The Making of OSO : PART - LY
Recently I had a conversation with a Fly who happened to eavesdrop on Farah and Shahrukh during the initial stage of OSO. Here goes the transcript:
Farah and Shah Rukh discussing their next project
FK: SRK man we have to do something big for our next movie. it has to be bigger nicer better and juicier than Main Hoon Na.
SRK: I agree I agree but how?? U have any ideas..
F K (mulling over): u know we could try to have something really big u know like having multiple stars in one movie only.. Imagine having u, akki, salman, aamir, hrithik, saif, abhishek n sanjay in one movie.. The starcast itself will make it the blockbuster of the year!!
SRK: I don’t know know yaar.. U know how insecure I feel when iam around people who are more talented, better looking, intelligent, and have better charisma than me.. I will be pushed to an oblivion in the movie.. If u want a multi starrer film lets play it safe with zayed/ritesh/sunil only in the movie.
FK(despondently): oh yeah that’s right.. Hey (her face lights up) how about this. Lets have them in all only in one song.. U know the mother of all songs shot in a scale never before how abt that shahrukh
SRK: u know that’s not a bad idea.. still so many stars in one song.. wat if iam overshadowed and they think of only the song at the end of the movie its still bad aint it.. and wat excuse will u think of to get all these guys together..
FK: don’t worry ill think of something and we’ll also give u a mind blowingly kick ass solo item song in the movie.. it will be the mother of all item songs and ull overshadow all the others because they are not there to overshadow u in this song.
SRK: brilliant.. simply brilliant idea !! just the idea of having two item songs in one movie will be enough for those corporate honchos to hand us 50 - 60 cr.
FK: yes.. and by the way we’ll have to have deepika for this movie. Ever since our plan of Happy New Year got scrapped she has been pestering me like a credit card tele caller for a role.. and while we are on the subject ill never forgive you for making me announce the movie without having anything on board.. who did u think I was.. ramu??
SRK: yeah yeah yeah.. water under the bridge.. hmmm deepika.. hows her acting skills.. ull have to think of a role that’ll suit her.
FK: acting skills ?? kya pata (who Knows).. she looks good, has a good smile and is more than willing to show her cleavage and long legs. That’s all that I and the audiences care about.. trust me I know how the industry runs since i am a veteran one movie hit film maker.
SRK: sounds good.. lets make the movie and aim for a diwali release.. u finish the story, screenplay part in the next week or so.. we’ll shoot for about 6 months after that.. post production should take some time.. then starts the most important part of any film.
FK: the editing right.. don’t worry shirish will handle it.
SRK: no u doofus the publicity.. That’s the most important part of movie making.. We got to plan our publicity strategy and start sucking up to all the film critics / reviewers/ film pundits/ trade journalists etc. etc. during that period.. Our publicity will guarantee a fantastic opening and the fantastic reviews will pull the film through for the next 2 weeks.. There’s your formula for a blockbuster no matter wat.
FK (in awe): SRK you’re a genius
SRK: I know I know maine bhi itne saal diwali main jhak nahi maari hain (I haven’t fooled around all these years in Diwali) .. hey wat a line remind me to use it during our publicity drive
Cut to Farah’s apartment 6 days and 3hours later where she is discussing with sajid khan about the movie.
FK: Sajid its been 6 days and I’ve still not got any idea for a story yaar.. and SRK will come anytime now expecting a story
SK: dont worry sis.. why don’t u copy any foreign movie / old movie
FK: u think I hadn’t thunk of that.. but with so many movies already being copied left right and centre I don’t think there’s anything left for us poor souls to copy..
SK: don’t worry sis.. during my war with vidhu vinod chopra I found out that in addition to porn, internet can also be used as a source for unknown movies.. give me an hour or two and ill get something for u..
One hour fifty two minutes later..
SK: yes didi I did find something good for u.
FK: very good shahrukh is on his way up.. why don’t you tell us together
SRK enters..
SRK: hi people.. so.. wat do you guys have in mind..
SK: u know I was thinking u have been doing quite a number of amitabh movies for sometime now.. so I thought.. why don’t we now take on dilip kumar movies.
