After watching this, all I can say is that you guys suck for not giving it a proper North American release. Atleast key cities mein dikha dete. :(

Not giving a proper release in the US is seriously frustrating. All we get to do is read reviews after reviews raving about the film. Also, you guys have a done a pretty good job at preventing piracy since haven’t seen a single torrent file/rapidshare link to the movie yet. (Yeah, searched for it…yahaan baithkar gaand jalate hai aur google karte hai…) Good for you guys…but it really sucks for us, coz we don’t get to see the movie until it releases on DVD…that too IF it is available for sale in the US.

  8. Ashish- good work but I have one thing to say about the DVD release. If the attempt is to have just a handful of Dev D enthusiasts to spend more & buy the special DVD then price it exhorbitantly like what Aamit did with TZP ( some Rs.500 odd). But if the attempt is to reach out to a vast audience who would love to lap it up then it has to be priced attractively.I am not expecting a price point of Rs.50/45 like a lot of Moser Baer & T.Series titles due to the bonus DVD & all.But atleast let the price be a shade higher- not completely putting off a lot of interested buyers. If anyone concerned takes note of this point, I’ll be really glad.

    @Saurabh
I wonder if the unavailibility of torrents for Dev D points to a source for the pirated copies. The fact that Dev D was released in only 4 theaters in the US and none in the UK – doesn’t that mean the pirated copy ’seed’ is sown overseas, and most possibly not in India.

  18. vicksteria vicksteria says:

    @Pratik

Its possible. But then, the pirated copies of the other two movies that released along with Dev D have been out since day 1. And those movie’s didn’t get an international release as well.

So either the folks over at UTV have done a really good job at curbing the piracy for Dev D or the pirates are just big AK fans themselves and want his movie to do well. :D

    @Pratik and Vicksteria

I would agree with Vicksteria that since pirated copies of the other two releases are already available (everywhere!), am pretty sure that UTV has been able to keep a proper watch over each of its distributed prints.

Some suggestions for Mr.AK/UTV/MakersofDevD (all impractical, just venting my frustration)

    1. Any chances of special screenings in the USA? As can be seen from comments section, there is a huge demand/market…think about it!

    2. Can you pre-release the DVD sometime this week only in the US?

    3. Can we get Mr.Kashyap’s personal e-mail id, so that all enthusiasts may file an online petition?

    4. If nothing works, can anyone get a DVDrip copy and post it somewhere online…(anywhere is fine, google will find it)?

Seen the making twice…now someone get me the actual movie!

I cant come to India to watch it, I cant get the DVD yet, I cant even find a torrent (I knw I knw) and all the local Indian stores feign ignorance “Dev D? Yeh kab nikli? Nahi hai… sorry”

It is frustrating when u can not watch the one movie you have been waiting forever for. Makes me want to assume that Gulaal has no chance of coming to the cinemas here then!

Anurag mate, I’m from the UK. I fucking love your movies man. It’s like, you’re the prototype for a possible future for Indian cinema. Too much formulaic, lazy, embarassing clueless, witless pap comes out of commercial Indian cinema, I’d given up on it years ago, that was for my ancestors man.

Then I watched Black Friday and No Smoking and got my head fucked.

I mean, all the way through No Smoking I was grinning, how the hell did this guy get away with making this demented, brilliant, mad, freaky, deranged, hallucinatory shit in that industry of conservative, unimaginative shoe-polishers? Fuck me too if Black Friday didn’t put voltage down my spine as well man. Serious voltage. These philistines in India giving you censorship shit, that movie should have been put on a fucking Rolls Royce and paraded around film festivals and the Oscar Foreign Language submission, that is some serious mad engagement with the world in a virtuoso cinematic style man.

And I’m like a dog on heat to see Dev D now. I mean you have those listless Punjabis down perfect just from looking at the ‘making of’ clips you posted here man. Just watching the trailer fucked with my head a little. I mean, that’s it, right there, that’s Dev, the self-pitying bastard, the drugs, the recklessness, it’s all there, that is what it is. And seeing those out take clips on youtube, paying at the brothel with the credit card, all that detail.

