenced by since I’ve managed to convince myself I ‘understand’ the medium a bit – The fact is it’s most self-proclaimed torchbearers of intellectual nature don’t take as much pride in discussing romantic movies as the other ‘cinematically scoped’ genres. That’s fine too, but the problem begins when we start feeling that this genre is only meant for “Mills and Boonish teenage chicks”!
I remember the year Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction released on VHS’s in India, Aditya Chopra made his debut with Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge – I had much older cousins (”whadyya-know-bout-cinema?” types) who would watch the former every single day and analyze it with same excitement 2 scientists discuss Nuclear Physics – While I, still wearing half-pants to school, was aptly obsessed with the later. So, while John Travolta and Samuel Jackson’s french linguistics for Quarter-pounder with cheese and Big Mac tickled them – My heart went out for Raj, getting slapped (6 times!) by Simran’s bauji and still having the courteousness to let him keep his daughter. This ‘Pulp Fiction Vs DDLJ, 1996′ lasted quite a while, where I was repeatedly complimented being too “naive to understand world cinema” and ridiculed, And I could just never get the point. Cut to present, few weeks back, It hit me when I ashamedly realized having paid the same compliment to a teenage neighbour who preferred Ghajini over Slumdog cause she thought the romance in it was “cho-chweet”! So, what’s the point? The Point is, One likes what one likes, but does anybody in the world have the right to look down upon someone on the basis of the movies or genre they are fond of? We’ll unanimously say No, but don’t most of us do that? Or probably the problem lies with the genre? Or perhaps I’ve digressed too much!….Another day, Another article…

Getting back to the genre….I’m a no sucker for romantic movies or genre-specific but all for a well-made entertainer – So here I’m gonna list 5 of my all-time favourite Hollywood romantic flicks, and one highpoint from each – My verbo‘de without much movie detailing cause I’m assuming you all must have seen these popular flicks already. Also, they’re not easy to categorize as every other movie has a strong romantic track thus I request you to leave it to author’s prerogative. The movies are listed sheerly on their heart-warming quotient, Cynics and critics may scoff, But that’s the only way to rate flicks of this genre :-

1) Casablanca :- I could include it with utmost ease at the top of the list for a simple fact that there’s absolutely no reason why it shouldn’t be here, We’re talking about Casablanca – The Godfather of this genre. And this, when the movie started off as an unproduced stage play which was still awaiting it’s first call, Casting a then B-Grade support artist (Humphrey Bogart) with a borrowed leading lady (Ingrid Bergman) who were the 3rd choice for their respective roles – And both HATED the movie while making it cause Michael Curtiz, in his own notorious style, would write and alter the script on the set, on daily basis! – Amazingly ended up creating masterpiece that epitomizes the word ‘Timeless’ and challenges generations that followed to achieve its wholesomeness. Sometimes it all just comes together – the story, the cast, the dialogue, the direction – and you get a movie that stands the test of time, And above all, its cultural footprints on world of cinema, all infused by unforgettable passion and the now legendary craft. It’s been revered. It’s been worshipped. It’s been iconised. It’s been celebrated. There is absolutely nothing that could be said about Casablanca that hasn’t been said a million times before, thus I’ll cut it short, Everytime I watch the movie its like celebrating themes of love, sacrifice and honour in a more enduring and universal form than ever. Watch it again and get floored for reasons that could only be discovered not told….And, of course…

“We’ll always have Paris”