FK: wah wah wat a unique idea.. this is wat I called an original out of the box thinking
SK: there were quite a few movies to choose from but I chose a Bimal Roy movie.
FK: Bimal Roy!! That’s fantastic u have outdone urself
SRK: Bimal Roy?? Wat bimal roy who Bimal Roy.. wat may I ask is Bimal Roy
Farah Khan had all the information of Bimal Roy at her finger tips: its Bimal Roy’s name Shahrukh.
SRK: ok.. so wats the movie all about
SK: I don’t know I haven’t watched the movie as yet.. But the synopsis did talk about good song locations, haunting music, love story, bimal roy, a ghost thrown in somewhere, fantastic acting, reincarnation, evil villain, bimal roy, happy ending, action sequences, and above all this – Bimay Roy.
FK: beautiful it seems to have everything for a blockbuster.. wat say sharukh
SRK: yeah it does seem to be a good idea.. but u know I still want to play one of bachan’s roles only yaar.. that way ill always show the entire world that i am bigger than him.
FK: hey how about this then.. lets place the story in the time frame of amitabh. U know something like the 70s or 80s.. this story has some re incarnation angle somewhere na so then lets put u back in the present times.. this way u get to show urself in his time and kick his ass during his time itself because he’s not there to kick ur ass during his time!!
SRK: superb that’s a great idea.. lets put it together then.. just remember farah the movie should be modern yet traditional should be intelligent yet downright stupid it should have scary moments because I like scary moments at the same time it should have not scary moments because I also like not scary moments it should have songs because people appreciate songs it should also have songless moments because people appreciate that.
FK: don’t worry sharukh. I promise u that ill make a movie that will appeal to all Indians, hindus, muslims, Christians, NRIs, cats cows dogs, zealots, communists, terrorists, naxalites, pacifists, fascists, ruffians, boys, girls, grooms, bridegrooms,…….(the list goes on and on)…
Ok maybe the Fly got the discussion wrong. Maybe the above discussion never happened. Maybe they had proper sittings and discussions for 6-7 months before the movie hit the floors. Maybe the above discussion was a more elevated discussion that they had prior to filming.
The movie asks you to suspend your belief and asks you accept the following things:
That u can remember your past life vividly
That life is full of amazingly well timed co- incidences
That there are vengeful ghosts lurking in the corners with unfinished vengeance
That a decent story is the last thing that a movie has to have
That if theres a happy ending only then can a movie end.. anything else means that the film is incomplete
Ok fine, I am willing to accept all that in the name of cinematic license/liberties. The movie is entertaining in parts does make u go belly up in laughter in some sequences. But wat I cannot fathom is that given all the resources that Red Chillies and Farah Khan could muster this is the only story they could come up with.
I mean with so mush money being invested they don’t even invest one tenth of the budget for a writer / team of writers who could be given a mandate of a proper storyline with screenplay with a six month time frame. I refuse to believe that SRK & Farah wouldn’t get a good story if they followed such a route.
With Main Hoon Na being a resounding success, they needn’t have gone with the “Let’s Play it Safe” route. For some reason the duo seems to be stuck with the thought process that only inane and stupid storyline will pull the audience through as long as you have masala in it. Don’t get me wrong I am all for entertainment, item numbers and masala. But why cant you focus on a good storyline and then add masala in it. Films like Deewar, Sholay, Qurbani, Tezaab, Gupt, etc prove that a good storyline backed up by a dose of masala is a sure shot formula for a blockbuster.
Somebody had mentioned in a review that the 31 stars song proves what clout SRK enjoys in the industry. I say that making a movie with the absence of a coherent storyline and only adding attractions in the movie shows the Insecurity that SRK faces today.
SRK seems to be making movies that are either too experimental like Asoka, Paheli or too mass oriented like Main Hoon Na, OSO. Chalte Chalte was the only movie that treaded the middle path. Being a star SRK is already adding value to the project but he doesn’t seem to be putting any great value on the table as a producer.
Me thinks that if SRK wants to be revered and remembered by future generations then he should make films by focusing on good story writing which is backed up by good production values and proper publicity. Like I said before his presence in the movie anyways adds up tremendous star value. Being a fan of SRK and an admirer of his success I sincerely hope somebody advises him to go about making movies in a better way.