And listening to the music is energising too. It’s like that last movie that Abhay Deol was in Oye Lucky, you know at last, a director who understands the pure fucking cinema in the minutiae and simple texture of Indian life and the urban Indian landscape, that you can do some mad crazy original and dark and deep stuff when you just root it in that. It’s like every time I go to India with my elders I’m amazed at how fucking cinematic the place is, everything, every street and pathway and angle, everything, and I watch these movies and they think India is fucking Zurich or some shit where everyone touches the idiot patriarch of the family’s feet and then they lick the marble stair case just after they do their stupid dance scenes. I mean how the fuck could all these film makers be blind to texture of lived life the way it is? You’ve got it going on man, you are a reckless fucker with a talent, don’t ever give up man, keep making the movies you want and blaze that trail for others, get your creations onto festivals and take it abroad, if you survive and thrive, Indian cinema in the next decade is actually going to be worth something, take all the other young mad men of Indian movies along with you, light those molotov cocktails and let rip, because I’m going to be enjoying the ride when you do that mate.

Bhenchod.. a flop in US.. ghantaa release hoga.. actually UTV freaked out because of a gem like OYE LUCKY!! having an unsuccessful run in US. I was one of the few privileged ones who proudly watched it in theatres.. whatever little it made in US, had some contribution from me also .. :D

Anyways, NRIs here do not see beyond SRKs and AKs.. So no wonder UTV is being careful with the release of DEV D, it being a very offbeat film.. Anyways, please make it a point to release it on DVD atleast in US. And also, all the best for the future success of this movie.. All the Adarshs and Nahatas are hell bent on terming it as a flop. Madarchodon ko muh ki khaani pad rahi hain.. isiliye bhosadi waale keh rahe hain ki sirf cities mein accept ho rahi hain.. woh bhi sirf mumbai aur delhi. Big time cocksuckers.

And I believe that the media is hell bent on terming DEV D as a flop.. Check out Taran Adarsh half heartedly accepting DEV D as a hit..

hmmm, where should i start, i remember PFC during the time when NO SMOKING had come out, and i personally loved the film for the deep thought that went into it at every level, even though i might had missed a few subliminal msg. during it’s first viewing … but i caught on and i said this is some film to come out of our country.
but then critics were bashing it,Anurags own yes men could not understand why he would make a film like that, and the general reaction was “is this the same man who gave us black friday”, and i was sitting on my couch reading these comments and saying , what the fuck.
Anyways i went to see DEVD the other day and the film opens with these kids on top of a canal or something and they are acting soo soo badly, it’s like they have learnt there lines soo bloody well that they reaction times are fast rather than impulsive or highly rehearsed for that matter and this is supposed to set the emotional graph for the film.
i personally feel that a film should carry the audience with you and not present snipets of intresting scenes lifted from this foreign film or that foreign film, i am full on for the idea of stealing from films but one should steal and then learn to conceal, what this film lack is an understanding of love, loss even the self destruction was more like self indulgence on DEV’S part, i felt the boy was just drinking like any other JATT in Punjab, and i didnt feel for his pathetic state, also MAHI coming back to wash clothes was ill timed , there were a lot of scenes that didnt seem to take the narrative forward .
also i am wondering how i would feel to see the film without having the baggage of devdas…..
hope i can express my disappointment in such a forum…..i loved BLACKFRIDAY, NOSMOKING AND WAITING FOR GULAAL….but i think this was a great mistake…i hope anurag is not going the RGV way.

    Anurag,
How much did it cost to make Dev D?
Any chance this will get a US release.

    Waiting for the DVD.

    Ashish,
Thanks man. This is such a learning experience. I was quite disappointed by Omakara’s companion DVD. It was just actors giving their interpretation.

I would have loved to have seen bad takes, how the director helps the actor get it right, describe how some scenes were lit, how the drafts changed.

Essentially, a sense of what it is like to be on the set, how the film was really shot/made?

Less of mutual admiration and more of technical/artistic decision making process and execution. This what your teaser made me yearn for.

    thx,
    -n

The DVD making will fulfill all your needs…as I said its gonna be as as good as being on the sets of Dev.D…but its more than that….to name a few…It also has the preproduction part which includes Script reading sessions, Narration, Auditions, Look tests, Location Recce, Set buildup, Deciding color swatch and texture of the film with respect to various location…then the whole set experience, the thought behind every detail, the goofups, the fun everything…It may also include making of some deleted scenes…

    So Book your copy soon!