2) Roman Holiday :- I’m gonna sound biased here cause I am biased – Its all about loving Audrey Hepburn you see! Casted opposite Gregory Peck was this stunner from Belgium making her Hollywood debut, bagging the Oscar for best-actress and winning million hearts – Though I personally feel she’s at her best in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’ – Hepburn was arguably the finest actress of the Golden age, And unarguably no camera before or since ever loved one woman so faithfully and unconditionally!.…Okie, over Audrey Hepburn, The movie is Roman Holiday, I don’t think there’s any language or any cinema in which Roman Holiday hasn’t been metaphorically remade, Or at least hugely ‘inspired’ by. If you haven’t seen it already – You’d be amazed at how familiar scenes of the movie look, as they’ve become such an integral part of cinema legend – And yet, it would still seem fresh with no trace of old-movie cheesiness. I read William Wyler speak on how he created “Characters with just enough depth to hold them together but not so much that they become too individualized, or too stubbornly complex”, Roman Holiday is a prime example. It is a classic, plain and simple, and it more than lives up to it’s reputation in every possible way – It remains narratively surprising and emotionally engaging, Also the transfer is exquisite, every shadow, every detail is as it should be. It is funny, charming, sweet and delightful – Although the romance bit is brief, and not even comprehensive towards the bittersweet climax, Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck shine to make sure it remains memorable and brings romantic-enigma out of you. Watch it for the sheer joy of the “I’m in love” feeling, and If you are not – Watch it and see if you don’t fall in love with Audrey Hepburn !

“I love you as deeply as many years could make me, but less deeply than many years will make me”

3) Say Anything :- This one’s the most raw and humble of all the movies listed here, there are rough edges, candyfloss high-school romance, off-the-strip characters, technically not a masterpiece, but still exudes the most warmth (maybe it’s all relative!) – Say Anything – I loved the movie when I first saw it a decade and half back, really, truly, madly, passionately, deliciously, capital L type Love. Now I do see the blaring flaws but this film has been so special during the growing up years it’s impossible to dump it now! Say Anything is quintessentially a feel-good movie and that’s exactly what it does – it makes me feel good! Cameron Crowe (the maker of JerryMaguire) stands out for creating 2 of the most lovable teenage movie characters – Lloyd Dobler and Diane Court – in a relationship that became standard pop culture reference for romance, for a simple reason that it made us live all the stupid things we so passionately did when in high-school, letting mushy feelings override common-sense and instantaneously wins our empathy. Of course, there are the questions about principles, moral choices and the whole uncertainties of real life dilemma at the end as well, But thankfully it doesn’t preach at all. Say Anything rides on those affable moments between the boy and the girl, the magic they weave while together, like one particular priceless sequence which immortalized Peter Gabriel, and inspired a whole generation to stand under the girl’s house with a stereo and remind her…

“love I get so lost, sometimes days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
when I want to run away I drive off in my car
but whichever way I go I come back to the place you are
all my instincts, they return and the grand facade, so soon will burn
without a noise, without my pride, I reach out from the inside
in your eyes…”

4) When Harry Met Sally :- This one’s more than a romantic movie – It talks men, women, their psyche and relationships – in possibly the most gripping and entertaining way ever. No wonder I have seen When Harry Met Sally twice as many times as the next most watched romantic flick and I’m good for many more. Its utterly irresistible not only for the repeat value, but interluded, allegorized complexities – which, obviously, one could decipher at point transition levels – As a kid I loved it for its humour, the inimitable Bill Crystal, the cutest actress of our generation, the adorable Meg Ryan, and their conversations, the delightful, flashing wit. Then I used to watch it for my fav scenes, 7 of them! Later came the phase I began to discover the intrinsic sense behind those conversations (which, as Rebecca West puts, are nothing but ‘Intersecting monologues’!) – What they speak, how they think, and realization that When Harry Met Sally is one of those rare films where every shot and every quotable line of dialogue counts, there’s not a dead patch, not a frame which doesn’t speak or derives out of bottom phased relationship-based issues – Which the movie chronicles through their eleven-year relationship. Staying typical to the genre, the movie reaches its crescendo with dialogues that could melt most people in their seats, some rip-roaringly hilarious, some astonishingly profound, some tragically factual. The film is deep, but at the same time, we feel that real life is unfolding in front of us, rather than the fact that we are watching a fun entertaining movie – It is movies like these that make the whole experience worth a million bucks. Watch it once, and then watch it again, and then it ceases being a movie and then you lose the count…!!