OSO was not a bad film it was a silly film and I think that is so much worse. Shyam Menon in The Hindustan Times described the film perfectly when he said that the film filled the gap between dances.
There are people I know who quite liked it when they saw it for the first time but on seeing it the second time they couldn’t figure out why they liked it the first time at all.
If these are the kind of films Shah Rukh Khan wants to make with his hard earned money then his intelligence is suspect as well as good taste.
And the film had the worst acting I’ve seen in a long time.Even the extras over-acted which should tell you about Farah Khan’s directing capabilitities.
Now everyone in Bollywood will follow the OSO formula of publicizing a film to death.
i believe the Fly.
And what a hilarious presentation you have made in the first part of your post!
I believe OSO was a commercial product to achieve an end i.e to earn money for its producers. it achieved its end for sure. SRK, Farah or anybody never promoted the movies on its acting or story . they were quite candid , that the movie was a part spoof part tribute to 70s style of film making.
The film quite appropriately told the public what to expect and hence nobody was dissapointed atleast after the show. It was actually perfect marketing on the part of Farah, the producers and SRK which has succeeded in this case.
heyyyy r u mad…. r u tryin 2 sayyy dat if a farah khan wants to make an entertaining movie she used no brains…i too totally m of the view dat in a country like india where dere r all kinds of ppl wid different interests dere shud b different films made… but y say dat as a producer he’s not doin anythin… he made asoka n paheli as u urself sd… they mite not ve been good moviez but he tried something different.. as u urself sd dat he also did a chalte chalte in which he took a middle path… then wat u complainin bout,,,,as an actor he did a swades, chak de…etc…i believe d humour in oso waz superb…it waz india’s answer 2 scary movies made in hollywood…n it waz not an orignal movie but dont u understand it waz a spoof movie n no spoof movie in d world can b original coz it izz suppose 2 b a humuorous comment on some1’s wrk…itz d bst spoof movie eva made…isnt it so unfortunate den some1 4 d 1st time tried 2 make a big budget spoof movie in dis country n ppl like u say dat u shud do somethin different…dont u understand dere izz an audience 4 all kinda films but 4 ppl who loveee spoofs like me dere r only some cheap films made in which a johny lever or some other b grade actor does his overacting..i personally dint like d last 1/2 an hr… i feel dat the lst half an hour wazz toooo filmy but it wazz suppose to b dat kind of a movie…total filmy masala movieeee.. n m not a huge farah fan cozz i hated her main hoon na.. it wasnt funny.. infact d emotions potrayed were too ova d top..but thiz time through diz movie she wanted 2 show her love 4 films n d industry itself.. she wanted d entire industry in it..n dat love 4 the industry clerly shows in d moviee…ppl while watchin d movie understood dat itz a movie not 2 b taken seriously, coz at d end of d day itz suppoose 2 b a spoof but den a few so called intelligent ppl like u who write blogs n ppl who dont ve a sense of humour dint understand.. i think d digs taken at ppl like sooraj bharjatya, dev anand, manoj kumar, shabana azmi, akshay kumar, abhishek bachan, n srk himself waz all superbly done… jst try 2 recollect all those scenes in which fun of d above ppl mentioned waz made of n u ll understand dat it waz a film made wid brains n not hw ur fly heard it… wen i started readin dizz article i thought u r tryin 2 b funny but den towards d end i realized u were tryin 2 b toooooooooooo critical bout a good wrk…it wasnt an excellent film but well if dere izz a defination 4 entertaing film it wazz oso… farah izz capable of only makin films like oso n that izz wat she ll make… i loveee even d anurag k’s films…i loved his no smokin too but wat do u expect every1 in d industry 2 make such films only even if dat izz not wat they want 2 make… ppl want variety so if dere izz an anurag, dere has 2 b a farah too… n if dere izz black friday dere has 2 b a masala film like oso too…i knw u gonna say now dat u too like srk, n u too like masala films…boss my point izz not dat… ma point izz ppl like u who dont understand humour n who dont understand wats DIFFERENT KIND OF FILM, den dont write rubbish here… thiz waz a spoof movie n it waz DIFFERENT from a kjo movie so plzzzzz dont write such rubbish….