  68. Anurag, I too think the opening scene with the kids was a downer. Looked really forced and I had too high hopes with the opening act. Anyways, what followed was a 2.5 hour cinematic orgasm. Brilliant, loved all the subtle metaphors. Many have been told already but some scenes that didnt havent been talked much… Chanda and Dev swimming in the night, as though they were getting atoned and washing off their sins together, face painting and many avtars of chanda: insecure with internal rage, the foot twitch as sexual tension, making out in a poultry farm as sign of sexual tension coupled with societal nonacceptance of the relation, a hundred rupee joint as arrogance, the coin decides dev’s fate even before it is flicked, chunni wearing shades so the viewer is ambiguous of his intentions, dont know if he is the good guy or bad, his last act shows his shades removed, the twilight brothers as the moral watchdog or mute spectators/proof of Dev’s unbecoming… I could go on and on.. BTW, why is the movie called Dev.D which sounds like a program or virus or..?

Anurag – considerng that good movies (read “non-commercial films that do not have the Khan’s or Bachchan’s or Roshan’s in them”) don’t have much commercial viabiity in the USA, would it ever be a possibility that DVD’s of these films could be released in these markets to coincide with their thaetrical release in India?
Surely UTV could make more money this way than waiting it out for months and missing out on potential revenue thanks to the rampant piracy market! I mean if I can buy or rent an original DVD and watch it on a big screen flat panel TV in its full glory then why would I bother downloading a version that looks and sounds like it was shot out of someones ass??!!

In my simple mind that is a solution to curb piracy and revenue loss for the studios :)

IMO BlackFriday was a well made documentary. Those who are in US or UK can very well vouch for the quality people bring in making their features. To differentiate Borat is a film which is made to look like a documentary and there lies the beauty.
Didnt watch NS due to the theme and various reviews about it being abstract. DevD – liked the “hatke” songs but plan to skip watching the film as I cant stand too much of expletives, double meaning dialogs, alcoholism etc
Looking fwd to the interesting films in pipeline from one of the exciting filmmakers that we have now.

    Hey,
Just wanted to say, Anurag your an amazing director that “Bollywood” needs. Your movies aren’t typical and desified which I love. We get something new to obeserve and actually appreciate from Bollywood. I hope you get commercial success because you deserve it with movies like Black Friday, No Smoking, and now Dev.d which I haven’t watched but I’am waiting for the dvd. Gulal should be an intense thiriller too, so congradualtions on your recent projects and good luck to the forth coming attractions.

I’ve personally contacted UTV to see that the U.K gets a release, but no, they didn’t deem it neccersary to respond!

    Main FaceBook kyun join karoon?
Mere ko film mein interest hain, social networking mein nahin!

Just makes me mad that this is the only way around this.

Amit Trivedi is definitely a genius. The music was just fucking amazing, I’d been listening to it all the time and tuned my friends on to it to and everyone loved it. Very interesting to know that it was Anurag’s scream in the Rock Version of Emotional Atyachar.
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Things that really stood out for me were Dev and Chanda’s chemistry (specially the scene where she talks about her father), Paro and Chanda’s sexuality, the fact that Dev is an antihero, that you’ll hate thim and what he’s doing to himself, I loved how you got the whole spoilt rich Punjabi brat thing down perfectly. I loved how you depicted Paharganj, as a Delhiite, I saw Delhi as I see it. The ending, which a lot of people saw as a cop-out, I saw as being very true to life. No one will spend their life moping about the one that got away nowadays, you move on. Good job, man. I love all your movies, and I loved this one. I love how you have the real and the surreal in such a great balance in your movies. Can’t wait for Gulal.
Btw, it really looks like you have a great time and work with some amazing, creative people. I wish I do good work like you guys when I grow up (speaking as an impressionable teenager):D

On the subject of a re-release, I see that here, on the east coast of the US, Phoenix Adlabs theaters are screening Manorama again this weekend, so maybe it could be possible, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Dev D lingered in the same cinemas for a fortnight or so in Feb after I got back from Bombay, but I missed catching it a second time on the big screen.

Checked with my local DVD rental guy last week and he didn’t have a any copy, legal or illegal, told me to come back this weekend.

Can’t wait to see the “making of” feature.

Brilliant job, Anurag, congrats to you and your team.