“I love that you get cold when it’s 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle in your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts. I love that after I spend day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible”

5) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind :- A difficult pick, the most discussed about in recent times and I remember defending Michel Gondry’s movie like a baby all the while it was criticized by detractor (for their own logically respectable reasons, I accept) – But I love Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind for more reasons than that. Named after a phrase coined by Alexander Pope, and written by Kaufman (the same guy who wrote Adaptation, Please watch it if you haven’t yet) – Its not glamorously appealing, It carries an inherent sad poignancy, It takes longer to acknowledge the audience (intentionally so, I felt) – But still it works, and how! The movie makes no bones about the fact that our lives not being what they appear, relationships are not as we’ve let ourselves to assume and, staying at them, nothing absolutely perfect is meant to last – It all works around an counter-intuitive but strong romantic base. Yes, it is primarily a romantic movie, as much about 2 strangers and their relative emotions, as about the mystifying beauty and existential horror of being trapped inside one’s own chaotic psyche, and in depicting the self-preserving amnesia of a broken but hopeful heart. Further aided by the brilliant dialogues and a stellar cast (and support cast too, I must add) makes this weirdly funny, thought provoking and yet touching film triumphantly standout from the rest in recent past. Its not without flaws, No movie is, But by the time you’re done with it and come to terms with the twisted, dotted roundedness (I got the ‘full-circle’ thing 2nd time, let me confess!), the repressed melancholia and draw the meanings – It goes on to become one of those rare magical movies where the whole of it clearly exceeds the sum of the parts. One might not entirely agree with the surreal love, pain and tenacity of memory concept it’s built on, but that’s subjective. I believe Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the finest 21st century ‘Romantic’ movie, And that’s just as subjective too!

“I wish you’d stayed. I wish I’d stayed, too. Now I wish I’d stayed. I wish I’d done a lot of things. I wish I’d…I wish I’d stayed. I do”

Honorable Mention :-

Gone with the Wind (It’s worshipped by its fans, “But frankly my dear” it pales in comparison with Mitchell’s original work….Independently taken, its right up there with Casablanca)
An affair to remember (Tragically, I saw it after its calamitous remakes, Still its a film impossible not to fall in love with!)
Pride and Prejudice (Some great moments, Still falls short of doing justice to Austen’s classic but well worth the watch if you’ve never read the book)
The Bridges of Madison County (Watch it to see how well it handles mature romance, and those 2 awfully talented people called Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep!)
Before Sunrise (Ahh! Ever loved a movie only for its dialogues and an evening?!)
You’ve got Mail (People who’ve been in cyber-relationships swear by it, To me its all about that wonderful lead pair, Shopgirl, NY152, their moments together, the words apart and that amazingly heartwarming climax – “If I wasn’t Joe Fox and you weren’t Kathleen Kelly…”!!)
Sleepless in Seattle (Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan again, with big help from the small kid – a moving romantic treat!)
Forrest Gump (”I’m not a smart man, but I know what love is” – Incredible movie, Just that it doesn’t truly satisfy the criterion of the genre for me)
Notting Hill (I love it cause it gave us that funny, far-fetched, fan-tasizing hope!)

I’m sure I have missed quite a few, either just skipped my memory Or I might not have seen them. So, If there are any of your absolute favourites which didn’t find mention here – Please go ahead and let me know. You could just mail me the list, or recommendation, I have to watch them all!

P.S :- And if I’m required to make an end-comment of “Pulp Fiction Vs DDLJ, 2009″ – Is Adi’s timeless charmer better cinema than Tarantino’s cult classic? No….But hell! The Gold Watch never ran consecutively for 690 weeks, did it…?!

  1. The only reason why i hate romantic movies on screen, is their total M&B treatment. Its like you can fall in love either if u look like a Greek God or must be really rich. You want to see a real touching love story, check out Il Postino( The Postman). That is what love is about, a bumbling, confused ordinary looking postman who strikes up a friendship with Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, so that he could learn poetry and woo his beloved. One of the finest treatments of love and friendship ever.