If u r so intelligent, Brilliant blah blah…
please write a GOOD ORIGINAL JHAKKAS STORY!!
Mind It the story must be ORIGINAL and also entertaining…
One More info Sajid khan was not part of OSO….
stop bitching , get a life :w;
yeah agree with nillohit .. no one’s stopping you(author) frm making an earth-shattering cerebral film .. if u dislike someone’s film - dont watch it .. i dont get this attitude of mock contempt [-x
and i have to say that a no-brainer film like OSO (according to u i.e) had its great moments .. the scene where the set of OSO burns down is quite Spectacularly shot and executed !
There was a report in newspapers that Mr Manoj Kumar was going to sue Farah Khan and SRK for showing him in insulting manner in their film OSO. Did he actually go for defamation suit?
If he is gone and wins then it will be really hard for SRK+FK team. a big commercial loss:-?;)
@filmibhai,
and OSO transcends 70s to enter in to 80s and showing it as 70s. This was also major achievement.:)
–
Seriously when you, rishi, nillohit can like jokes of OSO and can praise humour of Farah and SRK why you cant bear somebody’s humorous take on OSO and its making?
and perhaps you conviniently leave last two paragraph of this article where author shows his big expectations from SRK and disillusionment with his mediocre attempts. Author is also fan of SRK and he has his own ways to show his displeasure with his Cine Idol’s doing. whats and where is the problem?:-?
@RK
i too understand the humuor behind this article but ma point izz simple… i m a movie buff.. n if an author has the audacity 2 complain bout a genuinely well made movie i too ve the right 2 criticize his stupid thinking… as i ve already written in ma last comment dat wen i started reading the article i too felt dat it waz quite funny… n i too loved the humour behind it… i m sure srk n farah themselves will find this article funny but that izz only because every1 has a sense of humour but i dont think the author has it… n frankly the way he concluded the article i only realized dat more then being funny he waz tryin 2 b way toooooooooo sarcastic… n hey common if this ppl write stupid stuff they shud ve enough guts in their balls to accept dat they too sometimes write rubbish… oso wasnt excellent but a well made spoof…u tell me hw many well made spoofs ve we made… try 2 count n u ll know…veryyyy fewwww
bad .. i didnt see the last part of the article .. -(
@Rishi,
friend, ya got your point.Man it was hard to read your sms lingo but succeeded after some effort:d/.
Did you really find those scenes funny where Farah Khan gathers duplicates of old film stars?
They were brainy?
e.g, Manoj Kumar scene - My understanding says an intelligent director will end the scene where a watchman/police person is given driving license by Manoj Kumar and his photo is shown. Humour is at peak at that point and following scene is not required as thats sick face of a well going joke.
SRK’s Yanna Raskala part was proof of his comedy based acting skill in such get up based scenes. He excels in such scenes as he has shown before also in Duplicate, Yess Boss etc.
—
I see you are still not able to see point of author and his article. He fears that SRK gathered all kind of materials like so many stars in a song to increase appeal of his film because he was not confident about carrying film on his shoulders.
To say SRK was a better host than AB in KBC comes under same situation. In AB’s time Star Plus used to invite stars or famous people during some special occasions only just to make some episodes special while during SRK time, inspite of all his hard work, Stars started appearing every now and then.
Nobody knows better than wearer where shoe pinches. Its marketing era and those who are involved excatly know the real scene. You and I see only doctored picture presented before us. and in such scenario personal common sense and personal observation helps. Dont you think so?
and I am curious to know what other well made spoof films you have in mind. It will be good to see few of them which are not seen till now.:)
OSO aint a ’spoof-film’ .. a sppof film is where the spoofs are an end itself of the story .. like Scary movie series .. or the recent hollyowood megaflop ‘Epic movie’
OH PLEASE END THE DISCUSSION ON ‘OSO’ FOR GOD SAKE……. LET TALK SOME THING QUALITATIVE….:(
@RK
well,i exactly see the point behind his article… i know the author fears that srk is probably depending on others for his own success.. but tell me do you think he has come so far with some1 else’s popularity…did he require 31 stars in ddlj or a chak de or a swades… no right…he has so many stars in the film because farah wanted it that way otherwise he would ve got 31 stars even for phir bhi di hai hindustani…. maybe he really is insecure but then that is only because he loves his popularity and he will do anything to maintain it for the rest of his life…he ll dance in marraiges, he ll do a kbc, he ll do any bloody possible thing to maintain it and he openly accepts it.. he openly said in an interview once that he is totally a media made man… i ll tell u why i dint like this article…srk worked with aditya and kjo in their debut films and everyone knows where ve they reached.. he worked for aziz mirza’s 1st film.. and he too became a sucessful director.. and now who ever he works with him becomes a big director and after so much of hard work people still say he depends on others…he’s made so many people huge… others now depend on him.. he does not need anyone.. only because he is a guy who believes in aggresive marketing people think that he depends on external stuff more than his own talent.. as far as the humour is concerned it is not rocket science brainy type humour..at times it was slap stick.. but who says slap stick comedy is bad.. everyone loves the slap stick humour of hollywood why do we call it silly and criticize it so much here.. isnt it meant to be silly.. and i m not sayin farah and srk should get best brains award but if you think that a good entertaining spoof is made without any brains then well what can i say.. i personally feel you need brains to make any good movie whether it is oso or a rdb… dont get me wrong.. rdb was 100 times better then oso but the fact is oso was not bad too… a movie buff like me wants good cinema and variety and when i like a movie like manorama- 6 ft under and black friday and a swades(which is srk movie, lemme remind the author), i also want to watch an oso.. and i dont understand what the author is complainin about.. he is doing a chak de or a paheli which are not the typical masala films, but then he is also doing an oso so why is he as a srk fan so worried and why cant he simply enjoy a sweet film like oso.. maybe bcoz he has no sense of humour.. and maybe u dint like the manoj kumar scene so much but well i loved it so no point in talking about it.. if the author dint like the film thats his prsonal choice but to say that as a producer he is always trying to be safe and is doing bad movies my point is oso is firstly not a bad movie, but even if the author thinks that it is, plz you all know he has done a paheli and an asoka so how come you are saying he’s trying to be SAFE.. infact i read in yesterday’s mid day that srk’s company is line producer for forthcoming movie caled my name is anthony gonsalves which is not a big movie.. so why unnecesarilly think so much.. you might agree with him but i dont and i hope you see my point behind my comments…
@Rishi,
ya I get your point.:)
@ rishi
dude! the first and foremost requirement of a movie is a decent story. that is what a movie is all about. it is not about a set of childish jokes randomly put together. if i can see those on mtv for free, why waste 150 rs. on a movie?
especially when the jokes were not funny and no scene in the movie was original.
just as a sample, search ‘american rajnikant’ on youtube and see where the akshay kumar scene came from. the one genuinely funny moment in the movie was lifted. and every scene is a copy. it will nedd another post to list every inspiration for the movie.
and if it was a genuine satire why weren’t scenes from actual 70’s movies used as a reference in the movie?
get this straight man! oso is a bad movie. very, very bad. slightly better than main hoon naa though….
if saawaria had turned out to be a decent film even, oso would have crashed like anything at the b.o.
and who the f**k watches a movie just because it has this and this star in it?
it is absurd logic to watch a movie just because it stars srk…..
@K J
I find myself refuting your statements again ..
“the first and foremost requirement of a movie is a decent story” - Sure, we all like good stories, we may also like stuff thats not really focussed on telling a story .. more on making a humorous statement … ummm .. OSO ? You know what, OSO actually fails in the part, when it starts to take its story seriously. Now, what do you make of that ?
” it will nedd another post to list every inspiration for the movie.” - Please do so. A lot of people would love to read that.
“and if it was a genuine satire why weren
There is no doubt that good writing is a good thing. I believe that to the core. Truly. I’m a writer myself.
..but I think it’s totally upto SRK what kind of film he wishes to make. Consider that it may not be the “Let
Most long drawn spool of waste Ive read in a long long time.
Mate, somehow at the end of it all, OSO entertained a lot more than your post.
Absolutely. And dude, if you think you know who Bimal Roy was and SRK doesn’t, then, well, the joke is on you really. Get a life. Or go work for Stardust. You’ll be their star columnist.