For me the most romantic scene ever, wud be the ending of Cinema Paradiso, where the protagonist, takes a look at a montage of various on screen kisses, that had been cut out by the theater’s owner.

Of the list u had given, wud agree with more. Love Roman Holiday, for its ending. Before Sunrise is always one of my favorites.

Bridges of Madison County was a real mature exploration of adultery. Also liked The End of The Affair, great performances from Ralph Fiennes and Julianne Moore.

It is a good post and very needed one on this forum which completely ignores romance as a genre except few articles in last month. The choice of the film is good and worth but few films like ‘Annie Hall’ and ‘The Apartment’ are missing from the list. For the DDLJ is more sucess because it attaches to our emotion than brains despite of countless flaws.Otherwise Pulp Fiction is great movie for cinephiles.

Roman Holiday is a movie that made half of the world fall in love with Audrey hepburn and the other half to buy vespa scooter :) . the above phrase from one of the comments in imdb best explains the movies effect. Audrey is such a charmer. She was a rare actress who made several ordinary movies work very well just with undeniable charm of hers. ‘Notting hill’ is a personal favourite, julia roberts is awesome when she says.. ‘i am only a girl..standing in front of boy..asking him to love her….’. Best scene in the movie.

By far the biggest omition in the list is Chaplins ‘City lights’. Terrific movie. Woodys ‘Annie hall’ & ‘Manhattan’ are sure to be in list. Love actually, my best friends wedding could have been given honorable mentions.

I liked the way you’ve put those snippets of dialogue at the end of each film from each film ofcourse…
I really like to read such dialogues…makes me linger on the words and the thoughts. WHMS scores big time on this front.
Before Sunrise and Before Sunset are good but somehow it called seemed quite a facade..the dialogues do click but at one level its all psycho-babble (i came across this somewhere and found it so damn apt for the film). When 2 people talk such intangible stuff it more often than not does lead to them getting together then. Maybe not forever..Hence thats not my fav.

I liked the film ‘Once’ too. Great great songs and super lyrics. How 2 music lovers can connect, beautifully depicted..
Then there is Il Postino already mentioned by Ratnakar..
Then, In Search of a Midnight Kiss – I found this so much better than Before Sunrise….

IMO “Manhattan” is as good as “Annie hall” make sure you watch it. Even i thought “breakfast at tiffany” slightly overrated but for the brillaint Audrey hepburn. Pricelss is a pretty neat movie . Audrey tautou gives a superb performance, catched it on utv movies.

@ KPV Balaji :- Will sure do, Woody Allen recommendations are always welcome…

@ Rakesh :- Somehow never liked the first two – neither movie nor literature….Grease was interesting…

@ RoodRow :- True – Sometimes even an average film works big-time!….And surprisingly nobody else spoke about ‘Talk to Her’ – I thought it was an outstanding movie…

Well Nimish, if you’ve written this article with the intention of paying the season of mush a fitting sugar-coated tribute then maybe the film I’m going to mention here would not fit the list…but if one wants to look at love from a broader perspective with a valid social scenario in the background, I, for one, would definitely recomment A Patch of Blue (ok, so I’m partial to Sidney Poitier)…but trust me, if you’re on my wavelength (we can debate on that some other time!!!!), you’ll never look at the equation between man and woman from the same perspective again…Hope its on your ‘must-watch’ list this weekend…

Very well written buddy, i enjoyed reading this more then i enjoyed watching any of the above mentioned films( except Roman holiday). i just cant understand why there is so much fuss about this genre. what i loved about ur writing is the intensity and honesty toward the genre which very clearly comes across , it almost forced me to reconsider my thoughts about genre-R. what i very strongly believe is that if u write something about genre-T(the most underrated genre according to me) with the same intensity it will be a treat for thriller lovers. think over it, i’m sure very soon you will come up with something which will cater my sensibility.