LOL Debo !!
fact that FK is comfortable with Retro and SRK wants to monetize that. Let them make money by entertaining us.
Remember SRK saying that he is acting for money and some day, he’ll act for his mom. We should all be waiting for that day.
Cheers!
@KJ
heyy dude so i m not claiming that it was a master piece.. i m just saying amongst all the movies made this movie also has a place,, if u dont like it, cool… if the author does not like it, cool… but if u read ma comments properly u ll know that at the end i ve only tried to conclude that let there be all kinds of movie and dont try to say that srk is losing it or he is playing it safe… as i ve said in my earlier comment, it was not an original stuff.. i too know akshay k scene has been lifted, but fk and srk r not bothered.. this is how they wanted it and they ve succeded in entertaining people..if u dint get entertained, m sorry for u dude, u took the movie toooooo seriously.. i thought every1 while watching the movie ll understand that it was not to b taken seriously but maybe a few dint understand.. i ll suggest u never watch movies like scary movie, euro trip, etc.. coz this r movies not to be taken seriously..
Dude…this is a film which is to be taken in the right spirit- if the author feels he has more intelligence than the director or the actor is question about cinema, then he is fooling himself. I would have loved Dhoom 2 if you had made it like a spoof coz it seemed like one..a film like OSO is made to be stilly, stupid and just have fun- if you go in watching it with intentions of seeing a classic art form ul b disappointed…also they have “acknowledgd” most tributes- say the Karz climax…
This was so hilarious! I don’t know whether they came up with the concept of the film in this manner or not but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I guess everyone has a place in the industry. We have Anurag and we have Farah & Karan…oh how can I forget Yash Raj productions. I think we need people to make different kinds of films so we don’t get bored! The most important thing of all is to appreciate the creativity of a person and try to understand their perspective. Also try to interpret everything in your own way…
Some films are made to just simply entertain and OSO is one of them. No thinking is required!
OSO was a good movie….
and thats it….
SRK is the best….
You just see the sheer energy of this man yaar…
Not everyone can do what he has done in just three month i.e. those 6 PACK ABS …
n that too in an age of 42…
and with a Titanium disk in the backside of his shoulder…
Man… Not everyone can do that..
n OSO was superb.. I just loived the movie…
I liked OSO more then this stupid article. And director & actor more then this stupid author. This movie is so funny that even Anurag Kashyap also enjoyed it. Infact he was worried what his fans will think about him for liking such a brainless movie. Anyways guys I love this movie(OM SHANTI OM). In one interview SRK had mentioned that this movie has to be taken seriously bcoz it is has been made seriously funny.
One more request to the author please make one movie with the original story & you can ask SRK to produce it for you or maybe act in it bcoz he might just need your support to stay in the industry or to be in the stardom. However your bcum so famous now so he might need your support.[-o<
“This movie is so funny that even Anurag Kashyap also enjoyed it. Infact he was worried what his fans will think about him for liking such a brainless movie.”
hehe >:) how do u knw this ?
one has to admit that srk really is special .. razor sharp wit, terrific screen presence , extraordinarily energetic and fit , can switch frm theatrical style to mature acting style according to the script (and does well mind you), self made man (most important) and so on ..
he pulled off the funny scenes in OSO amazingly .. remember that south indian hero scene where he fights the stuffed tiger .. haha !
@Sudhir Nair
Although, I dont agree with you entirely, I liked the way you wrote that making. Black humor, sarcasm and all. Nice. :d
From one SRK fan to another ..
Do you ever hope that SRK does a hard-hard-core-gritty-to-the-nuts action movie ?
maria sharapova reply karo !!
i guess i did not enjoy it bcoz it did not make it laugh. maybe the after effects of main hoon naa did not let me enjoy a farah khan movie….
that was the only movie i have ever walked out of from theatre.
@turtle:
SRK in a hard core action movie will be a welcome change.. but personally i would like to watch in a role which showcases his passion again - ala bazigar. Recently only Swades briefly captured it in the climax sequence when he’s trying his heart out in making the turbine work.
He has got lots of intensity in him which seems to be missing in his current flicks.
:d:d/ ok
